  1. Hey folks!

Stopped over at a video game store that was closing down by me and I discovered an Atari Jaguar folder, brought in from the owner's house that I packed up for a $1.25. In side of it was a bunch of press releases and an Atari Jaguar newsletter. I put together a video of what was in it, but I also had an opportunity to scan most of the stuff in it. Some of this stuff I found on the web already, so I don't know if any of it hasn't been discovered before. I thought it was a cool historical find, for me anyway and I thought I'd share it. Here's a link to the scans and the video I was talking about below: https://drive.google.com/file/d/16D_mjnM4M0oM8c31F3HXwCLDSprc04IH/view?usp=sharing

  2. Fired up Forbidden Forest again during the long weekend and finally figured out the trick to beating the Demogorgon! I never realized that you can see the shadow of his claws in the bushes. Once I figured that out I was able to get a better idea of where he was and nail him. I ended up recording it for my channel, but I can't believe it took me 30 years to realize the trick!

  3.

Most favorite games from back in the day:

    • Gyruss (My favorite game on any platform. The C64 version is quite good.)
    • Master Of The Lamps
    • Commando
    • Archon
    • Jumpman

    Honorable mention:

    • Pitfall II
    • M.U.L.E.

Agreed on Gyruss! This was the first version I played and I enjoyed it over any other version. I may have to fire that up tonight!

  4. I received my SD2IEC over the weekend, so I had a few hours to catch up on some classics. I mostly played Bruce Lee and Forbidden Forest, but I also loaded up Choplifter and had an instant flashback of the insane amount of hours I played on it. I finally wrapped up Persona 5 last night, so I can really dive into the system again now.

  5. Ah, yes, Castle Wolfenstein - I used to play it together with a buddy, one of us would steer the guy around with the joystick and the other would use the keyboard to shoot, open chests etc. I remember how we almost shat our pants the first time an SS-trooper charged into the room yelling at us - fun times :)

To be honest I never completed it either before the internet days, mainly because I didn't know how to obtain additional snoozes in those coderooms with the musical checkerboards on the wall. These were vital though as I had the NTSC-version of the game which would bug on my PAL C64 and make my die for no reason if I didn't freeze the robots right after entering certain rooms. Despite that bug I still think it's an excellently designed game with a good mix of action and puzzle elements and enough randomness to give it some replay value.

In case you didn't know it already: you can shoot at those boxes to speed things up. Just be careful not to pour too many bullets into chests full of grenades or you may blow up the entire castle :)

Ah! I did not know that! When I was a kid I blamed the slow discover on the speed of the disk drive. LOL

  6. I haven't got to enjoy my C64 as much as I would like but now I am single again... :D

Having said that I haven't experienced it much, I'm surprised there hasn't been any love for Maniac Mansion. The little I've played of that was impressive and im sure to get into it soon. I have played Super Breadbox a bit which is great. I also can kind of give the thumbs up for Castle Wolfenstein which I DID actually play back in the day, only on apple IIe.

I absolutely love Maniac Mansion, but the first version I played it on was the NES. I know the script and some graphics had to get cut from the original version, but I still really love it. I can't recall what version of Maniac Mansion was hidden in Day of the Tentacle but I have played and completed that as well.

  7.

See, 5 is impossible. "Top of my head" I "forgot" about Space Taxi, Castle Wolfenstein, etc. All super fun. I definitely loved the games with speech just a bit more than many of the games without it.

I loved Impossible Mission too - in fact, it was the first game I bought when I got a disk drive (it was between that and Bruce Lee!) - but I was never able to beat it, so it doesn't stay in my personal top 5.

When we re-acquired a C64 in the early 90's, Wolfenstein was a game I often played a lot. Another great example of speech in a video game. The only thing that bugged me was how long it took to search for items in boxes or however else you found items.

A few years later when I saw Wolfenstein 3D in a Best Buy for the first time on a IBM PC, I quickly realized that it was a adaption of the C64 and became glued to it.

  8.

I'm with you. That too was the first version of the game I played and a brilliant conversion, particularly for such an early title. I had a similar love grow for Pooyan thanks to the C-64 port. Both arcade games are now my two favorites.

Pooyan was another as well! I completely forgot about the game until I started playing Famicom games and found a port of it on the system! I'll have to fire that one up as well on the C64.

  9. Tough to come up with just 5, but absolute top of my head:

    - Raid on Bungeling Bay

    - Satan's Hollow

    - Mancopter

    - Phantasie

    - Beach-Head II

Again, though, I'd probably struggle with working a dozen or so additional titles in there...

Satan's Hollow! Yes! Another favorite of mine. The C64 version was the first version of that game I played and I was glued to it. Anytime I run across the arcade version I have to play it. I regret not grabbing a cabinet of Satan's Hollow when it was cheaper.

  10. For those of you who played RPG's like Ultima, Bard's Tale and other RPGs, have you gone back to them and find they still hold up? I wouldn't play my first RPG until Dragon Warrior on the NES and going back to that years later I found that it was pretty hard to enjoy

  11. I’m finally getting back into the Commodore 64 after many years and was curious what everyone’s top 5 games were for the computer? I was very young when I played games on the C64, anywhere from 3 to 5 years old; but I loved every moment of it. Our unit eventually burned out due to someone spilling something in it, which was a sad day for us.

