I think the biggest problem here is assumption. I was around right in the beginning/middle of the heyday for both systems, and I have to make a few points: 1. Atari collectors are fickle. This includes nostalgic wise. If you grew up with the 2600, and it was your first system, it holds and important place in history, it changed the way video games are marketed and looked at with the sheer hype and amount of games one could obtain. Of course, most collectors of Atari shun the NES, even calling it a "Neo-Classic" System yet the technology is from 1983. This brings me to my next point. 2. The NES was the FIRST system that had games true to the arcade. Now pay attention to this next part. Graphically, the "VS" series of games from the arcade were the same as their NES counterparts. No one had ever done anything like this before. VS Duck Hunt, VS Hogan's Alley, VS Tennis, VS Super Mario Bros, etc were a bit harder than the home versions, but graphically were exactly the same. That's what hit the nail on the head for me. You combine those aspects and it just simply blew the Atari 2600 out of the water. The Atari 2600 games were fun, but I was an arcade rat, and I refused to play anything console much because it was just not "good enough" for me. 3. My first system was a Bally Astrocade. To me THAT was much more fun than Atari 2600, but I needed multiple players to play with me, which was the problem. I decided to stay playing in the arcade in the early 80s instead. 4. Collecting for the Atari 2600 is HARDER than the NES if you are collecting all boxed games. This goes for ANYTHING, though. Those of you writing saying that the NES carts can be found for 0.99 and 2600 carts can't be found are silly. You can't GIVE away half of the loose carts for the 2600 for $1 apiece. The NES carts hold their value more, and YES, it is more difficult to obtain a boxed 2600 collection than the NES, but let's move on to the more "difficult" titles needed..... Stadium Events for NES (good luck finding this one boxed) Flintstones 2 for NES (comes up now and again) Myriad 6 in 1 (rarely comes in, very $$$) I'm not saying it is easier to find boxed Music Machine, Gauntlet, Malagai, or Video Life either, but the boxed NES games are pretty tough to get (mid-tier ones). All in all, it's who has disposable income, and who is nostalgic at the moment. The NES was much bigger than the Atari. Why are their hardly any homebrews for the NES? I'm not exactly sure if anyone wants Nintendo on their ass for making games, but I know it's not exactly simplistic to create an NES game. 8-bit games are created for various handhelds in SE ASia, but it's very tedious and time consuming for a new NES homebrew releaset to come about.

Southern California Classic Collector's Meet: changed to Oct 7th!

How many are expected to go, what kind of trade stuff has anyone committed to bringing? -
If any of you are still looking for the Dragon Warrior GBC protos, I have a couple of more sets left at $65 shipped.
-
I sent a PM, I am not sure if you received it.
-
Just to clarify, I am not digging this thing out for people that are not serious about purchasing it. TRE can vouch for me "having" these type of games, but I've received some PMs from people wanting me to prove I have the game? It's not like the thing is easy to get to, if you want to purchase it, show me the money!

I have an MK3 SNES proto, it says work in progress on the legals screen with a date, and it is a good 6-8 months before release. I think I recall it having that stage, but I am not 100% certain. Come to think of it, my copy of the game IS the EGM preliminary copy (from where I received it) so there is a good chance it DOES have this stage.

Thanks Jumpman, it's the box that seems to be the issue. I can find it loose...
-
Eric: Thanks, but none of those are on my list. Updated with increased prices.
-
Everybody gets like that though. You try to be honest, and then people jump all over you =P
-
keilbaca: It will be released one of these days, I am not the one that dumped it =P
-
keilbaca: I don't know of many people with unreleased protos on DP. The ROM has been dumped, just not released. Tempest, you are correct, it is complete, but gameplay is not polished. Not much in terms of music.
-
keilbaca: What is that supposed to mean? Who is "too stingy" and does not share? Or are you just making up stuff you "hear" about the NES community? I know a lot of people don't want to pay $1000 for a prototype and dump it for free if they don't get a donation of some sort. 2 copies of Xybots exist in prototype format for the NES. I have one of them.

Saturn version was the best one in terms of gameplay and sound minus some minor glitches with Raiden's "shock" move. PS1 version for Japan is awful. Loading time is a monstrosity. The Genesis and 32X versions are very good, but faster than the arcade, and you can't do ducking Low Punches. SNES version is good, but slightly choppy.

Yeah, I don't think I'll ever be that nuts to want to go after stuff like that =P Same goes for things like the Tooth Protectors box! -

Mayhem: It's more of a programming game, no box, I could get a lookalike repro pretty cheap, it just does not make sense for me to obtain it.....I never had interest. Yet I have interest in Video Life "somewhat". go figure. -

Wonder007: My favorite is the NES. My first system was an Astrocade, that was the only thing my dad ever gave me, and that was back in 1982 when it was already dead. When I got an NES in 1987, I was obsessed with it because it was the first system that mimicked arcade graphics. I used to go to arcades religiously when I was little, and have plenty of stories about living in the North Las Vegas ghettos and going to random arcades for years =) I saw commercials for the 2600, but it looked so rudimentary. I did not even start playing that system until the mid 80s when I moved to Florida, and it just paled in comparison to the NES and all those hours of VS. Excitebike, Vs. Super Mario Bros, VS. Tennis and more that I used to play in places like Godfather's Pizza. Ah, the good 'ol days About how far I am from completing 2600? I'm not trying to obtain all the carts. Variations from Sears, Panda, etc are no-nos for me because I really only wanted a decent collection of the majority of the boxed games that were not made in duplicate form like the Panda and majority of Sears titles. Basically, I'm missing around 15-18 games I want to say, including Eli's Ladder and Video Life, which I am not sure I will obtain, and I am choosing not to obtain Magicard, so even when I finish, I'll have around 97-98% of the total releases, but I won't try for everything on purpose. Other systems, that's a different story! -

That's why that box is way out of my league =) Wonder: I collect for all sorts of systems, and this was basically the LAST system I needed to have a decent collection for. You've got a hell of an Atari 2600 collection, though. I'd like to see you try and collect for other systems though. That would be pretty interesting =) -

Crazy Climber: I would trade them for stuff on my Wanted List on the Wanted postings in this forum, or a significant amount of cash. Wonder007: Get in line, when that box shows up, it's going to hit close to $2000, maybe even more because it's sick how difficult it is to find. Also, do you collect anything else other than Atari 2600? -

I will pay a nice price for them if interested, Thanks Actually, I do not have the instructions or box...I just have the game and two records. I am waiting when I can get the Music Machine with box and instructions. -

Wonder007: You only won one game? What's going on? Music Machine is mine, screw the box! -
CPUWIZ: Namco has both of those released in arcades in the USA. It was at Pakk-Mann in Pasadena, CA when it was open, and one of them is still at Nickel City in Northbrook, IL.

Selling a few rare bits (no cheese included)
DreamTR replied to Mayhem's topic in Buy, Sell, and Trade
Mayhem, I am interested in the Eli's Ladder. PM so we can discuss more. -
ebay cancelled the auction because someone hijacked the high bidder's account. I've never seen that before. They made me relist the item, so it's back up.
