I've been in possession of a C64 with a 1541 drive for a while now, with very little complaints. However recent games I have purchased for it are making me question if I have bad disks or a stubborn drive. When I began using the drive for the first time - probably the first time the drive has been used in years - it would take 3-4 tries per disk in order to get it working. I even had a mint in the box copy of Space Harrier that I had to try loading a handful of times before it would work. But this would happen with a small handful of disks until they started loading on the first try, and they have been ever since. Most of the disks I've acquired loaded perfectly the first time I took a look at them.

However, I'm somewhat concerned about certain disks I have, and I'm not sure if the drive is being stubborn, or if the disks are going bad. Here's what I've documented so far:

Ghostbusters - Game works perfectly fine, but on the "Activision" load screen, the drive makes loud grinding / clicking noises, the kind it makes if you try to load a disk and you get a disk read error on the DOS screen. It makes this noise twice, then it goes silent for a while, then it makes it one last time a few moment before the title screen appears. I assumed it was normal, but now not so much. The game loads and plays perfectly fine, so I wasn't sure if it was part of the loading process or not. It's not a pleasant sound, regardless.

Back to the Future Part 2 - I am able to get the title screen to load, with the intro animation and music, but when I hit the fire button, the screen goes into that color-changing loading state before it goes white. I can hear the disk spinning, but the head stops moving. It spins for a good few minutes before stopping altogether, leaving me locked on the white screen. A couple of times the screen went from white to black, but other than the color change, zero difference was made in how the drive behaved. Today I decided to try it again, and while it got stuck on the white screen, the drive kept on spinning. Another try brought me back to the DOS screen, which remained completely blank.

Castle Wolfenstein: game appears to run fine, but I think I get a clue as to what's up with the disk drive. When I start a new game, on the second text intro screen, the drive makes that clicking noise, but only for a moment. The drive stops completely and at the bottom I get:

    Disk Error #20
    read error, 30,16

    Press any key to RETRY

Luckily I got my hands on the 1541 manual...it says #20 means "Block header not found", so I assume memory blocks 30 and 16 are unreadable for one reason or another

After pressing a key, then the game loads / plays normally. I played through the first few screens and tried to save the game, which did not work. The drive does the same thing as it did when loading a new game, making that momentary clicking noise, and then stopping. I get the following:

    Disk Error #

...which I find odd, since this gives me no reference number.

Loading a previous save is like a dark joke, it appears to load normally, but what I get is a blank room. No doors, keys, or anything. Just you all by yourself, with ten bullets and a grenade. Kinda creepy.

So yeah, I'm not sure what's going on, but I want to at least have an idea before I decide to dismantle the whole thing.

I'm pretty sure thats exactly how Ghostbusters loads. I have a copy that starts to load then makes that clickly head banging noise like when you have a bad disk, then a few minutes of reading and it happens a second time but the game comes up and plays just fine no errors. I think your drive is probably fine atleast on ghostbusters.

    Dear AtariAge members and guest,

The Official NEO-GEO Thread on Atariage.com has just reached 1,000,000 views and continues to grow for the community to benefit and enjoy. It's been amazing 6+ years in which this thread help introduced Neo-Geo to the Atariage.com forums at a time when the Neo-Geo consoles and it's library of titles was hardly ever discussed or even mention compared to other popular units and companies that continuously are mentioned throughout the site.

As a dedicated and long time buff of the Neo-Geo and SNK, I wanted to start a thread for it in order to interest and help contribute for others to participate. It wasn't going to be a simple task since the Neo-Geo is a niche market to begin with, while the vast majority on here don't posses the consoles or the games. So it was going to be an uphill challenge to try to make this successful.

But thankfully, it worked. We as a gaming group were able to make this successful on the AtariAge forums for all to come by, see, and post away with us to discuss and view our Neo-Geo and SNK related material that we have to offer. It's been an amazing ride and wish to thank you all for making it possible. Without your help, The Official NEO-GEO Thread wouldn't have made it to where it is today.

I also like to give a special thanks to Albert Yarusso, the administrator of AtariAge.com for allowing me to create the Neo-Geo thread and his continued support for what it offers to help this gaming forum and the thread to expand in areas that we thought wasn't imaginable.  Thank you Albert. If it wasn't for you to give me permission to let this thread grow, we wouldn't be where we are today.

As always fellas. Keep up the great work, and always looking forward on seeing you on with us doing what you do  best. Let's continue onward, and wishing you all the greatest and thank once anew on making The Official NEO-GEO Thread a success.

