1. You know the REAL beauty of this? SIO2PC has been ported to the Macs now... http://www.atariage.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=82249 So now you can have a Mac in a 810 case acting as a virtual drive for the Atari 8-bits. If I didn't have to trash a 810 to accomplish it, I would probably do what you did. I have SIO2OSX running on 10.3.9 on a G3 300 mhz. And you will need a special usb to serial adaptor, but they explain all that there.
2. If in a pinch, MetalGuy says he can repair floppy drives. You can see one of his products at... http://www.atariage.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=83848
3. Only problem I've had with the 810 (I love that really retro early beige look, and the sound effect.. and let's face it, if someone gives an icon for a drive in a Atari emulator, it tends to be the facing of a 1050 or 810 especially. Like in SIO2OSX (Mac version) that one has a 810 facing. Any got derailed there for a bit, problem I have is the 810 is single density, or at least mine is. Now if there was a way to hack the 810 to be double density then I would toss my other drives.
4. Welcome back to the Atari scene!! I've looked at the screws on my 1050 drive and they appear to be screws that are about 7/8th inches long from head to tip. The tip is self tapping, the head is a rounded philips with the turns on the screw at a little under 1/16th inch. My apologies if you don't use the standard system often, I tried to find a metric ruler. Bear in mind that the screws (this one was brass) is a special kind for plastic. So a machine or wood screw, by design, could split the plastic. Basically these plastic screws had a consistant shaft radius with narrow turns (as I mentioned, under 1/16th inch) to fix into plastic without splitting it. My dad came up with a good solution. Atari generally used a similar screw for various items. I took a screw out of a Atari joystick for example and it measures at 6/8 (3/4) but the turns are still at under 1/16th so it held the drive together basically. Just some suggestions. Worse case scenario, the handy man's secret weapon ... duct tape! Guitarman's link for the MyIde is a great one. The best one perhaps would be... http://www.atarimax.com There you get two choices. The MyIde modules (like the MyIde and 1 meg flash) or the SIO2PC cable. I always suggest to those setting up for the first time to try the SIO2PC route first. I mean there are thousands of images out there, you hook your Atari to your (IBM or Mac based) PC and then run one of those images. I love it! Once you have that (and quick access to images all across the internet like that.. which is helpful when people have new programs here to try, or to jump into the game contests here) then later you can set up the MyIde hard drive. There are other solutions to hard drives BTW. ATR 8000 (ooolllllddddddd I believe MFM and IDE solutions), Black Box (bit costly, but hey, it does SCSI!), and there is a module out there for plugging into the expansion port of the back of the XL or XE. So take your pick. Anyway, again welcome back, let me know if you need anything to get you started, and keep an eye out for the Atari BBS's available over telnet... The Cafe (run on real 8-bit Aari)- telnet://thecafe.dtdns.net 8888 Boot Factory (emulated 8-bit Atari) - Telnet://bfbbs.no-ip.com Dark Forces (run on real Atari Mega ST) - telnet://24.177.23.74 There are other ones, so keep your eye open for them.
5. I would suggest you uprade the ROM in your XF551 to one of the Hyper-XF Roms. It corrects some of the problems the drive has with detecting density and it also supports higher Data transfer rates. There is also a Hyper-FX version that allows you to use a 720K 3.5 inch mechanism in the drive. I've read that using that version, there is a mode that allows you to put 4 complete disk images on one 720K disk and switch between them, as if you were swapping the real floppies. One of my XF551's has this, but I have never tested the 4 in 1 disk mode on it. 1023896 Any links? 1023919 LOL! No kid! I am not sure what I want to do about the XF551.. I have two and they are both dead. As for me I might try to get a percom drive working. At the moment I am using a Rana 1000 and some 1050 drives.
6. Ok, that link has been fixed and here are some more pics of my setup...
7. At least Combat was more fun than the Jaguar's pack in game, Cybermorph. See my love for that game... http://www.geocities.com/doctor_clu/cybermorph.html (A few pics are missing but you'll get the point.)
8. MyIde 4.2? Really, where can I find this?
9. Just a humble request (since I have wanted to get into this but just got tied up the last two weeks) since the Olympics go on till Sunday, is there any chance we could extend this till Sunday?
