  1. Remember, the central premise to the article is not that NES games were bad; it's that the NES was marketed to kids, resulting in a limited market which would slowly rebuild itself with later systems.

If I recall, it was marketed as a toy because of the disillusionment around the term "computer" after the crash.

  2. Things are making sense little by little.

Every time I want to start working on a homebrew, I get caught up in the fact that I'm not the greatest with assembly, and for the life of me I can't understand all the TV-scanning stuff unique to the 2600 even though I am in computer science.

Good on you for your perseverance! I hope this comes through.

  3. I don't see any immediate problems if you wanted to port this to the 2600. However, keep in mind that some things will probably need to be changed. Depending on how complex your game is, you might need to trim it down so it fits on an 8K cartridge.

As for the graphics, you might have trouble rendering the background, but I'm sure with a bit of patience, it could be done.

I'm also sure that turn- and grid-based movement can be done. As a matter of fact, I think it already has been done (just look at Flag Capture, although that was one square at a time.) Also, kudos if you do it in assembly.

    Good luck!

  4. Happy two-month anniversary of the Ataribox crowdfunding campaign biting the dust!

Well, it looks like our work here is done.

Times change. People change. However, corporations stay the same. The ones that don't get bigger themselves go towards making other ones bigger. When a corporation doesn't fit this model, it dies. When a brand no longer holds identity, no bigger company wants to buy it, and its shareholders no longer care about toting it. I believe Atari SA has reached this point.

Now, since the only people for whom the Atari brand still has meaning clearly know that the French company is a trademark troll, who can Atari SA expect to keep them in existence? No one.

My friends, with Ataribox, we are witnessing a drowning fruit bat (which had lost its footing and fallen into the water in 1983) taking its last gulp of air before plummeting to the icy depths permanently. I'm sorry for the morbidity, but death is a part of life, and sometimes a suffering creature needs to be put out of its misery.

I've always said: "The streets of heaven are paved in garlic and chocolate. (Not in the same places, of course.)" However, I've been thinking. There are probably Atari cartridges in there too.

You can quote me on that.

  5. I hear the Ataribox is secretly associated with a Elon Musk and that Disney is in talks to buy it and release their new streaming service exclusively on Ataribox. Oh, and EA has decided to go exclusive on Ataribox and drop development on other platforms. Also, Coke has signed an endorsement deal to ship Atariboxes with every case of Coke Zero. Atari stock should go through the roof with news of this.

You forgot to explicitly mention Elon is planning to fly the Ataribox to Mars. It'll be the first game console on another planet.

This should also boost the stock.

  6. I've never had either of them, so I don't know that I would notice the difference. I meant to look at some photos of the two side by side to see if that difference was enough for me to want one or the other more. I just haven't gotten around to it. I think having all 6 switches on the front is really what I'm missing when I look at my Vader.

Not only are there six switches, but the ports on the back are lower as a consequence of having two boards.

  7. ha, reminds me of the Weird Al song, All About the Pentiums.

    PENTIUM JOKES!

Did you hear about that new adult magazine in Latin? Pentium Housium.

    Pentium. Little. Yellow. Different.

You've tried scrubbing 'em, you've tried bleaching 'em. Why not try Pentium?

586 is Pentium, right? Does that mean 686 will be Sexium?

  8. Hory shet, this thread exploded. I hate taking vacations from AA.

Just seen the controller. Looks like it will be the hardest controller in the world to keep clean.

I can agree. The only thing I dislike about the original 2600's design is that it's a nightmare to clean. All those ridges collect dust within 2 weeks and your brand-spankin' new refurbished console looks old again.

  9. ...and instantly becomes useless if you have a ISP outage. Most game consoles are this way now too.

If this is what they're like nowadays, the console concept should just die. (Except for maybe Nintendo.) It's ridiculous and defeats the point of a console.

  10. This is a widespread phenomenon in both online forums and in real physical life. I once posted a suggestion at an aerospace website - and was immediately shit-canned because "they" thought I had an attitude. Who the hell do you think you are, 7 posts and you're already telling us what to do. Thought I was brash and brazen for even at hinting that something be done differently. Narcissism is alive and well in group-think of all kinds. Me me me me and my way only. Alright then. Do it your way. I'll have fun here, while you stumble around over there.

OK, so what do us new folks need to do in order to appear credible? Other than making sure we don't look like shills or anything?

I think it's safe to assume most of us have real opinions. Looking back on my old posts, I know mine was swayed by this discussion. That's the point of discussion, is it not?

*Sniff... My opinion matters TOO you know...
