Have we ever posted something from Facebook? Maybe not. So today is a first for the Bubsy Bobcat Fan blog. First off there is the title picture where we have this raft that looks like a coffin and instantly the thought came up of Bubsy 3d: Bubsy visits the James Turrell Retrospective

The parody is liked for a lot of reasons, one of them being they actually had better 3D controls than the Bubsy 3D from 1995. The parody was liked so much that it was even referenced in another Bubsy fan game for the 2600/5200/800/Vic 20 and C=64.

Anyway, now with the raft you can go "BOBsledding" or was it "BUBsledding"? Good stuff!

Also, there is one more picture from the internet. Every day there is a joke of the day, which is set for all to see as public feature. One of the days a joke was posted there was a response from Michael Berlyn himself...

So lots of fun on Facebook. Time to catch the wave and go BUBsledding!!

Here's wishing a great 4th of July to an American game mascot and all the fans and others who make Bubsy famous and infamous!

And some Bubsy fireworks at the end of this video from Arkane Kids...

    Thirteenth (13th) Leader BBS

13th Leader is a reboot of an 8-bit Atari 800 XL BBS from back in the late 1980’s! Originally hosted out of Hamilton Ontario Canada! Back in the 80’s we ran on 8-bit “Home Grown” BBS software on 2 x 5.24 floppy drives. Still hosted in Southern Ontario but now on an Ubuntu LXD container running Mystic BBS. New users are always welcome!

A reboot of a ATARI BBS?!! Nice!!

Some good starting message activity. Actually enjoyed that because there is a lot of conversations about the Atari 8-bit there and other talk. Check it out! Hard Core BBS

    Which, Quit, or [1]:

So I sent a message. It is nice when you have the control keys and live editing. I had this in Wildcat mode so maybe that had something to do with it.

There were two messages in the freedom of speech area, so I checked them out. And I've decided going forward, especially from this visit, that what is said on a BBS needs to stay there. But saying that for a new BBS they had messages, and so we'll see how this goes.

Sounds promising. I like the idea of old BBS craziness! Love the name. The telnet address defaults to port 23... I bet that gets a lot of hits from Chinese spammers.

So this was a C=64 C-Net BBS. My favorite BBS software of all time since that was what I used on the Unknown BBS back in the 80s.
So from there to Amiga 3000 and then to a Winserver. The future is a "old school with a touch of today." Sounds good.

250 games with 6 discs of PD software for downloading. Nice!

Local message base had four messages on it. First message May 29th. Tried to reply but I guess I need to be validated. Fine.

Looks like this sysop has alternate set ups going...

Four new BBSs down, 16 more to go.

So this time last year we had the speculation that Bubsy was in Sonic Forces.

Where there is a will, there is a way. Thanks to Zerosp0nge there is a hack that replaces the Sanic shirts with all three variations of Bubsy's trademark shirt. Apparently in the story, at least according the early advertisements for the game, there would be a new friend and ally helping Sonic. Originally this new ally had an outline much like Bubsy. Once you slap a Bubsy shirt on this character it really does look a lot like the Bubster.

Anyway, the pictures from the game are great. I loved how they had the yellow Atari Jaguar version as an option. I mean, why not?

I think I want to get Sonic Forces now. Hmmm... which game systems is Sonic Forces on?

According to wiki: "Sonic Forces. Sonic Forces is a platform game developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega. Produced in commemoration of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise's twenty-fifth anniversary, it was released for Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One in November 2017."

Alright, I can have two Bubsy games on my PS4. Then again, not sure if this hack will work on all the versions, would need a little more tinkering. But LOVE IT!!

The original entry of the shirt hack can be found here:

Wow 2017 was one hell of a ride for Bubsy fans. A new release of a Bubsy game for the first time in the whole existence of the Bubsy Fan Blog (since 2008). And the twitter feed with none other than Bubsy chiming in, chats with "Bubsy", so much material there.

Also the Bubsy fan group "Bubsy Nation" became a term!

In the last year we saw a new speedrun milestone for Fractured Furry Tales of 36m 25s by KowalLazy. Congratulations KowalLazy!!

In the last year the Bubsy Wiki was also launched with a number (that we will hopefully laugh at later looking back at this ) of 85 articles. Looking good! I'm glad to say the Bubsy Fan Blog has been asked to be a part of the wiki development.

So as the twitter feed starts to quiet down, there was one last tweet from the Bubster:

Hopefully we'll hear more from Bubsy in the future. Of Woolie's Strike Back I think above all people agreed this was a step in the right direction, the character has been re-introduced to people in a positive way, so time to keep this momentum going.

