Thanks to @BydoEmpire and @dualcam's help, support for CX-40 and ProLine controllers using the 2600-daptor, 2600-daptor II, and 2600-daptor D9 will be included in the next version of BupSystem (and Wataroo, and Rikki & Vikki for Windows).

Authentic PainLine wrist damage - now that's accuracy!

    Thanks.

Not right now, I'm guessing this is because you want to use the program with a launcher? There will be an *.ini parameter available in the next update which will force a full screen launch, but I can't rewrite the parser at the moment.

Yes, I am using Attract-Mode.  An .ini parameter would be fine.  I also will use a 2600-daptor II with official Atari joysticks...either the 2600 or 7800 joystick.  Thank you.

Interesting. I think we'll have to do some investigation for the next release, playing with target and compilers and such, but I'm pretty tied up with projects, so it probably won't be soon.

No problem.  Thank you for looking into it.

The hardware you're using is the issue, not to be rude or anything. Very on the low end when it comes to CPU power and after reading some reviews they're basically only good for browsing, emails and light work. Many reviews have said once you runny any application the fan will spin off its dial at nearly full tilt. Which tells me that little CPU is generating some heat and the cooling isn't all that efficient. A7800 isn't the most intensive but does have decent accuracy and emulators in general rely heavily on the CPU because it's emulating a full system in software. Probably no real way around it other then an hardware upgrade.

I'm sure my CPU isn't the best but it definitely does more than browsing and light work.  The other 7800 emulators run fine as does Altirra, Stella, Phoenix Project, ColEm, ColCV, etc... and that's including running ReShade injecting shaders.  A7800 is just more intensive than these others.

Interesting.  Curious if it's a driver or graphics option setting the other emulators may not be leveraging or at least using differently.  Wonder if that fan is perhaps a graphics chip fan rather than the CPU one.

Under 7800.ini file for video, try changing the "bgfx" or "auto" setting, to "gdi", "opengl", or "d3d", to see if it makes a difference.

While Goggle Chrome is viewing the Atari Age website, running A7800 with Commando is only ~5-6% of my CPU, compared to Chrome's 13-14% usage:

My desktop is a decade old.

I tried all those options but no change.  The CPU runs between 41% to 44%.  I'm using a Lenovo M90n-1... one of those micro PCs.  Thanks for the info on the video option.  Mine was set to auto but trying all the options and reducing sample rate to 22050 didn't make any change at all.  This happens even with the black and orange bars without a game loaded.

  6. Thanks for that info.  I think I'll stick with an emulator that I can run without dropping frames.  BupSystem is nice but development may have ended and I can't get it to launch in full screen from a command-line.

I would have to test; as i haven't played it in a while.

The PS3/Xbox 360 versions are based on the DOS versions of the game, so they don't have maps and i imagine the enemy characteristics are similar.

Post back if you test it.  I'll probably buy it if you can stealth attack the enemies but I'll pass if they're always facing you...like the Jaguar version.

The fire button works but nothing else. This is with the Classic in Xbox mode. Anyone been able to get it working?

So far I have found very spotty compatibility with the Classic on PC, although recently I was able to get it working ok in Steam in Xbox mode. Twist doesn't work that way of course, but I could get it working on Steam. Nothing else though!

What would the advantage be of setting the controller to xbox mode instead of just using it in the default mode?

Okay so running it off of stock VCS800 with USB based WIN10, Atlirra with Reshade is now up to speed and golden so it's all good to go. I'm going the added larger faster memory and M2 drive road. It's good to know that the standard configuration is up to the task. Thanks. Now I know what to say when someone asks.

Yep it's good.  I tried both DirectX 9 and DirectX 11 and both start with the correct speed.  I'm not sure if DX 11 will actually perform better than DX 9 during high stress.

@Atari Nut Any particular shaders you think are good looking?

Right now I've been fooling around with the CRT that is in the default selections with ReShade.  CRTGeom is nice and is in this package...https://github.com/Matsilagi/RSRetroArch/archive/main.zip but it is asking for screen width / height and frame width / height.  I'm not exactly sure what would be the best numbers to use for these fields.  Do you know what the 5200, 2600 and 8-bit official frame dimensions are?  The CRT shader that comes with ReShade doesn't require those numbers...so it's just a little easier to configure.

too slow in all memory/storage OS choices or just the Atari OS? As in are you virtual machine within another OS or a clean WIN boot... did you add more memory or are you stock?

