      I realize the statement "before" the Big Bang may or may not be meaningless depending on if time started with the big bang or not. Better to just ask whether the void is fundamental to a theoretical non-space time matrix or non-space matrix. I call it a matrix because its nature is incomprehensible except mathematically. Thought I would avoid you having to explain "there may not be a 'before' the big bang" business, which I know about, but still fall into the trap sometimes. I read about a theory in Discover or Sci Am once about the big bang resulting from two other universes bouncing off each other and who knows what the speed limit is in that scenario. It's interesting to think about if we may be on a collision course with another universe and how quickly that would affect us in our little corner of it.

      I think that to define space-time we're going to need to start with understanding forces and why and how particles can attract or repel each other. That's a whole other discussion. Perhaps someone wants to copy/paste all this into a thread and we continue there.
