What's the Worst Console You Ever Played?
Tanooki replied to VectorGamer's topic in Classic Console Discussion
No there wasn't, and as far as the beeshu goes it's a personal preference I guess, and you're right Nintendo didn't but it seems like common sense to use the Advantage like a normal arcade stick with the left on the stick, right on the buttons (or if you were one of those types, cross your wrists as it works.) And yes you could re-wire an existing pad I suppose. You'd need to jump the traces to swap the 4 dpad directions and also swap the other buttons too. From there you'd either bondo an existing game pad frame or make your own with a 3D printer to set it up so it's backwards for a lefty. -
That's a solid deal he was willing to double down on. If my DK and Pac-Man weren't so pretty as is I'd do it, other than a little glue staining on pac-man more or less they're great given the 40+ years of age. DKjr has a bit of messed up CPO sticker but you can't just buy one and don't want to wreck the rest.

Also they co-announced or back to back an Aleste shooter collection for Switch and I think it's PS4 as well.

I've tried a few and they're just sloppier so I prefer the original. Recently though I did get a screwball PC to NES conversion of the old classic Quickshot and that's an interesting one as it's more for flight games which the system has very few of, but it does work as a decent joystick too and suction cups down nicely.

More SFC Games Announced For SFC Online (Sept. 2020)
Tanooki replied to Magmavision2000's topic in Nintendo Switch
SWEET we get picross. I've sucked at those for years but slowly getting better, lose a lot of time on my phone to a couple free ones about. I still have the original mario picross on Gameboy too, and the first DS release on card as well. -
I think I like that boot jingle a bit more. I'm kind of surprised they never released those original tester colors either sometime during the life as they work.

What's the Worst Console You Ever Played?
Tanooki replied to VectorGamer's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Ehh... my first console was the NES but played arcade for years earlier here and there being a kid and all. I never had an issue with the Nintendo d-pad, it's comfy and easy to use, to glide over to get tight response. That's why I made the comment as it just seemed irrational and wrong. Maybe if you're talking about the non-analog NES Advantage stick which really is just the d-pad design with a big spring loaded 4 way stick over it then maybe as it does blow with certain titles. -
Who cares if they're emulated except if you're looking to complain. I figured as much when I said what I did at least for the GC/Wii games considering they are using some emulator to drive the things on that chinese shield/switch handheld only sold in their region. The games were leaked online shortly after as APK files that have the game+program to run them bottled up in one file. Mario 64 that one I guess is a little surprising given how the assets are so sharply cleaned up and nice looking, but that may still be what it is, a hacked version of each of the three games emulated but running with improvements. I just read back, Atariboys post is on the nose there if anything as a way to go after this and into it. WiiU Zelda GC so-called remasters. If you run them as he said, it's hard going forward to raise arguments there too. I bet this is what they did yet again especially with Mario64. You clean up some art assets, change a few others for new prompts, then emulate the sucker for the system and you're done.

Well if we're going to widen the pool to not just the standard definition I think it's time to throw out the likes of Terminal Velocity (which is like starfox64 in all range mode mixed with descent) and also Zone 66 which is a 2D but 360 degrees of freedom shooter. Both are DOS games, the first is up on GoG.

How expensive is it nowadays? (I remember seeing Gameboy Pockets for $20 on eBay last year, but I'm sure that's changed) Maybe lucky for $20 but it will be beat up so bad to make it even comfortable to use would cost you some. Garage sales, local people who don't care aside, budget $40 on the 8bit era (GB/P/Color) What are the first games I should get? Subjective, sorry, but it is and you're not in your post exactly talking about what you like. For starters quite a few NES era 8bit games got franchise sequels and spinoffs, if you liked those on the NES odds are the handheld versions will please you so start there. Beyond that, my very strong suggestion at least for the few first years of GB, Jeremy Parrish has GB Works on youtube, he goes over each game as they were released from 1989 forward covers them widely from history, mechanics, etc, it's not just some lame-o review. Beyond him though as time only goes so far on those still, ask around more, also look into gamefaqs review sections and youtube longplays (w/out idiots rambling through it.) That'll be a great metric. Should I also consider GBC games? (There seems to be a divide on how the GBC should be categorized. Some say it is it's own system, while others say it should be considered an "enhanced" Gameboy) Definitely, but keep aware of this, GBC came in both a black cart(hybrid working on GB too) and smoke translucent plastic coloring that ONLY works on GBC and those games really do aside from quite a number of lazy kids/licensed garbage releases do push the system in ways you'll be surprised so don't ignore it. Also as a side, there are SuperGB games too, uses the device on SNES to add borders, colors, digital audio samples etc. Nintendo considered the GBC its own system despite the fact it really wasn't because at the core it's got 2x the cpu, 4x the memory, and added DMA to it and obviously color, but the core is original GB entirely. Nintendo historically since has done this too as they considered the DSi and New 2/3DS systems new ones too even if they're not. How should I store them? Whatever you would consider 'safe' really. I wouldn't throw them into a box loose the corners and rubbing can jack up the stickers or chip them if hard on them enough. ANything from original plastic cases, long thin drawers to stuff them in A-Z, or even using baseball card sheets in a binder work. Also some get artsy and use carved out DS cases or 80s tape cassette cases to store them on a shelve with some nice printed art.

