Looks like Aero Fighters, damn I wish I still owned it, but at least I have the two sequels.

Sounds corny, canned, and well downright cop out stupid, but Super Mario Bros 3 still is. I still can't decide if I like 3 or 4 (World) more when someone has the similar question of which Mario game you like best?
Over the years I've owned a large amount of the carts for it, a few Famicom too, but tried many more through emulation. So I mean I will list some stuff, and not read others posts so I don't get ideas, but it would help to know what you like or hate as far as style/genre goes.
Keep in mind, some of these range from cheap to sucks in price.
Any franchise game/mascot game with sequels or is a spinoff generally is a wise grab. Duck Tales, Darkwing Duck, Rescue Rangers, Gargoyle's Quest 2(GnG spinoff), Kirby, Dragon Warrior, FInal Fantasy, Mighty Final Fight, your Mario, Mega Man, Castlevania, Contra, TMNT, Gradius, Bomberman 2, Donkey Kong type titles are wise choices. One offs though, things like Faxanadu, Metroid, Kid Icarus, Jackal, Super Spy Hunter(or Spy Hunter), 1943 (or 2), Little Nemo, (Tengens version of) Ms Pac Man, Raid on Bungling Bay, Stinger(it's Twinbee 2), River City Ransom, Top Gun 1 and 2, (Tengen) Tetris are all good choices for at least US stuff to start with. Anything I missed that's on the NES Classic Edition would be wise too.

I guess it's sad, but is there really anything it can't do correctly at this point which is not just utter fluff? I use it and quit using a few others because it was just that clean and excellent.
One I will admit being amused by and this is going on nearly 25 years now is iNES. I remember having picked up a copy between myself and a couple friends since it was a pay thing as we knew it was one of the best contenders back in the day, but it did have its one glaring problem, the audio, it was just awful, so awful that the optional MIDI music conversion it did sadly tended to sound better. It was good though to watch the slow ever present development and still just wonder...why why why did the audio never get fixed. Life went on, things moved, years changed, somewhere in I guess more recent times, the audio was fixed and damn did Marat do a good job. I never wanted to seem like a total dick considering he's an active member here, but I always did wonder what was up with the audio for so long and what finally inspired it to become excellent and what did it take? I actually do keep it installed, usually don't keep emulator dupes but that one I do. It and Magic Engine are the only ones I ever threw some coin at, have my keys for both, not that iNES is pay anymore. Sad that the PCE/TG emulation stopped progressing outside of that retched mednafen that is a hellish pain of a command line mess to use.

I don't remember what that post was about a half year ago, but yes if it's what I'm thinking now.
The top loader, due to complaints about jailbars, if you mailed your system back into them they would pop out the entire back plate around the point of the RF/AC jack and replace it with the common SNES to GC multi-av out port instead. Having removed the RF component entirely and wired the audio and video feed to the new component you get a crystal clear as possible RCA style image just as the SNES would do at the time too. They rarely pop up online, used to a bit more many years ago, but after all the rabid collector cutthroat garbage going on now nearly a decade they do so far less. When they do appear it's super rare within it being rare itself someone doesn't ask huge money for it because some tool will pay it so they can get their special rare Nintendo variant.
The alternative I gave basically fakes it largely. As I said I had an RCA Proscan VCR at the time and I would turn it on first, run the system RF through that VCR, then have the VCR clean the image by then using ITS a/v output to the TV which removed the jailbar noise off the RF problem entirely.

20% since when? I guess if something were so cheap it would chew into the margin closer/around that. 10%FVF on ebay, then 2.9%+29cents on PP. Usually they slice 15% off. When it stings are those like sub $10 items, then it hurts more because of the criminal FVF bullshit on the shipping. Have a $5 item, $3.50 shipping you're at 8.50 at 10% You lose .85cents off $5, and then PP takes another 50 cents or so whatever it is. You're like nearly $1.50 off a $5 item.

Definite news of the day is the Heretic/Hexen drop. Been far too long in happening on GoG and what a hell of a deal at 70% off for the intro so it's very very cheap. I've got 1/2 them already on real media but hey, can't beat that. I was going to post about it had that not been there already.

