5200 vs. 7800

You're proving my point with those shots. Thanks. 996423 Not by a long shot.

5200 vs. 7800

Marginally better? Games like Joust, Robotron, Asteroids, and Ballblazer are fantastic compared to their clunky, flickery, low-color computer cousins. 995784 I have both versions of all these games. If read the line within the context of my message. The statement means I did not want to put out extra money on my Middle School student budget for games that are marginally better than their 8bit counterparts. I prefer the 7800 versions now, but in 1986 the money was better spent on other things. I saw no difference in Ballblazer. Robotron looks the same to me. Joust has only 1 color for each player on the 8bit and the bounce on the ceiling is different from the 7800. Pole Pos. well did not look like they tried very hard ad improving this game. The only one of the above with much more improvement compared to the 8bit is Asteroids, but 3D rocks are not worth the outlay I would have to put out for these games alone. By that time. I had amass maybe a $1000 worth of 8bit equipment and software. I was not about to do it for the 7800. Especially when I saw the writing on the wall with the NES dominating from 1986. I was hoping thing would have improved softwarewise on the 7800, but it didn't and I just gave up waiting for the 7800 to have games worth upgrading for. 996159 You see this is where I plug my ears and stop listening. The NES is a giant steaming pile of cutesy mushroom and fat plumber infested crap.

5200 vs. 7800

Worse than the much-maligned 7800 Pain-Line controllers even. Analog Controllers could only be a positive in free-environment games, like Berzerk or Centipede. Linear directional movement games, with 8 or even only 4 directions being used, and the definite need for a centering feature to stop the character (like Pac-Man, Pitfall, etc.) become virtually unplayable once you move the joystick as you can never get them back to center properly without taking your eyes off the screen, and even then only if you're lucky.
4. Exactly. The metal contacts get oxidated easily, especially with age. Popping the caps off and cleaning the system board & buttons (metal dome caps like those on the CX-40 Joystick contacts) is actually pretty easy. The plastic caps which hold down the metal contact buttons(domes) are secured to the button housing with a light weight, plyable metal frame, which can easily be bent away for the plastic caps to be popped out. Once you do this -remove teh metal contact domes and clean the underside of the metal button and the contact points on the system board with isopropyl alcohol, or a very fine sand paper. Once sufficiently cleaned, replace the metal dome buttons (dome side up) and thencarefully pop teh plastic caps back into the now bent metal housing. You do NOT need to completely place teh entire plastic cap back into the metal housing. Only enough so that they won't fall out, but are free to move up & down to activate the button. Too tight, and you button will stick in place. If you have trouble replacing the caps without them falling back out of the frame, a small 1 inch piece of black electrical tape over the top of them should be enough to secure them, yet retain their button function.