Ooooh I care. They rarely do that, other than their like big $100 systems with a mix of arcade and console sequels to those titles like the Namco one from a year back or two. The thing is, this opens a fairly large door to some interesting potential games as this gets Konami in the open and with the vertical screen choice as well meaning either way being possible. Perhaps next could be arcade Gradius? Gyruss? Who knows, but it's nice to speculate.

Am I missing something, because the decal guy I've linked here below, he asks $25. https://www.ebay.com/itm/decals-for-electronic-coleco-tabletop-mini-arcade-donkey-kong/174252146841?hash=item28923cc099:g:rAQAAOSw2xRYQEAg I still think it's a bit, but it's not like everyone makes them. Problem is they're not pre-cut, and he charges another around $10 for cut ones which sucks so maybe it is your guy? He's the only one I've known of for years unfortunately and his images he supplies are a bit lacking so it's hard to say if they're like 1:1 quality or fuzzy/blurry which would suck given the costs involved. I do know though of this other site here, but I've never contacted the guy to know if this ancient geocities site is still valid, if he makes and sells them for the $20 listed price too. Maybe contact this guy and see if they're made, good, and precut? http://www.geocities.ws/colecorestoration/

Same here, but it fell out of favor for me when the idiots who decided bullet hell or the highway took over quite a few years back. I detest games that require rote memorization to survive and that's about what those are, just overkill. I don't mind hard, but blah...

