A fun quick retroactive entry for September. First off, 44 forgettable facts about Bubsy, released in May? How did I miss this?

And a positive video released on Bubsy 3D? Awesome, and released August 31st, 2016!

    More about Bubsy soon!

So as a friend of mine said tonight, people are brought into our life for a reason, a season, and a lifetime.

Facebook brings all our friends together in one place, giving new definition of the above statement.

A Reason: Ok, I remember the REASON why we stopped talking....

A Season: Conversation goes something like this....
    You: Hey! How's it been?
Them: Great! graduated, got married, had kids, successful...
    You: Me too!!
Them: Man it has been great seeing you again.
You: Yeh! Catch up again in another 15 years..

A Lifetime: Friends you barely talk to on Facebook because you were talking before Facebook and will probably be talking to when Facebook goes the way of VHS tapes and MySpace.

Tonight I was cruising through a bunch of those sites with the fun information, though the next button for the next slide is usually scrolled off the screen and as a annoying lot of ads. I came across one site talking about all the animated movies released by DC and I have to say about 60% I've enjoyed. About 30% I haven't seen and it sounds like I am not missing much with those, and 10% I saw and were meh.

Suicide Squad the animated movie the Oceans 11 feel was great, and probably why I have not seen the live action movie yet. The animated movies generally get it right, probably because they are lower budget and don't feel they need to tell everything to make it worth $200 million. Take Green Lantern: First Flight verses the live action Green Lantern. I liked the live action movie actually, but the live action movie felt it had to pack so much in while the animated movie took it's time to tell a good story.

Then there was Superman/Batman - Public Enemies. Actually fairly meh EXCEPT for that it had Captain Atom and Captain Marvel (Shazam) featured. In the remarks I had this to say:

"Soooo many good titles listed here. Green Lantern and Wonder Woman got some great titles. And seeing Captain Atom in Public Enemies (2009) was great! What SHOULD have happened would have been lead up to the "Captain Atom: Armageddon", a awesome slugfest and would have introduced the Wildstorm Universe character to animation again."

What I wouldn't give to see that as a animated movie.

Been getting back into the Nuon lately. You can find a whole thread I created about the Nuon and discussions about this great and yet obscure "console" that was the spiritual successor to the Atari Jaguar.

It's a great time to get back involved. N501 units are real cheap, though controllers are currently hard to find.

And the rotary controller is just around the corner for playing Tempest 3000!

But here was my discovery tonight of Next Tetris and realizing my Toshiba SD2300 needed a firmware upgrade. And I have uploaded the disc image of the upgrade disc I created.

A frustrating night, which a great ending.

So as a kid, like many Atari kids, I was drawn in by the excitement of the Swordquest series.

What? You don't know what Swordquest was? What were you? Born in 1989? You probably think Nintendo was the first game system!

Just kidding, check out this great article I found on the Swordquest experience.

Essentially Atari came up with this great idea to make a game and comic book series (produced through DC comics) where people would play the games and read the comics to find clues. After finding so many clues they could submit them to Atari to be eligible to win prizes that were created by the Frankin Mint. These prizes were gold versions of the relics the characters were trying to find in the comics and the game.

Despite the fact that Atari didn't get out all four games as planned, they got out three games and the comics that came with them were actually fun to read.

So over this weekend after researching the various efforts of fans to make the fourth comic book and game to complete the series, I wrote my own theories and a rough outline of how I believe the story would have ended. You can find all that here:

    http://atariage.com/forums/topic/25219-airworld-update-comic-is-back-on/?do=findComment&comment=3540281

Ultimately current Atari put the kabosh on fans creating or selling a actual fourth (Airworld) game or comic book. However as of a year ago Dynamite comics had bought the rights to redistribute the Atari comics and make other new comics. Hopefully something comes of that.

In the meantime, enjoy my imagination inspired by these games.

And maybe write your own ending.

So we've been having fun here on the Bubsy Bobcat Fan Blog with our tracking of fan art, music, news, speedruns, and lately the interviews with developers and producers that brought us Bubsy.

A friend of mine was inspired by that and decided to launch a similar blog for his favorite mascot, Crash Bandicoot. So here is the link, go give that new blog a warm welcome!

    http://atariage.com/forums/blog/649/entry-13016-welcome-to-the-crash-bandicoot-bandwagon/

And to start this off, here is the one piece of crossover fan art between Crash and Bubsy I could find.

Well, apparently they remembered Bubsy enough to consider him the worst mascot (that people remember). So just pointing out the logic here.

    BUBSY IS IMFAMOUS!!!

(As a friend of mine said, if you can't be famous, be imfamous. Either way you're known.)

Thanks to Sponge Fox we have this great happy birthday greeting for Rob Paulsen... only 15 days late!

    (Ooops! Sorry Rob)

It is funny how I believe it was around his birthday I popped in my copy of Animaniacs one night. Love that show but I hadn't watched that in ages. Oh wow that show is timeless. And naturally I watch the show listening to Yakko and thinking with a slight alteration in voice we have the Bubster.

I was looking at Rob's picture and he kinda resembles Yakko:

Fun stuff. Well again, happy 60th Rob!

The only other order of business this month...

BUBSY NEEDS YOU TO HELP WITH A PODCAST!!

It's true. The Jaguar Game by Game Podcast by Shinto will be covering the Jaguar version of Bubsy roughly a month for now, and I am gathering information. So you the Bubsy fans can give your feedback or questions that you would like covered.

What I am looking for are:

    1) Things you would like to know about Bubsy in general
    2) Questions you would have for the developers of the Jaguar Bubsy game
    3) How would you rate the Jaguar version of Bubsy?
    (1) Hall of Fame Game (top 5 on the Jaguar)
    (2) Solid Game
    (3) "Meh" Game
    (4) Trash Game (bottom 5 on the Jaguar)

You can leave those questions in the comments, or just PM me the feedback or questions.

Naturally for me the Jaguar version of Bubsy I would not neccessarily say "Hall of Fame" but it is my top 5 go to games on the Jaguar (at the moment Bubsy, Cybermorph, Raiden, Doom, and Joust).

With all it's problems, meh, I still will vote a Hall of Fame in my book. But we all have our guilty pleasures and Bubsy is certainly mine as a hobby.

I look forward to your feedback. Soon we will have an informative hour plus long podcast episode about Bubsy that we all can enjoy!

Well Hi everyone! Hope you had a great valentine's day

    And if not, stay strong...

Thanks for that SpongeFox! We got some great news and some good laughs in this February edition of the Bubsy blog.

I liked this video released a month ago. Bubsy HD, not much to speak of, but good to see someone giving a crack at making a Bubsy game so who knows what it might eventually develop into!

    HOLD THE PHONE!!!

I was going to post some ho-hum videos about Bubsy Two-Fur videos but how about something new and different and even fun to watch?

Someone made a Bubsy mod for Brawl!! And whoever was playing Bubsy was kicking some serious butt!! They did this mod right. Basically Bubsy's glide ability is great for not getting knocked off the platform. They punch him off, he glides back!

Here is where you can download the Bubsy Mod I think...
    http://forums.kc-mm.com/Gallery/BrawlView.php?Number=210404

The pictures from the game are amazing. You get some great action shots that would inspire many deviant artists for years...

Looks like Bubsy was a recipient of the "Gold X" award again.

    Captain Bubsy (Warning strong language)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R5LFVmoFiXg

Here is a fun compilation of Bubsy videos. I really liked the speed eating competition with Kagura from Aza Manga Dao

And here is another posted just a few days ago. Got a good laugh out of the "Bubsy movie produced by Michael Bay with a nuclear explosion. And the part of the video where you find why it was not good to wake Arnold. I think that Komi's contribution.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOsPBdv7O2w

Let's see, what other videos were made this month?

    There is the Bubsy Twerk...

We have this Sonic skit where Bubsy shows up briefly wielding a red light sabre, kinda fits the valentine's color scheme:

This one was cool, someone played a Bubsy gif on the NES. I always love retro achievements. The description says "A clip of the Bubsy cartoon on the NES. The GIF used to make this was converted with NESFlix."
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94GyeJYGkx4

Retro Gamer Ryan gave a review of Bubsy in Fractured Furry Tales. Always like it when someone ventures over to the Jaguar version of Bubsy.

That's it for this time, let's see what new in the Bubsy world next month!

In the meantime, enjoy some Bubsy in Brawl!!

Hello Bubsy fans! We are through a busy holiday season spent with friends and family, and now I turn to give some love to our favorite Bobcat!

I will confess, I was spending a lot of the last month playing and giving input on the recently released Star Raiders 2 for the Atari 8-bit computers. Star Raiders is a love of mine from WAYYY back. Also helped contribute sound for the ST ports to the Atari Jaguar of Moon Patrol and Joust. Glad I could contribute something in bringing those retro titles to the Jaguar. Naturally CJ had the really hard part in converting the binary code on those two games. December was a great month and as I left 2015 there wasn't much I would change, so I said "Let's continue doing good stuff."

BUBSY ON SOUNDCLOUD - A WHOLE SOUNDTRACK OF FAN MUSIC!!!

First off, I was cruiz'in Soundcloud. I was hanging around on Atariage and someone pointed me to a 8-bit music artist and while there and while there I looked up Bubsy and found a cool orchestrated musical number for Bubsy by Hill Stream Blues. That one is very adeventuresome and soothing at the same time.

Checking out others on the channel you have a lot of people who go by Bubsy this or that, and have video game related music but still looking for other Bubsy specific themes. There is one artist that mentions Bubsy Gaming, so far not seeing the connection. I suppose their music is Bubsy in game music feel. You have a Bubsy short by Not Applicable. You find that many things on SoundCloud are kinda experiments. This one by Dare Bex is pretty cool in a electronica sort of way. You have a good general Bubsy 1 theme by Butt Man. Got a bassy down beat with Rancid Rat.

Oh here we go!!! This one is good, Megalovania, but played entirely with Bubsy 1 Soundfonts by Seishun. Oh this one is cute. They us Bubsy sounds. I would like to see more songs "Bubsyized" like this.

Oh wow, a Smash Brothers theme called "Super Smash Bros. Crusade - Bubsy Theme" by Afilion Music. This is some good fight music for Bubsy.

Here is a favorite I first heard on YouTube and featured here before, River Raftin (Bubsy Orchestral Remix) by CJtheMusicDude.

And then, it was like a wall broke and I found all kinds of Bubsy material. Most of this was submitted under a year ago, and most of those in the last six months. Just amazing. You could burn a CD Soundtrack of these Bubsy inspired songs. Well, most of them are, the rest are questionable but say "Bubsy in the name".

This one is a honorable mention by Diggy, who has Bubsy as a avatar. I liked this Space Jam and Enya mix. It's wild.

Here is another honorable mention of someone who uses Bubsy as the avatar who goes by the name Bugsy. Here is Share my World. Not a Bubsy related song, but again an artist whose avatar was at least inspired by Bubsy.

NEW BUBSY BOBCAT FRACTURED FURRY TALES SPEEDRUN VIDEO FOR 2016 BY YOUR'S TRULY!

This video is two minutes longer than my 2014 Speedrun of 42 minutes and yes I die a few times and make one major wrong turn. One difference from the 2014 video is that this video is continuous record and unedited! A TRUE Speedrun video.

My thanks to the fans who watched my Bubsy videos over the years.

    BUBSY TWO-FUR UPDATE

I got good news and bad news.

The good news is you can buy Bubsy Two-Fur for $3.99 for the next two days (regular price $4.99).

The bad news is to put simply, I'm having trouble with my Steam account. Oh well, I just sent $3.99 to a website to say "We want more Bubsy!".

Maybe by next month my trials with the Steam account will be sorted out and I can give a review here.

Until next time have fun with whatever blows your hair back.

Today when I got home I get this message in my Atariage mailbox...

So here is what the link says:

LOS ANGELES, CA (November 15, 2015) — Retroism, a publisher and distributor of classic and classically inspired games owned by Tommo, Inc., announces the revival of Bubsy…yes, that Bubsy!

Accolade’s most notorious character showed up on our doorstep, bedraggled and mumbling about being doomed to a legacy of shame and obscurity. But we’ve cleaned him up and given him a new lease on life, a shot at returning to the big time – but he’ll need the help of his fans! The wise-cracking Bobcat is now on Steam Greenlight, petitioning voters to help #SaveBubsy by supporting his triumphant return in The Bubsy Two-Fur, a new release of two of Bubsy’s best platformers for the first time in authorized digital download format.
“Bubsy represents an iconic addition to the platformer legacy of the 80s and 90s that was buried because certain Plumbers and Needlemice didn’t want to share the spotlight,” said Tommo VP of Business Development Michael Devine. “We’re pleased to bring back Bubsy and encourage all his fans to vote for him on Steam Greenlight – Save Busby and let him roam the world of Steam as his new Kingdom!”
Taking a slightly more serious approach, Tommo CEO, Jonathan Wan added, “In 2013 we acquired the Accolade brand and iconic game series such as Bubsy and Hardball, and we’re working hard to bring them to new audiences. Bubsy Two-Fur is just the beginning.”
The Bubsy Two-Fur has a planned retail price of $4.99 and will debut on Steam if enough fans vote for him. To cast a vote, follow the link below and help #SaveBubsy!

That really is great news. Doesn't look like new material, but this get's Bubsy on another platform, and that is a great start.

Some reviews of this... (listening to this... holy cow this is depressing to listen to after a while...)

I installed Steam on my Mac, turned on steamguard and voted for Bubsy.

And here are the responses to this game so far, starting with my own.

I'm excited to hear this news and there were a lot of other people in the responses that follow that are excited as well. WELCOME BACK BUBSY!!

During the month of May Noxid tweeted a new Bubsy fact every day. I really got a kick out of some that Noxid and Pingurules came up with. I asked Noxid if we could feature those daily facts here and he wrote back:

    "Hey Doc!

No problem, I've got all the original images...
Feel free to share! I take responsibility for any inaccuracies, but to the best of my knowledge they're either truthful (at time of writing) or unverifiably correct, the best kind of correct ;3"

Agreed. So in order, here are the BUBSYFACTS!

    Fact Comments:

    1. Super Bubsy: With improved graphics and sound. Also where you get to see the Bubsy TV pilot.
    2. Gold X Award: Nothing found on it so far.
    3. Rob Paulsen: Sometimes I watch animaniacs and think of the many things Bubsy could say. Or use as voice samples for Bubsy.
4 What could possibly go wrong: Yeh they wore that in the ground. Always wondered if it was like Pewee's Playhouse where they had the phrase of the day. So the next episode entitled "Pilot's License, what for?" would feature that phrase through the episode.
    5. Eyeball volume: Looks about true.
    6. Bubsy as a name: I think I have seen some hisspanic families use the name.
    7. Sonic as inspiration: Why not? Sonic was awesome. And in the end, since Sonic was not on SuperNES Bubsy became a Sonic for those gamers. I have met many that had fond memories of the first game, at least till the internet told them otherwise.
    8. Undocumented Bubsy cheat: XLTNGBUGMB = pingurules figured out what the cheat code in fact #8 does!
"when you enter this code, Press Triangle + Select during gameplay for invincibility."
(Well done! I want to try this now!)
    9. Bubsy 2 - Along with Mike Berlyn there was also Scott Williamson as programmer being different. The mechanics and float are a bit different. Bubsy 1 code was used to start Fractured Furry Tales so that is why those two feel similiar.
10: Stacking Bubsy's: I love Bat Bubsy. Some of the art used in these facts are great.
11: Digits of PI: Did not know, awesome fact. If Gamespot and the Cutting Room Floor is correct on the codes this is statement would be true for all but the third level code.

12: Basement Boys : A nod to C=64 days, nice!
13: Bankrupt: While this is a true fact, I like how the artist featured the red and green colors (player 1 and player 2 exclamation marks of first Bubsy game) and yellow (the exclamation marks of Fractured Furry Tales). Nice touch! And shows both Accolade and Atari.
14: Promotional merchandise: Also available were sunglasses from Babbages, and the T-Shirt promotions for Bubsy 1 and Bubsy 2.
15: Mountain Cat: Sponge Fox illustrated that and one the Bubsy Fan Blog helped with.
16: Most popular Bobcat on Playstation: Hard to disagree.
17: Kevin Macklin: That is interesting. Will let you know if I get of anything about him.
18: Comparison to a Ballzooka: That is one thing I liked about Bubsy, he made the Ballzooka look huge like he was carrying a gatlin gun. When I would get a Ballzooka it was about the size of a sawed off shotgun. I was like "That's it?"
19: Woolie Queens separated: See, now there is some good ole cartoon violence right there.

20: Top speed: Actually in line with the actual speed of a Bobcat:
    http://animals.mom.me/speed-bobcat-10318.html
"Bobcats don't do a lot of running, yet they can reach speeds of 25 to 30 mph in short bursts. They lie in wait for prey or stalk it, rarely needing to run it down."
Strangely, that is exactly the description of how Bubsy gameplay works.