    My top 5:

    1. Forbidden Forest – This game terrified me, but I loved the game play, the music and the variety of monsters that came after you. The looming pressure of the final battle, always made me sweat; but I managed to beat it.

    2. Impossible Mission – Stay forever! The game’s digital speech captivated me as a little kid and made me question why more games didn’t have it when my parents got me a NES years later. I was never able to solve the puzzles and complete the game, but the platforming was enough to keep me entertained for hours on end.

    3. Bruce Lee – My dad was a martial artist and really looked up to Bruce Lee, so it was no surprise that he’d have a copy of a game that featured one of his influences. This was another one I could complete on my own, but I’d often have to play as the green sumo whenever my older sister wanted to play. The game was really more avoiding the enemies and traps then it was a fighting game, but my dad and I loved it.

    4. Raid Over Moscow – My dad and my sister sucked at this game! They could never get the fighter out of the space station and would often either hit a wall or get nailed by the door as it closed. I kept at the game until I could get every ship out and was able make it all the way to the very end of the game. I could never defeat the robot at the end though.

    5. Pit Stop 2 – I’m not a big racing fan, but the fact that you had to make “pit stops” to have your crew repair your tires and fuel your vehicle was a very cool concept to me. This feature put a lot a tension on players when they were competing head to head! This was another one I played a bunch of times with my sister.

    Honorable mentions:

    Conan

    Kung Fu Master

    Ninja

    Beach Head

  12.

That makes a lot of sense. :-)

I was 21 when the first one came out. I thought it was stupid fun, but it never really resonated with me. I think it's because I am old.

I was around 11 when the first Mortal Kombat came out and I felt the same way about it you did. I was and still am more of Street Fighter 2 guy. The flow of SF2 just seems better. To me anyways.

  14. Nice choices Mike.

Star Fox is a title that made me really made appreciate technology for what we had to offer in the early 90's. Such a great game that really made me think as a boy what other possibilities can we do with video games in the future. We were in for a wild ride that's for sure. :)

Thank you as always Mike. Keep up the great work as always bro. :)

    Anthony...

Thanks for always watching man! :)

  15. Refreshing to see/hear such a nice and calm video game reviewer for a change! :)

The SNES was a big part of my gaming life as a young adult in the early 90's and sometimes miss not having one today. Top 5 games for me might look something like this:

    Act Raiser

    Castlevania IV

    Contra III

NBA Jam (best, most playable version of them all IMO)

    Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts

Really want to place Chrono Trigger and FFIII up there, but when thinking replayability (which they sort of still do for RPG's, they're that friggin' good), have to give the nod to the others I'd still want to play. Might get bored trying to play an RPG today. Yeah, pretty sure of it. Military Strategy games I can still do, but RPG's not so much. Would rather listen to their soundtracks on the HiFi. :rolling:

Honorable mentions off the top of my head and used to play the living shit out of, include these:

    Super Mario IV

    Ken Griffey Jr. Baseball

MLBPA Baseball or Super Bases Loaded (forget which now)

    Rampart

    Pilot Wings

    Super R-Type

    Axelay

    Gradius III

Populous (though I played a lot on the Amiga, still liked this version)

    Super Smash TV

    Super Tennis

    Joe and Mac

    TMNT: IV

    Final Fight

    Mortal Kombat II

    Side Pocket

    Super Pinball Behind The Mask

Street Fighter II Turbo (excellent BITD but today, I prefer playing the PCE version)

    U.N. Squadron

Thank you! I always try to keep a calm demeanor in my videos as its what I prefer to watch as well. Too many angry people out there.

Just a few thoughts on your top 5:

Actraiser - What a great game! I loved the different elements the game provided. Both the simulation and action elements were fun and didn't seem like a chore. Fantastic music too.

Castlevania 4: I'm a huge Castlevania fan and just revisited 4 a few weeks ago. Challenging levels, great control and a soundtrack you could never forget.

Contra 3: I will never ever forget hearing the baseline from the first stage pumping out of a Super Nintendo display kiosk at Venture. This was one my little brother and I spent a ton of time playing together.

NBA Jam: My brother and I were both huge Bulls fans when the original NBA Jam came out and we played it like crazy. We'd often interject the commentary from the game into our real life street court games. Wish we had a 4 player adapter back then to play it!

Super Ghouls N Ghosts: I love the series, but now that I think about it I don't think I've ever really finished a game in this series! I may have to fix that before the end of the year!

Some great choices you've made for the honorable mentions too. I've had a great time with most of the ones you mentioned.

  16. This was a fun video to put together, though it was a bit time consuming. I was re-organizing my games this weekend and I thought it would be fun to choose my top 5 boxed SNES games from my library. It recalled a lot of fun memories as I went through them:

If you had to put together a top 5 of your boxed or loose SNES games in your library, what games would be in the list?

  17. I just revisited Dr. Chaos after a friend and I had a conversation about games that freaked us out when we were kids. I always found the intro to the game pretty creepy. The game itself had its freaky moments, but wasn't exactly stellar. Any else have some Dr. Chaos memories? I did eventually finish the game after a few rentals.

My video I just did of it:
