  1. That moment when you're troublesooting a floating FET circuit. And at the last instant you find an acid-eroded trace in the 2nd layer .02 mils wide!

Yeah, I too have seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser Gate. Stuff like that.

      LOL! @youxia, nice one!

It was a remarkable experience of the sensitivity of CMOS. Bringing a 2x2 inch piece of GladWrap near the break was enough to set it off and prevent disconnection.

  2. Those Amazon vans are kinda creepy how they slither around town.

  3. Enjoyed the lunar eclipse yesterday. We tried out some new cameras and lenses too.

I went out and looked at 9pm PST. It was very red here, like a dark burnt orange colour.

  4. Suck your suckers! Tin your tips!! Corral your Daughters!!! It's National Soldering Iron Day! Celebrating one of the most feared and overlooked tool in the technician's toolbox. A tool vital to maintaining Classic Computers and Consoles.

    1. frankodragon

      frankodragon

I even heard from a friend about someone else whom accidentally touched his tongue with a hot soldering iron.

    2. derFunkenstein

      derFunkenstein

Dude don't lick the soldering iron to get off the molten solder that's stuck to the tip.

I'm still waiting on desoldering braid/pump to arrive, so no battery replacement tonight. Instead, I bridged the solder point and TSOP-flashed my OG Xbox.

  5. I had this dream about a new communications element called Niatinonate. But I don’t recall its number on the Periodic Table of Elements.

      GoldLeader

Awesome! I once had a dream about (seeing) a name of a medicine...And I woke up sitting up and almost yelling "___ Is the cure for the common cold!"

Niacin is supposed to be good for your heart, if it doesn't tear up your stomach first.

  6. IBM, with their conservative wisdom, thought the 386 was too powerful for the average consumer. Thus they didn't develop OS'es or hardware for it.

  7. What home PC applications could use 64GB RAM?

    1. jd_1138

      jd_1138

I want one terabyte of RAM, so I can be the John Holmes of the interwebz.

    2. CPUWIZ

      CPUWIZ

I work on rather large projects and 32GB is barely enough, when compiling code in multiple instances of Visual Studio etc.! But then again, just because I am at home, that doesn't really count. :P

    3. Flojomojo

      Flojomojo

Let it be said that the only applications that matter, VIDEO GAMES, run just fine in 8GB of memory on everything I own.

Great theme. Pretty good show, too, although Season 1 was probably their best.

  11. Intel's processor naming scheme is one huge clusterfuck. Too many models too many variations of architecture under one generation name. And specs that downright deceive!

    1. BydoEmpire

      BydoEmpire

I've long since kept track. I think the last time I really knew or cared what model was what was around the Pentium 3.

What would MAME be without emulation of digital rectal thermometers?

  14. Mame is bloating even more with emulations for exercise bikes and DMMs.

  15. 0.74-2 DOSbox is out. With a promise of 0.75 soon. A goddamned miracle!!

  16. Atomic clocks are so accurate now that they can measure distances in millimeters.

    1. Keatah

1mm closer to the center of the earth means higher gravity. And thus a slower oscillation.

Can we finally do the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs?

    3. Keatah

      Keatah

That was always a valid and correct statement. It's like the traveling salesman problem of visiting all the cities in less than X miles. Efficient route planning padt Gravity wells may require a really fast ship like the falcon.

      derFunkenstein

I wish Analogue would re-package the Nt Mini in a plastic shell and re-release it at a lower price point. $200 for that with all the various 8-bit cores available is very reasonable.

  22. Did you know that Arcade 1up machines are 3/4 size because of licensing restrictions?

    1. NE146

      NE146

Well if they were any bigger then people would start thinking they were actual arcade cabinets.

    2. PlaysWithWolves

      PlaysWithWolves

Not sure about Keatah's source, but Arcade Repair Tips was told that the licenses come from a keychain-arcade maker. So there's limitations to how big the cabinet can be.

You know there's an arcade only build? Still need to filter out all the mahjong and casino games though. If you take the time to get a list of all the machines you want to run you can build a version just for you. Only have to do it once.

    2. MrMaddog

      MrMaddog

MAME still has uses for non arcade stuff... I use it to play SMS games that use 3D glasses & light guns because they aren't supported by Retroarch.

    3. Keatah

      Keatah

Fairly certain mame is the only astrocade emulator.