For the next two Noxid said:
"There are two facts that weren't actually made by me, I was busy for a weekend and another fan (Pingurules) made 21 and 22 in my absence"

    21. Snake Eyes: Loved seeing a reference to Snake Eyes. Noxid added in a conversation with me:
"You can't ever see him normally besides there that I know of though, but if you use the password "XURASNAKER" then bubsy's regular textures will be replaced with this one where he's got an eyepatch and some stubble and the Shadow Bubsy shirt. Still plays the same though, it's just graphical."
22: Totally Authorized Answer Book: That is true, and there is a book for "Bubsy 1 & 2" also out there.
23: First voice acted character of the 16 bit era: the trick here is "of the 16 bit era". Of the mascots, yes he was. If you go further back you have Intellivision with the voice module which actually were digitzed from voice actors. But Intellivision is the 8 bit era. Other than that, GO BUBSY!
24: Closer to Atari VCS/2600 launch date: 15 years from the first Atari cartridge system, 22 years since Bubsy 1. True true....
25: If you let Bubsy in your heart he will never leave you: I think cats are just that way.
26: 190,000 copies sold: I see Bubsy in stories and in flea markets all the time so that seems right.
27: A new Bubsy game: We can only hope. Bubsy has been gone long enough and now fans are learning to program and make their own games. Bubsy 3D 2 with the museum is one example of what is possible with some basic doodling. I'm sure better games are around the corner.

Love a lot of these BUBSYFACTS and maybe Noxid, Pinurules, and other Bubsy fans can make another month of it sometime? Maybe the month of May can be Bubsy facts month? Either way thanks Noxid for making that happen.

And as we leave today, a picture from Sponge Fox "Yamaneko Bubsy's Moment of Zen and Yarn".

    Later Bubsy fans!

    Evening Bubsy fans!

So this is where I stop into YouTube to see what new stuff is going on with Bubsy this month. Years from now it will be probably videos that used to be there. First off wasn't the New Horizons past Pluto a blast last month? Loved it.

Ok, so what kinda of activities are we seeing with Bubsy this month?

Well a lot of reviews, which are basically people
    Yawn.

    But according to Vinesauce Vinny who was extra busy making reviews both the Bubsy 3D and the Bubsy 3D museum game;

Bubsy for charity. Yeh, that is a new one.
There was a cute video made with Source Filmaker that had Mario and Luigi from Vinny's video linked above.

We also have people making Bubsy animations, or at least that is what they are calling it. I will not be featuring the animations when they are made because they look nothing like Bubsy.

But some more interesting entries are people doing speed runs of Bubsy in Sonic 2. A month or so back we featured this hack of Sonic 2, and I have played it a lot, I think I got about three or four levels in. Bubsy is more fragile than ever in this by design (and a joke). I have mentioned to programmers that Bubsy is not so fragile, but they decided to leave it as is. Despite this, whoever played this speed run did a very good job:

On this video, , titled "Leaked E3 footage from Sony 2016 "the description is interesting at least:

    "Published on Jul 17, 2015
Uncharted 5, PlayStation All-Stars 2, Crash Bandicoot: Spin the hood, LittleBIGPlanet Retro Adventure, PaRappa the Rapper remix, Klonoa 3: Dream Destiny, Destiny DLC, Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures 3, Bubsy's Grand Finale, Crash Bandicoot trilogy HD, Pink and Red PS4s."

This is the first I've heard of this possible title and there is literally nothing else in the searches out there. Still, interesting. Someone is at least dreaming of another Bubsy. For all you fans out there that want to see another Bubsy game, I don't envy the programmer who tries to make that happen. I think Bubsy is infamous for one. Yes, many would flock to get the next game, and I think they would almost be disappointed if the game was good.

But it is all in the delivery. So here is what I like about all the Bubsy games out there (and don't like) for all game developers

Bubsy 1 (like) colorful, whimsical, well put together. (Dislike) Not much.
Bubsy 2 (like) creative additions, power ups. (Dislike) Gravity engine in game stunted gliding.
Bubsy FFT(like) Zippy, colorful, good mod music (Dislike) Not as polished feeling as Bubsy 1.
Bubsy 3D (like) The Gliding. (Dislike) The turning.
Bubsy JTE(like) The flying, multiplayer. (Dislike) Turning into the creepy man in ending.

And then you have the Sonic 2 hack which just shows what Bubsy would be like with Sonic elements.

What makes Bubsy fun? What would I like to see if Bubsy was revisited?

Well, to me with Bubsy was definitely a product of his time, also comes to mind, along with , , , and .

If you follow all those links I just provided here is what I learned from them that would benefit Bubsy:

    1) Leisure Suit Larry: If you have to be lame, flant it. I always felt Bubsy had the same level of lame that Leisure Suit Larry has going on. Bubsy is all that, but just take away all the womanizing, which would leave Leisure Suit Larry with essentially nothing. But love how Leisure Suit Larry flants it (and I think Bubsy already flants it).

    2) Sam & Max: So what we learn from this, be in his own world and love it. Maybe his "sidekick" Arnold can be more on par with Bubsy this time like Sam & Max to give Bubsy someone crazy to join his adventures. I really liked that character dynamic in Sam & Max.

    3) The Tick: Delusions of grandeur Bubsy already has in spades. I have seen depictions of Bubsy older and worn out, or where he lost that edge, grew up, etc. Nah, Bubsy needs to remain as oblivious as ever. It is what he does best.

    4) Freakazoid - I'll admit, I didn't follow this so much. Maybe an example of too much crazy, which granted the Bubsy pilot did that as well.

    5) Animamanics I actually learned two things:
    a) Ron Paulson needs to be the voice. Hearing him as Yakko tells me Bubsy could tone it down a bit and be fun, witty, and sarcastic all in one. And I think Bubsy is best when he is not so much sarcastic, just his usual delusions of grandeur.
    b) Nostalia Critic mentions that misery is good comedy when he was talking about Sam & Max verses Animaniacs. Misery was tried with poor Arnold in the Bubsy pilot, with this you have two scenarios:
    1. Bubsy in the games is all about misery done to him, being somewhat fragile, and yet coming out ahead in the end. That didn't seem to win people over though. So...
    2. You have a comedy with Arnold and Bubsy like Sam & Max where they go into their own mayhem.

So how about we learn from the Animaniacs: Have Arnold and Bubsy, maybe even the twins as a comedy two-some or four-some and then bring in some misery of the villian and other characters you have to take out. The Villians could be the straight man, and then show some misery as Bubsy "humbles them". You get a little bit of that in Bubsy Fractured Furry Tales with level 9 when you "humble" the Genie, with greater graphics you could add more comedy.

And again, Bubsy 3D tried the misery angle, but at Bubsy's expense. But we are supposed to like Bubsy as the hero so that didn't work. So have Bubsy (and Arnold) bring some misery to the villians.

    -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Lastly, there was a review of Bubsy Fractured Furry Tales. I'm always amazed when someone reviews this game 1) because it is my fav 2) most don't have Atari Jaguars so this game is often forgotten.
In the end I think they did much better than other reviewers. Hell, took me a few days to figure out what they did in a few tries. Very impressed. And certainly played it better than when the Angry Video Game Nerd tried it. Bravo guys!

Now check out my link I sent you on what is possible with the game, practice a bit, and come back to me in about three months. I think you have potential grasshopper!

"It's not just boring, it's a yarn". LOL!!

Until next month Bubsy fans and haters.

So today I was going to write an article for this blog about generally the tactile feel you simply don't get from a tablet or touch device, and when I pulled up my blog here was this article I started to write. Wow.

    Yeh the
was a phone I really enjoyed there for a bit. Suffice to say I had to move on, but you will see how I did that in the next article. The phone age of java devices was a fun one. I played with a variety of games, a text editor, a bible program, a app that turned your screen into a flashlite (as best it could). It was the precursor to the iPhone and Android age we have now.

And one thing I tend to do when I have a device in my pocket is find a way to expand it into a computer. There is the temptation to see how much I can do on my portable device and basically make my laptop and desktop a backup storage media for my portable device.

I got some joy doing this with the Macintosh Duo (Dock) system. Walk along with a 68040 (or I believe there was a early PPC version as well?) that you use on the go, and then slide the computer in like a video tape into a dock, it self loads, and bam! Desktop. Beautiful.

The following was a helpful application that I found for the SGH-a727 which allowed me to scan through the files on the phone and move things around. I think no matter what device you have, a good file system browser is a must.

Not even sure the hyperlinks still work. Just a nod to a older age of phone tech that I enjoyed.

    Tara (right)
Venusian art criminal who has his palace on the Jovian moon Callisto, and owns all the gold mines there (TS).

    Telepathy
Form of psychic communication favoured by the Neptunians, which means they do not require the use of Elektrans to be understood. It can also be used to mesmerise or render people unconscious, but electronic shielding can protect against its effects (SN, CD, PT, TR, DW, FX). It is also used by the Deltees from the star system of Alpha Centauri (MS, DS), and the Lumina of Sirius (PL). Later on Earth, Haggarty develops a way of allowing robots to receive telepathic commands and two prototypes are built. These, however, need the brainwave patterns of the owner programmed in, meaning only that person can control it (TR).

    Teleportation
Means of transportation favoured by theDeltees from Alpha Centauri (MTS, DS) and later developed by Professor Zeffer, though regretably with some side effects (DS). The space bandits who terrorise the tiny world of Larta also appear to have a form of teleportation for their ships (TVC11)

    Telerecording
Recording of a video message (VV).

    Television Satellite
Refered to by Colonel Raeburn as one of the places where people are being affected by the floats (HI). It may be the location of the Solar Television Network (TS), and can apparently broadcast in 3D (SS)

    Ten G
The acceleration rate of a Galasphere, equal to ten times the gravity felt on Earth, at least on a journey to Jupiter (SJ). This is apparently another reason why crews use the freezer units, to avoid the discomfort experienced at that speed.

    Termoids (left)
Small and technologically advanced burrowing creatures from, presumably, the Moon. They are discovered by miner Dawlish of the Lunalt Mining Company and threatened to destroy his complex unless smuggled to Earth where they caused great damage by undermining the foundations of several cities (TVC09)

    Three D Programme
What Doctor Smith misses most on television, which apparently doesn't reach to the outer worlds such as Jupiter (SS).

    Time (1)
The setting for the series, as established in the very first episode, is 2100AD. However, the protracted voyage times - particularly to the outer planets - means that the span of the first series alone must cover several years. We would presume that 2100 would be the date of the first episode The Swamps Of Jupiter, going by the opening narration. But Slim’s comment on when lasers were discovered - “about 130 years ago, in 1961” - dates Mystery On The Moon in the early 2090s, and comments on the age of the rocket used in Forcefield X - some one hundred and fifty years after 1980 - places that episode possibly around 2130. This would be acceptable for the Galasphere crews who are consistently in hibernation but doesn’t explain the fact none of the planet based characters seem to age, bar Cassie.

    Time (2)
Professor Haggarty has theories concerning alien races experiencing time differently from people on Earth, which leads him to develop the Time Watch (TS).

    Time Watch
Resembling a conventional Twentieth Century watch, it enables the wearer to move sixty times faster. It is used by Dart to recover stolen art treasures (TS) and then conveniently forgotten until Slim uses it to rescue Dart and Husky (SD). It also reused when the Martian renegade Zota attempts to overthrow the Martian government from a base on Phobos (TW)

    Tirig
Leader of the opposition party on Mars. He occupies the Martian moon Phobos with a small band of men and attempts to seize power by releasing a nerve gas in the Martian capital (SD).

    Titan
Moon of Saturn, supposed uninhabited but home to a strange form of oviparous form of life, dubbed 'humming dogs' by Slim (right) (GT)

    Titanite
Name given to the ultra luminescent substance from the egg found on Titan (GT).

    Tokyo
The capitol of Japan in our time but part of Asia in 2100 (MTS).

    Tourists
Cresta, the capitol of Venus, has a thriving tourist trade but this drops rapidly when fear about the out-of-control Eye gets around (EV). The strange oxygen-absorbing fungus found on the asteroid Danta ends up being a tourist attraction in Antarctica (TVC01)

    Trans-Continental Monorail Express
Transport system across North American between New York and Hollywood. It carried gold bullion which was stolen by a gang of crooks using jetpacks and a helicopter (TVC02).

    Transfinitive Drive
Possibly an alternate name for the Interplanetary Overdrive. (SJ).

    Translator Ray
Used by a race of alien giants to understand Larry Dart as he explains it is not nice to steal other races power stations, even in the pursuit of knowledge (TVC07).

    Troops
General Smith has a thousand troops ready for an assault on Ganymede prior to the decision to use a rocket strike instead (ES).

    Tuhera/Toohera Jungle
Relatively unexplored area of Mars covering the equatorial region, and still home to large hairy primitive Martians. (HM)

    Tula Fish
Cetacean native to Venus and particularly abundant in the Magda Ocean. They have evolved somewhat over a few million years from small fish to a larger species with tentacle-like fins.

Trapped cosmic radiation causes the Tula to experience accelerated evolution or mutation, becoming larger still, more intelligent and with the tentacles becoming tactile. Once the cause of the freak evolution is discovered and destroyed though, it is never made clear what happens to them (HF)

    Turkish Bath
Colonel Raeburn’s favourite and most frequently interrupted form of relaxation! But that’s what you get for having a video screen in your bathroom. Kinky or what ? (WJ, UA, DS)

    Tynite
Deltan explosive, similar to dynamite (DS).

    Tyro
Overlord of the Neptunians (SN, CD, PT, TR, DW, FX) who uses various unsuccessful tactics to get the UGO to send slaves as he and his race no longer do the work thing.

    U

    Ultrasonics
The Uranian Duos communicate by ultrasonics, sound beyond that which humans can hear (DP, II, JW). Their speech disrupts the functions of robots (RR) and leads to ultrasonics being used in other situations (EV). Dart claims ultrasonics were used once to cure brain disorders and a ‘super ultrasonic’ device is used to restore Cassie when she speaks backwards after a matter transmission experiment (DS).

    Ultraviolet Rays
Used to get rid of germs in the 22nd century (DP). It may also be the basis of Contamination Control, although this is never stated. The rings of Saturn use blinding ultraviolet radiation as one of its defences (RS).

    Uniforms
The uniforms of the Space Patrol, as seen on the crew of Galasphere 347, seem fairly standardised. It consists of a sleeveless olive brown vest over light blue trousers and long-sleeved turtle neck with an interthreaded sparkle effect, worn with short boots. Crew members have a gold six-pointed star on the chest of the turtle neck, visible above the top of the vest. Captains have a gold sunburst design with a four-pointed star on the vest itself, while the sleeves of the top are a matching olive brown (or red) with a pale blue V-design running from shoulder to elbow.

It is possible the redesigned uniforms (seen later, and in published stories) involved a more white jumpsuit with a red tunic.

Husky refers to the uniform as a spacesuit (HI), suggesting the design is functional with built-in protection, only requiring the addition of a molung or helmet to be fully protective against the vacuum of space and the extremes of conditions on other planets - both logical and time-saving - but there are inconsistencies. They are protective against the fierce heat of Mercury (FM) for example, but Husky succumbs to the infrared radiation of the Saturnian rings (RS). It would also appear that they are not suitable for underwater usage (RR, HF)

Colonels wear off-white trousers and top over which is worn a shorter vest in dark olive green (or red) with gold trim and piping, with the shoulder flash of the UGO.

Generals of the United Galactic Forces wear light trousers and a pale satin shirt, over which is worn a dark sleeveless jerkin with embroided trim and the chest chain and stylised Sun symbol. Interestingly, this uniform is also worn by the President of the World Science Bureau (TVC03), suggesting either a link with the United Galactic Forces, or another 'umbrella' organisation (though not the UGO) to which both may belong.

Other uniform designs seem to involve a white trouser and tunic affair with prominent dark shoulder flashes, as seen at the Martian and Moon Observatories, and may be a variant spacesuit used by the scientific community. This design is echoed by Major Valla at Moon Station One, and some of the Jupiter Scientific HQ teams, though the colours are more mid-tone. Other variations appear to exist as functional uniforms throughout the solar system by the human communities.

    United Galactic Army
Military division of the United Galactic Organisation, headed by General Smith (RR, RS, II, ES, UA, EV, SF, SD).

    United Galactic Cross
Medal for bravery, which Slim recommends for the Lumina who return to help them find the ‘Cave of Death’ at risk to its own safety (PL).

    United Galactic Forces
Term used to describe a division of the United Galactic Army in action (SJ, TF, SD).

    United Galactic Organisation (UGO)
Federation comprising of - initially - Earth, Venus and Mars. It would be fair to assume contact and an accord between all three was established around the same time, certainly by the mid-21st Century, for the organisation to be as well established as it seems to be in 2100.

While contact has been established with Jupiter long enough for the Jovian laguage to be programmed into electrans, it is unclear whether the planet is also a member. Saturn joined after initial contact (RS), and its membership seemed to continue after a political coup was thwarted allowing the original leader Riga to regain power (GS). Neptune also joined (CD, PT) but this may simply have been a ploy to gain slave labour in the form of robots when their previous method of hijacking colony ships was discovered (SN). Mars has also threatened to leave the UGO when it became clear membership was not helping with the drought situation (WB).