That has been my jam for much of this year and currently trying to up swing the amount of projects I'm working on too. Right now I have a GBA SP in the mail, in hand I have 2 GBA, 1 pocket, 1 color, and 1 DMG. They're all going to get moderately to heavily overhauled, ugpraded, and refurbished. New bright screens for the non-lit ones, new shells, new whatever suits them. Not going to get all street racing ghetto with added battery leeching lights and not going to take away their using real battery advantages either with lame rechargeable cleanjuice (etc) stuff either. People eat them up and it helps me start a savings account towards some needs that'll come sooner than later.
-
That's I think the only true loss, immersion. You're on a small screen so that getting caught up is a bit lost vs having a 15" CRT/LCD or larger in front of you going at it. Duke it doesn't have the tits and four letter words but is otherwise intact and Doom are as they are so it probably is just that, not getting sucked in due to the little screen portable factor.

6 hours ago, MrBeefy said:Yup some people don't seem to grasp that if you want to reach a wider audience you can't price it like a boutique item. Items like Arcade 1up are not trying to hit the same wide audience like the VCS, Amico, and such are claiming to.
VCS is going to struggle getting people beyond those excited for the Atari symbol. I think Amico is going to struggle reaching their target audience and convincing them they are a better family option than already available consoles.
It will be interesting to see what route SNK takes. New, retro, casual, boutique, etc. They at least have good IPs but that doesn't mean success.
You're thinking is right entirely, and it's basically where I was going thinking about a companion to the MVS-X an AES-X. They could get that out for like $100ish or so, sub $150, that wouldn't be boutique, but it wouldn't be undersold garbage either. You get this nice little black console, a mini version of the AES, and it has a large set of games, maybe more like that ridiculous home stick they did over a year ago where every month you can unlock more as a gift that keeps on giving. I think it would be excellent and easy to do. As far as IP goes, new, it's just better off going the route of current systems, steam(online, etc) shops, whatever.

You know, being honest with you, 100% the same. I like my post, because, well, dragons. I never liked YuGiOh. I tried to get into the cartoon when it showed up long ago and it just felt cheap and petty, always some bs excuse to win or lose the battle, and it was so repetitive it made pokemon seem fresh.
That's why I said I'll end up offloading them, just thinking the damaged big boy there on the bottom I could get decent scratch out of it for parts but I'm going to try and correct that wing, find that tail bit if I can and just display it as the detail is crazy good. They're all hogging my shelf I usually dedicate to my big box pc games in my work/storage closet and around where my repair/cleaning racks are as they're not small. They're like 7 to 13" high depending on the model.
I had a bitching bit a luck yesterday evening due to facebook and the better half of it was the dude side mentioning offloading some other stuff and he brought up he had the thing, only wanted $25 to the $35 on the handheld, I couldn't agree fast enough.
$60 -- Game & Watch Pinball + reshelled GB Pocket. The G&W has light scratches on the metal plate on top, inside, bottom are excellent nothing missing.

23 hours ago, Zoyous said:I've got the Neo Geo Mini as well... if you like those controls, you should have no problem with the Astro City Mini. They're just slightly larger than the ones on the Neo Geo Mini.
That's basically all I need to know. Let's be clear, I wouldn't sit on one of those for over an hour, rarely I do on a real cabinet either at this rate. So if long term comfort is a problem, it won't bother me. So if they're like sized or better than NGM, and are very nice and responsive, which I imagine with click microswitches it is (and more so than NGM) it sounds ideal.
I've thrown around the idea of a controller for my mini, if I wanted to stuff it into the TV, but I keep realizing I'm too lazy to care as it's a kickass little desk toy (as would that Capcom one if it comes out an doesn't blow) so that's what I'd do with such things. I basically gave up on those LCD based walmart only basic fun mini arcades as they are very hit and miss, just have 4 of them I retained. I could easily lose them other than the Pac-Man my kid got me so she wouldn't get upset and use that shelf space on these more premium gems that have good stuff that doesn't suck.
My only other concerns are these cheapass stunts not including AC adapter blocks, just USB cables. I was fairly concerned only after seeing that Konami so poorly built their PCE/TG mini if you're like .1 amp or volt, whatever it was, off spec, the entire thing blows up internally and dies as it's that flimsy. I don't know if the Sega one is that pissy, or it's more friendly like my Neo Geo which I ended up using an old HTC (5V, 1AMP) adapter on. Would THAT also work on the Blast City?? Hell would that work on the PCE mini even? I have a couple I've scrouged up at goodwills over the years and they seem to be a wicked catch all.

Ok there, that hits it. I can't read kanji and my kata in general is miserable since I can't ever use it anymore with anyone. So it was probably some Famitsu magazine give away sticker for the controller and that would make sense. Maybe those little characters were like mascots or something of them like 30 years ago.

Very aware of it, very rare, and they get quite expensive because of that, and they were like $1000+ units new too.