    Sincerely,

    fdurso224

  4. Hello everyone, I bought this off of eBay thinking it was the USA version but when I got it I can definitely see that it is PAL. I really don't collect anything other than the NTSC games so if anyone is looking for this game in PAL just shoot me an offer. The holes in the center have been punched and there is a 2.00$ written in the center with sharpie. Label is creased on the end from when someone opened it to probably see why the heck it was playing in B and W only on their TV all these years ago lol.

I am looking at an original console just because there is one near me, and we’ve talked about going in halfsies on consoles before.

She likes games that tickles her brains, so lots of sim games and puzzlers but if there’s a platformer like Braid for example that can scratch the noggin she enjoys it whatever the genre may be.

You should show her fortune builder amd zenji, two player sim action and a race against the clock mega puzzler.

  6. Hello everyone, I won this real cheap off of eBay but when I went to test it the screen only comes up in B and W and flashed a light color blue line when playing, all other functions were normal. I thought it was odd so I did some investigating and it seems like it is a pal game, there is no "LOST CAVERNS" under Pitfall II on the end label and an "E" in the code for the game in the bottom left. Is this a PAL copy, thanks in advance!

Hi - Let me know if you see any carts that you need.  I can provide additional pictures.  For many I have the manual to go along with the cart.  Prices vary depending on title and condition, etc.  PM me with any interest and I will  post more pics.  Some carts as low as $7 + you pay shipping.  Everything is negotiable... Let me know what you have to trade... carts or other 8bit items.  Thanks for looking!

Hi, how much is miner 2049er, hardball, atariwriter, qix, choplifter and river raid?

  8. Hey guys, posted a listing in the wanted section for a loose copy of magician lord on the neo geo aes, the us version, figured it might help to post here too. If anyone has an extra loose cart they are looking to get rid of let me know, willing to pay the market rate. I prefer loose over boxed since AES is already expensive enough lol. Thank you!

  9. Hey everyone just stumbled across this thread and have some questions. I've always wanted a neo geo but don't know too much about them. I am looking to get a usa console and have some questions. I see lots of Neo Geo's on ebay from japan that look identical, atleast to me, to the usa consoles. Are they're any markings on the outside or underneath that distinguish the two easily? What would be a good price to pay for a stock unmodified console, power supply and 1 of the arcade sticks and what would be the best place to get one, maybe if someone knows someone looking to get rid of one? Thanks everyone!

Hello everyone, I just had a quick question. I purchased an untested C64 for parts cheaply and when I received it I was surprised that everything seemed to function just fine on it. The only problem is that when I test it using a converted C128 to C64 power supply, after about 7-8 minutes there is an invisible line that appears in the center of the video feed and it starts getting more and more wavy and scrolls, the lines look like an ocean for example. I'm not sure what you call that, I think v-sync? Anyways, with the Ray Carlson power supply I have I tested the unit and it does not seem to occur even after testing with it for about 30 minutes. Lines never seem to get wavy but I haven't tested any longer than that. Could the problem be with the computer itself or could it be the C128 power supply is getting old and is having trouble supplying enough power to the unit. I couldn't test the other monitor port because it only has 5 pins not more like some of the other C64 models. The power supply works just fine on my other C64 with different monitor out ports, so not sure if there is some other differences with this C64 that require less power than the other? Thanks for your help!

Also one other question, I had a dead C128 power supply that wasn't working because I suspected the fuse was blown, which it was and replacing it with another from a different C128 PSU made it work again like normal. The fuse I pulled put that was non-functional was marked Buss, which I assume is the company name, AGC 1 6/10 and 250V. Is the 1 6/10 the Amps the fuse is rated for? Sorry if it's a dumb question haha. Also, does anyone know where I can get that exact match. Thanks.

Hmm... I also bought some brand new ones from Console5 a few months ago but I haven't tried any in a PC Engine or TurboGrafx yet. Been meaning to since the listing didn't seem too sure about whether or not they work with TG16, but I think I bought the last of them anyway so I didn't feel the need to hurry. They definitely fit at least.

Anyway, perhaps a better option is a mini-DIN RGB mod where the RF jack used to be. Doujindance sells a kit for the original white PC Engine but it's expensive and you'd probably need to adapt/extend the QSB to reach the TG16's EXT port... which I believe would have a backwards PCB footprint anyway due to the way it's mounted on the PCB upside-down. Frank Strasser made a DIY kit on OSHPark but deleted it when he started getting grilled by dbElectronics about attribution (it was based on the dbGrafx Booster). Though Rene (db) seemed to find the attribution he was looking for was already there, Frank had already responded by blocking him on Twitter and, thus, it may be lost forever. *SIGH*

MobiusStripTech shared and others have shared PCB mounts to fit the mini-DIN if you want to just wire up straight composite, audio, and RGB, but I would at least suggest Mobius' audio amp so you won't have to crank the volume.