The role of the UGO is never really explained but if it is, say, analagous to the United Nations of today then it probably tries to represent and balance the interests of all member planets. The Duos of Uranus are of the opinion that the UGO rules Earth but it is more than likely, even if we do not see or hear of one, that there is a President of Earth whom Colonel Raeburn represents to the other planets, while he/she deals with global matters.

The UGO has an official seal which is used to authenticate documentation (UA, GS). Above right is an approximation of this, based on the symbol on Colonel Raeburn's tunic.

    United Galactic Rules/Laws/Regulations
These are refered to on several occasions and seem reasonably consistent:
    • It is not permitted to take a person from one planet to another without permission (SJ, PT).
    • Animals and birds are not allowed on Galaspheres (SN), but exceptions are sometimes made (TF).
    • A Galasphere cannot be left unguarded (GT, II) by its crew, though exceptions are sometimes made in emergencies by using the robot (SG).
    • It is a breach of United Galactic regulations to use telepathic powers on another person (PT).
    • A Galasphere cannot land on a planet without informing Space Headquarters (SG).

    United Galactic Steel Company
Manufacturing outfit in 2100 who are having problems with their robots (EV).

    Uranians - see Duos.

    Uranian Ship
See Husky's Technical Manual: Duo Spacecraft

    Uranus
Seventh planet of the solar system. A round trip to the planet would take about about six months - 172 days (DP). A mission to Uranus in 2098 consisting of 20 men and a space freighter ended in tragedy with the men vanishing, leaving only the freighter to be found. The planet was noted as only being inhabited by plants, but these are intelligent and communicate ultrasonically at 90,000 sound cycles (DP). Haggarty is examining rocks from the Uranus polar region which are radioactive and about 4000 years old, leading Cassie to suggest there had been an atomic war there in the past (DP). The temperature at the poles is 78 degrees (DP).

    Uranus Steel
Alloy made from Uranian ore. Rockets made from Uranus steel were used to test the effectiveness of the Eye (EV).

    V

    Vacuum Door
Twin system of access in and out of Galaspheres. The inner vacuum door is usually refered to as the access to the Galasphere control room. Their usage would appear to hold much in common with modern airlocks though we do occasionally see the crew standing by the open outer vacuum door with no molung or breathing apparatus. This would suggest an unseen force (possibly the Galasphere’s own spinning energy sphere) retains some atmosphere while in space when it is active.

    Valla, Major
Bearded Venusian in charge of Moon Station One (MM).

    Venus
Second planet of the solar system. Earthlike, but referred to as both hot and with a wet climate (BS, WB) though this is not apparent from the rocky landscape seen around the capitol city of Cresta. At maximum speed, it only takes a day and a half to two days to reach from. There are at least three oceans, one of which is the Magda Ocean (HF), of which Cresta is on the west coast.

    Venusian
1/ Bearded replacement for Slim when he chooses to remain on Venus to help Gallia come to power. He acts as pilot and is very adept but is never named (VV).
2/ Dark haired and bearded member of Marog’s gang, an expert in physics and bomb building. He tells Marog it will take him about a week to build a hydrogen bomb but perishes when Husky sabotages the launch mechanism (WB).

Venusian President - see President of Venus

    Venusians (right)
Petite humanoid race with only three fingers, slanted eyes, and slightly pointed heads. Their voices tend to be high pitched in both sexes and most but not all have characteristicaly silver hair. They are a highly logical intelligent race, priding themselves on being cleverer than Earthmen or Martians (EVT). Colonel Raeburn states that Venusians knew nothing about engineering before joining the UGO (PT), which may be a reason for little of the planet seeming to be developed with the exception of their capitol Cresta. A ‘V’ on the Elektrans indicates that they have their own language, though most we see speak English very well, and some of their written symbols are in evidence on Gallia's chart (VV). Most Venusian names end in the letter 'A' - Marla, Borra, Patra etc - which suggests 'Slim' may be a nickname, but this is not conclusive.

    Vibra Gun
Sonic weapon used by Mall and his assistant to kill the Loomis. Long and slender, it appears to fire a stream of mist, though this could simply be the beam disturbing the atmosphere. The sound waves can also disturb compasses from some distance away (SJ).

    Vision Phone
Older form of communication comprising of a wall mounted screen and phone mouthpiece (TVC02).

    Vitamin Pills
What Jones survives on for the 41 day trip to Saturn when he stows away on Galasphere 347 (MTS). Husky bemoans having to live on them when Galasphere 347 has to return to Saturn (GS).

    Vitascope
A device that could be carried in almost any spaceship and, from an orbit within two hundred miles of a planet's surface, would detect any form of life and focus selected scenes upon a video-screen. The vitascope tested by a two Galasphere mission to planet M17 showed fearsome monsters but on landing on the surface, both Lieutenant Roget of Galasphere 774, and later the crew of Galasphere 347, found nothing (HS01).

    Volcanoes
An undersea volcano is responsible for the chemical which combines with sea water and eats away half of the electronic brain of robots at the sea farm (RR). The Venusian capitol of Cresta (left) is ringed by dead volcanoes, though it may be that some are just dormant. One is used in a plan to spread a powder that puts people to sleep for two days, in a takeover bid by Slim’s uncle Gallia (VV)

    Voltek (left)
Alien space raider convicted of piracy and condemned to life strapped into the chair of a spaceship with a crew of robots who would do his every bidding - except release him unless someone agreed to take his place. (TVC10)

    W

    Waffalator
Device used by Tara to ‘stir up the atmosphere’ and produce a distracting noise that enables him to steal art treasures (TS).

    Waggon (right)
Remote control vehicle used at the mining base on the asteroid Omega. It runs on a steel track and picks up its electrical power through steel balls on its underside (TVC03).

    Walkie-Talkies
Old fashioned term for a portable radio transmitter-receiver, and used by Dart to refer to personal communication (FM).

    'Walking Water'
Term used by Larry Dart to describe the strange liquid found in a lake on Jupiter which has ability to cause inanimate objects to move of their own accord (WJ).

    War Museum
Implied by Haggarty's niece and nephew, and where they suggest his Aunt Min's hideously coloured cardigan should be placed, for its part in preventing a great interplanetary war (TVC05).

    Watkins, Professor (left)
Scientist and friend of Professor Haggarty who is abducted by John Magnum to the planet Humida (TVC03).

    Weight Controllers
Possibly another term for the gravity repulsion used on Galaspheres (SJ, MTS).

    Whirlwind
A frequent event on Mars, apparently, though not all become contaminated with lethal fungicide and blown towards Earth (DW).

    Wildlife Preserve
The Dictum Forest is a Martian Wildlife Preserve, and weapons are not allowed there (TF).

    Williams
Head of the United Galactic Steel Company, who are having trouble with some of the robots they produce (EV).

    World Science Bureau
Global organisation of Earth scientists in the year 2100, several of whom are abducted by vengeful lost astronaut John Magnum (TVC03).

    Wotan
Capitol City of Mars, and home to approximately one million people. Husky refers to it as his capitol but it is unclear whether that means he comes from there but it is home to the palace of the Martian President (right). It is threatened by destruction from a rogue asteriod (WA) and later blackmailed by Tyrig (SD) and Marog (WB), both from bases on the Martian moon Phobos.

    Yobba Rays
Noted on the checklist for the lift programme of Galaspheres, these are used to penetrate the cloud cover of a planet viewed from space, either for routine patrol or as a prelude to landing. Larry Dart suggests trying them for a view of Jupiter through its cloudy atmosphere, without success (SJ), and also when approaching Venus (HF, VV, EVT).

    Yria (see Irya)

    Z

    Zeffer/Zephyr, Professor (right)
Martian rival to Professor Haggerty and friend of Colonel Raeburn, who refers to him as ‘old Zeff’! (WA) He is in charge of the Martian Observatory. His instinct about the danger of the rogue asteroid proves to be correct when his assistant observes the collision that puts it out of orbit (WA). His star measuring equipment inadvertently makes objects disappear, including Husky (HI) and Gabbler (HM), which may have led to him stumbling across the secret of matter transmission (DS). Zeffer is the first to pick up the signals from Alpha Centauri and track the voyage of Galasphere 347 to that star (MS). He also tracks Galasphere 347 when a malfunction causes it to accelerate out of control far beyond the solar system (NP) and finds a new planet inside the orbit of Mercury (TR). Zeffer also keeps track of local events, and notices when Tirig and his men occupy the Martian moon Phobos (SD).

    Zeffer’s Assistant (above, far right)
Fair haired Earthman who assists Zeffer in the Martian Observatory. He is fairly new to the establishment (WA) but appears to stay through the course of both series (HI, MS, NP, SD, DS). Strangely, he appears with glasses and a moustache in one episode (SD).

    Zenton
Mineral found on Uranus and Neptune. The cloud that blocks the sun’s rays is made of electrically charged particles of Zenton (CD).

    Zergon Ray
Used to abort the Automatic Time Control for the Freezer Unit on Galaspheres by remote control from Space Headquarters in times of emergency, such as the disappearance of the Pluto Colony Ship (SN) or the catastrophic conditions on Earth (ES). An attempt is made to use the Zergon Ray to revive the crew when the Galasphere goes out of control but this also fails (NP)

    Zota
Martian who establishes a base on one of the moons of Mars - possibly Phobos - and attempts to overthrow the Government by use of a ray which renders people unconscious for 24 hours over a radius of 50 miles (TW).
  17. doctorclu
    M

    M17
Small, newly discovered planet on the edge of explored space, seemingly inhabited by fearsome monsters when viewed by the new Vitascope but found to be devoid of animal life on exploration (HS01).

    Mac
Bearded Martian in the employ of Berridge and operator of the laser weapon used to blackmail Earth (MM).

    Magda Ocean
Ocean on the planet Venus, and home to the Tula Fish, or at least the ones evolving naturally now (HF).

    Magnum, John
Astronaut, missing and presumed dead by the year 2100. He left Earth when he was refused a position of power and crashed on Humida, finding the atmosphere was not as poisonous as previously supposed. Instead it sustained him and kept him alive for seventy years. It also sustained the bat-like creatures which became his servants and abducted scientists in an attempt to invade Earth (TVC03).

    Mak
A type 1Robot (left) used by Raeburn at Space Headquarters (TS, JW, WB).

    Marga
The Miocell capitol on Northern Jupiter (SW).

    Marla (right)
Venusian secretary of Colonel Raeburn. Silver haired, classically attractive and super efficient, she is extremely loyal to Raeburn and reluctant to abandon him even in time of crisis (RR, MM), and it is suggested there is a caring, though platonic, friendship when he falls ill (HF, TR). We rarely see her out from behind her desk but she does socialise with Professor Haggarty’s daughter Cassie, and occasionally Slim, although it is indicated the two Venusians simply enjoy each others company (RR). She seems to be ignored by the Duo mind control, perhaps believing that Venusian loyalty would not make her question Raeburn’s odd behavior but they do not allow for her intelligence and sense of right. Her bringing of the situation to the attention of Professor Haggarty leads to the invasion being thwarted (II).

    Marog
Extremist criminal who, with members of his gang, build a hydrogen bomb to blackmail the Martian President into giving them a free pardon. He perishes when Mars strikes back at his base on the Martian moon Phobos with a missile attack (WB).

    Marrar
A small Martian town a hundred miles from the capitol (TW).

    Mars
Fourth planet of the solar system, three-quarters of which is desert (WB) There are no hydrogen clouds around the planet, which makes trying to create artificial rain clouds in an attempt to overcome drought difficult (WB). It seems to have a perpetual energy crisis (GT).

    Marshall, Doctor (left)
Scientist on the Moon Observatory. (ES, DW, FX)

    Martian Franc
Unit of currency on Mars (SF).

    Martian Measles
Infectious virus characterised by spiral spots, and requiring quarantine from other Martians. It can also be caught by humans (HS02)

Martian President - see President of Mars

    Martian Sausage
Delicacy that Husky is particularly fond of (FM, TR, JW) but which is reputed to be quite evil smelling (SW) which is perhaps why no-one other than Martians are seen eating them.

    Martians
Humanoid race native to Mars. They are well-built and tall with most being seven foot tall (TW, EVT) and physically strong, with wiry or spiky hair, wide faces and staring eyes. Or at least the males are, as we never see any Martian females - at least not knowingly. The Martian accent is vaguely Teutonic, and an ‘M’ on the Elektrans indicates they have their own language, though we only hear it once (HM). Prior to contact with Earth, the Martians had no knowledge of science (PT) which may explain the energy crisis on their planet (GT). While superficially similar to humans, Martians have a different physiology which means they are not affected by a toxic fungicide (DW) or get electric shocks as easily (JW). Most Martian names end in the letter 'G' - Brog, Marog, Tirig etc - which suggests that 'Husky' may just be a nickname, but this is not conclusive.

    Mason, Doctor
Scientist who develops Kinotine. He is abducted by Kolig in an attempt to obtain the rights to it, and then killed in a rocket accident when apparently freed to return home (SF).

    Mall, Doctor (far right)
Martian scientist who killed Lumis on Jupiter to sell their skins for profit (SJ)..

    Mall’s Assistant (right)
Martian who killed the scientific expedition on Jupiter, although he didn’t mean to. He believes by letting Dart know what the Lumi skins are for, that the Space Patrol captain may be persuaded by a percentage of the profits (SJ).

    Medal
Still a recognised form of decoration for bravery in 2100. Slim is given a medal by the Venusian President for foiling Gallia's plan (VV). See also: United Galactic Cross

    Mercury
Closest planet to the sun, with a gravity only one third of Earth. It is uninhabited but would appear to have been explored in the past as no big deal is made of Galasphere 347 landing there to install a transmitter (FM). Journey time is three days, four hours from Earth. Galasphere 347 is sent on a routine patrol of Mercury while testing the range of 'Busy Lizzie's' telepathic control range (TR).

    Meson/Meeson/Meesen Power
Main power source of the Galaspheres. The Meson Unit is at the top of the central cylinder, rising and falling in accordance with power usage, though part of the mechanism is the rotating discs, referred to as 'orbiting wheels' (EVT), seen by the vacuum door (HM). It seems very prone to failing, doing so in several episodes (BS, GT, HM).

    Miga
Venusian industrialist who moves a newly discovered asteroid, composed out the rare mineral Plutonite, to an orbit close to his home planet to exploit it more profitably. While negotiating with him for the Plutonite, Dart and Husky discover he is behind acts of space piracy and is in possession of stolen UGO gold (UA).

    Miocells (left)
Peaceful four-armed humanoids who live on Northern Jupiter, and who have been at war with the aggresive Dells for a hundred years (SW)

    Mirror
Large parabolic reflector, variations of which are used several times. A mirror reflects and concentrates the sun’s rays on the cloud of Zenton particles, burning it away (CD) and one made of Roxite is used to deflect Berridge’s laser attacks back at his moon crater base (MM). A reflector is used to interfere with radio waves beamed from Uranus, resulting in the waves feeding back and destroying the Duos responsible (JW). There’s nothing quite like getting your own back, is there?

    Missiles
    See Husky's Technical Manual: Missiles

    ‘Mr Bell’
Domoid alien from the star system of Betelguese. Resembling a large woolly hat, ‘Mr Bell’ is stranded on Earth when Raeburn accidentaly shoots his ship down. Gabbler makes fun of him and then he nearly doesn’t survive the trip back to his mothership when Galasphere 347 is diverted to Jupiter. Dart falls into, and becomes trapped in, a hole and the alien sacrifices nearly all his life energies to sustain him during the lengthy process of digging him out. After which, the Betelguesians are never heard from again. Strange, that... (TB).

    Molung
Mobile Lung, comprising of a cylindrical helmet and later on, a back pack with oxygen tanks. There may be two types of helmet in use - an early version, seen only on Jupiter, seems to be constructed of gauze (right) and may only filter an atmosphere’s harmful elements (SJ, SS). The other, more common version is of a clear material (far right) and may serve as a space or diving helmet (RR, HF, JW) as well, protecting the wearer completely.

    Monarch, The
Spaceliner that cruises between Earth and Mars and is used by the World Science Bureau to take scientists to a conference. It is raided by John Magnum, and the scientists abducted by him (TVC03).

    Mona Lisa
Still resident in the Louvre in Paris, France until stolen by Tara. It is retrieved by Dart, along with other stolen treasures, using Haggarty’s time watch (TS).

    Monobile
The main form of transport around Space Headquarters. Cigar shaped and seemingly only seating two, they travel through a network of transparent plastic steel tubes around New York of the future and, one would assume, most other cities on Earth. They are capable of speeds up to 200 miles per hour (EVT). Raeburn asks Marla to get ‘his monobile’, implying they may be owned personally but this is not clear as no-one else does (DP, TF, FM). It would seem they are under some form of automatic control, as Gabbler is seen using one (RR). The transport tubes may also employ an air conditioning system, as Raeburn refers to going for a drive and getting some fresh air (TS). Larger passenger carrying versions are also seen (TVC07). Monobiles are not in evidence on Mars or Venus, and may be an Earth invention.

    Moon
Natural satellite of Earth, orbiting at a distance of 240,000 miles. It has been mined extensively with little new mining in a hundred years (MM), though an ore called Lunalt still provides a thriving industry (TVC09). Dart uses the mountains there for recreational climbing (DS). It may also be home to a technologically advanced species of burrowing creatures called Termoids who live in its hollow centre (TVC09).