What the hell... I know my Japanese is rustier than a pickers paradise but kanji excluded doesn't that say Famicom?? (Fu-a Mi Ko N)

What's wrong with Duke and Doom on GBA, they're amazing. Doom II in particular is a PC port, not Jaguar, and the largest single mod was cutting 1 stage into 2 as it was too big for the GBA RAM.
I think Dark Forces probably would work, but as the stages are more sprawling (which is also why I noted D2) the stages would likely need to get sliced or something to break them in half to fit.
I do think entirely a super metroid style Mega Man would be an instant purchase for many. It would take that old formula and make it really fun again, and approachable by a wider audience. Those wanting a nasty game just wouldn't grind, others who have problems can. Everyone wins on how hard they want it, and more can approach an excellent setup with a modernized style to it.
On that Act Raiser 2 was a disgusting loss on the SNES. A missed opportunity would be a true Act Raiser 2. Bring back the overworld with the Sim City 'lite' mechanics, keep them on the lighter side still, but somewhat more detailed like SC Classic to sorta closer to 2000 did, middling between there, using all those propped up assets and the citizen search to perk up your avatar for the action stages. Make it again about yet another world, just have more continents and locations on each so the game can't be finished in just 3-4 hours. Just take the short cuts of parts of the game probably due to being a launch era title and expand on it, just not too far to alienate and ruin a solid design with bloat.

21 hours ago, Steven Pendleton said:Sure. Just be sure to get a controller for it.
So you truly feel the installed on mini stick and buttons aren't good enough? I'm not like super picky, some sure, but I enjoy using my neo geo mini without the use of the nicer controller they made.
Zoyous sounds like the cotton on there is the same one that ported to all those handhelds and consoles, and in that case you're right. Her fairy friend Silk bribes her into action through her favorite sweets willow. I've over time had the game on NGPC, Super Famicom, TG CD, and something else too I forget. I've got it again ordered fro a very limited physical Switch run next year too. Cotton is hard, but it is a fun one once you figure it out and get used to it, I'm no longer used to it.

Well I'm a fan, but not a huge one. It has to be something fairly unique and fun that I'd go back to. The only time I had like an oh crap moment and did an instant download, Technos Super Dodgeball, I used to be a master at it, used to sadly, but I can still can get some distance as the game is just unforgiving to say the least. I did add that odd Nintendo killed arcade cabinet Sky Skipper and it's strange but alright, even played the one solitary created cabinet of it as it comes to town each year for the local arcade expo. Then there's the VS SMB game, Mario Bros, both Punchouts, and I think that would be it.

21 hours ago, MrBeefy said:I think they have a decent amount of good IPs that can be revamped and be more relevant than what we have seen from Atari and Intellivision. The most interesting remake in my opinion from Atari has been Pong quest and that's a stretch and Cloudy from IE, but it even looks like a $0.50-$5 Steam game.
I don't have a list in front of me but if they still have Baseball Stars, Blazing Star, Metal Slug, King of Monsters, and the various fighting franchises they are already have some more compelling IPs than the other consoles. I don't think it needs to be a mini console, but I would try to keep it sub $250 and more around $200.
I don't see why families couldn't have fun with an SNK console either. I know my bros and I loved KoM growing up.
While in theory I do entirely agree with you, I don't see them being in a place where they could go into actually making a full blown cartridge taking TV based console again, and if they tried to ripoff Nintendo's hybrid design I think it would be a really tough sell even there having mobility+tv play as a choice.
That's why in my post I said a mini console an AES version of their MVS-X would make the most sense. The MVS-X has a lot more, needs a screen, full blown 2P joystick array, all that woods and junk so it would add hundreds to the price, but an AES-X they could hit that $200 or under value and have the system with dozens of games on there like their little tabletop and the MVS-X. But to appease the bigger fans, they do have these data-USB ports on the devices and they are upgradeable and due to that, hackable too. Maybe through expansion carts that are tiny but look like AES carts you could add another 10 per cart or something for a $30-50 charge so people can build a library who are really that into it. It would be cheap and easy on SNKs side as they could just re-release over 150 games, or as they've started doing on mobile mainly, make sequels or spinoffs they can peddle as well. The home TV joystick of a year back and the MVS-X both use that 'hylo' setup so it wouldn't be a challenge to take that easily upgraded solid environment and consolize it, and as that could take existing work on the cheap, it would be the financially responsible and easy route to make a system.

