Perhaps so far there has been too little money involved to make it worthwhile, if the CLPD and FPGA chips make up for such a large bit of the original RRP? I'm comparing with the 1541 Ultimate series which are listed at equal prices as the CFFA3000. While the U1541II has a waiting list, so far it hasn't quite reached into the second hand market range of $300++ for a unit though.

I'd agree with that. There's likely little profit. And now, presently, aren't some of these parts harder to come by? That's means a re-design is likely soon enough.
