Hey guys, Doctor Clu here with a great picture of me made by SpongeFox.

Here lately SpongeFox has had some fun mixing Bubsy with Bonkers characters, let's see how that went...

Bonkers, meet Bubsy. I can see the pleasure is all Bubsy's.

So some cool pics of Bonkers AS Bubsy

Loved this one. Just very Bubsy like.

But all's fine and good, but I think Bonkers is tired of being Bubsy.

Ok, some characters, like Boogerman here, should not try to be Bubsy. LOL!

I liked this one because it captures the true spirit of Bubsy.

SpongeFox, awesome work and can't wait to see more in the future.
    HAPPY NEW DECADE BUBSY FANS!!!

Was having fun with the Fractured Furry Tales game, seeing what was inside, and so far I have found some interesting items. These images were taken looking at the images in RAW format, and what we got was a greyscale image, but it gives us an idea of what is there. Hopefully once I figure out how to convert from the Jaguar image formats we can get a better look at these pictures. But what you see here is the title screen...

    And background shots...

And for those that have not heard the MOD track for Bubsy, here were the MOD tracks from the game.. This archive was from the Fading Twilight download area, but I've checked, same music that was in the rom.

    BUBSY8.zip

    Hope to have updates soon.

Oh and we have heard from the Producer of the Fractured Furry Tales game, more about that here...

And the creator of the modplayer on the Jaguar, found on Bubsy which can be found here..

    More soon!

When I originally started collecting Bubsy Art, I found that most of the art out there was Sponge Fox, and never would have imagined I'd have fun talking about some ideas of Bubsy art and various tinkering with concepts.

So first off the latest artwork. This is Bubsy with Bonkers with his niece and nephew. I thought it captured the characters well.

The next two were done in fun tinkering with what Bubsy would do if bored. Sponge Fox wants you to know this is not some kind of inflation fetish. But we Bubsy fans know that Bubsy has a big head anyway.

So here was a fascinating one, what if Bubsy was given more Bobcat like markings?

And finally, Bubsy with the Tiny Toones cast:

Well thank you Sponge Fox, really hope we see more Bubsy adventures in the future, these were fun.

... I got the Bubsy shirt, and had fun wearing it when I went to kareokee at the Plato Loco here in Dallas. I took this picture, and was starting to photoshop out things in the background when I just went whole hog and had fun with it:

Ironically tonight while wearing this shirt I sang "This Cats on A Hot Tin Roof"
(This is not me singing, but to let you know how the tune of this song goes...)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v9QeCEYhdhQ

    And was a smashing success.

Oh, and been talking to Sponge Fox lately, had some fun tinkerings with Bubsy, hopefully she'll share some of that here soon.

But in the meantime, here is a desktop theme for Bubsy. It is the ends of the Bubsy games showing Bubsy (1) from the SNES, Bubsy (2) from the Genesis, and Bubsy (3) from the Jaguar. Shows the variety of the game series.

The Bubsy games contained little comics in them that have inspired hundreds of drawings of fan art. We had a request from Sponge Fox who was nice enough to let us feature some of her art here, so I figured I would get this posted so we all could enjoy yet another bit of the Bubster.

Here is the comic book from the first Bubsy game:
    Bubsy1.zip

Here is the comic book from the first Bubsy game in Japanese:
    Bubsy_1j.zip

Here is the comic book from the second Bubsy game:
    Bubsy2.zip

It is my hope to someday rework the third Bubsy game manual so it has a comic book segment to explain the game. I already have the story worked out, just need to carefully select the art from the above comic books, change the dialog... Anyway, enjoy the Bubsy comics above for now!

Earlier in my blog I made my own Bubsy shirt, having given up on finding the real mccoy, and here was my rendition..

But today I found the real thing, and I made sure to buy it, but if it never shows up, WE HAVE PICTURES!!!!

Wow.. this is an amazing day.

So my wife wanted a Wii, and we found one on sale over at the AAFES PX where I work. No Tax!

Yeh I always knew that when it came to my 7th gen game system it would be a Wii. But wasn't sure when I would get it. A really fun system.

So they have the ability to make little yous called "Mii's" or a "Mii". You have the basic, and I do mean BASIC character editor to give a little body a big head with the usual eyes, nose, hair, typical human colors for skin (no green or blue for example). I really think when they made the Wii that they were trying to have people be down to Earth, social community, and have the Mii be a realistic representation of the user.

But now making a Mii with the limited character creator has become an art form. So I figured the Bubster needed to enter the Mii world. So I started originally after trying my hand it with this Mii...

Which was not a bad version for the Japanese Bubsy. But then I tried a few differences and got this...