    Moon Crater Four
Site of a laser used to destroy the threatening artificial planet built by the Neptunians (DW)

    Moon Observatory
It investigates the artificial cloud that threatens Earth (CD) and also observes explosions on the Sun (ES). It is manned by various scientists, but notably the bearded Doctor Marshall, who discovers the artificial planet made by the Neptunians (DW)

    Moon Station One (below)
Lunar base commanded by the Venusian Major Valla (MM)

    Morse Code
An old form of communication in 2100 but still well known enough to be understood, even by Martians (SN). The pulse beam communications from planet Delta in the star system of Alpha Centauri use a form of morse code to relay messages (MS, DS)

    N

    Neptune
Eighth planet of the solar system, home to a race of highly advanced but atrophied humanoids. It has higher gravity than Earth but the air has been purified and apparently oxygenated as molungs are not needed (PT). Travel time is variable according to the vast distance, ranging from 12 weeks (SN) to 4 months, twenty days (PT) The surface is depicted as bleak and rocky, and it is reasonable to assume the Neptunians never lived on the surface owing to the cold conditions and distance from the sun. Doctor Duncan, curiously, plans to escape to there when his plan fails (ES).

    Neptunian Ship
Resembling a silvery dumbell with nodules at either end, it conveys Tyro to Earth and back when he seemingly agrees to join the UGO (PT). A fleet of 60 of them are used to dispense magnetic particles around Earth in another attempt to extort slaves (FX).

    Neptunians (left)
Bald slender humanoids with large faceted eyes and small mouths. They communicate telepathically, luminescing when doing so, and are apparently thousands of years ahead but want nothing to do with other races. However, they know a lot about Earth, such as the existence of Space Headquarters and Colonel Raeburn. They have developed advanced mental powers but their bodies have weakened so much they now require slaves to work for them (SN). They communicate with Earth for the first time in years after attempts, some successful, to hijack colony ships bound for Pluto but this is again an attempt to extort slaves from other planets (CD). When this is unsuccessful, their leader Tyro journeys to Earth with a view to obtaining robots to do their work on joining the UGO (PT), but they later abandon the idea prefering living slaves (DW). They have not needed to use the sun’s rays for a thousand years (CD) using nuclear energy instead (PT) but use an undiscovered planet within the orbit of Mercury as a 'holiday home' (TR).

    Nerve Gas
Developed by the scientist Borse, and by which means Tirig plans to overthrow the Martian Presidency from a base on the moon Phobos (SD).

    Newspapers
Implied to be still in existence and available in the Rest Room areas for Galasphere crews (MM), this would appear to be confirmed by the Space Age Herald reporting the theft of gold (TVC02).

    New York
The location of Space Headquarters in the year 2100 (SJ). It is also the terminus of one end of the Trans-Continental Monorail Express (TVC02)

    Noxids
Green skinned aliens in a war against the inhabitants of the planet Spectros (AN01).

    Nuclear Heating
Used to warm the mining colony on Pluto but even it is susceptible to the severe cold of the winter there (FM), as is the nuclear heating on Earth when the Neptunian cloud blocks the Sun's rays (CD).

    Nuclear Power Station
Taken in one foul scoop by a vast orb of alien origin, as a sample of Earth technology. It s occupants are eventually rescued by the crew of Galasphere 347 (TVC07).

    Nuclear Rockets
Using in the attack against Doctor Duncan on Ganymede (ES)

    O

    Observation Cabin
Refered to on many occasions as an section of the Galasphere, presumably in the outer ring, where it is possible to view outside the craft directly by use of portholes (SN). It is also where Patra analyses the water sample from the Magda Ocean (HF), and where Lizzie the telepathic robot is told to rest when not being tested on a patrol of Mercury (TR).

    Omega (right)
Asteroid and only known source of the rare metal Dectium, used in atomic reactors all over Earth. Omega has a breathable atmosphere, and geyser holes that spout liquid dectium cover the surface. At night, these geyser spouts can freeze solid (TVC04).

    ‘Operation Ice Cube’
Project to utilise ice from the surface of Pluto and transfer it to Mars, where it would be melted back to water for use in thermonuclear plants in an attempt to solve the energy crisis there (BS).

    Orbital Drive
Used between Primary Drives and Interplanetary Overdrives on Galaspheres, when orbiting a planet prior to a landing. Its speed range, checked prior to launch, is apparently zero to 20,000 miles per hour.

    Orbs
Large, seemingly automated, ships of unknown origin that suddenly arrive on Earth and abduct an entire power station. Their owners turn out to be alien giants on a mission of exploration and sample collecting (TVC07)

    Oxygen
Gas vital to human life, comprising about 20% of the atmosphere of Earth. We can assume the atmosphere of Venus is similar to Earth, though with a higher oxygen content (GS). The atmosphere of Mars is also similar but some areas, such as the Toohera Jungle, may require molungs though it is unclear why (HM). Oxygen is lethal to silicon based life, such as the Lumina (PL), and purportedly to Saturnians (GS) although this contradicts other information (RS, MTS).
    P

    Pallas
One of the major asteroids in orbit between Mars and Jupiter. It is the location of a sonar relay tower that keeps Jupiter (and possibly other planets) in contact with Space Headquarters on Earth when they are on the other side of the Sun. It is damaged by a meteorite and has to be repaired by an engineering team. At the time Galasphere 347 visited it, the asteroid was only eight days away from Earth (SS).

    Park
Implied by Raeburn to be close enough to Space Headquarters for a lunchtime stroll (WJ).

    Patra (right)
Venusian marine biologist who finds the Tula Fish are evolving rapidly and accompanies the crew of the Galasphere in their mission to the Magda Ocean to investigate (HF).

    Phobos
Larger of the two moons of the planet Mars, and a popular hideout for crooks and renegades. It is occupied by Tirig and his men (SD) and then by Marog (WB), and possibly Zota (TW)

    Planet 'Ten'
Unnamed planet of the solar system, orbiting beyond Pluto at a distance of 7,000 million miles from the sun. Despite this, the planet is habitable owing to hot underwater springs that prevent the surface from freezing, with large fertile green areas. The inhabitants are humanoid giants who learnt English from the crew of a Galasphere that went missing twenty years ago. They are non-hostile but regard the crews as toys or playthings and refuse to let them leave. The fact the language barrier has already been overcome suggests to Colonel Raeburn that the planet could join the UGO at some point in the future (NP).

    Planet ‘Zero’
Planet within the orbit of Mercury, presumably only some twenty million miles from the Sun. It is discovered by the Martian Observatory and on investigation, found to be inhabited by the Neptunians (TR)

    Plastic Steel
22nd century alloy that the Spirgum spider's web is reputedly tougher than (SF)

    Plastifoam/Plastafoam (right)
Multi-purpose substance, primarily used in a non-lethal weapon that binds the victim in a thin webbing (SJ, MTS, TF, SD, TVC02, TVC03) and can be dissolved with an anti-plastifoam gun (MTS). But the material can also be used for building habitations on Pluto and the Moon, suggesting a thicker version is airtight and can be created quickly (VV). Mixed with explosive it can also be used to sabotage accelerating freighters (ES).

    Plastifoam/Plastafoam Gun (left)
Bulbous, twin cylindered weapon that emits a substance that will bind and hold a lifeform without harming it (SJ, MTS, TF). Another more slender rifle-like affair is also seen in use (SD), as well as a more practical pistol affair (TVC02, TVC03).

    Pluto
Ninth and outermost planet of the solar system, orbiting the sun every 240 years according to Raeburn (FM). It is home to a colony of some 6000 Martian miners (FM), presumably for the Plutonite used in Galasphere production. This would suggest the mine had been operating for some time, though its status as colony may be recent (SN). Pluto is approaching its furthest point from the sun and has been for thirty years, causing problems for the miners, and an attempt was made to transmit heat in the form of radio waves from Mercury (FM). This proved successful, and the miners were able to cut ice from the surface for shipping to Mars in an attempt to solve the energy crisis there. During the operation, Galasphere 347 was buried in the icefield and Captain Dart discovered carbon in the form of coal indicating there may once have been plant life on the distant world million of years ago (BS).

    Plutonite
Strong but lightweight (FM, EVT) metal mined on Pluto, and which the Galaspheres are constructed from (EV). The material is supposedly rare and resources are dwindling until an asteroid made from it is discovered (UA).

    Polydon
Material developed seven years ago on Venus for building. Its waste by-product was illegally dumped in the Magda Ocean, forming a barrier and causing a build up of cosmic radiation (HF).

    Powder
Anesthetic substance used by Gallia, powerful enough to cause paralysis and unconsciousness for about two days. It is administered by an unknown means in tests but distributed en masse by planting the containers in a volcano close to the Venusian capitol of Cresta (VV).

    President of Mars (right)
Young, typical looking Martian wearing a long robe of office. His voice is prone to changing (WA,TF, HI, GT) so he is later succeeded with an older, grey-haired and moustached Martian with more consistent tones (SF, SD, WB).

    President of Venus
Silver haired and bearded, he operates from the capitol city Cresta (HF, ES, VV, UA, EV, SF).

President of the World Science Bureau (left)
Person in charge of global organisation of scientists in the year 2100. He berates Colonel Raeburn when several scientists are abducted en route from Mars to Earth. It is interesting to note the President wears a similar emblem to General Smith of the United Galactic Army, suggesting the Bureau is possibly connected to the military, or that both come under another organisation (though not the UGO, as Raeburn sports different emblems. (TVC03).

    Primary Drive
As it implies, the first drive used by a Galasphere for lift from a planet and also, conversely, the last on landing. It is replaced by Orbital Drive on leaving the atmosphere, if not departing for space immediately.

    Protein Pills
Concentrated food that space rations are mainly comprised of (EVT).

    Pulse Beam
Method of (presumably) faster than light communication used by the Deltans of Alpha Centauri to communicate with other star systems. As standard radio can take years, presumably this uses a code (like Morse) to send messages (MS, DS).

    Q

    Quadrapeds
One of the vicious forms used by the shape-changing creatures encountered by the crew of Galasphere 347 on a small planet beyond Saturn (TVC06). A species of wild caninoid quadrapeds was also encountered on an artificial planet whose crew had disappeared (AN02).

    R

    Radiation Clouds
Defensive measure used by Doctor Fendoe to prevent retaliation on his Dectium mining plant on the asteroid Omega, for attempting to blackmail Earth into paying whatever price he demanded. The clouds formed an impenetrable cover, keeping the Space Army out but also trapping Galasphere 347 on the surface (TVC04).

    Radio Impulse Cookbook
Suggested to Colonel Raeburn by Professor Haggarty as the best guide for robot 'Busy Lizzie' to prepare meals for him (TR).

    Radio Room (left)
Used to broadcast ultrasonic transmissions to paralyse the rebelling robots (RR, II)

    Radio Tower
Tower close to Space Headquarters in New York that bears more than a passing resemblance to the Post Office Tower (now Telecom Tower) of the late 20th and early 21st century. It is sometimes refered to as the Communications Tower, and at other times it seems to be refered to as the Control Tower (II), which monitors space flight, presumably in conjunction with Space Headquarters.

    Raeburn, Colonel Carl
Sporting a neat moustache and blond but greying crew-cut hairstyle that betrays his maturer age, Colonel Raeburn heads Space Patrol and the United Galactic Organisation. His residence is only 120 yards due north west from Space Headquarters. After Dart brings him a cutting from the holy tree of the Saturnians (RS), he appears to take an interest in cultivating it (MTS, TR), with full grown blooms starting to appear around the office and an especially large specimen dominating Marla's office! He has a particular penchant for driving his monobile around too.

(N.B.. The first name Carl is never used in the series and comes from a television listing for the episode Mystery On The Moon from the Scottish magazine The Viewer. This is in all probability a misspelling of 'Col.' but as he is never given a first name we felt this would fit equally well.)

    Raiders
Space pirates who have attacked ships using a powerful electric ray (TVC10)

    Red Drop Amusement Park
A centre of entertainment on the planet Mars. This is, Husky says, nothing like it on Earth (HS02).

    Rehabilitation
The process of checking a spaceship is ready for its next mission. This is usually carried out by a seperate team of technicians while the crew are resting and can take at least a few hours, even in an emergency (SJ).

    Rembrandt
Miga has a painting by Rembrandt in his home (UA).

    Rescue Jet 992
Help despatched by Marla to aid Larry Dart and Slim who had been tied up and left in the Rockie by a gang of crooks (TVC02).

    Rest Room
Area near Space Headquarters reserved for crews to relax in or wait on standby for missions. It is not known whether these are reserved for specific crews, as there never seem to be any mixing or socialising. Food is readily available, as are newspapers - presumably so crews can keep up with world events for the long periods they are away (MM).

    Riga
Leader of the Saturnians, who is deposed by Simba and imprisoned. Raeburn suspects a coup has taken place and sends Galasphere 347 to investigate. They discover Riga and free him, and the situation is left with him returning with the United Galactic Army to regain control (GS)

    Roberts (left)
    1. Duty officer who accompanies Raeburn in investigating the destruction of the Leyhart Building (MM).
    2. Doctor who treats Colonel Raeburn (HF).

    Robot ‘347’
The resident robot on Galasphere 347. It is seen many times but usually is only refered to as looking after the systems while the crew are in the freezer unit, or making a landing in a potentially hostile environment (FM). Disruptive communication with the robot saves Galasphere 347 from destruction as it approaches Venus (EV). Despite the fact a crew member is usually required to guard a Galasphere, in emergencies the robot can (SG).

    Robot Control
1/ Referred to in a number of episodes by the Galasphere crews, Robot Control is used for various situations - more commonly a landing on a planet - where precision beyond that of human skill may be required, or possibly to allow the crew to concentrate on more important matters. (TF, MM, GT, FM, PT, ES)
2/ Robot Control in Space Headquarters is where, presumably, all robots are monitored and directed from, usually by other robots. This indicates that robots have developed to a high degree of artificial intelligence and are trusted in quite high positions, as well as being self-regulating.

    Robot Eye
Scanning device used by Robot Control on Galaspheres to determine whether a landing is safe (FM).

    Robot Type 1
Angular standard design for most of the robots used by the UGO, with a blocky head and body and spindly limbs. They carry out a variety of tasks, such as maintaining the Galaspheres while their crews are in the Freezer Unit, deep sea farming (RR, MTS, JW) and as doctors (SS). They are constructed of Roxite metal and impervious to lasers and gamma rays. They can, however, be immobilised by ultrasonic sound (RR, EV, DS).

    Robot Type 2
Smaller, smoother humanoid automatons seen around Space Headquarters and the Atlantic Sea Farms. The one in Space Headquarters was referred to as a special courier (WJ), while those at the sea farms seem to share the same duties as the Type 1s (RR, TR). Haggarty modifies a Type 2 robot to receive orders telepathically, and another is dubbed ‘Busy Lizzie’ for use by Raeburn. These were distinguishable by having striped patterns on their bodies and a letter printed on their chest (TR).

    Robots (Deltan)
Seen only briefly, these seem identical to those seen at Space Headquarters. It may be that the Great Brain was able to read Irya’s mind while visiting Earth and copied the idea wholesale, though where it got the metal to build them is anyone’s guess (DS).

    Robots
Crew of a spaceship that served as prison to the alien raider Voltek, unless someone volunteered to take his place (TVC10).

    Rock Climbing
A favourite pastime of Larry Dart, particularly on the Moon (DS).

    Rocket Bases One To Six
Used to launch a nuclear attack against Doctor Duncan on Ganymede, Base One is Siberia, with Nevada possibly being Base Two (ES).

    Rocket Interceptors (left)
Bulbous-headed missiles used by Tara to try and destroy Galasphere 347 (TS) and by Doctor Duncan to counter the attack by General Smith (ES).

    Rocket Mail
Able to transport goods from Tokyo to New York in 45 minutes (MM)

    Roget, Lieutenant
Space Patrol officer commanding Galasphere 774, who disobeyed instructions from Captain Fowler not to land on planet M17 (HS01).

    Rubber Paint
Method of insulating a ship against the effects of an electric ray used by space raiders (TVC10).
(N.B. - On a factual note, it is interesting to note rubber paint - a form of latex - was also used by Martin and Heather Granger in the making of the faces of the puppets in the pilot film Paul Starr. One wonder if this is what gave Roberta Leigh the idea for the story... )

    Ruminov Metal
Element that machines forming the drive system on Betelguesian ships are made from. There appears to be no equivilant in our solar system. If there was, and Bloxine Fuel was available to power it, it would be possible to travel faster than light (TB).

    S

    Saturn
Sixth planet of our Solar System, a gas giant surrounded by spectacular, flashing rings which are actually the visible part of an extensive defensive system of radiation belts (RS). Travel time is ranges from 41 days (GS) to 44 days (RS). The atmosphere is predominantly carbon dioxide (GS).

    Saturnian Grass
Identical in appearance to grass on Earth, the main difference is it absorbs oxygen, emits carbon dioxide and is resilient to weedkiller (GS).

