Nice to see best is still offering the repair service....good to have handy in a pinch.

For starters, best is indeed awesome.   Wrote Brad on that before I tried to repair my parts CD unit and he was all "if the CD unit has been opened I cannot repair".  Which is fair really.   Mine was opened, gutted of parts, and what not.   However, he was excellent for getting the plunger and patch pieces that I was missing.  Actually used that recently repaired CD unit a lot since its repair.

Cubanismo you are a legend, I adjusted the switch contacts. Problem solved and Atari Jaguar CD now working. Thank you royally.

He is quite a the offiando on CD repair isn't he?   :D   We are not ready to shuck the CD units just yet so that's a good thing.

You can then switch to strafing from a distance but yes it's a battle of wills! Needs a lot of goes but then you do start to survive better. Plenty of time left in this round, next poll will start on Sunday :)

In this game with the gravity and trying to strafe I looked like flappy bird bobbing up and down. :P

Okay, last run for at least a few days...still haven't got to this "city" you all speak of.  Literally crashed into an enemy plane here!!! I was rolling too!

Those planes.   All kinds of three dimensional space and they happen to hit you.  But let's just be honest, they are really just World War I cruise missiles essentially.

..It's still better than the Tandy 200 laptop I used before I had the PET though. ...

I have no experience with Atari computers. Do they use the SIO port for serial?

BBS'd on a Tandy 100 for several years.   Granted only a few times with the what... 40x20 screen?   Most of the times it was on a 80x24 screen on the docking station.  :D   Ascii, no Ansi, but still worked great.

Atari ST has a serial port, pretty standard stuff.  Good Ansi, 80x24.   Most term programs have like 4 to 16 color.

Atari 8-bit you most of the time used the SIO to a serial interface and from that to the modem.   Worked pretty good.  Was a strong 40 column machine, but various term programs made 80 column possible with increasing better ANSI and color over the years using various tricks.   One fun thing on one term program... activating macros with a joystick!   Great when playing online games with North, south, East, and west... and attack!  :D   You could program the joystick macros to whatever.  (This was Bobterm for those wondering.)

  4. I have to agree about cool things showing up.   Of course, it seems like generally something like 15 years and secrets and protos come out of the woodwork.   At least I've seen that with the Jaguar.  So... wanna see two more cool things that surfaced from those drives?

So they found a copy of Ninjabreadman with the Zool placeholders in the upper left hand corner.

And Myth Maker with the Zool placeholder.

I think the really cool thing about the Zool proto is that it looks like it had all the worlds of NinjaBreadman, Anubis, Myth Maker, that toy world one all rolled into one.  One of the biggest complaints about the game is how short the game is.  With all those levels it might have sucked but at least have been a longer game to play.

I'm fascinated by the Zool 3D idea, and glad it didn't happen.   But I want a copy of the prototype all the same.

    OMG, a BBS?

I haven't called a BBS since the 90s. Do you have Usurper, Trade Wars 2002, and LoRD on there?

Call one of those numbers, use the word "prison" for the name and password, goes to a BBS with LORD, a Trade Wars server, and I'm pretty sure Usurper and a few other dozen games.

    2 hours ago, Sauron said:

IIRC, he's running the BBS on an Atari ST, so probably not.

They have this dungeon crawl game that I really like.   Actually some unique BBS games, being Atari ST, that you don't see anywhere else.

Wish I still had my Commodore PET to dial into the BBS with... I have to use an emulator!

Now that would be cool.   I had a Commodore SX=64 for a while.  Wanted to BBS on it, but I'm pretty much an Atari user.  Need to get my Atari 400 back on the BBSs.

Do you have the Game Gear and Genesis versions? They are solid games. The Game Gear takes the Zool zoom-in challenge to its most preposterous extreme ;)

I would love to play it on Game Gear.   I heard it is good, but I get what you're saying, Zool probably takes up most of the screen.  🤣

Have you heard of Ninja Bread Man?

This (terrible) game was built of an unused prototype for a 3D Zool Game that Gremlin rejected. There are a few left over assets still in the game like the winged hearts that come out of the enemies. There is a familiar bumble bee enemy too.

Nothing of the actual Zool prototype has been seen accept the original pitch trailer which shows a level with the asthetics of the first stage of Ninja Bread Man.

I love that intro.  I recently translated what was on the mini-computer:

    "Zoel

Raol’s farces have overmvr Znui and five other kh worlds.

    Mission:

To destroy ryol’s armies and return.

No attempt can be made to rescue you while the veatex

    Good luck

    HQ."

Yeh seeing Zool animated in that intro is pretty fun.

Loved the speed run video.   Along with the other Zool elements you mentioned (heart, bees, candy level) I think it is funny how there is this sci-fi teleporter for no reason at all...

Over on the Zool wiki there is talk of various Zool projects where other games from DDI used other levels from the Zool game to make other cheap and terrible games.