10. I'm happy to add that along with the Dal-ACE page, a better tribute to AUNT (the ST user group the Atari Users of North Texas), and the JYBOLAC main page and artcase have all been updated. Check it all out at... http://jybolac.atari.org
11. Could you please post that link? And where in the hell is Tom Hunt anyway?
12. I'm still amazed by the graphics art on the cover of some of those newsletters.
13. Hehe... I see 20 people have tried to look at the site since my alloted usage was used up for the hour. Well my apologies, but thanks and please try again later. 1022545 These are great doctorclu. I wish someone would make an archive of Atari usergroup programs and newsletters before they get lost in time. Allan 1022576 Thanks! Well, that is the idea of the Dal-ACE tribute site is to have a place for people to referrence to see images, get the feeling of the user group, and get the disk images. That said, glad you liked it, and heck, the website is not bad for the occational access, but how about I make the images available here too! Just remember to check out the site later. 14. Thanks for the insite on this. Strikes me as a good idea, but being a bit fan of the 8-bits, if I want a graphical interface I hace IBM based and Macintosh computers for that. The 8-bit interface of text is a nice striking difference to what I have to work with. That said, I was really looking forward to trying to trying Tom Hunt's ATOS graphical interface for the 8-bit. But his site seems to be down. (Picture of ATOS attached.)
15. Hehe... I see 20 people have tried to look at the site since my alloted usage was used up for the hour. Well my apologies, but thanks and please try again later.
16. J.Y.B.O.L.A.C. (Just Your Basic Online Atari Computer Users that seem to mull around Texas) is proud to announce the revamping of the Dal-ACE tribute site. http://www.geocities.com/doctor_clu/DALACE.html NOTE! - For the actual files, please download the 2 mb worth of images attached later on in this message. Dal-ACE was the 8-bit Atari club that served the north Texas area from 1978 to 1992 and saw the Atari community through many developments in Atari. Many fond memories, and interesting early programs can be found on what we were able to recover of the disks we could find. Enjoy!
17. I'll be happy to write some as well. Start on this tonight.
18. It's a fun game and it works just fine with JUGS. 1021501 I'll be trying this when I get home. Thanks for the new game!
19. Oh.... My.... God! Just when I thought I'd seen everything. That is freakin' awesome. A big-box Atari 8-bit (presumably with a detachable keyboard). I like the one with the slanted front best. The top one looks a lot like an Amiga 2000. I don't particularly like the idea of it being dual-processor with an 80186, however. If they wanted a 16-bit machine it would have been better to have gone with a 65816 but I don't know if those had come out as early as 1983. The amount of vaporware Atari Inc created was truly unprecedented and will probably never be equalled again in an american tech company. 1020258 Very cool Curt. Nice that you might be able to get the 1600 XL case. Heck, nice that it still exists.
20. Nice chat room. When do you meet? Atarnews tends to meet Sunday morning and Tuesday night. I believe Ataritimes meets Monday night, which means the whole rest of the week (my apologies for others I am unaware of) should be open.
21. there's also Plasma Pong within Defender 2000 1021056 Oh really? How do you access that?
22. Excellent day no doubt. Been on since 10am, it is now 1AM my time. I am gonna be pretty tired at work tomorrow. Stephen Anderson 1021159 Wow! Yeh I chatted till I dropped, which was at the 12 hour mark at 10:15 CST or so. Would like to thank all the people that made the chat such a smashing success (Stephen, Matthias, Dan, Mr. Atari, Rick D, MetalGuy, BF2k, Bob_c, Bryan, Warerat,.. and anyone else I might have forgot. I know that the Tuesday chat tends to have more names, but we covered a lot of topics, and well, 12 hours at least (not entirely sure when it ended) But again, thanks! Next chat should be at Ataritime.com I believe. Can someone please give some details on that? And then at Atarinews again on Tuesday at 8 pm. See you there!
23. Well, it is currently 7:48 pm... been chatting since 10 am.. and still going. Please do join us on this excellent day of chatting.
24. I´d knock that number down by a further two since one is a soundtrack (T2K) and SW2K figures twice but they´re essentially identical. 1020760 Well, I know the listed games do not include the amateur games out there. Asteriods, Jagmania, Painter, Clicks, Slam Racer, plus the hidden games within Games (2600 Pitfall in Pitfall, Pyro Pong in Battlesphere, etc.)
