  1. Symantec declares anti-virus software dead.

    1. Nesbroslash

      Nesbroslash

That's why Adblock and NoScript alsoe helps.

    2. NE146

      NE146

I've asked this so many times over the years.. "can someone show me a site that installs a 'virus' automatically". The amount of positive answers = a big fat zero. I don't deny they exist, but they're like the Yeti.

    3. SoulBlazer

      SoulBlazer

NE146, that's cause both times it happened to me it was fixed within a few hours. Popular sites that see a lot of traffic during that time, though.

Hahahahahahahahahaha! Just remembered, we've got some leftover taco dip from New Years. I better got on it! lol

  4. Taking a survivalist attitude with basic pc hardware. Those early 21st century e-Machines could be valuable again. Not as a collector's item, but as a practical workhorse not needing the cloud.

    1. jaybird3rd

      jaybird3rd

I've "accidentally" done the same. I've amassed lots of pre-2005 motherboards and other components. They'll never make computing powerhouses, but they're reassuringly old and autonomous.

    2. Keatah

      Keatah

We are well into the era of "good enough" computing. Most new hardware sits around not knowing what to do with its own clock cycles. We're waiting for software functionality to catch up.

    3. MattelAquarius

      MattelAquarius

Skynet has noticed the same thing... Those cycles are no longer sitting idle...Also, NSA.

  5. Talkin to the wife is like baking a cake. Open the oven and all the hot air gets out!

  6. Tapas bar or topless bar?

    1. DesertJets

      DesertJets

Less likely to return home covered in glitter and regret from a tapas bar. So I vote tapas.

      FALSE CHOICE

      why not both?

    3. Keatah

  8. Technology is working hard to give us driverless vehicles, but technology has already made us mindless pedestrians..

    1. Keatah

      Keatah

The wife has one of those. And thankfully she's very cautious about when and where she turns AP on. Probably one of the few using it as intended if I may say so.

The article is a bit click-baity, because, it highlights 2 things in red - "burst into flames", and "Amsterdam".

    3. Keatah

      Keatah

The "burst into flames" link leads to something about kids vomiting in the street and Cannibis. The second point "Amsterdam" talks about sex robots being used in brothels. In Amsterdam no doubt! While I didn't click on those, hovering over the url is all-telling.

Also IIRC, if it wasn't for Missile Command we may not have had Ms. Pac-Man.

It's like that episode of Robotech where the bridge bunnies have to use the trackballs for the point defense system on the SDF-1. :3

At least there's tacos. Lots of vitriol and (probably well warranted) cynicism, but tacos nonetheless.

  16. That Computer Chronicles is one load of hot air. Everything is so perfect and harmonious. Nothing like the real world!

  17. That fathead Tramiel said he built the C64 in order to stop the Japanese from competing in the U.S.

    1. wood_jl

      wood_jl

"The Japanese are coming. So we will become the Japanese." It worked, or MSX would have been established here.

    2. Keatah

      Keatah

Actually the Japanese and Chinese had problems translating their languages (and varieties of tongue) into the limited (PC) hardware of the day.

And to adopt the Western way of computing A-Z & 0-9 ASCII set would have been an affront to pride.

  19. That moment when you're troublesooting a floating FET circuit. And at the last instant you find an acid-eroded trace in the 2nd layer .02 mils wide!

    1. youxia

      youxia

Yeah, I too have seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser Gate. Stuff like that.

It was a remarkable experience of the sensitivity of CMOS. Bringing a 2x2 inch piece of GladWrap near the break was enough to set it off and prevent disconnection.

The SETI guys and gals don't seem too excited, so at this point we're probably not looking at a new Wow! signal. Still, it's good to know that there are people out there keeping their eyes and ears open. =)

  22. That sucks. I went out for a night on the town this weekend with the wife and ended up blowing a tranny.

    1. Random Terrain

      Random Terrain

We're not supposed to use the word "tranny" anymore. It's offensive to some people.

    2. Brian R.

      Brian R.

Right, Random. It's preferred to say "magical mystery gear shifting contraption."

    3. Keatah

      Keatah

It takes me extra effort to pronounce and say "transmission" or "gearbox". So if someone is willing to pay me extra to utilize those words I'm kosher.

  24. That's 6 simes I tried to delete something tonight that I should not have. I meant to drop them in a folder on another disk and not into the Recycle Bin. Luck the files didn't get far, for they were in use.
