2. Hi,

I was trying to make the very best MenuGenerator with the very best rom data base.

It is probably out-of-date but you all can look at this

CC2ROMDB file

Also I made a MenuGenerator in Java and it is here:

Java MenuGenerator

Anyone is welcome to take this stuff and change it and claim credit for it.

I can try to add these to my DB. In my CC2ROMDB I put in the controller and the company for each rom, but my CC2ROMDB.txt will still work with the exe on Cuttle Cart 2 Site.

3. Are the '84 editions better made than the '87 ones? Also, I understand the expansion ports aren't connected on the board, but were there any plans for utilizing it? The same "add a disk drive/keyboard and turn your ProSystem into a home computer" ideas or something game related (i.e. external POKEY support or added RAM)?

960181

The 84 w/expansion port has been said to be more compatable then the 87 ones.

The exapansion port was mostly for a LaserDisc thing see: Atari History Museum's Atari 7800 Pro System page.

And if you have about an hour, listen to Steve Golson of GCC (the co that made the 7800) tell how the 7800 happened.

I loved it. Thanks Curt!

They do talk about the keyboard. The first proto was to hook to the cart slot (I think).

The final proto hooks up to joystick port #2.

Anyway read that page and it will answer all these questions.

4. Well I installed my Pokey chip and got sound from both Ballblazer and Commando, but still nothing from Frogger.  I did make sure to get the latest .bin. Could it be I chose the wrong bankswitching file?

954646

Does anyone know if this works for Frogger with sound?

7800: Frogger 10/07/05 (WIP)(uses Pokey) FROGR78 78HSCPOK HSCPOKQU

5. I think we need a FAQ for the CC2

How do d/l a newly created game and put it on my CC2 and play it?

Most people take their MENU.TXT file and add the new game entry to it and then they use the CC2MenuConverter program to take the MENU.TXT file and make a MENU.CC2 file.

If someone in the thread posts the CC2 settings ( the bankswitching and the startup) you should use them. Otherwise you will need to ask or try to figure them out on your own.

First, get the size of the rom file.

ect......

So let’s say you want to play the new Q*Bert, you would take your current MENU.txt file and add the new entry at the bottom (maybe) like this:

7800: Q*Bert WIP QBERT78 HSC_32K HSC

7800: Q*Bert WIP<tab>QBERT78<tab>HSC_32K<tab>HSC<tab>

run the CC2MenuConverter program on the MENU.txt file and then take the BIN file (and NOT THE a78 FILE) and rename it QBERT78.bin (to match the name in the entry above) and put it in the GAMES directory on your MMC card. Also put the new MENU.CC2 in the root of the MMC and you are ready to play.

6. okay for those exact english people, I ran out of space for a queston mark, for the person who doesnt get it I rewrote it, for those who think im a noob thats true

now then JUST AWNSER THE QUESTON, nothing funny ok?

for those who dont know what im trying to do, im planning to mod my atari fb2  so it can play atari games. Our friend ben (the guy with the cool portable website) used a 51/4 floppy drive for his portable, rather than looking for one or ordering one from best electronics, I know that fry's electronics probably has a 51/4 somwhere so, I wanted to go the faster route rather than waste a perfectly good atari 2600. Will it work?

935352

OK I think I got it! Here is what he is asking:

I have (or I can get) an old 5 ¼ inch floppy disk drive connecter with the ribbon cable. Can I use this connector instead of ordering a new 2600 cart connector + new ribbon cable, or cannibalizing an old 2600 just for the connector, to hack in a 2600 cartridge connector into my Flashback 2?

In other words, will an old 5 ¼ inch floppy disk drive connecter be used to put 2600 cartridges into?

It seems that Ben used one for one of his projects, see the picture above.

7. I was noticing that one of our newer members has an image from the 1982 Atari game catalogs as his avatar, and at that size, the image looks almost like a stylized picture of a "wizard" with outstretched arms -- in particular, the wizard from the Brain Games artwork.

Anybody else with me on this?

