PSP....is it worth getting for my useage?
Danno replied to kondre's topic in Modern Console Discussion
And I could point to a large number of posts in the forums of that board, that give both bad/dangerous information, and provincial attitudes towards other, more up-to-date PSP hacking web locations. DCEMU has really strange policies about what they allow discussion on, and they remove posts constantly that link to other web sites they fear are their "competition", even at the risk of giving their own users bad information about fake downgraders that end up bricking their PSPs. Plus they removed a thread I started in their Emulation section about the first release of PSP7800, simply because it linked back to here (Atariage.com) because I didn't ask them to be the exclusive host so they could take credit for the release. I wasn't trying to invalidate your posts, as I was just trying to steer people interested in the PSP away from a site that does more harm than good for the scene. Sorry if it came off like I was sniping at you. There's lots of bad info out there about the PSP hacking scene, because Sony is REALLY mad about the homebrew scene. It gets kind of ugly sometimes, And Since I've been involved for a while now, I have a pretty good handle on who to trust and who not. I just wanted to relay good info, thats all. -
PSP....is it worth getting for my useage?
Danno replied to kondre's topic in Modern Console Discussion
Danno- pleas dont do that. now you are taking this and going personal on him. those kind of comments are not going to help. Kevin The guy likes to argue. Sometimes, I do to. But I don't like seeing it in a thread where someone asks for help for a system they already bought and paid for. It's counterproductive, and derailing. -
PSP....is it worth getting for my useage?
Danno replied to kondre's topic in Modern Console Discussion
Sorry, but it just bugs me when someone like Kondre comes in here and asks a question like "I'm getting a PSP, what shold I know about emulation, etc." and some people's first reactions are to immediately jump on the "The PSP sucks for emulation compared to the GP2x." argument instead of just helping the guy out. Bu I've seen you do that in the 7800 forum too, so I shouldn't be surprised. -

Good question. After you downgrade to 1.5, you can reupgrade to the "Special Edition" of newer versions that have the web browser. It is true that the PSP's resolution is not ideal for emulation - it is widescreen and will letterbox games where the GP2x won't. I 100% agree that the GP2x's 320x240 resolution is superior for emulation. I also agree that for an emulation machine alone, I would prefer a GP2X to a PSP. It's really a tradeoff between the letterboxing for emulation against the higher native resolution (420x272), which is much nicer when the PSP is being used for web browsing or for playing games designed for the PSP. And the Gp2x, for all it's praise, has a slower processor, and will never be able to compete with t he raw horsepower of the PSP. It's a very limited platform. The PSP, is as close to an all-in-one device that is portable that we have ever seen. Updating to Custom firmware is really no more difficult than adding files to your memory card and executing them. i have to disagree with you there. It's not a very limited platform when it comes to being a true PMP, it's an open source system, the PSP is not, anybody can pick up a GP2X and code anything they want for it and since it uses Linux the possibilities of what i can do far exceed that of the PSP, it's just a system with a much smaller user base and a much smaller developer base. If the GP2x had the man power as the PSP it could do much more. I mean look at the GP32, it has amazing homebrew applications that the PSP does not have, it even had a mod for GPS, it even had an application that let PC's notice it as a Gamepad. Programs like, Mappy, Wind-ups, which was basically Windows on GP32, though it was coded from scratch not a port, there's stuff the good ol GP32 has that the PSP can't even match, and the GP32 is stock 133mhz overclockable to 156mhz and higher. It's not the horsepower that drives the system, it's the man power. There are emus for the beastly PSP that run worse than GP32 at 132mhz, its all coder talent and what they can and can't do under the hood and a open source system like the GP32 and GP2x with official developer and homebrew dev kits work out much better than hacked kits and hacked hardware. In case you just don't understand properly, the PSPSDK is a Linux based coding system. UcLinux already runs on the PSP. the PSPSDK isn't a hack, it's the official SDK for the PSP. the Libraries are enormous. The PSP is a 333Mhz power house. It can be overclocked to 333Mhz, or underclocked as low as you want. It's normal clock rate is 222mhz. It already has had OFFICIAL built-in GPS support for Months. It also has an Official Video/Still Camera. You can use it as a USB Gamepad for your PC. You can use it with a PS3. You can connect it's USB port and play games stored ON YOUR PC. It has over 400 Homebrew releases. In fact - most of the newer Emulators being released for the GP are ports of the PSP versions, because the development libraries are vastly superior. there is nothing the GP can do that the PSP can't. there are TON's of things the PSP can do that the GP WON'T ever do. Like Playstation 1 Emulation with 100% accuracy. NEO-GEO CD emulation with 100% accuracy. Full resolution DVD video. -

PSP....is it worth getting for my useage?
Danno replied to kondre's topic in Modern Console Discussion
It will stretch, if you want it to. It will fit the screen centered, but with the correct aspect, if you you choose. It will zoom in to make the image fit, but leave the correct aspect, if you want. In some emulators, you can even rotate the screen if you like. The older firmwares will not run some of the newer games. All Firmwares previous to 2.00 do not have the Web Browser. The Custom firmwares (3.00 thru 3.40) will run ALL PSP UMD games, ALL emulators, All homebrew original games and ports, ISO backup copys of PSP UMD games, and converted ISO copies of PSX games. Also, The latest version of the Custom Firmware (3.40) has unlocked the ability to watch videos at true DVD resolution 720x480, instead of having to scale down and reconvert the video. -

