It's funny that the "world's greatest Asteroids player" can't spell 'asteroids'

-
heheh....
Hey, there's an idea. Make the maze walls in Adventure electrified! It'd be like Operation RPG-style

-
Hopefully whoever has it now (Marc?) can get it redumped. Perhaps that's why it's so buggy (and maybe why the title screen has those black bars running through it).
Are there really that many bad dumps circulating? I had no idea.
-
In this case, we were able to contact Tod Frye (thanks John), so the chance of a good Airworld fake getting past anyone now is about nil. As for any other potential protos out there that could be faked, maybe we should make a list. The good thing is there probably isn't that many titles that would be as valuable as Airworld (which IMHO is at the top of that list). I think it would be harder (and less valuable) to pass off something 'original', rather than say modifying an existing proto (making it seem more complete, for example). Something like the Hulk (of which we know little about) would be one such title now (new movie coming out, comics are hot again, etc.). As I mentioned, screen shots should not be enough if someone is willing to spend $$$ on a proto based on just that, but if you are, it's your risk.

The manual in the 1st auction appears gray instead of white.
-
I've got to agree with A2L, but there does have to be some form of open air discussion in order to reveal/confirm the proto. It's a double-edged sword that we have to deal with.
You're right. There are still a few 'holy grails' out there, such as Airworld, that (if found) would be worth some serious $. I think we all know now that some people will try their best to take advantage of that fact. This was a good example of how not to do fake screen shots, but you can see how he was testing the water by having us look at it before it went to Ebay (again). Chances are if the screen shots were done right, someone could have stood to lose a lot of money.
Personally, if I was prepared to bid on something like a real Airworld proto, I would want the chance to at least see video of the game being played, if not the opportunity to play it in person or examine the binary file of it. Perhaps the best solution to that problem would be to make the ROM available before the sale, since screen shots alone are no longer enough. Albert touched on this before and I agree - having the ROM available does not affect the value of the original prototype, and that's been proven more than once.

But alas, these posts go nowhere, must... dump... rom...
That's about the only thing you can do now to prove yourself.

Nice work, Dutchman!
Bu-bu-bu-BUSTED!

i'm excited to see more, the misplaced pixel in the man piccture above is also common in the earthworld series in somplaces, so i would not worry about itWhere, exactly??

Now that we got that mystery cleared up, can you guys tell me who REALLY shot JFK????
Nice detective work everybody!

According to the Onion, Kennedy was slain by the CIA, Mafia, Castro, LBJ, Teamsters, and the Freemasons. He was shot 129 times from 43 different angles.

Tempest- I've always wondered that. EW looks more 'polished'. FW just looks (and plays) rushed.

Fake protos have been discovered before (anyone remember the Pitfall 3 story?
) so it's not entirely something we can rule out...esp since we all know how valuable a real Airworld proto would be. The more I look at the pictures, the more it looks like it could have been based on Waterworld rather than Fireworld (Fireworld didn't even have a title screen). If the proto is a fake, then it was very well done. As for the 83 copyright date, I wouldn't read too much into it since there have been a few instances where protos have been found with different dates than the release versions (Saboteur is one I know of off-hand. I'm sure Matt can list a few others). If the programming was started early enough in 83, there was a chance it could have come out in the same year. The original Waterworld contest entry deadline was December 15, 1983, but was extended to April 15, 1984, so more than likely AW would have come out in 84.

Hmm...the plot thickens (and the value drops
).Well, if this isn't Tod's work, then who did it? Perhaps looking at the code will shed some light (i.e. dumping the ROM).
-
If it's a case of the ROM being dumped incorrectly, wouldn't it have been easier to just redump it?

-
Well, that explains it then! Thanks for clearing that up Eckhard.

When played on a real system (with the Cuttle cart .... I didn't get the cart yet), there is a little intro scene of sorts. The river scene appears, and you can see an Elf's face at the top of some sort of "tower". The tower slowly moves right and you then see the Elf's head in the water and Snow White's body (sans head - how horrid) on the top of the tower (along with other various pieces of graphics "garbage" - obviously very buggy). Here are some pics:
A little tune plays, and then the title screen appears. After a couple seconds, another (similar) tune plays and the game just sits on the title screen waiting. Pressing the fire button starts the game. Pressing RESET goes back to the title screen (and plays that tune again). The mine shaft screen is also stable on a real system - using the emulators, it slightly shakes.
Using Z26 1.56
You get something similar to the intro, but not the same. This time you see Snow White's head and body on the tower (but not together - oh the HORROR of it all):
Also, you don't get either tune, and the game only shows the title screen for a few seconds before starting automatically. Pressing RESET restarts the game again.
Using Z26 1.57
Plays exactly like on the system except it doesn't show the river intro scene at all (completely skips over it...putting Snow White out of her misery).

I'm getting the same picture as Matty. Same thing on a real system (with the Cuttle Cart).
Btw, I've always put my command line options AFTER the filename and it's always worked for me

I'm wondering if there isn't more to this game, or perhaps the other copy rumored to be out there is more complete? According to programmer John Seghers, he remembers seeing Tod Frye testing out Airworld. The game screen he saw was a first-person flying perspective of your character flying over a landscape – he believes it was suppose to be Torr on the flying horse.
For more info, see my Airworld page at: http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/Lair/...r/9260/awr.html

Wow, thanks! Very cool stuff.

Chris: In the next intermission, it shows her dress sewn back together where it ripped

Jan Boehm was at CGE2K. Briefly met with her at the alumni dinner. Very nice lady.

Count me in for a copy. One thing I'd like to see is the games listed in alphabetical order, instead of by categories. Just easier to find games that way.

Quadrun up to $935.00 on Ebay

Why is it that Atari followed through with the Video Game Masters contests (well, up to the 2nd game as far as I know), and not Swordquest? The deadline for the Quadrun VGM portion was April 84.