935526

At first glance, I thought it was a samurai out-fit.

(the avatar picture is a bit smaller, so it makes the chance of seeing things greater.)

8. well can it? thats what Ben used when he made the portable 2600; but can it be used for modding an fb2?

935352

No Benjamin J. Heckendorn has never used a 5 and 1/4 Floppy diskette to create a Porable Atari 2600.

But I think the main question is will Ben make a Portable 2600 out of the Flashback 2

because this would be a lot smaller

and a lot less power consuming product.

935549

you forgot something there Mot, I said FLOPPY DRIVE NOT FLOPPY DISK.

I liked the way that you added alll that information but you were talking about a diskette NOT A DRIVE.

935670

Well first off, I don’t think anyone truly knows what you are asking.

But if you have a FLOPPY DRIVE, you MUST use a FLOPPY DISK in the drive otherwise it will be good for nothing. Unless you are trying to say something to the effect: "Can parts from a 5 1/4 floppy disk drive be used for an Atari 2600 cartridge?”

And maybe you are thinking (like Retro Archaeologist had thought you where asking)

Can you use a 5 1/4 floppy disk drive type ribbon cable to add a Cartridge Port to your Flashback 2?

And if this is your question look at Hacking the Atari Flashback and particularly Page 3 for your answer.

And if you are still asking something else; please reword your question and we will be glad to answer it.

9. Now that nearly everyone who was willing to pay $200 for one already has, the supply exceeds the demand, so it's "worth" less.

934773

Perceived scarcity also plays an amazing role in determining prices. Someone else joked that as soon as Chad sells out, the things will sell for $300 on ebay. I don't know if that's quite true, but I would expect that there are a number of users who, if told that they had to spend $200 today or never ever be able to get a CC2 would do so; many of these users, however, see no particular rush and so they're perfectly happy to survive without a CC2 until tomorrow, and the day after, etc.

934805

After the first batch was gone and Chad said no more, one went on e-bay for $400.

10. Are these correct?

11. OK, I put in sub-menu into that program of mine:

Java CC2Menu Gen version 02

It does put in a sub menu for each company and each controller, so this will go 3 levels deep and make a lot of files to put on your MMC card.

This still is/maybe buggy, so be warned.  I can try to fix everything.  (maybe I should start a new thread for bugs and enhancements.)

Here is what it looks like now:

ccmenugen02.jpg

Have fun :)

Now it will sub menu at different levels. So if a company has more then 20 items:

it will put in a entry like this in the COMPANY.CC2:

----20th Century Fox (Menu 22 itms)-----

and will create a sub-menu like this:

Alien
Alligator People (Proto)
Bank Heist
Beany Bopper
Crash Dive
Crypts of Chaos

In here there are sub-menu's for:

2-Btn, Joystick, and Paddles

If you can think of a better way to put these sub-menus items in please let me know.

Happy CC2-ing.

12. Really? I have in utlities

"save last menu position" = no,

"Start in Select mode" = no

So mine always boots to "Menu" allowing anthing at the top to be selected.

916304

Sorry, didn't see that option. This must have changed while up-grading?

OK, I put in sub-menu into that program of mine:

Java CC2Menu Gen version 02

It does put in a sub menu for each company and each controller, so this will go 3 levels deep and make a lot of files to put on your MMC card.

Have fun :)

13. Ok,

Here's version 2.01.  It clears the menu when loading a new one, so smaller ones will no longer leave garbage lying around.

Also changed it so that the menu bar will wrap from top to bottom / bottom to top when scrolling through a menu smaller than one screen.

Chad

915837

Chad,

One minor thing: When you come back to the menu after powering off and back on, it is no longer in the menu but at the top menu, with –select- highlighted.

Did you want that to happen, because with the old menus, it didn’t do that?

14. OK there is something wrong with the new CCROMDB.TXT and this program when it comes to company order.

The program will gen with controller order and/or game name order.