That is odd. What are you using as a system card? A Turbo Everdrive needs special patched BIOS files to avoid memory bus fighting and bus fighting could cause issues like you describe.

It's definitely worth trying another power supply before doing anything drastic. I can try my Triad 1300mA PSU from Console5 to see if that works.

I've seen numerous examples of TurboDuos and PC Engine CD setups that have problems loading until you unplug other devices that aren't even powered on (often not even in the same power outlet) so it seems that the NEC hardware can be really we sensitive to other interference on the power line. Here's one example (caution: foul language):

Do you get audio buzzing with the drive installed while playing HuCard games? If so I would suspect a capacitor got installed backwards or something. Most professionals offering the service are using non-polarized ceramic caps wherever they can get away with it because they never go bad but I don't think they should (different electrical characteristics).

I will also try my TrueTone 1Spot since it has more amps than the original.

Also, just noticed one more thing, now that I finally got some time to sit down and test this whole unit with a good power supply that is in spec with the 10.5 V and 1.5 Amps. When I played for about 15 minutes straight I noticed that the power to the LEDs began to turn off. After about 5 minutes the first went, then another 10 and the second went too. Also, previously I thought that the intro cinemas were playing correctly, but I just noticed that JB Harold is actually immediately messed up. Audio seems to be fine, but the scrolling images are missing large pieces or crooked. Both in and out of the dock the 2 pieces of the LEDs go out, if I turn the system off for about 20 minutes they both go back to normal, but go out rather quickly again. Including some pictures below. Thank you.

Hello CZroe, just got a new power supply and it was tested and works great on the doc, the buzzing sounds in some of the games is gone too, but the games still crash. I am including a couple of pictures of what is going on in Valis II and Monster Lair, maybe the system card is bad or should I just start looking for a new dock? Some of the games like Magical Dinosaur Tour seem to run fine, I don;t think that ever crashed on me, but the games that are action based do. Thanks for your help.

  14. Hello everyone, I'm looking for the dock that attaches the Turbografx cd unit to the console to play the cd games. I had purchased a lot on eBay from a guy who swore it worked and come to find out of course it had problems as did the cd unit that came with it, which I had to send in to get repaired and when it came back that's how I found out the dock was messed up too. Unfortunately the gentleman repairing the cd unit doesn't offer services for the dock, which I can imagine is due to the rarity of chips/parts and so I've landed here in an attempt to finally play some Turbo CD games. I've been slowly piecing everything over the last few months, buying system cards and a minty copy of JB Harold Murder Club, trying to get a fully working unit and I've finally had it with all the mishaps lol. If someone has an extra dock or knows someone willing to part with one PLEASE send them my way. I'm willing to pay the going rate just to finally put all this crap behind me. Also I know I don't have much feedback here but I sell on eBay and have about 1500 feedback there. Thank you for your time everyone!

  15. Hey guys I have something I need your help with, tried looking online for about an hour and can't find anything about the issue i'm having. I just got my turbografx cd unit repaired professionally and when I tried to use it on my set up, the cd games seem to be reading fine for a minute or so, then the game will just crash. Happens to each game at the exact same spot usually. I tried Valis 2 for example and you can run to the right but not kill anything, if you happen to touch a monster in the wrong way the game just locks up and the music keeps playing. Something like this happens to all of the games I own, some won't get passed the intro or if they do they will just lock up as soon as I hit start or if I manage to play for a few minutes in Sherlock Holmes then the game just resets to the title screen without me doing anything special. One thing I noticed was when I played JB harold murder club there was a lot of interference in the music, like a humming noise during the police station intro to the game. I can use the dock on it's own perfectly fine without the cd unit attached, like if I just want to play Nueotopia on the tg16 by itself, I can save, load the same save from days ago. The video and audio are clean on all of the hucard games i own and they play with no problem/no freezing. Could it be an issue with the dock itself, the cd system card or maybe the power supply unit? I got this dock second-hand so I have no idea what it's history is, same thing for the cd system card. The power supply I'm using is a sega genesis model 1 power supply, could it not be supplying enough power? Any help is appreciated, I've invested a lot of time and money and really want to see this thing work :( . Thank you everyone!