Speaking of DDI a bunch of hard drives were found from the DDI development group by Obscure Gamers.   Looks like there was a Zool 3D prototype in there....   :)

Ok, I'll counter that statement with that M.U.L.E. is eight bit perfection as well. :D

Yeh seen the intro many times and kept it on in the background as I did stuff.   Loved a lot of the characters that Electronic Arts did from that game, Archon, and game I played a lot: Murder on the Zinderneuf.   I'm sure once I give M.U.L.E. more of a chance I'd like it.   Just hasn't grabbed me in the times I tried.

Out of those we've played in the HSC in recent years, the ones I remember liking the least were .. (drum roll) .. Star Raiders and The Last Starfighter....

It's ok for everyone to have opinions, even if they are wrong.   :P   j/k

Star Raiders... that is eight bit perfection right there.   Can't even play devil's advocate on that one, and I normally can to see another side.  But different strokes for different folks.    You are probably used to Elite on the Commodore 64 which was an awesome game, and released in late 1984.   Star Raiders was released in 1979.  😮

Last Starfighter, I think because it was also labeled a "Star Raiders II" lacked the 360 degree immersive world.  But had other good elements, graphics, and ideas.  A good Last Starfighter movie game, but no Star Raiders.

Reload time on Castle Wolfenstein... ok, now you're reminding me of some childhood pain.

  10. Castle Wolfenstein is a great game of exploration and evasion.   To find a uniform off a guard or chest, and equip with weapons.  Then it becomes all about avoiding the SS that seem to recognize you if you are in inform or not.   Played that game for hours.

Game I don't like?   Plenty of them.   I think M.U.L.E. is one that many raved about that I just couldn't get into.   Cute game though.

Many, many others I don't play.  Maybe most of them.  :P    But just so happens I have Blue Max on a cart and I've played it a lot recently.  Not with gravity, that was new.

I like the idea of selling an SD for the JagGD with custom label and other physical items.

I like that too.  Having little SD cards for the Atari Jaguar.   How sheik and Nintendo Switch like!!

And one day when my two year wait for a Game Drive wraps up and I get one I might think about that option.

No on CD. Let the toilet die.

The Game Drive is showing promise to do that.   Over time as those that want a GD are given the chance to buy them, and when the CD support is fully established, that might just happen.   Finger's crossed!  :D

Jaguar and CD unit makes a good hovercraft.   Add a regular cartridge at the top of the two and it makes a good toilet.

...No meaningful progress on a cartridge version, and FYI having a traditional cart would most likely not include music. ...

Really excited about this Songbird.   I would love to have Battlemorph on cart that I could just pop in and play.   I think without music it would be great as Cybermorph also does not have music.  And Cybermorph is a regular play for me.

Also want to get the soundtrack.   And if there was any way to make it where the cart version could cue CD tracks from the sound track (or from whatever CD you put in) that would be awesome.

As for another Battlemorph CD, sure, could use another copy.  But really want Battlemorph on cart.

I read on Wikipedia that the first (?) school bus was constructed in 1915 and funding of school buses in the US took place in 1919. If Blue Max takes place during WW1, it means whoever put school buses on the road were true pioneers in the field, whether those are used to transport children or camouflage for enemy soldier transports.

Huh, that is interesting.   Luckily for us we are not used to school buses yet... historically speaking.

Don't forget - if you've never played this game before, you should definitely try bombing your own (friendly) hangar at least one time, just to see what happens. But... don't do it during a good run. 😋

Also, a tip: if you're ever running out of fuel, climb as high as you can before it runs out. Once the fuel is at 0, you can descend, but not climb. I've coasted to a successful runway landing with dead engines at least once in my life...

All that is great advice.   I do like how in the game there is this rivalry that goes on between you and the other pilots.  You bomb their hangar, they bomb yours, a lot of fun.

And I have literally also glided onto the runway with no fuel.   Interestingly, if you are on the earlier passes at least and you haven't taken damage, generally you use less than 150 units of fuel, which means you can make two passes without refueling.

Lastly, I don't know how I felt about bombing the school bus.  Kind of sick to put that in the game.  😈

Hahah... make sense to hear this from "De'Teacher".   There were times I wondered if they would deduct points for civilians.    But this is war, not a police academy.   But I have thought of it, and MOST of the time tried to time bombing runs to hit the bridge after the bus passed.

Time for a covert night mission....

Just a heads up though, I do think everyone removing their side USB ports is going to regret it later this year. I'm working on something for them.

Good!   (Checks carts)  yeh I have one Skunkboard that still has them.

I didn't need to carve up my cartridge, only remove the extra USB "ears" on the first version.
I believe subsequent versions didn't have those, so maybe it's already an option - and v2 onwards had little PCB "ears" to help mounting.

Yeh that's true.  The later versions I got without the USB ports I was able to fit into a regular case.  Just had to pop it open every time I flashed it, but if you plan on playing a game for a while (like I did with Midnight Resistance and other games I playtested) the solution worked great.