5200 vs. 7800

Not to be off-topic, but I've tried to find that hack for a while (being that I have a 7800 now. and a CX-80 Trak-Ball). Where is it? 993718 Here.
6. Making homebrews of unreleased games that the licenses are owned by other people (in this case Frogger) is not illegal. I support the creation of new Atari 7800 games wholeheartedly. In fact - I've been a bugtester on several of them. I love the fact that some of these great games have been ressurected and coded (or re-coded) for the 7800. Distributing them for free on the internet is perfectly fine. But I understand why these guys are using other names to protect themselves as well. It's the Selling of them for profit that is against the law. Now I'm not opposed to someone selling unlicensed games on cart to regain their costs of building the carts, but turning a profit on someone else's PATENTED idea is not only legally wrong, but MORALLY as well. It's theft. period. You can make the argument that the licenses have already paid for themselves. I agree. But the license holders for ALL of these games ARE still releasing versions of them for the newer systems, so they aren't exatly letting the statute of limitations run out on their licenses either. Now Harry - he made a Brand New game, and is selling it. Bravo. That's commendable. And to date, I'm not aware of any of the other homebrewers in our community trying to turn a profit on licensed works. Keep making Great homebrews. I'l bugtest them all. But keep it legal folks.
7. The companies on pricewatch tend to be shady. I find that Newegg.com is a better choice. I just look on the Refurb section for something I want. The reason is the prices are good except shipping knocks the prices above those on pricewatch. The refurbs get shipping for $1. I picked up my 2 RSMMC cards there. 512Meg RSMMC for $26 shipped. One was open the other was brand new. I can also use them in a Cell phone or digital camera. I know 512Meg is overkill in a CC2, but it was only$5 more than 256 or $7 more than 128. 990082 That's $12 more than you needed. Every 7800 & 2600 game rom in existence, and all the text manuals, plus all the versions to date of the CC2's O/S tops out at just over 12 megs. I got a 32 meg MMC at Best Buy for $6.99 on clearance.
8. I didn't list it because there is a impossible mission that isn't impossible and can be downloaded on the internet. If you have a curttle Cart 2 you can play it on your 7800. I think John, and Mitch can confirm that. IF I put Impossible Mission down, people might vote for it because of the glitch that makes it impossible. I wanted to put games that weren't improved by glitches already fixed. If that glitch was not corrected, then I would have put it down instead of Tank Command. 984793 Oooooooohhhhh, ok, then. 985393 Did you read the second post in your original thread asking about it? How about any of the other posts that explained that this game has been fixed?
9. And now some perspective for You, too. While I personaly may not go quite as far as saying picking a fight, I can honestly say that many of your responses in this thread have been both unneccessarly abrasive and personal. Particuarly this one that I'm replying to. Intelligent dialog and tact will make your point much better then insults and abuse. To that end, if you want to talk about maturity. As an uninterested 3rd party watching others, seeing one person remain calm and say what they have to say without drama vs someone else who likes to be snippy and yell and throw insults around and speak for others and take cheap shots. Well, which one do you think will get pegged with the title of being immature? 982719 Shall I post the 5 or 6 Multi-page diatribe Personal Messages that Shadow460 has sent to me cursing me out, threatening my usership here, threatening to get me banned, etc. all for nothing more than having a difference of opinion? There's a LOT to this you don't really know. Mostly because I haven't posted it, and won't. Suffice to say - Mr. Shadow is nowhere near the innocent victim he's claiming to be. He's a 10x more abusive nutball who flies off the handle anytime someone contradicts him than I may appear to you.
10. As would adding the mysterious Arcade-Only 4th screen (Pie Factory).
11. Looking at the Gamespot reviews, I'd rate Combat 1990 like this Gameplay.. 10 (twice that with 2 people) Graphics...... 6 Sound.......... 5 (considering stupid TIA sound chip and no score ever goes below 5) Value......... 10 Tilt.............. 10 Difficulty............... Easy Learning Curve.. 5 minutes Overall, I'd rate it as 10/10. It is obviously the best new 7800 game to be released on cartridge for sale this year. ESRB: E for Everyone MPAA: PG for continuous cartoon violence 982391 Congrats on the glowing review, but I have to ask - isn't this also the ONLY new 7800 game to be released this year that is being sold on cart?
12. Don't worry, Picasso, I mean, Artlover (I'm kidding there), I'm not offended by what you've posted. 982335 Who are you kidding. The way you act - there's no way you have any friends.
13. I did not "pick a fight" with you. Ken called the game HE programmed Beef Drop for LEGAL LIABILITY reasons. You've already stated that you don't care about his wishes, and will call it what you will. I just hope for Ken's sake you're willing to pick up the tab if the Licenses holders for Burger Time decided to come after him for copyright infringement. This isn't some stupid petty squabble, you doofus. we don't refer to it as Burger Time because a. - it's NOT, and b. - we like Ken, and hope he continues to grace us with his presence, and his wonderful game programs. So do Ken and the rest of us a favor and stop acting like a selfish 5 year old. Grow up.
14. I didn't ask what the LABEL said on it. I asked what the TITLE SCREEN says at the game's start. Ken Siders' game say s Beef Drop. To my knowledge, there is not an existing version of this game with a Title Screen that says Burgertime. Nor is there another port of Burger Time for the 7800.
15. Does the title screen say Burgertime, or Beef Drop?
16. get two sealed of each - and open one. Then you can play it, and the other one becomes instantly more valuable because there is one less sealed version out there. Or - if you only have one - open it. It's just a video game.
17. It will work. Not without special drivers. 939270 Incorrect, on both counts. The Stelladaptor will allow you to use an Atari Trak-ball in Joystick mode only, and only in Games that support the Stelladaptor. There are no drivers in existence that will allow you to use the Atari Trak-Ball as a mouse in PC applications. You need to hack the optics of an Atari Track-Ball to the optics solder points of a Windows compatible serial/PS2 mouse. The Happ trackball is the way to go if you're not so good at soldering.
18. Actually, I didn't know what to expect from this forum. I got troll'ed when I mentioned that I preferred A800 Ballblazer to the 7800 version. I could put my CVS (not) one-time camcoder in front of a screen and make a movie of the game in action, but I don't have anywhere to host that large of a file (about 4MB/minute). 968038 Or you could fire it up on an older version of M.E.S.S. that records the output to an avi file. Or just post some screen shots.
19. Price needs to include: - cost of any materials (PCBs, EPROMs, sacrificial donor carts) - amortized cost of any one time costs (EPROM burner) - amortized cost of any one time labour (PCB layout) - manufacturing labour - author royalties - profit / risk factor Of course, that is to be expected. Don't sell enough at the higher price, and you still run the risk of losing money on the costs. In fact - one could argue that the higher the price, the higher the risk, especially in sucha small niche market of classic gamers with a very little-known system like the 7800. Can't argue with that. If $39.95 covers the costs better, so be it. It's not unreasonable. It might increase sales, true. It might also increase specualtion that the game just plain isn't very good and conversely decrease sales. Since I've never seen a single screenshot, working avi, etc, I can't say one way or the other. That's the point. I'm not too excited with plunking down $40.00 for something I haven't seen in action. I wouldn't do it on a store bouoght game for any other system. Probably a smart call. Actually - despite what Lars Ulrich and the RIAA gestapo like to feign, record sales for the most highly downloaded Albums by major recording artists have stayed the same or increased. What the Record Companies and Movie Studios have seen is a downtick in sales of some of their "subpar" efforts. People download a CD/Movie that isn't so great and decide not to buy it. So you can make the argument, is it the uploader's fault? - or the artist/producer's fault for offering a less than satisfactory product? I would willingly buy EVERY single one of those on cart when they are offered. Mostly because I know what they are like from testing the earlier versions myself as they were posted WIP right here at AA. Everyone is entitled to soapbox. I'm sure Harry appreciates this feedback, even if it isn't the answers he was hoping for.
20. Tell that to the RIAA and the MPAA. 968014 I'm a full time musician, ASCAP & BMI published, on a medium sized record label. We post sample versions of all of our new music for FREE in MP3 format on our website before it's CD release. In fact - MOST professional musicians do. At the very least, you should post a limited version, maybe one that has a timer that ends the game before you're done.
21. $29.95 for the Actual Cart. ROM download for free, to try it out first. No different than renting a current game before you buy it, or trying it in the store. Regardless of videogame system/platform, Atari, Sega, Nintendo, PS1/2 - there's nothing worse than dropping $30 to $60 dollars on a game that sucks ass, with no return policy. But - there's also nothing better than to get a new game you can't put down either.
22. How about a WIP .bin file to test?
23. Not with Atari ROMs you won't. I have EVERY single ROM & Manual in existence. It's just barely 10 megs.