    Saturnian Ship
Discovered by Galasphere 347 close to Saturn. It, like most Earth ships, is cigar shaped but with fluting along its length and a nozzle at the back (RS, MTS). Another type, resembling the Neptunian ‘dumbell’ design, is used later and it is interesting to speculate whether some form of trade or agreement exists between the two worlds considering both were once off-limits (GS).

    Saturnians
Four armed, bipedal and amphibious reptilian species from Saturn. They have six claw-like fingers and toes on each limb. Their native language is either a growl or gutteral jabbering, while their translated speech is deep in tone and cultured. For reasons unspecified they chose to isolate themselves from the other inhabitants of the Solar System by energy fields, the visible part of which is seen as their planet’s spectacular, flashing rings (RS). Even though it is evident they still travel in space, it may be they are somewhat paranoid or fearful of other races, having observed them in the past. But they are willing to reverse this policy, allowing Larry Dart to be the first outsider to visit their world, though they reverse it again when he takes leaves from the ‘holy tree’ without realising their worth (RS). They are more than willing to help Earth by harvesting these leaves, curing a fungus that is destroying crops but are again extremely volatile when it seems an Earth disease has been brought to their planet (MTS). Despite the apparent peace, there is discord on Saturn and the leader Riga is deposed and imprisoned by Simba who is hostile to Earth and attempts to invade it. Riga is freed by the crew of Galasphere 347 and the last we hear is that the Saturnian leader plans to return with the United Galactic Army to retake his world (GS). There is some confusion as to whether the Saturnians breathe the same air as humans. Initial visits indicate that in their underground caves, the atmosphere is breathable for humans at least for short periods (RS, MTS) but subsequently they attempted to replace the oxygen in the atmosphere of Earth with carbon dioxide by seeding the planet with Saturnian grass as part of a colonisation bid (GS).

    Scientific Headquarters
There is a scientific headquarters on Phobos but it appears to be disused, though it seems to make a handy base for renegades and convicts (SD, WB).

    'Shape Changers' (right)
Strange unknown species that appears to able to shift its form from one species to another in response to the fear and emotions of other beings, appearing as thorny bushes, many-tentacled creatures, and vicious quadrapeds. They trap the crew of a crashed ship and nearly succeed in scaring off the crew of Galasphere 347 until Larry Dart realises a solution. In their natural form, they appear to resemble large star-fish (TVC06).

    Sked
Lartan who takes the initiative of contacting the Space Patrol to defend his world from space bandits, but who hatches a plan of abducting Professor Haggarty in order to make sure this happens (TVC11).

    Skins
The giant of planet ‘Ten’ has skins of a spotted quadraped in his lair, implying he is either a hunter, or that he has little taste in decor (NP).

    Simba
New leader of Saturn, friendly to Earth on the surface but secretly hostile. He plans to conquer Earth by seeding the planet with Saturnian Grass which will absorb the oxygen and replace it with carbon doixide. His fate is apparently sealed when the original leader, Riga, is freed and plans to return with the United Galactic Army from Earth (GS).

    Silver Forest
Spectacular glittering trees on Venus, one of the last homes of the Spirigum Spiders (SF).

    Sirius
The brightest star in the night sky, approximately 8 light years from Earth, and the star system where the planet Lumen can be found (PL). Dart comments the egg found on Titan is as ‘bright as Sirius’ (GT).

    Slim
Resident Venusian crewmember of Galasphere 347. Petite and silver haired, like most of his fellow Venusians, Slim would appear to be Galasphere 347’s pilot and navigator. Possibly the youngest of the crew and certainly the smallest, Slim is as dedicated and loyal a crew member as you can hope for. Even an apparent change of alligiance to his uncle Gallia in a power coup on his home planet was simply a ruse to find a way of stopping him (VV). There is a friendly friction between him and Husky, borne of their very different cultures and characters, but it never interferes with their professionalism. Like Husky, we never learn whether Slim is a nickname - derived from his small and slender appearance - or his real name.
Slim has an encyclopedic knowledge - and way of speaking. Never using a few short words when twenty long ones will suffice, he is the walking repository of facts and always on the lookout to expand what he knows - art and culture seem the current fad with him (TF) - but his curiosity on more than one occasion leads him into a dangerous situation... (GT)
His parents are still alive and on one occasion Slim invites both Dart and Husky to visit with him (SF) - an indication of the deep friendship the crew share with each other.

    'Small Planet'
Rocky and airless world beyond Saturn which is home to a shape-changing species that seems to feed on the fear and emotions of other creatures (TVC06).

    Smith, Doctor
One of two doctors on the Scientific Headquarters on Jupiter (SS, WJ, TB).

    Smith, General
Head of the United Galactic Army. Despite his higher rank, General Smith can be overruled by Colonel Raeburn as the United Galactic Organisation would appear to have more powers in some matters.
Smith has a somewhat over aggresive outlook not quite in keeping with the peaceful setting of 2100, quite happy to destroy a moon harbouring criminal factions (RR, RS, TF, TS, MS, II, HF, ES, UA, EV, SF, SD, GS, WB)

    Smoking
None of the regular characters are seen to smoke in the televised series, with the exception of Colonel Raeburn who is seen with a pipe (JW). Dart is referred to as having a pocket lighter (TVC08) which may imply he smokes too, and Husky, in the comic adaptation of Secret Formula, is also seen to smoke while waiting for Dart outside Kolig's residence.

    Snakes
Also found on Jupiter, suggesting these may have been brought from Earth as the Lumis are refered to as the only (native) animal life (SS, WJ). It is theorised that the rock which causes Husky to shrink may be poison from snakes on a long destroyed planet (SS).

    Solar Television Network
Interplanetary broadcaster in 2100 (TS), possibly operating from a large manned satellite in orbit around Earth (HI)

    Sonar Beam
Standard means of interplanetary communication and tracking in 2100, and presumably nothing to do with sonar (abbreviation of ‘sound navigation ranging’) used in the twentieth century. It is seemingly instanteous with no time delay in communications to the outer planets. There are transmitter relays at various points in the solar system, such as on the asteroids Pallas (SS) and Danta (TVC01)

    Space Age Herald
Newspaper reporting the theft of the gold bullion (TVC02)

    Space Army (left)
Possibly a division of the United Galactic Army, who are called to help capture a gang of crooks tracked to a strange planet beyond Mars (TVC02), and also deal with the renegade Doctor Fendoe on the asteroid Omega (TVC04).

    Space Bandits
Raiders who terrorise the outer Solar System, and especially worlds too far to normally be considered part of the Galactic Union, such as Larta (TVC11).

    Space Headquarters
Based in New York at the start of the 22nd century, in a futuristic skyscraper with a landing platform for Galaspheres.

    Space Headquarters Cresta
Planetary division of the United Galactic Organisation on Venus. Dart calls them for help when Husky is entwined in the web of a Spirigum Spider in the Silver Forest. (SF)

    Space Helmet
Alternative term for the later, perspex design of molung (GT, SD)

    Space Hospital
Conical medical facility close to Space Headquarters in New York (SS, HI, SF, HM, DS)

    Space Liner
Large, sleek winged ship that journeys between Earth and Mars. On one return trip from a space conference, six top scientists are abducted from one by vengeful lost astronaut John Magnum (TVC03)

    Space Patrol
A division of the United Galactic Organisation. Publicity for the series refers to ‘Space Patrol’ as ‘the policemen of space’ and it is also refered to in the series (TS) though Raeburn seemingly contradicts this on occasions (TF, SF). It may be he is refering to Space Patrol having jurisdiction in space (II) but not on actual planets, except under certain circumstances where it is connected (UA). Part of their role would appear to be exploration (PL) but again Raeburn contradicts this (WJ) which may indicate an extremely fluid policy for some matters but not in others. They are quite distinct from the United Galactic Forces/Army (SJ), even though both use military ranks. There would appear to be regional (or planetary) divisions, with another Space Headquarters at Cresta on Venus (SF) and a 'Mars Space Patrol' referred to (TVC03).

    Space Pirates
Raiders of cargo in the solar system for some two years before it was discovered that the Venusian industrialist Miga was behind the acts (UA).

    Space Police
Organisation mooted by Colonel Raeburn as handling crime solving, such as the capture of forgers (TF). The leader of the crooks who steal a shipment of gold bullion also refer to 'space police' but they may be referring to Space Patrol (TVC02)

    Space Rations
Standard food on Galaspheres and possibly other spaceships (WA, MTS, EVT).

    Space Suit - see Uniform

    Space Survey
Department of Space Patrol presumably responsible for study of astronomical data. Raeburn requests from them a trajectory prediction of the asteroid that is knocked out of orbit (WA) and a display of the cloud’s position relative to Earth and the sun from them, to explain Dart’s mission to him (CD).

    Special Courier (left)
Type 2 robot used to relay communications at Space Headquarters when monitors do not respond (WJ).

    Spectrons
Tiny wizened inhabitants of the planet Spectros, and at war with the Noxids. Galasphere 347 is opened fire upon by a Spectron ship, mistakenly believing it to be a new Noxid design. (AN01).

    Spectros
Planet at war with the alien Noxids (AN01).

    Spring Flowering
The leaves given by the Saturnians are all that came from the Spring Flowering of their trees and there will be no more for six months. Presumably this is a relative translation of their seasons and time, as a Saturnian Year would be equal to 29 Earth years (MTS).

    Spirigum Spider
Large arachnid native to areas of Venus but rarely seen by 2100. They build near indestructible webs, the substance of which can only be shattered by extreme cold. In a powdered form, however, the web becomes a very effective truth drug (SF)

    'Strange Planet' (right)
Uncharted and unnamed world beyond the orbit of Mars, used as a hideaway by crooks who had stoled gold bullion. It is inhabited by a wide variety of flora and fauna (TVC02).

    Suction Tube
Used by Galasphere 347 to take samples of water in order to determine the rapid mutation of the Tula Fish (HF).

    Suffragette
Marla, when freed from Tyro’s influence, threatens to return to Neptune and start a suffragette movement. It is unclear though, whether the Neptunians actually have two sexes in the first place to make this a feasible proposition. (PT)

    Sun
Star at the centre of our solar system. Freighters loaded with Beryllium can cause massive explosions on its surface, increasing the heat radiation and causing climatic changes on the inner planets such as Venus, Earth and Mars at least (ES). When a Neptunian energy field causes the temperature on Earth to rise, Raeburn gets the Moon Observatory to check the Sun for similar disturbances again (FX).

    ‘Sun Men’
The Lumina term for inhabitants of our solar system, and initially the crew of Galasphere 347 (PL).

    Sunspots
Dark areas on the surface of the Sun, the appearance of which can cause an increase of solar radiation, disrupting communications including Sonar Beam (EVT).

    Super Brain (left)
Vast artificial biological intelligence, created by the self sufficient computers on the planet Delta. 100 times larger than a normal brain, it turned malevolent and suppressed the people of Delta, building itself an underground bunker guarded by robots. Yria returned to Delta to find it in control and came back to Earth to ask Colonel Raeburn and the crew of Galasphere 347 for help. It is distracted by ultrasonics long enough for the Deltans to blow it up (DS).

    Super Ultrasonics
100 times faster than normal ultrasonics, and used for geological and prospecting purposes. Dart also finds a medical use for them, in curing Cassie when a matter teleportation test goes wrong (DS).

    A

    Aba Bird
Rare, flightless bird from the area of Mars, resembling a two legged rhinocerous with a single white eye. Only twenty are known to exist in the year 2100 and they are a protected species. They lay three eggs a year - one ovoid that contains its young and two square ones that contain additional food for it when it hatches. They can be very protective and ferocious protecting their eggs, goring people with their tusk. The protein from the square eggs was used to synthesise a cure for the condition known as 'the floats'. They were apparently tame once and, if tickled, can be calmed down (HI). The eggs can also counteract the rapid hair growth caused by fruit from the Toohera Jungle (HM).

    Action Call
Order given by General Smith in emergencies, such as the rocket launch against Dr Duncan on Ganymede (ES).

    Aeronautics Museum
Complex which stores and maintains examples of obselete air and space vehicles. They still have a fully working 1980s rocket that is used to repel an Neptunian attempt to get Earth slaves (FX).

    Alpha Centauri
Star system over four light years away, containing the planet Delta and home to Yria. It would take a Galasphere about 3000 years to travel the distance but with a Delta Unit built by Yria, the journey only takes about four months (MS, DS).

    Antibiotic
The Saturnian plants are described as having an antibiotic effect on the fungus that is destroying crops (MTS).

    Anti-plastifoam Gun
Never seen and only refered to once, it would suggest a weapon or device that projects a solvent capable of dissolving plastifoam (MTS).

    Anti-Dazzle Glasses
Husky's eye-saving solution to Professor Haggarty's hideously colourful jersey! (TVC05).

    Anti-Missiles
Defensive interceptor projectiles alledgedly carried by Galaspheres but never seen in use (TS).

    Ants
Haggarty is trying develop a machine to translate the language of ants. We never discover whether it works but an offshoot of its development is the transmission of heat via radio waves (FM).

    Arizona Desert
Where Colonel Raeburn orders Galasphere 347 to land, to confine a battle area when blue aliens declare war on Earth (TVC05).

    Artificial Planet
Large world made by the Neptunians in an attempt to cause a collision between Earth, Mars and Venus and once again blackmail the UGO into sending human slaves to their planet (DW). Vast deserted worldship of unknown origin on a collision course with Earth until the crew of Galasphere 347 divert it (left). The fate of the inhabitants is unknown but may be linked to a strange energy on the ship that disintegrates lifeforms (AN02)

    Asteroids
Belt of minor planets the majority of which are found between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. Pallas is located in the main belt (SS), while others wander the solar system (UA)

    Astral Projection
The ability to send ones mind outside the body in spirit form. The Duo plant creatures have a similar ability, with their 'spirits' being able to enter other species and control their will. The 'spirits' are just visible and refered to as smoke-like, and if they are destroyed - by electricity, for example - the body of the Duo dies and dissolves (II). The 'spirits' are also able to observe and act as spies, reporting back when the 'spirit' returns to its body (JW).

    Atlantic Sea Farm
Subaquatic agricultural colony, presumably just off the east coast of America. It is overseen by Jim Barratt and an army of some five thousand robots (RR, MTS, PT, JW)

    Atmosphere
Thin envelope of gases surrounding most planets. The atmosphere of Earth is oxygen (about 20%) and nitrogen (about 80%), and it can be assumed that the atmospheres of Mars and Venus are similar enough to Earth for it not to cause breathing problems between the three major races. Venus has a higher oxygen content (GS) while Mars may have some areas where it is necessary to wear a molung (HM). The atmospheres of Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus are poisonous to humans, making molungs a necessity when outside, but the Saturnian caves are 'air-conditioned' and confortable for humans (RS, MTS). The atmospheres of Mercury (FM) and Pluto (BS) are too thin to breathe and molungs or space helmets are required. The same applies to the moons of the planets, as none have atmospheres (MM, GT, ES, SD, WB), with the possible exception of Callisto (TS). Earth-like atmospheres can also be found outside the solar system, with a tenth planet beyond the orbit of Pluto having a breathable atmosphere (NP). The atmosphere of the planet Delta in the Alpha Centauri system is also Earth-like. The atmosphere of planet Lumen in the Sirius system lacks oxygen (PL), while that of Humida is believed to be poisonous but apparently has life preserving properties (TVC03)

    Atom(ising) Gun
Weapon on board Galasphere 347 used to divert the whirlwind from its collision with Earth (DW). Fendoe has an 'atomising gun' on a tank-like vehicle at the mining base on the asteroid Omega (TVC04)

(N.B.. The Solarscope ship of Paul Starr is also armed with a weapon called the Atom Gun, which actually causes a powerful atomic explosion.)

    Auntie Min
Relative of Professor Haggarty, with a penchant for gifts of gaudy coloured knitwear (TVC05).

    Automatic Course Control
As the name implies, a system for automatically correcting the course of Galaspheres, while the crew are in the Freezer Cabin.

    Automatic Pilot
Used to control the lead freighter of convoys (ES).

    Automatic Time Control
System on Galaspheres that controls the length of time the crew are in the Freezer Cabin. It can be overridden or countermanded by the Zergon Ray.

    Azsom
Tara's aide at his palace on Callisto (TS)

    B

    Bandits
Raiders of unknown origin who periodically terrorise the inhabitants of the tiny world of Larta (TVC11).

    Barking Disease
Saturnian term for a cold, and the sneezing it causes. It proves fatal to Saturnians if untreated (MTS).

    Barratt, Jim (right)
Head of the Underwater Sea Farm, where a percentage of Earth's crops are grown by robots (RR, MTS, JW).

    Bats
Small flying mammals native to Earth, often alluded to when the ultrasonic communication of the Uranian Duo plants is discussed (DP, EVT). Large bat-like creatures inhabit the planet Humida, and are capable of flying for short periods in space (TVC03)

    Berridge
Criminal who, with two accomplices, attempt to blackmail Earth by using a laser to target cities on Earth. He and his men are presumably killed when the beam is reflected back at their hidden base on the Moon (MM).

