I would never let out the ants with the risk that my dust bunnies would eat them.

My thoughts exactly. Just bought a bunch of Edison-style light bulbs since they stopped selling them in the local shops. 1/4 the price and all I have to do is wait awhile. Should have done this all along.

I'm in the middle of doing my 486 stuff now, next is the pocket computer stuff. Every 5 or so years I go and straighten everything up.

Cool! I never owned one, but I've always liked the TRS-80 Pocket Computers.

(One could probably build a modern version pretty easily with today's microcontrollers. Another geek project for my nonexistent free time.)

    1. Keatah

      Keatah

ANd when you breathe it in, you are actually inhaling a tiny part of the item & thing itself. Like the first few layers of atoms that evaporate or sublimate off the surface.

My MO is to get the nicest "budget gamer" thing for $150 available ... or the next best thing in a laptop. Thank goodness cheap GPUs have reached the "good enough" phase for me; I'm not chasing higher resolutions or butter frame rates or crypto mining.

    3. Keatah

      Keatah

I tend to go after higher-end stuff, used, a year or two old. Then watch the new features in the new tech get debugged, market-accepted, tested.. Either approach gives lower prices. One gets you the latest standards and APIs, another gets you higher performance.

Either way, staying behind the leading edge is a good thing.

All 7 boards I worked on today had minor damage to a coupla 2-3 traces near the battery.

You'd swear it was designed that way on-purpose.

    3. Keatah

      Keatah

The type of damage is simple to fix but system debilitating. And I bet tons of these ended up in e-cyclers because not economical to repair.

Kickstarter has its place, but don't expect projects to be on-time. I have a Kickstarter going with a reputable company:delay after delay. Products were supposed to ship last summer, and now they're talking this spring.

I kickstarted the Battletech game in 2015. It was due to launch in 2016. Finally came out in "early 2017" - finally came out in spring 2018. Worth the 13-15 month delay I guess.