The program is getting an error in the Company order part and will not go on to the controller order section after this error. I will need to fix and replace the program, maybe this weekend.

Soory :(

15. It didn't have it...

I copied and pasted to word the menu file txt generated and there is only entries for names.

no companies no controllers.

just renamed my other cc2 file and games GAESold and Menu.old and put the new generated file in but it only had the names,

when I ran it without names checked I got nothing but the GAMES folder, nothing in the txt file... (nothing in the cc2 file either!)

914715

OK, I'll look into it and get back to you.

16. @mot: That would be awesome!

BTW I just ran the java applet just like I would the menu generator, with a copy of all of my roms in a folder with the cc2romdb that you provided. I selected all three methods of ordering the roms... ran the program and got the memu.txt, menu.cc2 and GAMES folder as expected nice little progress list, but no format change when running in the cc2...the alternate controler games were still all mixed in there was no grouping by company or anything, did I do something wrong?

914690

If you selected all three check boxes, then you will have to go past all the usual entries sorted by game name to the part that has them sorted by company name then then to the part where it is sorted by controller type.

or

go backwards to see the controller type section.

17. I guess a script to add the stuff you want could be done using the CC2ROMDB.TXT that I wrote.

The hard part of what you want is sorting the game name while ignoring the prefix.

I think only a few people seem to want to sort their CC2 menu in different ways other than just game name around here. ?

One thing I would like to have a 2 level menu on the cc2 so the top level would be:

GAME NAME

COMPANY NAME

CONTROLLER TYPE

Once you select one of these choices, the sub menu would appear with a list of the games in that order.

That would be realy spiffy dude!

18. The CC2ROMDB is there a way to safely edit that so that "(PAL)" at the end = "P: " at the begining so that all the PAL games are in a group, likewise the non protos, (proto) = "Proto: " , Hack/Home = "Hk: " or "Hb: " and the alternate required controlers "C:(ctrl type) "

((conversly all the NTSC games could have an "N:" instead, depending on region))

In the DB that I created I have company as one of the attributes this takes care of "Hacks" as this is listed as Hacks as the company.

I was thinking of putting a check box in my Java Menu gen program, to filter by removing all (PAL) roms but you can always just take out the PAL (or NTSC) from the input directory.

(ctrl type)

2B -two button

BG -booster grip

KC -kids controller

KB -key board

PK -pokey

AV -Atarivox

FC -footcraz

TP -touchpad

Pl -paddel

DC -driving controler

ML- mindlink

TF- Track and Feild controller

with the hierarchy being Proto/pal/7800/H/controler not normal (name of game)

= "Proto: P: 78: (Hk:or Hb:) C(xy): " or a total of 20 being the longest possible string if we leave in spaces... if its a proto pal 7800 hack/homebrew that uses alternate controlers... (not likely to be a released hack/homebrew that is also a proto)

of coruse you could have it omit spaces that would save room also.

...just cuz I'm lazy and run the menu generator frequently.

914324

In the CC2ROMDB.TXT that I created I put in this as one of the attributes and here are all of them:

private static final String[][] CONTROLLS =
         {
            {"2", "2-Btn"},
            {"K", "Keypad"},
            {"P", "Paddles"},
            {"D", "Drive"},
            {"C", "CosmicCmd"},
            {"B", "BoostrGrp"},
            {"F", "FootCraz"},
            {"I", "KidCtrl"},
            {"V", "Joy+TPad"},
            {"L", "LGun"},
            {"JL", "Joy/LGun"},
            {"J2L", "2BJoy/LGun"},
            {"KV", "KidVid"},
            {"TB", "Trackball"}
         };

and I wrote the Java menu gen to go with this data so it will sort the games in controler order. So I can plug my paddles in and go to the paddle part of the menu and play these at one time.

Sample output menu is:

----------------Joystick----------------
7800: Asteroids
7800: Ballblazer
7800: Centipede
:
----------------Paddles-----------------
Astroblast                       Paddles
Bachelorette Party               Paddles
Backgammon                       Paddles