And the Bubsy Mii walking around in Mii Plaza:

On the Wii they have the "Show Mii Off" channel where you can make and share Mii characters, and enter contests to make themed characters. Pretty fun. Bubsy is now there in the Mii world roaming around now.

    February 1st, 2009
Today I took another direction with the Bubsy Mii.

My wife made the comment that it was a shame the glasses (which were the ears) could not point a little higher. That was when I decided to use the eyebrows for the ears, and then use the Garfield glasses trick to give it the area around the mouth. I think the result was better.
So then I made my own Mii look like Bubsy so that I could have him in the Wii Fit games.

This one was great. Bubsy jumping up and cheering, just like he did the early 2D games.

Fun stuff. Hopefully I'll get more shots soon.

For the Atari 8-bit computer High Score Club we had a fun round of the arcade version of STAR WARS.

To have more fun, I asked everyone what their characters would look like if put in a STAR WARS setting, and they gave some unique answers. Little by little as a photoshop challenge I've created pictures for my other Atari friends for the fun of it, so here is what I have so far. This blog entry will change from time to time.

With the arrival of Super Bubsy last night, I feel my Bubsy Bobcat collection is basically complete...

As you can see, I've picked up where he has shown up on the covers of magazines, I have the playing guides... (isn't it great that God gives life so we can blow on stuff like this...LOL!)

I have all the Bubsy games across the platforms...

Bubsy (1) -Genesis, SNES/Super Famicon, PC (Super Bubsy)
Bubsy (2) - Genesis, SNES, Gameboy
    Bubsy (3) - Jaguar
    Bubsy 3D - Playstation

Bubsy spanned SIX platforms in the end! Not bad. (Seven if you include the Super Famicon)

And so I have all the games, the books, magazines, and the stuffed animal... oh wait, that was a fun story.

Really as best I can tell there was never a Bubsy stuffed animal. There was a shirt given away with the early release of Bubsy (have given up on finding that, though I am making one, more later) but no stuff animal. So I decided if other mascot collections have a stuffed animal, so should mine. So I worked to make one.

Making a Bubsy Bobcat stuffed animal

Here we have the Lion in a Bubsy Bobcat shirt I made. Cute enough, needs some touches.

Started with sewing the legs so they stayed down. I am taking a stuffed animal that was on all fours to stand on two and well, in the end it worked out well that way.

Next sewed the head so it came forward.

Modified the Lion tail to a Bobcat tail. Also took off the wiskers since Bubsy doesn't have wiskers in any of his pictures. Odd I know...

Groomed the fur on the face to bring out the eyes and other expressions. Did a lot of grooming. Also colored the nose from pink to black.

Took bits of the tail I removed and used them for eyelids. Also brought one of the arms down a bit.

Took more of that tail I removed and added the material to the ears to make them longer. I think the result is good, starting to thing of it, I might want to move the ears to the top of the head more at a later date. But still not bad. And then I trimmed the furr on the top of his head to bring out the wiff of hair (mohawk) that he has in the middle of his head.

Added the shirt and hey... kinda a cute little fella. I think he is probably more of a Bobcat cub, but hey the younger look of game characters work when you're talking stuffed animal form.

The stuffed animal looks a lot like the Japanese Bubsy with the ears more spreadout, and short legs... kinda the anime version. Really needs large cartoon ears and teeth, maybe I can rob those off a looney toones character somewhere next time I go to a flea market. But I think this was not bad, and I'm satisfied to have a Bubsy stuffed animal in the collection.

Coming up next, me making the last "needed" part of the Bubsy collection, the Bubsy shirt that I'm making for AnimeFest this weekend....

Ok, below is the results of the shirt I made. My first Bubsy Bobcat shirt....

Tonight I was looking for Bubsy Bobcat material using search engines other than Google. I tried one call PicSearch...

    http://www.picsearch.com

It was there that I ran into the art work of Phillip Vaughan who helped re-imagine the Bubsy character for the 1995 release for the PC platform "Super Bubsy", perhaps the best graphics for the 2D version of the Bubster. I found his art gallery at:

    http://www.vaughangallery.com/archive/profess.html

As always I like to ask the artists if I can use their materials, and hell it's just great knowing someone who remembers Bubsy Bobcat, so I got this nice letter from Phillip. Phillip, thanks and great artwork!!