In all fairness I don't even know what the Retron Jr is, is that the stupid little cube they were going to make that's just for all things Gameboy (like that's the name they settled on?)
From what I recall of the Jr it was basically just a gutted Retron5 into like a Retron 3(GB, GBC and GBA) not certain if it even does SuperGB, would be nice if it did, as it would one up the GB Player. I was fairly tempted to look into it but it would come down to price considering I can use a GB Player and a SuperGB over my SuperNT.
The R5 did NOT lag Gameboy stuff of any brand, despite some reports other systems could have potential issues. The audio was correct, color balancing correct, sprites and other visual ends correct too. Now maybe not 100% correct but 99.5-99.9% as I'm sure something somewhere out there was jacked up, but obscurity aside rare few would notice it worked great. It was the last reason I held onto that flimsy piece of crap of hyperkins because the gameboy worked great. The only issue it had was an optional choice, trying to more so fill the screen. The squareness of the GB/GBC was fine, but a blown up GBA game, especially those with scaled visuals (like FPS games) or polygons got into this weird really blocky rectangular stretched hellscape. If you left it as is, keeping your ratios right, like stock GB Player you'd have 4 borders but it looked clean.

So ok be blunt or not, be detailed at least.
Recommend? At least from MY point, I don't give two craps about shimmer. I like playing those NES games on GBA either official or using PocketNES, so I don't care about that. If it plays right, the audio isn't ear rape, and it runs consistently so I don't foul up when I know I shouldn't I call it a win on stuff like this. I love the NeoGeo Mini as it hits it right and I've got the cabinet in hands reach so I have a right to compare and complain pretty easily there for example... same with the 2 NIntendo mini's vs their real world counterparts too. Sega's Genesis mini is a solid run that's for certain, parity with the harder to come by 2019 AT Games Genesis with the non-fouled up emulation too.
So is this some weird myarcade and pick any earlier year atgames dumpster fire, or something to enjoy?
I've been keeping an eye on this, and also to find out about that Capcom one too which appears to be a multi-system emulator (CPS1/2, SNES, Genesis, etc) which is fantastic if it works right.

So who's playing these days on the Gameboy family of handhelds?
Recently I picked up quite a lot of them mostly online though, good variety and deals, still have a few incoming I picked up in a second wave of goodies. I tried to get a mix of stuff I haven't had in ages and then stuff I just never bothered to get before at all too and it has been interesting just keeping my handheld out on the desk and going to town on it when the mood hits. Wario Land 2 seems pretty solid but I've not poked at it a lot, it's just strange having no death.

I had the lousy Retron5 and it handled 3D GBA games just fine. Polygonal (Wing Commander, V-Rally) and also the other style such as Doom1+2 and Duke Nukem.

Strange I thought we had something about it, guess it was individual posts.
GB Studio if you can wrap your mind around it can make commercial quality Gameboy game releases and I don't believe having any coding experience is necessary either which is great.
I've been back on a gameboy trip this last quarter or so and recently acquired over a dozen new carts (mostly here, a few inbound still.) It has been my gaming staple for go to fun since the later mid 90s over console and kind of stayed as such since. These days I enjoy taking old GB, GBP, GBC, and GBA SP model systems and refurbishing them in various ways to either keep or sell to others as it's fun. Games I could definitely give a good bit of recommendations about, but it could get long. I keep a personalized inventory of the stuff I have picked up/held onto all these years so I don't ever end up buying repeats and just for reference. If you go here tanooki.byethost16.com/ , just use the selection on the left and pick which Gameboy model you like as all the games are listed. From there you could just highlight and search on them to learn more. I do actively bring in/keep around imports so it's not just US based stuff.

The 106 is terrible from a game list stand point. Why it replaced the one before it blows me away given the true downgrade in quality of the game list found on the 100in1.
I did find a saved in google image search a screen dump of the game list. This has stuff like the various Phantasy Star titles translated, Golden Axe Warrior, and others the lousy 106 removed and replaced with some real crap.
Sorry about having to listen to this guy, but just watch the video.

Gail Tilden gives interview on the launch of the NES
in Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) / Famicom

I'll verify this as fact. I lived in the so-cal area back in the day, and there was a smaller west coast test launch despite what a bunch of know it all toadies will say that also occurred in 1985 too, not in earlier 1986 before a more picking up national rollout later in that year into the next. Christmas morning of 1985 I got that test boxed up non-branded Deluxe Set with the ROB, but my mom also grabbed SMB1 and Hogan's Alley. I have the cart and manual still all these years later. So it is 100% definitely a 1985 release, but the date to the day I can't say, it was a present. Considering the NES rolled out Oct 18, 1985 it basically had about a two month window to show up.
