And if it is dumbed down, it is likely done on purpose. I don't think the average smartphone junkie, today, is as smart as the audience of 30-40 years ago.

Just because someone can blow through smartphone menus at lightspeed doesn't make them practical or intelligent in the real world.

Star Trek has _never_ had scientifically accurate details.  Not with William Shatner and not now.  

They many not have been "accurate," but they were plausible within the rules of their own universe.  Robert Meyer Burnett refers to it as "verisimilitude," and the new Star Trek doesn't have it.