    Hello (Doctor Clu),
I don't mind if you use the bubsy graphics that I worked on for your group. It was enjoyable reworking the original game with higher resolution and a larger color pallete. I had no other creative input then what you see. I think it was basically a direct port only with better graphics so ATI could show off their newest graphics card technology at the time. It was a fun gig, good times.
Sometime in the near future I'm going to redo my website, and I'll try and remind myself to make a link to your group. I'm glad that you noticed it, and hope you enjoy it
    Take care,

An alien race known as the "Woolies" have come to Earth to jack its supply of yarn...just sounds like something your cat would love right? Anyway, it's up to our talkative, hip (bob)cat Bubsy to save the Earth from these yarn-stealing bastards.

    What's it all about?
It's pretty much your basic, cartoon-style side scroller, but with a lot more humor. Bubsy's main attacks consists of jumping on enemies...and well, jumping then gliding down onto enemies. Most of the time you are hauling ass around these HUGE levels, trying to step as lightly as possible(as Bubsy is, unfortunately, a one-hit-kill kitty) to make it to the end. About every four or five levels a boss(or two) will show up, at which time you will glide-pounce them to death mercilessly.

Graphics - Awesome! Not pulling a Probe on us, Accolade did a great job of making the graphics on the Genesis version of Bubsy every bit as great as its SNES counterpart. The *huge* levels are incredibly lush with parallax effects and color, and the enemies and Bubsy have excellent animation. Sound - Bad-ass! Accolade shows off with Bubsy's large amount of speech, coming through clearly without the scratchiness were generally accustomed to. The music is great, though with the levels being so damn long, after about the second or third loop, you may want to turn it down a bit... Control - Frisky! You can make your way around pretty easily thanks to Bubsy's incredibly responsive control scheme. Though he won't stop on a dime, you have free movement in the air and Bubsy can even float(kind of). AI - Weak. Most of the enemies just seem to attack thin air, the only time it gets in the way is when you run into it. Replay value - Moderate. The game is so tough at certain points, I can't really see going back, but skipping those few levels may have you coming back to play occasionally. Tips for better gaming experiences:
The game is tough, and can be quite aggravating at times as the levels are sooooo big, and it only takes one hit to send you allllllllll the way back to the last marker. To reduce the stress, kill the timer, it serves no purpose but to make you rush through levels and make mistakes. Also, if you want, kick in the Infinite Lives code so you don't have to worry about getting pounded by the same enemies and level bosses everytime.

    Game Genie:
    Infinite time: ADTA-6AAC
    Infinite lives: RERT-86V4

Those enemies a little friskier than you thought? One hit kills got you down? The genie is pet friendly...give him a shot.
My rating: 80(out of 100) - I love Bubsy, I really do, but the game's tough difficulty level knocks it down quite a bit in my book. If you can hang with it though, it's an excellent platformer with one of the coolest cats you'll ever meet.

(bob)Cat's roar: I love this game! You go, bobcat, go! Excellent platformer with a feline that makes me proud to be a cat! In fact, you made the cover of EGM, you go kitty!

If you wait long enough, Bubsy will actually knock on the TV screen and say "Hello!?". It's hilarious!

GameFan named Bubsy the best new character of 1993.

Suing me, no, I'm suing you!:
Prior to Bubsy's release, Sega and Accolade were at each other's throats. Accolade had reverse-engineered the Genesis hardware so their games could be played without Sega's "Seal of Approval" or license. Sega took them to court, and lost as the ruling was that the coding was acceptable under the "Fair Use" doctrine. Accolade games prior to Bubsy have an extremely hard time being played on the model 1 Genesis, but will play easily on the model 2 Genesis as it has the "Licensed by Sega" part burnt into the Rom. Note: If you have a 32X, unlicensed games(like Double Dragon and earlier Accolade stuff) *will* play on the model 1 Genesis.

There have occationally been songs about Bubsy. I'll try to feature them here.

This one is a sound clip remix from the one shot cartoon "Series". But there was so much material in that show. You can see the original above, or you hear my remix. Me, I don't care so much for distorted sound and bursts of loud noise suddenly, so I edited all those bits out in the MP3 below.

The jackass thing for a Bubsy fan to do would be to find a real Bobcat and try to put a T-shirt on it with a red exclaimation point. Now as cool as this would be, the bobcat would probably say "WTF man?!?" and it wouldn't be pretty.

I joked about this time and time, and then I realized, what WOULD I do if I ever came across a real Bobcat? I live in Texas where Bobcats tend to live quite a lot, and I have friends who have had Bobcat sightings. When I hear their stories I am envious and scared for them at the same time. Mostly envious.

Here is a collection of tips across the internet on what to do if you really come across a Bobcat (for real).

