Exclamation points aren't enough to make boring stuff exciting. You aren't the Magnavox Odyssey 2!

  3. 70's rock bands.. Buncha old guys lurching around on-stage. Any 60's groups still dragging?

      BydoEmpire

I like concerts, but it's really hard to stand for 3 hours. Kills my back. That said, I still love live music.

Local ampitheatre has cover bands -- Beatles, Eagles, Chicago. They probably sound better than the original bands, since they're 30 years younger. Plus admission is only $8 and not a bad seat in the place. You can sit down and watch.

Maybe the Who or the Rolling Groans?

  4. All the unique minor problems of restoring old computers.. It's like a puzzle! What can you do with basic shop materials..?

    1. save2600

      save2600

Oh and on the subject of basic materials, having bins full of misc. washers and screws really come in handy. Same with magnets to help pick up whatever you've dropped.

    2. Flojomojo

      Flojomojo

      Hammer. Blendtec. Dustpan. Done.

    3. Keatah

      Keatah

Bagghhh on the bins of washers. I just use paper! And you get to make your own thickness too!

  5. Packard Bell computers weren't so bad. Sucks that so many became e-waste. But for whatever reason, people loved to hate them.

    1. bigfriendly

      bigfriendly

I was selling computers at Circuit City in the mid 90's. We commonly referred to Packard Bell computers as Packard Hell's or Packard Smells. They were definitely bottom shelf crap.

    2. Flojomojo

      Flojomojo

Wikipedia LOL: According to Fortune magazine, Packard Bell sometimes benefited from misplaced name recognition, with consumers (especially first-time computer buyers) and even some salespeople erroneously associating the company with others of similar name, such as Hewlett-Packard, Pacific Bell, and Bell Laboratories. The confusion was further facilitated by Packard Bell's then-current slogan, "America grew up listening to us. It still does." The company also sold nearly identical...

Yes. Some people thought it was a prestigious name full of heritage and culture. Very stately.

  6. I just bought a $1.83 item on eBay. And all of a sudden I'm a highly valued customer. I feel terrific!

    1. GoldLeader

      GoldLeader

I do wonder,..A valued customer as claimed by eBay or as claimed by the seller? Either way you should feel like a hero :)

    2. Keatah

      Keatah

As claimed by the seller. And I do!

  7. I just love this wind and rain. It starts up, then stops, and repeats all day. It sounds like a metal rollercoaster whooshing by! So cool!

  9. MemMaker, DoubleSpace, Emm386, FTW! These were defining "moments" in my own PC "history". I felt more god-like than even the most stuckup asshole sysadmin.

      GoldLeader

      And that's saying something haha!

  10. It's fun to write short stories about classic computers featuring fictional capabilities way beyond what they could do in real-life.

    1. DZ-Jay

      DZ-Jay

Yeah, but then it would take forever-and-a-day to take over the world. We could easily pull the plug while it's computing its next move.

People do that about modern computers all the time. ENHANCE!

    2. zylon

      zylon

I still use a vcr to play tapes I made of all my old cartoons. When they wear out, I'll toss it.

  16. I seem to have amassed a number of SoundBlaster ISA sound cards. I remember what a cool upgrade that was BITD!

    1. Trebor

      Trebor

Ah, I miss my Ensoniq Soundscape from my P100 days. Coupled with my ATI Mach 64, I was really blown away back in '94.

      CaptainBreakout

Love those ISA SB's. Fav is the SB awe64 gold, and works great alongside a GUS ACE and Roland SCC-1. There is a modern reengineered wavetable daughter board being produced... I think it's called the dreamwave, something like 50 bucks on eBay.

    3. roland p

      roland p

I once wired a daughterboard to my amiga, when I discovered they accepted midi signals.

  17. I spent the entire Friday evening sorting bits and cleaning my Dremel Moto-Tools. Is it ok? Or should I have been doing stupid things like getting drunk?

    1. Keatah

      Keatah

I'm rather impressed at the ease of disassembly and potential repair. Everything is modular fits together nicely with no snappage or forcing.

    2. GoldenWheels

      GoldenWheels

My drunk soldering is almost as good as my sober soldering. My drunk dremeling...not so much.

It was the first thing I did before starting gaming, and the last thing I did after. Somehow, someway, procrastinating with that made the session longer it seemed.

      Jess Ragan

Wow, they're sure sucking the fun out of those stores.

    2. jaybird3rd

      jaybird3rd

I've wondered why more e-tailers don't pick up vacant retail spaces on the cheap and expand their local distribution.

(Of course, it would be better if Toys-R-Us had survived and used the stores as their *own* distribution centers, but since they won't be using them anymore, it might as well be Amazon.)