    Other news:
Bubsy Nation T-Shirts available again on Amazon.

Bubsy: Kitt'N Kaboodle has been released for the Vic 20.

    Bubsy-V20-R2.crt.zip

Sometime ago when I started playing with the Atari Flashback Portable I joked about hacking Fast Eddie into a Bubsy game so I could have a Bubsy game to play on the go for the Atari 2600. That version turned out great, and it's been fun hacking the Atari computer roms (800/5200) and now the Vic 20. Just as Bubsy is fairly infamous for video game mascots, it has been fun getting the Bubster on older platforms.

A respectful tribute of the character, and all the time giving a nod to the current Bubsy game to give some free press.

Some have asked if I will sell cartridges of all these hacks. What I think would be hilarious is if Accolade was able to publish a limited release of these hacks through Atariage and have them officially added to the Bubsy mythology. Just sayin'.

BUBSY... OFFICAILLY RELEASE FOR THE ATARI 2600 and Vic 20 just 37 years after their hayday.

(Wow.. Fast Eddie (original game hacked is 36 years old as of 2018?)

Of course while I am perfectly fine (for the sake of Bubsy fandom and the irony of it all) to publish my fan hacks (just send me a copy and we'll call it squares) there is Sirius Software who originally wrote Fast Eddie. So there is that to be worked out.

At some point I really would like to hack the Fast Eddie for the Commodore 64. That is an amazing version of which Hack-O-Matic (that I used to hack the other four versions) sees nothing but gibberish. So hopefully time and input from the gaming community will reveal a solution for that in time.

In the meantime, the Bubsy Fan Blog has given a quick view of the Woolies Strike Back, and the other parts should be made soon..

    Talk more soon!

Finally the review you've all been waiting for: the review of Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back by Bubsy fans for Bubsy fans! How does this new game compare to previous Bubsy games, how does it rank (by the reviewer's humble opinion), and what are the challenges faced in collecting all the items/yarnballs? Talks about the levels between the tutorial and the first boss level.

Well if I didn't already have these two games on Steam would be a pretty good deal. Basically Two-Fur for free and a few dollars off Woolies Strike Back.
  10. doctorclu
So for a long time Bubsy fan like myself the joy was all the hype of the new game being released, seeing Bubsy fans respond, and "Bubsy" on the twitter feed responding back. The twitter activity that was probably inspired by the "Sonic" (Played by a Sega employee) on the Sonic twitter channel probably inspired Accolade. And to me it made all the difference getting to interact with the character.

So let's start with the expected news, what are the non-Bubsy fans saying? Well, let's take a look...

    telegamemaster
"Kinda digging it." & "So responsive. That is what impresses me"

"Hit detection is ok.." "No glitching"
Complaint: Length (too short) and difficulty (Too many marker points)
Expected more than what we got. Wanted more worlds for the price tag.
    Gave a 4 out of 10.

    IGN
Liked the double jump with glide
    Fall damage is gone.
    Annoying enemy placement.
    Only 14 levels?
    Rated a 4.5

    Laser Time
They had a love for the old Bubsy games.
"Sonic is to Halo what Bubsy is to Killzone."
"you can't have a good Sonic without a good Bubsy"
"An example that America has too much money"
    "Worth every penny"
    "Pretty fun for $30 bucks"

Other reviews peg Bubsy at around 4 to maybe 5.

So here are the average good points of all the reviews I read:
    *It's a competent platformer
    *Hardly any glitches
    *Nice to see
    *Fun game
    *Best Bubsy game yet
*Bubsy does not talk too much (and you can adjust the rate Bubsy talks.

    And the bad points:
    * Platforms you jump on are the same platforms basically through the whole game.
    * Enemies are annoyingly placed.
    * Too many markers.
    And the biggest complaint...
    * Too short.

That is what I hear the most is how short the game is with only 14 levels.

So in a moment, I'll give MY review of the new Bubsy, but first, some reviews of the fans and other good Bubsy comments...

So been loving all that, but now...

    DOCTOR CLU'S REVIEW OF
    BUBSY THE WOOLIES STRIKE BACK

    Love it. Of course.

I have seen so many Bubsy concepts of what a continuation of Bubsy would be. Also heard many music interpretations. So which would I have gone with? Well, the Bubsy in the flying suit made some sense, and my favorite fan music was "Return of the Bobcat" and I like the song "A Hole Lot of Magic". Love it. Honestly, this game, to me, blew all my expectations away I love all you fans, just saying I really really like what they made here.

So let me break it down:

The voice: Love it. Sounds like Bubsy, not as annoying as the Bubsy 3D, maybe easier to listen to than the original Bubsy voice. One could say a Bubsy a bit grown up? Just turn down the rate Bubsy talks or he will tend to repeat the phrases fairly quick.