I don't know of a single emulator that is limited to "letterboxed" resolutions on the PSP. All of the ones I've used/worked on have multiple resolution options, including scaling, stretching, original, etc. Letterboxing is actually a term reserved for Movies when fitting widescreen movie content to a 4:3 screen, allowing the subtitles to be isplayed in the resultant black box below the image. And the Gp2x, for all it's praise, has a slower processor, and will never be able to compete with t he raw horsepower of the PSP. It's a very limited platform. The PSP's screen is much larger and brighter. the custom firmwares are NOT piracy, as the code written to run them is 100% independant of Sony's firmware. They will void your warranty, but that's about it. the PSP has a nearly 100% compatible Playstation 1 emulator built into the firmware, the GP2x won't ever have that. And as I said in plenty of other threads - your chances of bricking from an Official Sony Update are 10x what they are from the current downgraders. -

Danno replied to kondre's topic in Modern Console Discussion
If it's over 3.03 - then you're out of luck, at least for the moment. DO NOT upgrade using Sony's network update. Eventually, a Downgrader for 3.10 and 3.11 will be available. If it's 3.03 or below, you can get one of the downgraders from here: http://www.dark-alex.org read the readme. It it's 3.03, you'll need to have an older, unpatched version of GTA: Liberty City Stories to downgrade. If it's 2.71 or lower, you won't need GTA. Also Check the downloads section and forums of www.psp-hacks.com. they have lots of useful stuff there. -

right. You can check it right in the main XMB menu, if you go to System Info. If it's 3.03 or lower, you can downgrade it to 1.50 which will run homebrew and emulators, but I would suggest then upgrading to one of the custom firmwares, so you can take advantage of the built in PSX emulator. -

Danno replied to MetalSlime23's topic in Modern Console Discussion
With the current downgraders, there's less of a chance of bricking your PSP than if you do an Official Sony Network Update. The Sony updates have no fail-safes built into them, and don't check the battery life or the hash CRC of the file to make sure it downloaded properly. Dark alex's current downgraders do all of that and automatically abort if they detect a problem - something Sony's updates DON'T do. -

Does anyone here know how to set up cygwin to compile for the PSP, including SDL libraries? I've been trying to no avail for weeks now. I've found multiple tutorials on this, all with slighty different instructions, but none of them seem to work. I want to work on/compile psp7800/prosystem, but without a working compile environment, I can't.

Zero. Wrong. Centipede 7800 was hacked by kenfused to work with the CX-22.

There is no 2.73 firmware. There is 2.71, 2.80 2.81, and 2.82 then 3.00. if it's 2.71, you DON'T need an unpatched GTA LCS to downgrade. You need HEN-D, and the 2.71 downgrader. Both of which you can get at http://www.dark-alex.org. TA-082 Downgrader here: http://downgrader.lan.st/ta082down.rar HEN-D here: http://exophase.com/files/psp/hend.rar Once you've downgraded it to 1.50, you can install 3.40 OE-A, and run ALL hombrew, emulators, PSP-iso's and converted PSX games. To convert you psx games you need to rip them to ISO, then use PSX2PSP 1.2. -

You're kidding, right? that's most of the reason people are buying psp's now - because it's the BEST portable emulator platform, hands down. -

What Firmware is it running ? Check under system settings DO NOT use the Network Update feature. If it's running 3.03 or earlier, you can install custom firmware. If it's running 3.10 or later, it's a $170.00 paperweight. -
Considering a PSP, what do I need to know?

Also - www.psp-hacks.com hosts all the files everyone else is afraid to host. -

www.dark-alex.org is where you will find the most up to date and genuine custom firmwares. I wouldn't trust much of the stuff from DCEMU, as they tend to be very provincial, and critical of other sites, and also really slow to get the updates. maxconsole is Dark Alex's home forum. He posts all his releases there first, and then everyone else grabs them. I would suggest getting a Used PSP (and testing it in the store to see which firmware it has on it before you leave), or if new, make sure the box is letter "N" or lower, otherwise you won't be able to downgrade/install custom firmware. -
Brian - can I ask you to post or PM me the new 1.2 source files so I can forward them on to the PSP devs I worked with to get the PSP port of this updated? thanks. Here you go... I want to test out the command line stuff a little more before sending it out for release but that shouldn't affect any PSP updates.Prosystem_1_2_Src.zip AWESOME. the PSP port is forthcoming. I'll post it once it's ready.

Get a #0 or #1 philips head screwdriver set from Radio Shack for $4.99, and a can of compressed air. there are 5 screws you will need to remove to take the cover off. One on the bottom of the console, and then two on the right (you'll see the holes) and two on the left under the battery if you are looking at the back of the PSP. There are 4 screws under the battery, but only two need to be removed to open it. The ones to remove on the left under the battery are the BLACK ones to the far left, top and bottom. The bottom one is under a sticker. You will have to peel the sticker away. You DO NOT have to remove the silver screws under the battery to open your PSP. It's really easy, but make sure you do it in a dust-free room.

There is a 7800 Centipede hack that uses it. IT's AWESOME.