As you've seen with house cats, these tips need to depend on the mood of the Bobcat when you run into them, and the differing temperment of the Bobcat. Results may vary in other words, but here is what some people advise....

    http://www.newportbay.org/bobcatst.htm
Bobcats play an important role in our ecosystems, particularly in terms of keeping rodent populations under control. Increasingly, as their native habitats spaces have given way to development, bobcats have become adapted to urban open spaces and can now be found in areas such as our own Back Bay. Still, bobcats are a cryptic and reclusive species, tending to avoid human contact such that people are often unaware of their presence. Indeed, it is a rare and special opportunity to see one. While generally not considered a threat to humans; they are powerful animals and, when cornered, can be dangerous. Precaution is warranted. Tips for living with bobcats include:

    1. As with all wildlife, never approach or corner a bobcat. Upon encountering one on the trail or other setting, give them a wide berth and way to exit.

    2. Do not attempt to feed a bobcat and avoid leaving pet food outside. This is includes birdseed in that bobcats can be attracted to the birds and rodents that will visit the feeder.

    3. If possible, eliminate outdoor sources of water that might be attractive to bobcats (i.e., drip irrigation, fish ponds, and bird baths) that are located near residential structures. As an alternative, you might purchase a large water dish (as for a large dog) to put outside your fence and keep it filled with water.

    4. Trim and clear shrubbery that may provide cover for bobcats or prey.

    5. If necessary, you can discourage bobcats by making loud noises and throwing rocks to make them leave.

    6. Keep cats and small dogs indoors, allowing them outside only under strict supervision.

    7. Keep other small animals in well-protected areas and in sturdy cages at night. Cages made of chicken wire are meant only for keeping small animals contained. They will not keep bobcats or other predators from entering; stronger gauge wiring will be required.

    8. Trapping and relocation of bobcats is not a recommended or viable alternative. Wild animals are territorial and like species will simply take over the area vacated by the relocated or dead animal.

    July 3, 2010

Was camping on a friend's property and the friend that stays there in the country with the 30 acres of land talked about the various snakes, the coyote, fox, armadillos (five different colors) and along the way he mentioned running into a mother Bobcat and her cubs. That naturally interested me.

Said the Bobcat would have fun watching my friend from a distance, just seeing what he would do. There was one time my other friend who lives on the property came across the Bobcat in a car and the Bobcat just stood there.

This Bobcat was huge, they said about between thigh and knee high. Like I've always said, wouldn't mind seeing one from a distance.

    "Tjah....Bubsy the Bobcat?

I had no idea at first what language this was. I tried Babelfish and FreeTranslation, my translation sites for years, but no luck there. And then I tried the google translator....

    http://translate.google.com

...I got SOME words translated when I did a Czech to English translation. Then I plugged in a Norwegian translation and got this...

    "Tjah .... Bubsy the Bobcat?

... not because it's so good. We're talking about a medium-ok Sonic-copy here, to make it clear.
More because everyone seems to hate the game, but I've actually had the great pleasure of it once a time. The game is neither frustrating or difficult, that all should have it. It's just a game where you die a lot, but to return, inhuman many ekstraliv, so it could go up. Some random jump on certain paths are increasing frustration, but after the 4-5 experiment is where you go through most things, and who said there is enough life to take off, and you have never run a long way from the nearest checkpoint.
And control is not that bad, but hold only Y in constant to float, so they do not die by falling 10 meters.

Bubsy not deserve classic-stamp, but it does not deserve all the crap has been given."

That was a lot of fun to try to do. Yet another person in another part of the world that saw Bubsy as a average platformer. Which is fine.

Now this is interesting, I found this link of outfits at Q&C Militaria for London's Grenadier Guards...

    http://www.qcmilitaria.com/headpage1.htm

    ... and get this...

"Royal Artillery Volunteer Bubsy with badge."

This struck me as odd. I am currently asking what a "Bubsy" is, I'm guessing a hat, and the badge is the silver exclaimation point looking plume on the side of the hat. Was this the inspiration for Bubsy Bobcat's strange exclaimation point on his shirt? Maybe just Co-incidence?

Oh they just wrote back!! How Cool!

    "Hello (Doctor Clu),

The busby is the hat, black animal hair. The badge represents an old grenade style bomb with flames coming out of the top. On this badge is a canon inside a wreath.

    やま (yama) -- Mountain
    ねこ (neko) -- Cat
    Bubsy ( バブジー )
    の (no) -- of
    大 (dai) -- Great
    冒険 (bouken) -- Adventure ***

Last but not least, I bought Yamaneko Bubsy no Bouken (The Adventure of Bubsy the Mountain Cat) * for the Super Famicon. I was going to include the ebay link, but it would just disappear in about a month anyway, and I posted the pictures from this auction already, so no need. What a trip. First off, I wasn't going to open the game or play it, it was in really nice shape. Well, I did open it, and found the instruction manual had the comic book in Japanese, that was great! It was nice looking. I packaged it all up. Then my Otaku ** wife said "Why don't you try out the game? I wanna see it!!" She knows of my Otaku fandom for Bubsy.