The Music/soundtrack: has a retro mod/Amiga feel to it. I thought.

Backgound: Beautiful, as said Laser Time said, a nice homage to the Southwest.

    Gameplay: Honestly fun for me.
Glide: Is a neat ability how you can drift down. Still the best way to take out a Woolie.
Pounce: A FUN new ability. Can ram through walls. Supposedly the way to take out Woolies, but so far I tend to die like 40% of the time when I use it against Woolies.
jump: Is jump. Always best paired with glide.
Climbing is a new fun ability.

    Comparison thoughts...

    * I like how the Woolies lay around after you pounce them. They don't just go poof.
    * Like how the shield shirt stays with you till you are hit. Nice solution to the one hit kills you problem.
    * What is new is how when you hit a Woolie and you hold down glide you loose your glide. You can hit the glide again and Bubsy climbs up a bit for extended glide, just that this is a bit different.
    * Woolies don't stay down. One thing I always like about Bubsy was you returned to the last marker point with all prior enemies you took out still gone. Now you return to a marker with Woolies returned all around you.

That is basically it. The game has been the type of fun where I find myself wanting to go back and play more of the game. I listen to the soundtrack in the car. As a fan, a very happy time for me.

I'd say if you're a fan of Bubsy, you'll get a lot of good nuggets out of this.

As a game, I think this is something good to give to a friend for their kids.

Yep, like many kids of the 90's that grew up with the first Bubsy game, and good memories, so I think kids of today will like this game.

So if I was to give this a score and this is based on fun, and what I believe this game could be, and fan material, how about an 82% out of 100% or 8.2 out of ten.

It is a fun game. I think all the hype, the twitter feed leading up to the game, the marketing would raise this score to an 86%.

Here is what I would like to see...

    1) more variances in the appearance of the Woolies.
    2) a bit more story?
    3) Packages that people who buy the game can download to add more levels <---- would raise it 10%
    4) A level creator that fans can download to make OTHER levels that owners of the game can put online for download. And with that, ways to import different music. Make hell levels with some Slayer!! Yeh!
    5) More variance in the platforms you jump on.
    6) The ability to zoom in so you don't see as much of the screen for those that like a feel like the 90's game and those cheap off screen enemies.

Ok, that is all for now. More Bubsy news coming up, in the meantime, take advantage of that 34% sale on steam. Like buying the game for $10 and the soundtrack for the other $10.

First off, 10 am PST October 30th will start the 24 hours of Bubsy answering questions. This should get interesting!

Secondly, Do You Know Gaming has released a very informative video on Bubsy. They approached us at the Bubsy Fan Blog on it not too long ago to use materials from the Bubsy Fan Blog, and in the end added even more information. Well done guys!

And finally, today I got my PS4 to play one of my copies of Bubsy! So as soon as I get my regular or purrfect edition I will have reviews and pictures.

See everyone at the 24 hour question session with Bubsy this Monday!!

    --------------

I will leave you with this epic Bubsy / Wolfenstein picture from the twitter feed as both are being released around the same date.

I feel like I did when New Horizons whizzed past Pluto, or Cassino crashed into Saturn. So much data collected that will be reviewed for years.

And as Bubsy fans in the final days before Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back there is a blur of activity on Twitter of hundreds of Bubsy fans (really not kidding, see for yourself...) writing in that we will be quoting some of the best quips for months to come.

But why not join in the fun while it lasts? "Bubsy" (or someone playing as Bubsy from Accolade/Black Forest) will be answering questions on Twitter clear up till October 31st! Some of the answers have been hilarious.

    Also activity on #BubsyNation, @BlackForestTeam, @BubsyThe_Bobcat.

And there is a new Bubsy trailer!

    ------------------------------------

So my life has been fun tracking the Bubsy activity, work, other events, and.. learning how to hack rom images on the Atari VCS/2600. It has been the project that I think I am done, then I look at and say "well let me try this..." and 10 revisions later (that were released, about 50 on my hard drive) it went from looking like the original "Fast Eddie" rom...

To what it looks like now...

Now to see if I can learn how to hack sound.

    More Bubsy news soon!

With the recent advertisements with the usual Bubsy red exclamation mark, and later with the black shield shirt, I decided to have a little fun with gimp and make the yellow exclamation mark shirt from Fractured Furry Tales as seen off to the side.

One could argue that the the fairy tales were fractured, even including Bubsy's shirt. At the beginning of the game his shirt is yellow and all intro show a yellow exclamation mark. At the end of the game in the final closing scene the exclamation mark is red again. Makes sense.