    Beryllium
Element which, when introduced to the surface of the Sun, causes vast explosions and climatic changes on Venus and Mars. It has other applications, one would hope, as a convoy of forty freighters full of the stuff was on its way to Pluto before being hi-jacked by Doctor Duncan. Unless the Martians there were hoping to pull a similar stunt in an attempt to warm their colony, that is (ES).

    Betelguese
Star system 190 light years away from Earth. It is home to a race of benign, bell shaped creatures (TB).

    Betelguesians
Bell shaped aliens of indeterminate nature from a planet in the Betelguese system. They are refered to as being neither flesh & blood, metal or plastic, suggesting they are closest to plants in our terms or wholly alien. They have a single extendable leg and another extendable antennae which can transfer their life energies (left) or, in the case of cheeky Gabblerdictums, used to meter out physical punishment! Betelguesians can decode alien languages in their head in a very short space of time, and are extremely moral with 'Mr Bell' willing to sacrifice his life energies to sustain Dart during a rescue attempt (TB).

    Betelguesian Mothership
Slender craft with projecting handles, it is parked in orbit close to Neptune while scout ships were despatched to other solar planets (TB)

    Betelguesian Scoutship
Never seen but presumably fairly small, it ferries 'Mr Bell' to Earth from the Mothership near Neptune and is blasted down accidentally by Colonel Raeburn while on a shooting trip with Haggerty (TB)

    Biological Department
Section of the UGO Scientific Headquarters, which Professor Haggarty wants to examine the planet from Uranus (DP)

    Bird Song Translating Machine
Device invented by Professor Haggarty to understand the language of birds. It is used to teach Gabbler to speak English and alluded to many times, usually with regret (SN)

    Birdbrains
What Larry Dart thinks Husky and Gabbler also have in common, besides an owner and pet relationship (SN)

    Blackpool
Large northern English town, known for its entertainment and tourist trades during the 20th and 21st centuries, and presumably still in existence in 2100 (MS)

    'Blue Creatures' (right)
Small inhabitants of a newly discovered world on which the only colour known is blue. They are wary of planet to planet salesmen and believe the crew of Galasphere 347 to be them. When warning them off leads to a misunderstanding, they declare war on Earth, only to be shocked into retreat by the hideously bright colours of Haggarty's bright jersey. A likely story! (TVC05)

    'Blue Planet'
Newly discovered world which on exploration by Galasphere 347 was found to coloured only in blue - an effect of atmospheric light absorbtion. A misunderstanding with the creatures who inhabited it nearly led to a war which was avoided by Professor Haggarty's brightly coloured jersey... or so he would have us believe! (TVC05)

    Blister Plants
Form of flora on the planet Lumen in the Sirius star system. The large 'blisters' contain oxygen which is lethal to the native crystalline Lumina but which fortunately sustain Dart when his backpack is damaged. Dart also brings some seeds and crystalline soil from Lumen and is able to glow a blister plant on Galasphere 347 by exposing it to light. Their usage in providing oxygen in space travel is incalculable (PL)

    Bloxine Fuel
Propellant of the Betelguesian spacecraft (TB)

    Boost Speed
Ability to increase meson power on Galaspheres, allowing them to travel in the region of a million miles per hour. It is considered dangerous and only used in emergencies (TS, TB). Freighters and colony ships have a similar capability, presumably with speeds equivilant to a Galasphere (SN).

    Boots, Spiked
The special boots worn by the crew of Galasphere 347 on Mercury have spikes on the underside. These prevent the boots from coming into contact with the boiling surface and burning (FM).

    Borra, Professor
Clever, absent-minded and regrettably late inventor of the mechanical eye intended to protect the Venusian capitol Cresta from alien attack by destroying any craft not constructed of metals found on Venus, Earth and Mars. He was, according to the President of Venus, the most gifted scientist on Venus (EVT) but forgot Galaspheres were constructed of Plutonite, from Pluto, and the destruction of the approaching Galasphere 347 was only just averted. It would be amusing, though disrespectful of the dead, to suggest the hoverjet he was riding to inspect and adjust the Eye afterwards was also constructed of Plutonite and the cause of his death - but we just don't know... (EV)

    Borse, Doctor
Scientist aiding the renegade Tirig and developer of the nerve gas used to blackmail Mars (SD).

    Brig
Member of Marog's gang, with an eyepatch and brisque attitude (WB).

    Brog, Commander (far right)
Level-headed leader of the Martian mining colonists on Pluto (BS, FM).

    Brog's Aide (right)
Martian assistant on the Mining Colony on Pluto. He has only been there a short while and has to have the function of the heat transmission towers explained to him (BS).

    Brown, Doctor
Scientist at the Jupiter Scientific Headquarters (SS, TB, SG), who discovers water from a newly discovered lake causes inanimate objects to move. He is abducted by his own spacesuit when the wateris accidently spilt on him and has to be rescued by Larry Dart and Husky (WJ)

    'Busy Lizzie'
Type 2 robot modified by Haggerty to recieve orders by thought from Colonel Raeburn. It has striped patterns on its body with an 'R' on its chest (presumably for Raeburn). The first order Raeburn gives is for it to water his flowers, but while on the Galasphere for tests Lizzie he tries to kiss Husky. Quite what Raeburn was thinking is anyone's guess! Affected by Raeburn's delirium while suffering from a virus, Lizzie distracts the crew of Galasphere 347 while investigating a new planet occupied by the Neptunians, though was able to redeem herself by rescuing them once Raeburn had recovered (TR).

    Buzzer
The vacuum doors on Galaspheres apparently have a calling device for when crewmembers want to get back in! (DP, SW)

    C

    Callisto
Moon of Jupiter and home to the art treasure thief Tara. The flight time from Earth is 21 days (TS).

    Carbon Dioxide
Gas that is purportedly vital to the Saturnians, instead of oxygen (GS)

    Cassiopeia Haggarty
Petite, dark haired daughter of Professor Haggarty, who prefers to be known as Cassie. She helps out in his laboratory at the Scientific Research Building at Space Headquarters and would also appear to look after him at home.

    'Cat'
Small crystalline lifeform given to Larry Dart by the Lumina. It purrs and is refered to as a cat but it starts to fade not long after entering the Galasphere and is dead upon arrival on Earth, leaving only dark fibrous matter. Considering how much emphasis was put on how deadly oxygen is to the Lumina, one would assume that the crew of Galasphere 347 would have put two and two together but sadly for the late 'cat', it was not to be... (PL)

    Cattle
The drought situation on Mars is so bad that cattle have had to slaughtered (BS).

    Central Control
Division of Space Patrol at Space Headquarters that deals with pre-launch checks on Galaspheres. This would appear to be the job of the secretary of the Colonel in charge.

    Chair
Punishment of the alien space raider Voltek, into which he was strapped forever unless someone agreed to take his place (TVC10).

    Charlie
Type One Robot foreman at Jim Barratt's undersea farm (RR, MTS).

    Cloning
Never mentioned per se in the series but the plethera of reoccuring faces brings one to wonder if it isn't common or even rampant by 2100 !

    Cloud
Vast belt of electronically charged Zenton particles, three hundred and fifty thousand miles above the Earth, placed to deflect the solar heat and blackmail Raeburn into providing Neptune with slaves (CD).

    Cloud Dispersal
By 2100, weather control has been established and is strictly controlled (CD).

    Cloud Dispersal Officer
In charge of Weather Control, in the New York area at least (CD).

    Coal
Compressed carbon formed from ancient animal and plant life. The fact there is carbon coal on Pluto indicates the planet may once have supported life millions of years ago (BS).

    Code
To have been allocated to all metals made on Earth, Venus and Mars to prevent them from being destroyed by the Eye invented by Professor Borra (EV).

    Colony
Martian settlement on the planet Pluto, refered to on several occasions though we only see the mining complex (SN, BS, FM). There are also colonists on Ganymede (ES)

    Colony Ship
Tapered end cigar shaped ship, used to transfer a thousand colonists to Pluto (SN). It is similar in shape and size to a freighter, and may be converted from one (VV).

    Comet
One knocks an asteroid out of orbit on a collision course for the Martian capitol of Wotan (WA). Another is responsible for reviving the crew of Galasphere 347 on the limits of the Solar System when it nearly collides with the ship (NP).

    Common Cold
Curable by the year 2100 by an inhalant of unspecified nature and origin. It is still prevailent though, and nearly becomes an epidemic on Saturn where it is fatal if untreated (MTS).

Communications Tower - see Radio Tower

    Computer Centre
Refered to many times, and implied that there is at least one each on Earth (MM), Mars (WA) and Venus (NP).

    Contamination Control
Used by Galasphere crews, and presumably at other points where interplanetary contact is possible, to prevent germs or infections from being passed from planet to planet. It may use ultraviolet light although this is never directly stated. It is presumably powerful enough to prevent the common cold (MTS)

    Coney Island
Large amusement park near New York of the 20th and 21st centuries, and presumably still in existence in 2100 (MS)

    Control Tower
Tower close to Space Headquarters in New York that bears more than a passing resemblance to the Post Office Tower (now Telecom Tower) of the late 20th and early 21st century, which monitors space flight, presumably in conjunction with Space Headquarters. At other times it seems to be refered to as the Radio or Communications Tower.

    Coryza
Old fashioned term for the common head cold but seemingly back in popular usage by 2100. It can be cured by an inhalant (MTS).

    Cosmic Radiation
Responsible for mutating the Tula Fish on Venus (HF) and possibly the large scale of life on Planet Ten (NP).

    Cosmonauts
Generally what the men of the Space Patrol are referred to as (EVT)..

    Crackle
What the Gabblerdictum birds refer to paper money as (TF)..

    Cresta
Capitol city of Venus, ringed by a range of dormant volcanoes, on the east coast of the Magda Ocean (VV, HF, ES, EV, SF).

    D

    ‘Danger Speed’
Term by which Galasphere crews refer to ‘boost speed’, and with good reason (TB)..

    Danta
Asteroid on which the Sonar Beam Transmitter for Venus is based, twelve days and three hours from Earth. It is damaged by interstellar debris from an ancient exploded star and has to be repaired by the crew of Galasphere 347. (TVC01).

    Dara
Aide to the President of Venus (ES).

    Dart, Captain Larry (left)
Over the duration of the series, we learn very little about Larry Dart. He would appear to be in his thirties and a veteran of Space Patrol and the UGO. Sporting 'Viking' blond hair and a goatee beard with blue eyes (EVT), he is a consummate professional. We learn little of his private life, assuming he has one after the long periods of time spent in space, or family. When he was seven, he used to go 'bird nesting' for eggs (HI). He looks forward to leave but on more than one occasion seems restless and in need of something to do, whether it be fishing (RR, TVC02), investigating a mystery on Mars (TF) or rock climbing on the Moon (DS). This zeal for action sometimes makes him volunteer for the most dangerous missions (EV), something Colonel Raeburn is aware of but rarely takes advantage of (WA)

    Dawlish
Owner of a Lunalt Mining Complex on the Moon who discovered the Termoids and was blackmailed into smuggling them to Earth (TVC09)..

    Dectium
Rare metal once found on Earth and used in atomic reactors but when supplies were used up, a source was found on the asteroid Omega. It is also found in a liquid form on the asteroid, and these can form geysers on the surface (TVC04)..

    Deelya
The Dell capitol on Northern Jupiter (SW)

    Deep Water Reservoirs
A suggestion by Marla in response to the rapid temperature rises caused by Dr Duncan, but it would take too long to implement before the heat became critical (ES)

    Defence Ships (right)
Glimpsed rising from Earth to counter John Magnum's attack with giant alien bats, these are slender white, winged ships with red livery that belong the Space Army (TVC03)

    Dells
Tall emaciated aliens who occupy Northern Jupiter. Despite their fragile appearance they are immensely strong and war-like, especially their leader, and have been in conflict with the planet's other race, the Miocells, for years (SW)..

    Delta
Habitable Earth-like planet of the star system Alpha Centauri and home to Yria (MS, DS)..

    Delta Power Unit
Device constructed by Yria and installed in the meson power unit of Galasphere 347 to enable it to travel faster than light (MS, DS). The jouney to Alpha Centauri is made in about four months, which would mean a velocity in excess of twelve times the speed of light.

    Deltees (left)
Inhabitants of the planet Delta in the Alpha Centauri star system, or at least that is what Professor Zeffer dubs them. Pulsating, floating bodies with a banded head and a single glowing eye, they can teleport over vast distances and communicate telepathically (MS). The Deltees develop computers so advanced they can create living matter but as they did not want to increase the population a giant brain was made. This unfortunately turned malevolant and had to be destroyed (DS)

    Dictum Forest
Forest on Mars which the Gabblerdictum came from (TF, HI, HM), and also home to the Aba bird (HI, HM) and the Glook (TF). It is a Wildlife Preserve and weapons are not permitted on the territory (TF)

    Dictum Tree
Large growths on Mars, the leaves of which form the favorite food of Gabblerdictum birds, including Gabbler (TF)

    Duncan, Doctor
Scientist who used to used to work for Professor Haggarty but was fired for trying to steal an invention. He tries to extort resources from Venus and Earth by causing explosions on the Sun which raise the temperature on the inner planets to unbearable levels (ES)..

    Duos
Indigenous, intelligent and belligerent plant life from the planet Uranus. One small specimen was brought back by an expedition was found to be able to walk and communicate ultrasonically. This resulted in Galasphere 347 being despatched to make contact when it was theorised the small plant might only be ‘a child’. The plants reacted hostilely to the visit but ultrasonic recordings were made in an attempt at future communication (DP). Before this was possible the plants, who refered to themselves as Duos, launched a subversive invasion plan by taking over the minds of key members of Space Headquarters who would allow a fleet of craft to land unopposed (II). When this was defeated, a further more direct attempt was made by sending radio waves to cause localised earthquakes on Earth. This, too, was repelled and the feedback destroyed the Duo base (JW). Despite the high regard for life - alien or otherwise - Space Patrol usually has, the Duos seem to be the only species to be subject to a ‘destroy on sight’ policy. When the Duo ship is discovered after their first invasion attempt, it is blown out of the sky without so much as a by your leave (II). The same punishment is metered out to a second ship despatched to spy on Space Headquarters (JW).

    Dynamite
Still used as an explosive in 2100 (WA, WB)

    [/url]E

    Earrings
Telepathy protecting fashion accessory, made from the filaments of Haggarty’s brain wave protectors (PT).

    Earth
Third planet from the Sun in our solar system and home to the human race. Little is known of Earth in 2100 but there appear to be no wars even though military organisations are evident to overcome threats from hostile aliens or renegade movements within the UGO (MM, SD). There are still individual nations and countries, such as Asia and France (MTS, TS). There is strict weather control (CD) and a population explosion means that farming for food supplies is now on the ocean floors by robots (RR, MTS, PT, JW).

    Eggs
Professor Haggarty has been trying to get hens to lay square eggs, which are easier to pack, without considering the consequences for the poor hens in trying to lay them. When he eventually succeeds though the eggs have no yoke! It is interesting to speculate whether the idea was inspired by the eggs of the Aba bird (HI, HM). A large egg containing a brilliant luminescent fluid that could be used to light Martian homes and save energy is found on Titan but found to be the offspring of strange creatures Slim dubs ‘humming dogs’. What happens to them is never revealed (GT)..

    Elektran
Electronic Translator, a large disc like device worn on the chest of members of Space Patrol and scientific expeditions to other planets, which automatically translates the various languages into your own tongue. Set the dial ('V' for Venus, 'M' for Mars, 'J' for Jovian) and the language is broken down into microdots. These dots are then imprinted onto a mechanised roller giving a vocabulary of a thousand words - more than enough for comprehension (SJ, SS, WJ). The ultrasonic language of the plant life forms of Uranus is recorded during a visit there (DP) but never seems to be translated. Saturnian language is recorded, translated and added to the Electran after the first visit by Larry Dart (RS, MTS, GS).

    Electric Charge
Powerful weapon used by alien raider Voltek to disable ships and steal their cargo (TVC10)..

    Electric Discharge Guns
Devices used to counteract the effects of the 'walking water' from Jupiter (WJ)..

    Electromagnetic Field
Supposedly a by-product of the Galasphere’s interplanetary overdrive, the flickering bubble of energy that surrounds it in flight. It can be switched on or off, but when on will block the Galasphere’s own scanners and communications. It can also block telepathic influence, act as a defence against missiles and be expanded to encompass other ships, if need be (SN, TR)..

    Energy
Strange orange light that hunts down and disintegrates life forms on a vast artificial worldship encountered by Galasphere 347. It destroys one of the wild quadrapeds, allowing enough time for Dart, Slim and Haggarty to escape, and may have been the cause of the disappearance of the occupants (AN02)

    Exclaimations
Language is very polite and expletive free in 2100 but occasionally characters have cause to exclaim their surprise or disbelief. Phrases like “Space Help Us!” (Brog - BS), “Space Around Me!” (Raeburn - GT) and "Space Race!" (Raeburn - TB) seem the favourites, though the Irish Professor Haggarty uses his own particular brand of native phrases such as "Bejabbers!" and "Shivering Shamrocks!"

