  1. Sorry in advance for the long post - here is my summary of the show this year:

I had a lot of fun this year! I picked up Roof Pooper and The Chicago basement, along with filling in a few missing titles from my Atari 2600 Activision collection (I finally found a copy of pressure cooker with a label that was still legible even with all of the actiplaque!)

The museum area was Amazing this year, but the arcade was a bit lacking. It was still fun to see all of the new pinball tables and really cool to see that head to head joust table, but it felt really toned down compared to previous years.

Over all I would say that last year was a better show, but this year was more fun because I actually got to talk to more people that I wanted to (Philo Barnhart was really fun to talk to, Brian Colin is always great, I finally got to meet Eugene Jarvis...).

I loved playing robotron at the pie factory table, and I am really enjoying the new book from William Pepper of Atari Bytes.

  2. I couldn't find any topics about this in the forums - I'm hoping that someone has experience with this:

The PS2 slim laser seems to burn out frequently. I recently heard about a fix called the matrix PIC fix. My understanding is that it is a pic microcontroller that monitors the communication with the laser. If it detects that the communication has crashed and the laser is stuck on - it shuts down the console.

Does anyone here have experience with this mod?

Does it actually save your hardware?

Can you still buy the kit?

My slim has been through 2 lasers so far and while they are cheap at the moment - they won't always be!

  3. I made it out - I got to meet Inky and Dauber, and i got to play a round of Atari 5200 Kaboom!. I really liked the twist of having one player play the bomber and the other play the bucket. :)

I liked the new venue, but it was really hard to find the panels on time. Having it split over two floors made it tough to navigate. I also felt that there wasn't good food options on site. We found a mall food court a block or two away, but it didn't have a very good selection either.

The new vendor hall was great. Everyone had a lot of space, but I did hear a couple of vendors complain about how their loading and unloading was disorganized and difficult.

The pinball room and museum were combined and I liked the new layout a lot.

The arcades were hard to navigate on Saturday - it would be nice if galloping ghost could find a better way to layout their room. Brian Colin's table was in an awkward place and it was hard to get through to play the games.

I loved the indie developer room - I really liked being able to talk to the developers and get the inside story on their games.

Overall it was a lot of fun and I like the new venue. I'm glad that I took the mega bus instead of driving myself.

Unfortunately, no. That's the one platform that I never had a physical cart release for. I'll probably have my GBA with Anguna on it out to demo, but I don't have stock of any GBA carts to sell right now.

That's too bad - it's a really fun game. I'll still keep an eye out for your table at the show :)

  5. I'm planning to be there! I'll probably be sitting at a booth in the NES homebrew area most of the time, although I'll probably try bring along my VCS 4-player adapter prototype also, in case I get a chance to show it off.

Will you have any physical copies of Anguna for the DS on hand?

  6. I'm going for Saturday and Sunday. I couldn't talk any of my friends into getting the Friday tickets, so I skipped it as well... Even though we are all heading there Friday anyway.

Since it is in Milwaukee this year I am going to try the Mega Bus (from Minneapolis). I have taken it to Chicago before and it wasn't a bad ride - beats driving.

  7. I will not usually buy sealed games. For me the whole point is to play the games and when I happen across a sealed game I really don't want to open it. I don't see the point in owning it as a shelf decoration so I usually will pass on them - even if they are really cheap.

I will buy boxes and manual for games that I really like, but mostly I just go after carts and hardware.

  8. Interesting - I see that they advertise a ProLine controller for the Atari 2600. (Page 544)

"Pro-line space-age joystick by Atari is fun to use with quick-throw control knob for greater maneuverability and fast-action side trigger-style fue button. For use with Atari 2600 game (A). 67 G 94171-Ship. wt. 9 oz."

I thought that those were new when the 7800 was released.

  9. I'm glad you liked it. I'll have it VCF Midewest as well.

Did you see the Asteroids clone I had running on it? I think it's an amazing version. I need to make a new copy of Kilopede (Centipede clone) as my tape seems to be bad. That's my favorite Sorcerer game at the moment.

No - I only got to play around with Defender. I should have have spent more time in the museum room, but there was just too much Pinball that needed to be played :)

  10. Can you bring your Zenith green screen for my Sorcerer? I still want to get that off you somehow. :)

I'll probably be bringing the following (based on room)

    Videobrain

    Sorcerer

    Arcadia 2001

    MSX 2+

SV-328 (I have MUCH better games for it this year)

I just wanted to say thanks for bringing that Exidy Sorcerer! I really enjoyed playing around with it. I was surprised at how playable Defender (or defender clone?) was on it! That and the TRS-80 setup on the middle ring of tables were definitely the highlights of the museum room for me this year.

  11. Just now getting into this sort of thing and am wondering if anyone could explain to me what the function of those resistors are? I know what the component is, I just mean what their effect is with the controller. I'm trying to cobble together a design that will let me install a switch or two for Colecovision compatibility and want to make sure I understand everything I'm seeing before I get too far.

That is a great question! I wonder if it has to do with pins 5 and 9 being the paddle controller pins from the atari 2600. They go through a resistor to ground or, when the button is pressed, they connect to pin 6.

  12. I would recommend the Retro Freak over the Retron 5 honesty. I think it has a nicer interface, it has the same adapter for game gear, and it also supports tg-16 and pc engine, however you do need a converter for NES.

Me too. The Retro Freak is more expensive, but you also don't have to hack it in any way to run ROMs. It's also compatible with more systems.

Honestly, I hadn't heard of the Retro freak before. Is there a thread about it somewhere around here? (I am still kind of new to the forums)

I have been looking up some youtube reviews for it and it has definitely piqued my interest.

  13.

I'm not knocking your selection of Sky Jinks but what causes it to be in your Top 10? I'm wondering if I haven't given it a fair chance.

I find the game relaxing, but still challenging. I think that is why I go back to it so often. Honestly, I probably wouldn't feel the same way about it if I hadn't played it so much back in the day, but as it is - I consider it a staple of my collection.

  14. I find the high score self-challenge much more rewarding than finishing a story.

Not that I don't enjoy the cinematic masterpieces that are modern games, but it is not as rewarding to me as breaking my previous high score on Solar Fox or PacMan.

The other aspect that really drew me back into retro gaming is the hardware. They had some really cool and unique hardware and had to use some really creative programming solutions to push that hardware to the absolute limit. These days the PS4 and XBone are nearly identical gaming PCs, and less interesting (to me, at least)

  15. Hyperkin sent me a review unit for the 3-in-1 Game Gear and Master System adapter. Here is my review:

** All of the footage in this video was captured by me using an Elgato Game Capture HD at 30fps.

    Thanks for the great review!

I have been waiting for a good way to play Game Gear games on a regular TV since I bought one new back in the day :)

One question - can you toggle the FM sound on master system- or is it just always on?
