I was thinking more along the lines about access to recover the remains of her wireless system. The superstructure of the bow section has seen a lot of deterioration. Previously accessible areas like the captain's quarters and gymnasium have collapsed.

If the ceiling of the Marconi room has fallen in by the time they attempt recovery, it's game over before they ever started. But if they can still gain access, no matter how deteriorated the remains of her wireless system have become, it's worthy of preservation and has quite a story left to tell to future generations.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but my nephews are familiar with it, and last night, they wanted me to show them the Easter egg in "Adventure." I was only too happy to oblige. :)

      Eltigro

At the National Videogame Museum in Frisco, they have a little corner devoted to Adventure and the Easter Egg with an Atari with Adventure set up and a sign telling you the steps to find it.

The movie. I could not finish the book.

It is a bit much, the action is not any different than an ADD enhanced superhero movie. A lot of things going on and no breaks to let you absorb it all.

No no. No minimodems. And v.92 modems are still a brisk seller.

      jaybird3rd

That doesn't surprise me. Point-of-sale terminals still make widespread use of analog modems, presumably for secure credit card transactions.

  7. Received a box of 8" disks. Unknown as to what's on them.

    1. Keatah

      Keatah

Ideally you'd just use the original system and read them that way.

Some labs still do that. Just like they keep other vintage hardware around for the same reason.

Other labs, including ours does that and has an atmel microcontroller to do the track stepping and reading.

Not unlike that Kryoflux crap. Just more precise.

    2. Keatah

You can't really do direct usb control because there is no timing standard. You've got to have a controller that can buffer at set intervals.

But you use usb to talk to the controller.

      Thorsten Günther

IMHO most animals have a very good perception of time and season - much better than the average human account them for, at least. Remember tiger sharks gather off shore when albatross fledgings start their first flights. Off-topic, but this reminds me of this:

    1. Keatah

      Keatah

On my archive disks: I compacted, sorted, and "file placed" all the NTFS $MetaFiles toward the front. Put all the directory entries close to the $MFT. Compacted the $MFT. Consolidated free space up front. Did a read surface scan. Checked SMART. Verified and updated Backups. Did CheckDisk in read-only mode. Checked for illegal characters and path lengths. Deduped some folders. Removed old unused $MFT entries. Removed useless alternate data streams.

    2. Keatah

      Keatah

Each disk takes about 1 hour to work through. The surface scans run overnite, don't know how long they take, but they're done come morning. They always pass. And for the infrequently used disks, it's good to get them up and spinning.