    Explosives
Dynamite is still widely used in 2100 (WA, HF) although nuclear devices still exist (HF, ES). All Galaspheres reputedly carry a small supply of explosives, according to Colonel Raeburn (ES). The Deltees of Alpha Centauri have an similar explosive they call tynite (DS)

    Eye
Defensive device invented by Venusian scientist Borra. It can detect any craft not made of metals from Venus, Earth and Mars and destroy them. Regretably Borra forgets that Galaspheres are made from Plutonite, from Pluto, and the destruction of Galasphere 347 is only just averted during a test. Borra is killed under unusual circumstances travelling to adjust the Eye, and when it prevents anything from approaching it has to be destroyed (EV).
    F

Faster Than Light Travel - see Delta Power Unit and Ruminov Metal.

    Fendoe, Doctor (left)
Boss of the Dectium mines on asteroid Omega, who attempts to blackmail Earth into paying whatever price he wants for the rare metal (TVC04).

    Fishing
Still in evidence on Venus, though the evolving Tula Fish took umbrage to the business (HF). It is still a relaxing recreational, and Marla suggests it as a break for Colonel Raeburn (DW). It is also a favourite holiday pasttime of Larry Dart (WA, RR) though it does occasioally get him into trouble... (TVC01, TVC02)

    Floats, The
Muscular wasting condition, caused by continual living in low or zero gravity environments such the Moon or artificial satellites. The muscles atrophy to such a degree that the body shuts down, killing a person. It is cured by a protein, or synthesised version of it, found in the square eggs of the Aba Bird from Mars (HI).

    Flora
World which is home to advanced and potentially hostile plant life and where contact with two Galaspheres had been lost. It is discovered the plants had enslaved the native humanoids and also the Galasphere crews (TVC08).

    Flying Saucer
Getaway craft used by a gang of crooks to leave Earth with stolen gold bullion (TVC02).

    Fowler, Captain
Space Patrol officer in overall charge of a two Galasphere mission to newly discovered planet M17. He is court-martialed when his second-in-command Lieutenant Roget lands his Galasphere despite there scenes of strange alien monsters there (HS01).

    Franc
Unit of currency on both Venus (UA) and Mars (SF).

    Freezer Unit (right)
All Galaspheres have freezer units, to send the crew into hibernation for the long transit times involved in traversing the solar system. There is also a freezer unit in the Space Headquarters hospital (SS). Dart sometimes refers to the Galasphere unit as ‘the freezer locker’ (UA, WB)..

    Freezer Unit, Portable
Sealed container resembling a clear sleeping bag, used to transport Husky to Professor Zeffer’s observatory on Mars in an attempt to cure him of his invisible condition (HI).

    Freighter
    See Husky's Technical Manual: Freighters

    Freighter Convoy
A convoy of forty freighters under robot control that are hijacked by Doctor Duncan. The robots are controled from the lead freighter, identified by being striped apparently (ES).

    Freightship 182
Freighter denied the latest shipment of the rare metal Dectium from the asteroid Omega (TVC04).

    Fungus
Plant fungus with incredibly infectious qualities that threatens Earth with famine, spreading across Asia, India, Borneo and half the Caribbean as well as the underwater sea farms. It appears as large blisters but can be stopped and cured by contact with plants from Saturn (MTS).. Dart believes an area of the Dictum Forset on Mars has been affected by a fungus, turning it to desert (TF). A real fungus does strike Mars later, which is dealt with by a powerful fungicide dispersed over the planet by Galasphere 347 (DW). A rock found on asteroid Danta turns out to be an oxygen absorbing fungus, which grows to a vast size when brought to Earth (TVC01)

    G

    Gabbler, The (left)
A Martian parrot, though walking upright and as tall as a small child. Husky brings one to Earth as a pet and Professor Haggarty teaches it to speak English through his birdsong translator (SN), after which the problem is getting him to stop talking! Gabbler has mauve feathers (EVT) though other Gabblerdictums may be coloured differently.

    Gabbladictum
Species of large Martian bird, and refered to as their equivilant of a parrot in that it mimics speech. They can fly in the lower gravity of their native Mars (TF, HM) . Their favourite food is the leaves of the Dictum Tree, and only Gabbladictums have the strength and guile to deal with the large insectoid Glooks that live in the Dictum Forset (TF).

    Galactic Control
Division of Space Patrol that monitors interplanetary travel, probably based in the Control Tower (SN)..

    Galactic Forces, The
Presumably another term for the United Galactic Army (SJ)..

    Galactic Union, The
Possibly another term for the United Galactic Organisation (TVC11)..

    Galasphere 024
Replacement Galasphere used by Larry Dart and the crew of Galasphere 347 in an emergency situation, when their own would not have been rehabiitated in time (SJ)

    Galasphere 103
Galasphere despatched by Space Headquarters to divert the freighter convoy back to Ganymede (ES)..

    Galasphere 109
Galasphere despatched to Jupiter to collect the Lumi Pebbles that could cure Dart and Slim from shrinking (SG).

    Galasphere 185
Galasphere ordered to return to Earth by Robot Control during the Duo invasion (II).

    Galasphere 347 (right)
The main Galasphere used by Captain Larry Dart and his crew. It literally collapses after the return journey at faster than light speeds from the planet Delta in the star system Alpha Centauri (MS), though is presumably rebuilt or replaced with another Galasphere with the same number.

    Galasphere 774
One of two Galaspheres sent to explore planet M17, and commanded by Lieutenant Roget (HS01).

    Galasphere 971
Galasphere in the vicinity of Mars that gives a bearing on the escaping criminal saucer (TVC02).

    Galaspheres
The main ships of the Space Patrol, each crewed by an Earthman, a Martian, a Venusian and a robot. On Galasphere 347, the Earthman is the Captain but it is not known if this is the arrangement for all. The appearance of a Galasphere is a thick metallic ring encircling a cylindrical core and linked by three tubes - almost akin to a child’s spinning top. They have been in use for at least twenty years - most probably longer - when one was lost and was later discovered to have landed on a tenth planet beyond the orbit of Pluto (NP).

An accurate of a Galasphere is difficult to determine, as even the scale and size is questionable when seen in relation to its crew. Entry is usually via the vacuum door (or doors - it is unclear whether there is more than one) in the ring. Given the size of a door on the outer ring, which is used by the docking facility at Space Headquarters, the ship could be about 60 feet (18 metres) high with a ring diameter of about 65 feet (20 metres) but this would make it rather small especially when seen in relation to a colony ship supposedly housing 1000 people (SN). Even the size of the control room and other areas of the Galasphere seem incongruous with its external size.

Each Galasphere houses a control room, a freezer unit for hibernation on long voyages (we speculate, from the size and shape, that this may occupy one of the ‘spokes’ between the core and ring), a meson unit (situated at the top of the core, though a rotating disc that is part of the mechanism is in the ring near the vacuum door (HM)) which provides the power for the three drives: primary, orbital and interplanetary overdrive - and several hover jets. Despite patrols through the solar system, Galaspheres do not have the means to handle situations on every planet and require specialised equipment (SJ). This again may be a factor that indicates the Galaspheres are not that large. They are capable of atmospheric flight (NP, EV), as well as travelling underwater (HF, JW).

    Gallia
Slim’s uncle on Venus. He was a member of the ruling council but was expelled for speaking against the President, believing Venus should be the superior planet in the Unitd Galactic Organisation. He threatens to take power and nearly succeeds using a powder that causes temporary paralysis. His plan is discovered by Slim and thwarted by the crew of Galasphere 347 (VV).

    Gamma Ray Gun
Also refered to as just Gamma Guns. These seem to be the main weapons of Space Patrol. They may have different settings, emitting a form of visible electrical discharge (SS, HF) or an explosive projectile effect (MS). They can also be used for drilling (WA, BS).

    Ganymede
Satellite of Jupiter and location of a Research Centre for Space Medicine. The Director was a Venusian but he is superceded, perhaps forcibly, by Doctor Duncan (ES)

    Gas
A nerve gas is used by Tyrig to try and over throw power (SD). A strange gas like mist also causes Slim and Dart to shrink when exposed to it (SG).

    Giant
Oversized inhabitant of a tenth planet beyond the orbit of Pluto. The large size of all animal and plant life is attributed to cosmic radiation (NP).

    Giants
Race of alien scientists who collect samples from other planets and 'steal' an entire power station - plus terrified occupants! - until Larry Dart is bravely able to show them the error of their ways (TVC07).

    Glooks (right)
Large, quadruped insects from the Dictum Forest on Mars. They have three eyes, interspaced with three horns or feelers, and a vicious possibly deadly bite. They find forged bank notes quite useful in the construction of their nests. Only Gabblerdictum birds are capable of overcoming them without the use of a weapon (TF).

    Gold
Bullion stolen from the UGO by space pirates. You can’t mistake the stuff, as it conveniently has ‘UGO Gold’ written in large letters in each ingot, which is quite handy when trying to incriminate the culprits. (UA)

    Gold Mines
The Venusian Tara controls all the gold mines on Callisto, and inspects them every day (TS)

    Golf
Apparent still considered a relaxing pasttime in 2100, though not necessarily by Larry Dart (RR)

    Gravity Repulsion Field
Mentioned several times before its usage is explained by its absense. Old fashioned rockets did not have gravity repulsion, making take off uncomfortable, so it can be assumed it reduces g-forces during acceleration (FX).

    Gromaclom
    Gabblerdictumese for pencil (SN).
    H

    Haggarty, Professor Aloysius O’Brien O’Rourke
Irish scientist who works at the Scientific Headquarters of the UGO. By turns genius and madman (according to others) Haggarty is an inventor who is usually developing various devices or processes for use in space. He has a daughter, Cassie, who lives with him and seemingly looks after him so we have to presume Mrs Haggarty is no longer around. When not involved in UGO matters, his personal bugbear is his own hair loss and trying to invent a means to prevent it. Even that turns out to have a use, when the electronic hair restorer leads to a solution to an alien invasion (II). He has a niece and nephew, which suggests he has a married brother or sister, who occasionally visit =, and also an Aunt Min, who knits him a hideiously coloured cardigan! (TVC05)

    Hair Restoring Machine
Transparent cabinet and unit in one corner of Professor Haggarty's laboratory, that he uses to try and restore his thinning hair. It also has the useful property of shielding against Duo mind control (II, HM).

    ‘Hairy Men’ (right)
Large, primitive Martians, some three thousand of which still occupy the Toohera region of Mars. (HM)

    Holy Tree of Saturn
Religious icon of the Saturnians, purportedly sporting purple leaves. Larry Dart inadvertantly breaks a law when he innocently takes some of these leaves from it on mankind's first contact with the planet, and narrowly avoids an interplanetary incident (RS). Dart is allowed to keep the leaves, which is fortuitous as they turn out to be the cure for a virilent fungus attacking Earth's crops (MTS)

    Hover Jets
See Husky's Technical Manual: Hover Jets

    Humida
The 'poisoned planet', some twenty-eight days from Earth. The atmosphere, however, is not as poisonous as once supposed and has strange properties such as sustaining and prolonging human life. It is also home to a species of large bat-like creatures (TVC03)

    ‘Humming Dogs’
Strange, oviparous form of life found on Titan, one of the moons of Saturn, resembling a cross between a bulbous skittle and (allegedly) a dog in that the head has two eyes, a snout and long ears. They move by hovering and gliding and seem perfectedly adapted to life in space and low gravity. It is not known if they are native to Titan, Saturn or from elsewhere entirely. Their scarcity on Titan may imply the latter (GT)

    Husky
Galasphere 347’s resident engineer and walking stomach, Husky has large blue eyes and a head of short brown, spiky hair. Possibly in his late twenties, though as Martian years are longer that would make him at least as old as Larry Dart, Husky is well built and the tallest of the crew being seven feet tall (EVT). It is never revealed whether Husky is his real name or a nickname derived from his deep, breathy voice.
Fond of Martian sausages in particular and food in general, he has little interests outside his momentous appetite but he seems to hanker after some female company - especially the pretty type - when stricken with a shrinking condition (SS). Whether this hints at loneliness is never expanded upon but he does get a pet in the form of a Martian Gabblerdictum Bird which he brings to Earth where, presumably, Husky lives when on duty.
He is very proud of his Martian heritage, and enjoys returning to Mars for leave, though it would seem he can go on about how great the planet is, to the boredom of certain Irish professors (HS02).

    Interceptor Missiles
    See Husky's Technical Manual: Interceptors

    Interplanetary Overdrive
The main drive used by Galaspheres for interplanetary travel. It may also be refered to as Transfinitive Drive (SJ). The maximum safe speed of Galasphere 347 is 800,000 miles per hour (SN) with the standard speed being 500,000 mph (WA). An emergency speed of 1,000,000 mph is rarely used, as it is dangerous (TB). Tests to bring that up to 2,000,000 mph being carried out (MS). 800,000 mph is consistent with the travel times quoted to most planets though.
Example - Flight time to Saturn (880 million miles from the sun) is 44 days (RS). At 800,000 mph, a Galasphere would travel 19.2 million miles a day and traverse 844.8 million miles in the time given.

    Ion Gun
Means of personal travel in space, comprising of a slender rod that emits a sparkling energy at one end as a form of propulsion. They can also be used in very low gravity environments, such as close to an asteroid (WA, CD, VV, FX).

    Ionospheric Storms
Storms in the ionosphere of Jupiter which hamper communications with other planets. A Galasphere in orbit around the planet can usually send and receive communications to the surface, to check scientific expeditions at regular intivals (SJ). Ionospheric storms prevent Space Headquarters from warning fifteen Galaspheres still in space that the robots have revolted, making it necessary for Raeburn to remain behind until contact can be established (RR).

    Irya
Being from the planet Delta in the star system of Alpha Centauri, over four light years from Earth. A pulsating, floating body with a banded head and a single glowing eye, Irya can teleport over vast distances and communicates telepathically. It aids in the construction of a specialised power unit that enables Galasphere 347 to travel faster than light and make the journey back in only four months (MS). Irya returns for help when its planet comes under the rule of a malignant superbrain (DS).

    J

    Jackson (left)
Bearded Martian Guard on Ganymede whom Slim overpowers and impersonates in order to get the robot beryllium freighters (ES).

    Jano
Tyro’s aide on Neptune (SN, CD, TR, DW, FX), although he is is not named until after returning from Earth on a mission to join the UGO (PT).

    Jet Engine
Some freighters have jet engines for atmospheric flight (VV).

    JHL
United Galactic Force ship initially ordered to investigate Uranus, then told to stay away from the planet by a controlled General Smith (II).

    Joe (right)
Native Jovian who signals Galasphere 024 when it patrols Jupiter to investigate the disappearance of the scientific expedition. He is braver than his fellow Jovians, who have hidden in the swamps in response to the massacre of the Lumis. He develops an unusual attachment to Larry Dart, asking him to stay and make a home with him. Or is it a her? (SJ) He is bitten by a snake and askes for a Lumi Pebble as a cure, which also aids Husky’s recovery from shrinking (SS). Joe seems quite at home with the humans on the Jupiter Scientific HQ, and they accept him quite readily too as a guide (WJ, SG). He is always keen to see Dart, refering to him as ‘his favourite human’, though he seems fond of 'big man with spike hair' - Husky, that is - too (SS, WJ).

    Jones
Technician from Earth who steals away on Galasphere 347 bypassing Contamination Control. He attempts to gain possession of the leaves that will cure a fungus that is destroying Earth crops (MTS).

    Jovians
Bulbous beings with slim, intertwined necks and rotating heads with large eyes and snout. Mall refers to them as stupid but Joe (the only Jovian we see) gives the impression they are more timid in nature, hiding in the swamps when Mall starts killing the Lumis. Their native speech is a high pitched whistling, though Dart refers to it as ‘buzzing’. (SJ) Contact with the Jovians has obviously been established for a while, as the Elektrans have their language programmed in. Although their own planet’s air is poisonous to humans, Martians and Venusians, Jovians also seem to to have no problem breathing the air in the Jupiter Scientific HQ (SJ, SS, WJ, SG).

    Jupiter
Fifth and largest planet in the solar system. Contact with the native Jovians has been established for a while and scientific expeditions have started to explore the planet. Strong ionospheric storms periodically make communications difficult with other planets, requiring Galaspheres to make routine orbital checks of the planet to establish contact. The air and water is poisonous to humans, Martians and Venusians but the Jovians appear to have no problem breathing the air of the expedition bases with any aid. (SJ, SS, WJ, TB). When Earth is threatened with destruction, a planned evacuation is to Jupiter (DW).
It is openly stated that two other warring cultures, the Dells and the Miocells, inhabit the northern hemisphere of the planet in the Secret Weapon storybook. While this is feasible, as Jupiter is still being explored in the series and ionospheric storms may have delayed their discovery, it does seem to contradict what is seen on-screen.

    Jupiter Scientific H.Q.

Permanent base on one area of Jupiter, still largely unexplored in 2100. The first crew there are human but are killed by Mall and his assistant (SJ). A replacement team comprising of Doctors Smith and Brown arrive shortly after (SS) and discover a lake, the water from which causes inanimate objects to move (WJ). The scientific team are also on hand to assist when Dart becomes trapped underground (TB) and when Slim and Dart succumb to a shrinking gas on a later visit (SG).
    K

    K.3
Compound in Galasphere medical kits used as a heavy duty pain killer but which also simulates death (WB).

