Just remove the PIC chip. It's not needed for stereo. Actually you can remove almost everything except for Pokey sockets and control wires for stereo. I have such a config in one of my units.

What is absolutely needed to use this only for the stereo mod? I am building one like that and would like to only install the needed components. I’ll build a fully functional one later.

    Thanks!

Possibly.  Logic dictates that it should, but there's no good way of knowing what path S-Video actually takes compared to composite without trying it.  Give it a shot, see what happens ;-)

Will do, I think I’ll install the UAV along with a U1MB.

Some lower-end LCD TVs support NTSC, PAL, and SECAM and are capable of auto-detection of each scantype.  Having said that, I can't give you specific model numbers: it's tied more to the chipsets in use and whether or not their firmware supports multiple analogue standards.

I have a Vizio that does work with composite. I would think if I add S-Video, that should work too.

Is this a stock PAL 800XL? Also just out of interest how are you connecting by the way? Composite or svideo? If the latter when using s-video you will only have black and white display if you have a stock 800XL as the chroma line wasn't connected in the factory bitd. Simple to connect it.

Most modern LCD monitors can run both pal and ntsc A8s afaik.

Have you got a modern device to load from? (Ie a multicart, sio2sd, sdrive max, SIO2PC, etc)

It is stock. Both composite and S-Video display black and white. I do have a spare UAV, would this work to display color using S-Video? I have several modern data devices including sdrive max and Side 2 and 3. I will be installing a U1MB.

I'm really liking the direction this is going in ?.  Since you said you are planning on refining it, I would assume that you will shrink the SD card slot to only what is necessary.

Yes, I would like to make it so the board would slide into a slot to hold it more tightly and only the SD card slot would be exposed. I have to learn a few things about design to make that happen.

    Hello JGRAHAM2

Then why not use the PCB Michael designed to make a fully external SDrive?  With a SIO cable or maybe with that extended SIO-connector I saw somewhere.  That way you avoid vulnerable connections and will be able to connect and disconnect the device whenever you want.

    Sincerely

    Mathy

I did consider that and may do it with one of the boards. Thanks!

I suppose you could do that, but what would be the point? The whole idea behind this implementation was to install it internally. If you're going to put it outside, then why not just go for an SDrive-Max or any of the other external SIO-to-SD card drives made for that purpose.

I like the idea of it being mostly internal, but would rather not modify the case. The only thing external, and it would still be out of sight, would be the SD Card extension. I haven’t eliminated putting a slot in the case, I have 14 800XLs, some with modifications on the case for switches, so it wouldn’t be the first time. I’ve already built a few Max versions and like them.

Anyway, thank you very much for designing this and sharing it.

I did make a converter using the Leonardo for the ST keyboard.  It works great.  I should still have the file for flashing the Arduino if you need it.

Also made a converter for my Atari 800XL.  That was harder since it uses a mylar keyboard strip going to an odd size connector on the motherboard.  I ended up cutting the connector off of a dead motherboard.  A few months later I saw a post about someone that had the correct connector end.

I would like to see the files you used.

Ha, you are the fella who replied to my Atari FB post ;-)

Should be getting parts in today and will attempt.. Im VERY well versed in Raspberry Pi, so hope flashing Arduino is just as easy..

It is easy. I’ve done 2, one with the smaller version and one with the full size Leonardo. If you need any help, let me know.

Like some others said those type of converters likely add a good amount of lag.   I know people are just trying to make the most of what they have, but I'd personally get a video mod for that device if possible and something like the Retrotink 2x Mini.  RF was already pretty bad on CRTs, so converting that signal to HDMI is not going to give great results.

I have a Retrotink and have modified some of my computers for more modern displays. For some, I don’t want to do permanent modifications, because they are more rare or I don’t use them enough. I do have a few CRTs, but they won’t last forever. I am not really a gamer, but I noticed very little lag when playing Pac-Man. Reversing direction seems very responsive. Also, this thing cost me $35.00 so it was worth a try and I am more than satisfied.