I have Windows 10 installed on an external SSD...no other mods.  Running Altirra in OpenGL mode with ReShade is too slow.  Without ReShade it's fine but using it in OpenGL is slow.  Now that phareon added the option you run ReShade with DirectX, it runs great (thanks phareon).  I prefer using Windows 10 with Stella and Altirra because you get more realistic emulation and all the games.  In Atari OS, you only get the games they have (no Superman or Adventure + for example) and they only have scanlines as an effect.  Stella and Altirra with ReShade on Windows 10 is much nicer...not to mention being able to run MAME on Windows 10.  Also, with Stella and Altirra, I can use real Atari paddle controllers for Breakout or Warlords.  You can't use them in the Atari OS.  There so-called twistable joystick just doesn't cut it.  I'm glad I have the VCS... I think there will be improvements in the future.  But for a real retro look and feel, use Stella and Altirra with ReShade.

    • Added an advanced configuration variable to allow d3d9.dll, d3d11.dll, and dxgi.dll to load from the application directory for ReShade compatibility. In Tools > Advanced Configuration, change engine.allow_display_library_overrides to 'true'

Ahh... Thank you phaeron!  I'll be trying this out later on and report back.

Yes, it is. So maybe Reshade is running in OpenGL. But I can see a change in image quality in Altirra going from GL to DX, so Altirra is definitely changing to DX.

There is also something in the log about "Redirecting D3D11CreateDevice" and "Passing on to D3D11CreateDeviceAndSwapChain".... that's way above my paygrade though.

Maybe they can tell you something more on the forums, but I doubt very much it's possible to adapt Reshade to Altirra, as you have said already.

I'm still not sure though why this method would not work for you. Are you saying VCS is too slow?

Yea, way too slow.  It's works fine without Reshade but as soon as ReShade kicks on in OpenGL, the speeds drops dramatically.  I have a Lenovo M90n-1 being used as my main PC.  It just an Intel Core™ i3-8145U with Integrated Intel UHD graphics but it can still handle ReShade and OpenGL without slowing down.

Edit:  I see that phaeron added an option to allow ReShade to work in his latest Beta build.  I'll be trying it later on.  Thanks Phaeron!

Atari Nut, not matter how good the shaders are the loss of features and improvements of a 9yr old build are not a good swap. In 9yrs Avery there's just so many new features, devices, fixes, emulation improvements etc etc etc..

Would it not be just as easy to ask the Reshade if they can do the option in it and its the program wanting to work with many other external programs so any variation should be built in to that imho, it should be the flexible item..

    You can but ask...

I agree.  9 years is too old.  I registered in the ReShade forums to ask about optionally implementing something to work with Altirra.  I don't think it is possible though.  ReShade works by using a modified version of the DirectX .dll.  That's why it places it in the game directory.  If it placed it in the system32 directory where Altirra is looking for it, it would overwrite the official DirectX .dll... which is undesirable.  ReShade can work with multiple games independently by placing the DirectX .dll in the program directory of each game.  This leaves the original .dll intact for the games you don't want to be modified.  Good thought though!

As I said in the other thread, Reshade + CRT shaders works on my Altirra 3.90, when using the swap trick (install Reshade for OpenGL, then change from OpenGL to DX11 in the emulator).

I don't see why it wouldn't work for you either @Atari Nut.

I can do it again from scratch and write it up a step-by-step  if somebody tells me how to completely uninstall Altirra.  I've tried, but it seems the settings are not stored in the main directory.

@youxia After you swap from OpenGL to DX11 in the emulator and launch a game, exit the game and look in the Altirra folder.  Check out the log file.  Is it still opengl32.log?  If so, it's still running OpenGL, not DX.

Took a look at this -- the problem is that ReShade relies on the program loading D3D9.DLL or DXGI.DLL from the current directory for its hooking mechanism to work. Current versions of Altirra force these DLLs to load from the system32 directory to avoid conflicts with programs that place similarly named DLLs into PATH and a security issue with DLL hijacking via the current directory.

Which was the last version before Altirra forces these dlls to load from the system32 directory?  I'll run that one on my setup.

  17. This is a continuation of a thread started in the Emulation section about RetroArch that morphed into using ReShade with Altirra.  I am trying to get ReShade Home (reshade.me) to work with Altirra in one of the DirectX modes.  I can get it to work using OpenGL when installing ReShade and selecting OpenGL as the only api in Altirra.  The problem is that OpenGL is too slow on the Atari VCS.  I cannot get it to work if I install it as DirectX 9 or DirectX 10, 11 or 12 and selecting the corresponding DirectX in Altirra.  Youxia was able to get it to work with DirectX 11 by somehow installing ReShade as OpenGL and then swapping to DirectX 11...but this method doesn't work for me.  ReShade is working with Stella and DirectX so I'm hoping there is still a way to get it to work in Altirra.

Well, it is working with "the swapping" I described earlier. You have to do it only once per emulator start. I also get the rounded corners in fullscreen.

Probably better to start dedicated thread in Atari section or ask directly in Altirra  thread if you want more info about this issue.

Sure, I'll start another thread.  I can't get any version of DirectX to work...even with the method you describe.
