I just had a funky doze-off, dream if you will, about a rotary valve system where the camshaft was embedded inside the head and combustion chamber. And as it spun it opened and closed intake and exhaust passages. No lifters, no rockers, no valves, no springs. My team of 100,000 engineers said there were problems with sealing and blow-by. Ohh well.

  Well, they tried electronically controlled valves but found there to be too much energy required.