NES has awful controls? Clunky, doesn't work? I take it mushrooms must be legal in your country. -
The Official "Thrift finds" Thread
Tanooki replied to Happy_Dude's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I feel like I'm driving this a lot lately. I've got one I have to share. $150 for all this yesterday. 23 games, and a New 3DSXL which had no stylus and I found earlier ago a bloating battery (getting both replaced for $12.) This was a local thing, spotted it before it was up even 10min. I recently got back into this buying a New 2DS XL system so this is helpful in getting a few things back/new into my hands, and the extra fluff will help pay it off and then some thankfully (or trade to something I do want.) I could use the case/inserts for Yoshi and Mario Maker, would be nice to get a non-selects setup with NES Remix. Also early in the day I was able to get a nearly perfect copy of Mario AllStars LE for Wii, sticker sealed still on top, bottom sticker was ripped away damaging the flap a bit to the white, but everything else is factory fresh looking and it was $30. Right in time for the 18th with the Mario 3D Allstars on Switch. -
The Official Turbografx 16 Thread!
Tanooki replied to Rick Dangerous's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Wow yeah, if the spread is that wide currently I'm not paying that level of conversion tax either. I still have my CG2 even if I'm letting go of the Duo, along with an everdrive so I'll need it at retail or within maybe $10 to even care. -
Are you impressed by the PS5 or the XSX so far?
Tanooki replied to IntelliMission's topic in Modern Console Discussion
Yeah that's a good point, it's not just the traditionally considered 'retro' stuff people still make games based on (the 8-16bit look) but now we're seeing the early 21st century systems having a hard upswing in prices on the games, even the hardware is tipping out of the $20 toilet the stuff tends to fall in too. Those games that are, and often, as always, it's a good bite of it being Nintendo, can not be had off their hardware short of using sketchy means. And as you pointed out, GC... $300+ for Cubivore. The $100-300 range with Fire Emblem, Chibi Robo, Hypergrind, Gotcha Force, and the list is growing. I've seen people paying up at that $100 level now even for stuff like Wind Waker which is stupid and this is not just pandemic pricing as that's collapsing but the games are not. The current systems and the upcoming late this year, they're offering NOTHING nearly of value to say, hey i want to drop $300 on this console, $600 on that one. Most the games, including their own looking at this dying gen for MS and Sony's comments about the next, to PC as well. And they're not going to intentionally gimp the games on PC, you'll get far better frame rate, frame time, resolutions, and control options too. Sure you may drop a thousand on a PC vs a bit less on a console, but the PC does so so much more and lasts far longer, including games not being terminally trapped and screwed a few years down the line. PS4 even bored me, had one about just two years, and 1/2 that or more was a movie box as the games blew compared to PS3 for me unique to it. People mock NIntendo for one gimmick after another, and the WiiU was a dumpster fire, but the Switch has a unique angle, and maybe that's what the others need to to still be desirable by gamers in the longer run because the companies with their high prices, locked games, and trying to force the digital only rental 'buy' of games isn't going to help things either. Perhaps it's time they cool it, make slightly less 'nice' hardware and make a hybrid too people can get equal satisfaction at home and the go seamlessly. -
I recently had that happen, the earlier part of the post up there, lazy a-hole factor of making tracking. I got annoyed not seeing movement after like 5 days, figured it just was a mis-scan since the post office is behaving like the virus makes mail logically move slower(it shouldn't.) The dude of course makes the claim that it was shipped...funny, the next day suddenly it's scanned for acceptance then moving. It's like the douchebag figured I'd not look again and just accept it. You have to be pretty damn stupid not to realize the post office writes days, times, and process attached to each scan. He lied, and that sealed that on the spot. My rule has since day one been to ship that day or the next when I get paid on an item, but since I have my kid who has some issues, even I can't promise it anymore so the last few years I've extended it to a 2 day window on ebay to cover my ass but most times I still can get it going as I wished. It's not that hard, and I'm not even lazy enough to have the USPS pick it up from me. Here for fun is some proof of the stupidity of those types. I ordered Nintendo Power #12 to fill a hole of my early issues late last month. Read the details as they show up pasted from ebay. I paid for it on Aug 28th. I questioned them about it on the 3rd I believe, maybe the 2nd. There was no excuse for that. Are you impressed by the PS5 or the XSX so far?
Tanooki replied to IntelliMission's topic in Modern Console Discussion
I know I replied to this two months ago, but more and more info have come out, also some idea floating and some facts. Now we're seeing prices, and then companies like Sony batting around the idea of shoving their own IP on the PC format too which MS was already doing anyway as they own that OS(Windows) anyway. I can see that happening as it would cause Sony to lose out on a good grab of buyer interest who just don't want an expensive console every few years. From seeing this digital format only somewhat cheaper box, to the non-crippled own your media notably more expensive choice, I don't like the direction of it all, nor how they're trying to goad things from either. The fact they both can't seemingly just like last gen shove out a game franchise update that surpasses the overall play quality of the previous generation is very inspiring.....inspiring to keep with my thoughts of ignoring both and saving some serious time and money. As third parties have more or less given up on both to shovel their wares exclusively to play for the lucrative Steam(etc) PC market where their games can really shine without being held back by old hardware in a new shiny package it's like why bother? It's funny really, unless you're a Nintendo fan alone, there really is NO motivation to buy dedicated gaming hardware anymore. Android and iOS have their other choices as the companies allow(far more obviously with android) and therefore they're ahead of that curve that console makers are going down now too. Unless you can provide such unmatched quality from self driven titles and won't put them on other hardware so that people still buy your hardware, it's better just go go that route. Nintendo has an unique way about it with their games, and their handheld/console hybrid that works. You just can't compress that tier of quality into a handheld that MS and Sony will bow down to copying, the closest being an expensive higher end gaming laptop, which isn't the same. Someone will fire back who get hurt by this saying, but but PC master race, and it'll cost you $1000 to do this. Yeah, no, if you can make it yourself, and shop your parts, you can get it for less, and unlike the console, you can upgrade if needed to add years to it later yet. And in the end, the PC can do hundreds of useful things, the console only does the few limited choices the designer whats you to do (short of hack/modding it.) -
Unofficial/Unauthorized sequel games
Tanooki replied to Serguei2's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Maybe a bit gray area for the rules of the topic, but on the NES there was supposed to be a sequel to Punchout on that system, but the game in development went so far into the garbage heap of bad design Nintendo which had originally been allowing it, cut ties and put a stop. The company having wasted their time and effort making it, decided to rename it (from Mike Tyson's Intergalactic Power Punch) and the main character (Mark Tyler instead of Mike Tyson) so it was no longer Punchout. Instead the very forgettable and not great Power Punch II arrived instead (despite being no Power Punch 1.) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_Punch_II -
The videos I've seen online seem to confirm it's the Shindou version, or at least some hybrid of it. If Nintendo has or will announce (or we find out day one or an early leak) it rumbles, you kind of have your answer. That version fixed a thing I didn't know you could even do in the original which is a reverse long jump since that's only supposed to work forward and the Shindou release fixed that bug/exploit removing it which the 3D Allstars release can't do either.

Game design choices that completely ruin the game?
Tanooki replied to Razzie.P's topic in Modern Console Discussion
Hah I'll third that. I remember a huge issue with it in the PS1 games, and Final Fantasy VII had some pre-boss whoppers that could go like 10+ minutes easy so if you ate it, insult to injury on that one. Magnifying the suck to it, ANOTHER RELATED GRIPE... long winded combat animations you can't bypass, which again FFVII was guilty as sin with on espers and some high ball spells too (at least later stuff like Skies of Arcadia allowed you to hit the action button to cut it out.) -
Never heard of it, trust me, it's Galactix. https://www.myabandonware.com/game/galactix-343
