  4. Aalleluia praise The Lord.. Uhh-aalleluia praise The Lord! A-AALLELUIA praise The Lord.. Ri-ight where we are.. (sing-a-song fasion) Ahem. Not Mayhem. I just updated Internet Explorer 8 with a KB Cumulative patch and now I AM READY! Absolutely ready! Ready to get *IT* ON! MS rocks!

      RodLightning

Awesome! How many KB Cumulative updates do I download to feel safe again? I am willing to spend the entire weekend if necessary.

    2. Keatah

      Keatah

Dunno. I just do them in my spare time for fun or when I encounter a problem. Soon enough you'll see XP cumulative .ISOs available on the nefarious sites.

  5. AbrahamLinksys for prez!

  6. Absalootly! For me a cup of soup or tea does nicely. VCS color cycling in the background and of course a Seven of Nine episode or a Physics episode. Love it! That *IS* the life!

Academia are close minded and have to follow their discipline's accepted belief systems or face ridicule, no tenure, no office, no office hours, no benefits package.

  10. After 1 month with Windows 10 I'm beginning to enjoy it. It makes use of the latest technologies whereas older OS'es don't. Naturally. Of course I did some tweaks and such, but nothing out of the ordinary or esoteric.

Since I tried Windows 10 (Once Uggg!) and it wouldn't stop making annoying noises,...I call it the Jar Jar Binks of Operating Systems LOL!

      BydoEmpire

I've been using Win10 on my cheapo GOG.com laptop for a couple years, and of course we use it at work every day. Really, other than the frequent updates I haven't had too many issues. At this point I'm a long ways from a "power user" though, my needs are few.

    3. Keatah

      Keatah

I’m only a power user when it comes to simulations and physics modeling. Everything else we do works fine on a 10 year old rig.

      save2600

@flojo... only ever use it in a case. I've got a nice UAG for my 8. The one with the trapdoor for cards and money. Still awkward due to the funky weight distribution and size, but it's easier to grip at least. As for things like the spell check and keyboard, my point is that I think they were much better in previous iOS's. But yeah, may as we'll disable it. And yeas, the last wto sentences are wha you get with special check enabled. It's that bad. ;-)

  12. After reading more stupidity on the internet I fell asleep and had a dream about driving my 4x4 through one big mass of overcooked oatmeal.

  13. Ahh crapola my main emulation drive got buggered. Lost power while updating it. Now it reads as blank/raw.

    1. goldenegg

      goldenegg

Meh ... It doesn't bother me. That's what backups are for. I'm pretty anal with my data, so all my important stuff is on at least 2 device, with very important stuff also replicated off-site. All this costs me is 3 hours waiting for the drive to reformat (full format, not a quick format).

    2. Random Terrain

      Random Terrain

You don't have an uninterruptible power supply?

    3. Keatah

      Keatah

Sadly not on all my systems.

Imagine 20 years of music, classic gaming stuff, journals, videos, research projects, art projects, photos, theoretical cosmology papers, and novelettes and short stories all being all gone.

It's time to reformat, zero-certify, and pull out the backups. Disaster Averted.

  14. Ahh shit.. another nightmare.. This time about me running all over the place sealing invisible holes so that the devil wouldn't invade the house.

  15. Ahhh... Massive relief! It's all over now, the hard part is done and done with forever and ever. Now I can sit back, enjoy some WhiteCastle Sliders. Play some Atari ROMS. And generally be a slob.

  16. Airbus 380 have crack in the wing spars already..!

    1. Stephen

      Stephen

No worries - Airbus says it's not in a structural component, and only the wing skin can deform. Sounds totally safe to me :)

  20. All cozied up in my reading loft. Reading Frozen Star intro and MoonSeed. Running my fully loaded Apple II+ for extra heat. A mini space heater! A plate of Spaghetti and Root Beer. Ahhh..

    1. Random Terrain

      Random Terrain

You have a reading loft? I just shoot a bunch of glue on the ceiling in the corner, then grab a book, jump up, spin around in the air and hang from my butt, back, and legs until the glue can no longer hold me.

    2. Keatah

      Keatah

A chillout room with mini bar wall-wall shag fleece carpeting. Mood lighting. Low ceiling. 3 cozy alcoves. All my computing and gaming and space voyages happen there. Very well insulated with a few small porthole windows. 100" LCD running Orbiter Space Flight Simulator or other graphical extravaganzas.

    3. retrorussell

      retrorussell

My dad and I built a loft out of attic storage space above the garage and I put in carpeting to turn it into a (very) low ceiling art room/getaway. TV, laptop, notepads, sketchpads, mini-easel, etc. up there. It gets super-hot or super-cold depending on the season. A small heater I put up there recently shorts out the power to everything else. Sucks!

  21. All hail Cryptolocker! Never before has a piece malware made my agency look so good!

  22. All the unique minor problems of restoring old computers.. It's like a puzzle! What can you do with basic shop materials..?

    1. save2600

      save2600

Oh and on the subject of basic materials, having bins full of misc. washers and screws really come in handy. Same with magnets to help pick up whatever you've dropped.

Sold my big gaming rig since now I travel a lot. Actually just bought a cheap desktop (i5 3570) but only to rebuild it as a portable retro CRT box

      Flojomojo

My MO is to get the nicest "budget gamer" thing for $150 available ... or the next best thing in a laptop. Thank goodness cheap GPUs have reached the "good enough" phase for me; I'm not chasing higher resolutions or butter frame rates or crypto mining.

    3. Keatah

I tend to go after higher-end stuff, used, a year or two old. Then watch the new features in the new tech get debugged, market-accepted, tested.. Either approach gives lower prices. One gets you the latest standards and APIs, another gets you higher performance.

Either way, staying behind the leading edge is a good thing.
