Wow.  "2001" would make a very long movie night by itself.

I read all the books in the series, but I preferred the 2010 movie myself. 2001 was so far ahead of it's time, technology wise however.  2010 I just like the director's vision and characters of the story better.

2001 came out before I was born..I was born in 71... but my dad, being a huge space travel nut, had made all these home designed models of the spacecraft from the movie.   A few were box set models you could buy because they looked exactly like the movie, but several he made out of old panty hose eggs(the lander from the lunar scene) and various other gathered parts.  He had this all sitting in a box in our basement and I discovered it and that's how I learned about the movie, which he then showed me and my brothers.  I then went and read the book.  This was in 1977 or so...10 years after the novel/movie.  I remember at the time, that movie seems like it was from eons ago..but it was a mere 10 years. That's the perspective of age for you. When 2010 came out, we were both really excited to see it....having read the book...and it didn't disappoint.  It's so strange to think of how as I discovered what my dad's hobbies were and they seemed like he had them from way before I was around..but he was only a man of 23 when 2001 came out...and didn't yet have 5 kids ..so he had the energy and time for those sorts of things.

2061 and 3001 were both rubbish in my opinion. I excitedly read 2061 when it was published, but hated it.  3001 I only read because I thought..."eh, I should finish the series out".