    Kamakolia Lizard
Creature indiginous to the planet Delta, whose horn is strong enough to act as an alternative to metal (MS)

    Katy
Type 2 robot modified by Haggerty to receive orders by thought wave and act as house keeper while Cassie is on holiday. Men, honestly... ! (TR)

    Kinotine
Compound invented by Dr Mason that has superior insulation properties. A Martian industrialist called Kolig, realising the profit in such a material, kidnapped Dr Mason in order to control its manufacture and distribution (SF)

    Knitting
A hobby, Husky implies, among lonely Martian crewmembers (MM)

    Kolig
Martian industrialist who kidnaps Dr Mason, the inventor of Kinotine, obtains the secret of its production and has the doctor killed. His plan is thwarted when given a newly discovered truth formula and questioned live on Martian television. His initials are W.J. (SF)

    Koreeza
Proper name, apparently, for the common cold germ (MTS)

    L

    Larta (right)
Small world on the edge of the solar system and home to pioneers who left Earth many years ago (TVC11).

    Lartans
Human colonists who inhabit the small world of Larta in a vast domed city. They had been terrorised by space bandits for many years and called upon Earth for help. Driven to desperation, they abduct Professor Haggarty until Galasphere 347 can drive the bandits away or secure their safety (TVC11).

    Laser
Acronym for Light Amplified and Stimulated by Emissions of Radiation. Lasers still seem in use in 2100 although some consider them to have been replaced by Gamma Ray weaponry. Berridge uses a powerful moon-based laser to attack Earth (MM) but no laser has the strength to destroy the Zenton cloud placed by the Neptunians (CD). The Martian colonists on Pluto use them, presumably for mining but also to cut ice for building blocks (BS). A laser is later set up in Moon Crater Four, and used to destroy the threatening artificial planet built by the Neptunians (DW).

    Laser Gun
Armament carried aboard Galaspheres, though from its appearance it may be another or generic term for a gamma ray gun (DP). The Galaspheres seem to be armed with a larger, more powerful type (JW)

    ‘Leeks’
Early description of the Uranian Duo plant creatures (DP, EVT).

    Leyhart Building, The (left)
Destroyed by a Moon-based laser controlled by Berridge (MM). It would seem the rebuilt construction was equally unlucky, meeting a similar fate at the ultrasonics used by the Duos (JW).

    Lumi Pebble
White smooth ‘stones’ that are played with by the Lumis on Jupiter. They do not seem to be a natural mineral and may come from the Lumis themselves, though it is never stated what it is. Ground into powder and mixed in water, it cures the shrinking caused by the venom of Jovian Snakes (SS). A similar condition caused by contamination from a meteorite found on Pallas (SS), and a gaseous vapour encountered on Jupiter (SG) were also cured by it.

    Lumies
Refered to as the only animal life on Jupiter, they resemble dark furry seals with large eyes. Their skins retain heat for years, making them a valuable if unethical commodity (SJ). Their calls are refered to as ‘barking’, which they do often during the mating season. They are also the source of Lumi Pebbles, white ‘stones’ which they play with (SS, SG).

    Lumen
Planet orbiting the star Sirius and home to the crystalline Lumina. There are a million Lumina living there, and the region they inhabit is in darkness for six hours at a time, suggesting a planetary rotation of twelve or so hours. (PL)

    Lumina (right)
Silicon-based, glowing crystalline life forms from the planet Lumen orbiting the star Sirius. Roughly cylindrical and a few feet high, they float by an unknown means and can communicate telepathically. They are advanced, recharging themselves by the light of Sirius itself, and capable of faster-than-light space travel - the journey taking a matter of hours. They have never travelled to our solar system prior to encountering Galasphere 347 and while the oxygen atmosphere on the UGO worls make visits difficult for the Lumina, Raeburn is eager for Haggarty to find a way to protect them for future visits (PL)

    Lumina Ship
Resembing a dumbell with nodules on each sphere, it seemingly appears out of nowhere from travelling faster than light. Its similarity in design to Neptunian ships leads one to suspect they may have had contact in the past, though it is never mentioned (PL).

    Lunalt
Extremely hard mineral mined on the Moon by the Dawlish Mining Company, and the only ore Termoids cannot burrow through (TVC09).

    Summary
The series features the vocal talents of Dick Vosburgh, Ronnie Stevens, Libby Morris, Murray Kash and Ysanne Churchman, and comprises 39 half-hour episodes. This series is also known by its US title Planet Patrol to avoid confusion with the 1950s American live-action series of the same name. The marionettes used in the series incorporated some elements of Gerry Anderson's Supermarionation technique - specifically their mouths would move in synch with dialogue.

In the year 2100, Earth, Mars and Venus have banded together to form the United Galactic Organization (UGO). Space Patrol is the UGO's military wing, and the series follows the actions of this interplanetary police force, focusing on the crew of Galasphere 347 (sometimes referred to as Galasphere 024) under the command of the heroic (and, unusually for this type of series, bearded) Captain Larry Dart. The crew includes the elfin Slim from Venus, and the sausage-mad Russian-accented Husky from Mars. These are from Venusian and Martian civilizations and not from Earth colonies there. Providing technical support on Earth is Irish genius Professor Aloysius O’Brien O’Rourke Haggarty.[1] Haggarty's talkative pet Martian Parrot (a Gabblerdictum Bird) rarely accompanies the crew on missions. It was brought back from Mars and taught to talk in "The Slaves of Neptune" episode. Keeping them all on a tight rein are Colonel Raeburn and his super-efficient Venusian secretary, Marla. The show was somewhat sexist in comments from its characters, reflecting the times when it was made.

The series was sold overseas and broadcast in the USA, Canada and Australia, and in spite of the very low budget—which meant that sometimes the shadow of a puppet could be seen behind a "TV Screen" before the communication device was supposedly turned on—the show rated strongly with young audiences in many regions (including New York City)[2] and garnered a huge following, with Babylon 5 creator J. Michael Straczynski stating that it was his favourite TV show as a child.

    Background
Leigh had previously worked with Gerry Anderson on children's puppet series, and there are some obvious similarities between Space Patrol and Anderson's Fireball XL5, although Space Patrol was made on a lower budget. Arthur Provis, Anderson's former business partner in AP Films was responsible for the cinematography. For many years it was believed that all but a handful of episodes had been destroyed, until a complete cache of 16 mm prints was discovered in the loft at Roberta Leigh's home. Despite their scratched and grainy condition, they were of sufficient historic interest to warrant a DVD release. Selected episodes were issued on DVD in 2001, and the complete series was released in 2003 on Region 0 discs. Two episodes have survived from the original 35 mm prints and are available on Blu-ray Disc.[3] Original style of the series
Although compared (and often confused) with the Gerry Anderson productions (due to the similar use of voice-synchronised marionettes), Space Patrol stands out on its own. This is mainly due to the boldness of a few creative choices. The only music involved is extremely avant-garde, the theme being made by Roberta Leigh herself using electronic equipment she bought from a local store after asking an assistant for anything that made interesting noises. F. C. Judd was responsible for creating all the electronic music for the series; he was an early British electronic experimenter, amateur radio expert, circuit designer, author and contributor to many wireless and electronics magazines from the 1950s to the 1990s. Everything had its peculiar noise with the exception of the Galasphere taking off in that rockets too made the same noise taking off, as did even a chemical rocket used in one episode.

In addition, the marionettes used for Space Patrol were more realistic-looking and less cartoon-like than those being used on Fireball XL5; in terms of relative realism, the puppets of Space Patrol fall between that of Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons. There were two types of robots, and the ones with the thick upper bodies were mainly used.
Another notable feature is that the music used in the opening sequence may be the first TV theme to be realised entirely through electronic means. That distinction has commonly been ascribed to the BBC's Doctor Who but the first episode of Space Patrol premiered on ABC in the Midlands on 7 April 1963, preceding Doctor Who by more than seven months (that series debuted on 23 November 1963).[citation needed]

Final credits always showed panoramic views over a gigantic city of the future, and never featured any music; only the throb of some industrial machinery, sounding like a gigantic pump or a steam engine, beat in rhythm. The male characters from the planet Venus (Slim for example) presented obvious androgyne features (in contrast to the rustic, virile Martians). Thus the style of the entire series created an extremely eerie atmosphere, that remains rarely matched even by the best adult science-fiction on screen.

    The science
Whereas Gerry Anderson had a rocket ship in Fireball XL5 that could travel light years to planets around other stars as though they were just a few million miles away, Space Patrol took a more realistic approach. Because of limited speed, trips to other planets in our solar system could take weeks or months and this was facilitated by the crew of the Galasphere going into a freezer chamber and being put in suspended animation for the trip. A robot would then take over (its movements were said to cost £2,000 a time rather than being just a puppet.) The zirgon ray (faster than light) could be used from Earth to wake them up in an emergency. The term "galaxy" was used inaccurately, but consistently, to refer to a solar system in the series, so "Galactic Control" only supervised the local planets and "other galaxies" referred to nearby star-systems.

On other planets, they would use dial-selector translators (dial P for Pluto) to talk to alien beings - at the time, even some serious scientists considered the possibility of life on Venus, Mars and maybe elsewhere. Life support in hazardous atmospheres was provided by a "Moolung" - a sealed cylindrical transparent helmet, and the crew would often ride around on "Hover Jets", or more rarely, an "Ion Gun" which looked like a giant sparkler firework. Neptune was said to have atomic heating but none of the planets were really cold, such as when Dart walked about on Pluto (in "The Buried Spaceship") without any extra protection in what would be temperatures of about -230 °C.

The Galasphere had a top speed of about 800,000 mph, using "meson power". In "The Talking Bell" episode, they use "Boost Speed", which is dangerous, but allows them to travel at almost one million miles per hour for a long period. Meson power is dangerous to use in atmosphere. The engine also used gamma rays and 'Yobba rays'. The Galasphere has a force field which would protect it from enemy missiles, and it also turned out to protect them from the mind control of the evil Neptunians who were thousands of years ahead of Earth people, with great mental powers, and who hated work.

The Galasphere was constructed of Plutonite from Pluto, and a number of times, like in "The Human Fish", it also travelled underwater. Pluto was the furthest they normally travelled but after an accident they went way beyond that to a self-heated new planet which was full of giants who treated the Galasphere as a toy. Another time, an alien from Alpha Centauri visited them and installed a device which allowed the Galasphere to travel faster than light (at which point it vanished). They had their adventure twenty five trillion miles away and then returned to Earth, and just made it, with Galasphere 347 collapsing under the strain of such travel, just as they left it. In "The Planet of Light", Dart and Slim were taken to a planet circling Sirius (8.7 light years away) in just a few hours. This fast journey was necessary as the "light beings" who took them would be poisoned by air, so the two had to rely on their own supplies.

In "The Rings of Saturn" and several other episodes, they were in Galasphere 024, which was later referred to as Galasphere 347, which is what comes from continually using file footage.

Ok, when I am not searching for new life in Bubsy, I am actually enjoying mankind's search for life elsewhere.

Taking a paws (see what I did there) from Bubsy, I have loved following the space program. The Space Shuttle program was a great part of my child hood, Skylab, etc. But nothing was more fun than "Neptune all Night" and the Voyager 2 flyby of Neptune in 1989.

I have a video channel on YouTube where I recorded some of that:

Later there was the probe that landed on Titan. The rovers on Mars. And in mid-July we will get the first close up look at Pluto with the New Horizons probe. I am so excited. Only a new Bubsy game could be more exciting. Well... nah, but it would come close.

NASA has released an app where you can get a computer simulation of the New Horizons mission called "Nasa's Eyes" and I made a video showing that off here:

Then I saw this article and said on Facebook:

"Oh cool, I could play Bubsy 3D on the New Horizons probe. Excellent!"

And hey, we have a tie in for the Bubsy blog!! So check it the New Horizons probe progress and tune in when mankind makes another epic bookmark in space exploration!

And now, the feature article preserved here in the Bubsy blog just in case the Interwebs march on....

The CPU from the original PlayStation is guiding a probe to Pluto
    By James Vincent

    @jjvincent

You probably already know that your smartphone is more powerful than the computers used to land astronauts on the Moon. But did you know that the processor used in the original Sony PlayStation is currently guiding a space probe the size of a grand piano towards Pluto? Yep, the same MIPS R3000 CPU that once ran Final Fantasy VII and Metal Gear Solid was repurposed by NASA in 2006 to fire thrusters, monitor sensors, and transmit data from the New Horizons space probe. You may have thought defeating Ruby Weapon was an achievement but try orchestrating a gravity-assisted flyby past Jupiter on a four-hour time delay.

This isn’t unusual behavior for NASA though, as the space agency always prefers the tried-and-tested to the cutting-edge. The next-generation Orion spacecraft, for example — the one that will hopefully take humans to Mars one day — is controlled by an IBM processor made back in 2002. The CPU in New Horizons may have been tweaked a little to better survive the radiation bombardment of space, but other than that it's the same old chip: NASA’s engineers don’t need power; they need reliability.
This is why there’s nothing better than a reputation staked on years of commercial use. Is your old PlayStation still working? Good. Because New Horizon has been in space for nine years already. The probe was launched back in January 2006 but is now on its final approach to Pluto, moving at a speed of approximately 36,373 mph with a projected arrival date of July 14th. Once there it will explore the dwarf planet and its moons before moving on to travel through the Kuiper belt — the massive asteroid belt that fringes our Solar System. This chip is going to parts of space where man-made objects have never been before, meanwhile your PlayStation is stuck in a closet somewhere beneath a stack of Pokémon trading cards.

There are so many amazing things in my Bubsy search tonight. Sometimes I search and it is the same ole same ole and sometimes I search and I find things like this, out for a year and I did not see before. Crazy.

But I love this fan theory of how Bubsy pulled a Turbo in Wreck-It-Ralph and actually TOOK OVER Sonic.

    Check this out....

Bubsy pulled a "Turbo" on Sonic (contains "Wreck-It Ralph" spoilers)
submitted 1 year ago *by Cardboard_Boxer

In "Wreck-It Ralph," a character named Turbo went missing after his game was unplugged. It is later discovered that he had taken over another game, Sugar Rush, and turned himself into the main character.
This image suggests that Bubsy the Bobcat, a failed video game mascot from the 90s, did something similar to Sonic.
Like Turbo, Bubsy hasn't been seen in over a decade.
Turbo, when posing as King Candy, managed to change his appearance but still retained some of his original features.
Modern Sonic has some of Bubsy's features, at least in comparison to classic Sonic: longer ears, skinnier body, etc.
Bubsy and modern Sonic are also voiced, unlike classic Sonic.

YEAH! BUBSY TWO! BUBSY THREE! BUBSY FUCKING TWO!
But seriously, for some strange reason this really works out. Bubsy's whole personality just seems sort of similar to the Candy King. Poor classic Sonic, I miss him. D:

King Candy had Sour Bill. Bubsy probably had some random minion brainwashed into helping him, disguised as Sonic for his personal amusement.

Classic Sonic seems to live on in Sonic Boom.
There's a TV Show (though no Jaleel) in association with the video game.
The roster seems to be limited to characters from Sonic 1, 2, CD, and 3/S&K.
This iteration's Sonic appears to be leaner and scrappier contender, constantly on the run and only able to use makeshift or ramshackle repairs to his shoes.

I'm reading too deep into this, I'm sure. But the parallels between early Sonic and Sonic Boom have me looking forward to it.

This was such cool news I had to post it now. Bubsy has been hacked into Sonic 2.

This is too funny. Check it out on this You Tube video:

And more discussion of it here:

    http://sonicresearch.org/forums/index.php?/topic/4404-bubsy-in-sonic-2/

Looks like they exaggerate the falling damage and just let him die a lot. But still want to see if I can play this. I have often thought hacking Bubsy into Zool on the Jaguar would also be fun.

If you try this hack let us know what you think of the game in the comments below.

Found the file and attached it. Thanks again PacGuy64 for the hack!

So I was cruising along, getting material for this blog, (and I will admit, gearing up for the new Space Patrol blog) when I realized... oops, Bubsy's birthday was on May 4th!

HAPPY 22nd Birthday to our favorite Bobcat game mascot!

In the future when people are going around saying "May the 4th be with you" for all those Star Wars fans that is actually the release date of Bubsy too. Should be easy enough to remember.

So Bubsy and birthday material? Well found the previous birthday wishes on Atariage.com.

Found where Bubsy wishes someone happy birthday. (warning, strong language)

What is cool is the Bubsy birthday image with him holding a mug that we made here got used for the video link. Cool!

Ok one Youtube link published in April of the history of Bubsy in seven minutes this is a really good article made in the perspective of those that actually like Bubsy, which makes this unique. And towards the end of the video you see why the perspective was so different than most reviews out there.

    Wasn't that fun?

Here is another fun gem I found which is actually an old entry: What if Bubsy was put into a new(er) more modern game?

"(What if) Bubsy the Bobcat should appear in... Hotline Miami.
Okay, he'd be crap. We'll admit it. He's here for no other reason than that he already has an animal head and we want to see him busted against a wall until his entrails come out. After 21 years, he's still that annoying."