So I went to plug in the game. Wouldn't fit in my SNES. There are two plastic tabs in the SNES that prevent Super Famicon games from fitting. Not being a big SNES fan (and only having one for the Bubsy games) I crudely broke away the plastic tabs, and the Super Famicon game fit... mostly. Had to kinda work with it. But in the end, the game powered up!! And you got the lettering you see above.

Man they thought the voice sound sample on the Genesis and SNES was bad for Bubsy, the Japanese version he kinda mumbles something, and it is done in a less than cartoony/cute voice. LOL Bizarre. Lettering is changed to the Japanese character set, and there are minor other changes that you'd only see if you watched the english version next to the American version. Had fun playing this for a while.

I'm going to an anime fest soon, which has all sorts of animation and cartoon related material there, but it tends to focus on the Japanese contributions to this. I'm thinking of making a Bubsy shirt to wear to this (since many show up in costume to these, many video game related... like the 700 that showed up in the record breaking video game costume event at Akon this last year) and put the exclaimation mark on the front, and the Bubsy name in Japanese on the back of the shirt. I'll post pictures here when I do.

To summarize, I'm not sure how far reaching Bubsy has been in the world. It is hard to google Bubsy in a character set I'm not used to (Aramic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, etc etc...) I would love to find Bubsy is alternate packaging for other countries, wish I could find them, and if some are brought to my attention, I'll post them here. To close, there is this one I've yet to identify... but good to know the Bubster has been around.

    * Translation from http://hg101.classicgaming.gamespy.com/bubsy/bubsy.htm
** obsessed person of fandom, or in my wife's case, with Japanese, Korean, Asian, Tawainese rock artists...
    - Yamaneko Literally means "Mountain Cat" a wild cat that is native to the island of Tsushima, Japan. (Well, so one website claimed, which also claimed it was also a Japanese slang word for a part of the female anatomy. Can't confirm about a cat from Tushima, but I did find the Yamamayaa, which you can find in Okinawa Japan, another "mountain cat".)

*** Thank you Yun-young my friend for the character translation!

-Looks like if you remove all romanji (?) characters the Japanese title is ... やまねこバブジーの大冒険, with Bubsy being the バブジー part? That comes out "BABUJI" in the google translator I've been told "バブジー is Katakana that Japanese uses for Romanji. There are matching Katakana for each Hirakana…" ***

With the comment we had yesterday (about the taxidermy job on the last Bobcat) I started looking around and found this picture of another job, and yeh, this is a lot better. I like how they took a picture of it in the back yard, and I have to say... wow... I think I would flip my lid if I saw this in my back yard.

YAMANEKO which I understand is Japanese for "Mountain Cat". So here we get to see the Japanese spin on Bubsy.

These were interesting screen shots of Bubsy 3D. I like the one where Bubsy is in what looks like a city street and he is facing the camera. A BIG part of the problem I had with Bubsy 3D was that you looked at his back throughout the entire game. Bubsy is probably facing the screen since he just got back from dieing.

Apparently someone who thought the game was obscure enough to be forgotten, but fun enough that they liked it. I know that is why I like the Bubster.

It's fun, but I wouldn't call it the best game, not even close.

The controls and gameplay are just a bit too awkward for me, and the sound bytes aren't varied enough (though for an older game, they're not bad)

"I'd like a Bubsy Collection that includes the PC game Super Bubsy, the Super NES and Game Boy versions of Bubsy 2, and the PlayStation game Bubsy 3D. It would come with a bonus DVD containing a high-quality print of the Thanksgiving 1993 TV special "Bubsy: What could possibly go wrong?".

"Wiki says: Bubsy has a one-liner near the start of the game, in the first level Cheese Wheels of Doom, where he asks "What could possibly go wrong?" Due to poor sound quality from heavy audio compression (to save data space on cartridges), players would think Bubsy said in place "Watch your pockets or you'll go wrong!" This created mixed reaction, from laughter to confusion. The former developers even to this day refuse to comment on this."

Bubsyverse Bio of Bubsy Bubsy is the hero of all of the Bubsy games, whether you like it or not. He's a smart-aleck with no room to talk--he has such a bad attention span that he even let his niece and nephew (the Bubsy Twins) wander into history itself without him noticing!! Being that he acts like he knows everything, he talks a lot, providing humorous intros to stages. In addition, Bubsy loooves yarn, but also has a soft spot for children.