Real world story, the yellow was a null color field that would turn red or green depending on if you were player one or player two. The programmers that started with the original Bubsy 1 code when making Fractured Furry Tales, while they created a whole new fun Bubsy game, didn't turn on this feature. So the field remains the null yellow color.

    -----------------------------

So Bubsy shenanigans on Twitter, Steam, and Facebook, with announcements on the official Bubsy page.

And if you hear of other events, let me know. And of course plenty of Bubsy news right here on the Bubsy Fan Blog.

Not much activity on Facebook honestly. Truly is becoming the old person's media.

Instagram has the same 10 to 11 posts that have been there the whole time.

The Linked IN page for Bubsy is a fun shout out to the character:

So all this is good, a lot of activity on Twitter and Steam.

Alright, we've had some fan art show up on the Bubsy twitter feed. So here are what some of the Bubsy fans have submitted...

And that last bit of art was the fan art that start the above trend going on Twitter.

Probably should mention there is are discussion going on in the Woolies Strike Back area on Steam

Here is what it looks like today...

MANY discussions in the Bubsy Two-Fur area... wow! (though some are quite old...)

And a lot of Bubsy art also in the Two-Fur area.

For completeness I'll mention this Bubsy fan club on steam that has like... 6 members.

And there are a lot of comments on Bubsy's own page on steam.

So we'll see what happens in the last 14 days before launch!

    Later fellow Bubsy fans!

So Bubsy saying he likes tacos. Never had a doubt that someone like Bubsy would like Tacos. Or Pizza, or anything else for that matter.

I enjoyed National Taco Day. First time to visit Fuzzy's Tacos and they have seven different tacos for $1 a piece. My wife and I tried a little of each. Excellent tacos with the ground beef taco being my favorite of the bunch with others like Pork, the veggie taco and a few others being also really good.

Have to say though, seven different types of tacos did not play well together in the hours that followed.

WORTH IT!! Bubsy Bubsy Bub Bub!!!

So a week or so ago Flatzone contacted me about some Bubsy facts and if they could use some clips from my Fractured Furry Tales Speedrun videos. No problem on the speedrun videos was my answer, and as for the facts they were looking for the weight and height of Bubsy Bobcat.

I poured through the information I had and just like those at Flatzone I couldn't find the height and weight of Bubsy either, so I turned to the best source on Bubsy, the creator of the character, Michael Berlyn.

With that information, and other information that Flatzone was able to compile, the strengths and weaknesses of Gex and Bubsy were determined and animated into a AWESOME fight.

You have to check it out...

And it was a joy to see that Michael and I were credited at the end of this tribute to these two game characters:

    ---------------------------
    Thoughts on this:
Loved it of course. Just some thoughts on Gex.

It is interesting to me how much people bag on Bubsy. One thing that this video, and the comments of this video, helped me realize is that Bubsy is the Deadpool of the video game mascots...

It is true. Bubsy is obnoxious, full of himself, sometimes funny, sometimes not funny, but always looking into the screen, knocking on the screen, and finding ways to talk to break through the 4th wall. Maybe that is why I like this character so much.

So back to Gex. In all points Gex should be a more likeable character. At least a more powerful character or even "successful" character. This was played on as Gex took over the PixelChat show shortly after Bubsy was let go as the previous talk show host:

    http://pixelchat.kerda.com/exodus_3.htm

Ultimately, this video made me like Bubsy even more (is that even possible) and like Gex even less. And it was simply the stories for these characters in their game manuals. Bubsy is strangely more relatable while Gex is just slimey. Probably ok that Gex is slimey since he is a reptile after all.

Great video guys and until next time,

    Your Bubsy blogger since 2008,

    Doctor Clu

    -----------------------------

Update (and on my birthday no less) Bubsy "himself" replies!!

And I caught what people had to say after that...

So apparently enough people vouched for Bubsy on Twitter and he is verified. And apparently it was a few thousand people.

I have no idea what just happened, but cool there are that many that verify Bubsy.
  17. doctorclu
Adding to the tactile experience, here is where you can have a device to connect to Android phones. This borrows the screen to play the Gameboy and Gameboy Color games. No Advance games yet that I'm aware of. Still pretty cool.
  18. doctorclu
So I was cruising the web, how this always starts, and I saw the cutest Bubsy figure here...

    https://www.etsy.com/listing/515344010/bubsy-bobcat-3-hand-sculpted-figurine?ref=market

Was only like $13 or so. (plus like $6 shipping)

The figure came in today, so here is how this looks in my hand to shore a bit more scale..

Consider how short Bubsy is, probably the right scale next to a Star Wars figure.

    Kinda cool!
