Oddworld says bye bye to games....
jeepnut24 replied to PuddWakkr's topic in Modern Console Discussion
This is all relative. The # of hours in a game all comes down to how much you want to put into it. Look at King of Fighters or Soul Calibur. You can technically finish the games in about 30 minutes if you want to. The record for finishing Metroid Prime is what, 2.5 hours? Obviously none of these games are ridiculous. It shouldn't matter how long it takes you to get through, but whether you want to come back and replay is what ought to determine worth 841262 It should be a combination of both replay and length of play. Look at some of the best games out there. I mean the BEST games out there and you will see a combination of both in most cases. Tetris being a bad example -

Burnout 2 was huge with the hardcore group. Tons of us loved the game long before EA came around. That and Sims is hardly Revolutionairy. Its a logical extension of Sim City after all... Anyways, EA is notorious about buying a company, keeping the IP and dropping the talent and soul of a game. Its happened many times and will continue to. As for Madden, it started out as innovation, but that was 10+ years ago now. The last few years haven't shown any innovation other than graphical improvements. Now they want Ubisoft... I never said anything about a 40 crap title. Most games that last 40 hours arent' crap though. I can't think of one that is???? -
Is the x-box souless? well lets get your ideas

I would say most XBOX owners don't care for JRPG and quirky games. Hence the success of the box without the titles. Though If you look closely, there are plenty of quirky games. The latest of which is Phantom Dust. Developed in Japan, and then ported to our xboxes. Not to mention the numerous other niche titles. Ive said it before, and Ill say it again. The majority of gamers don't want these titles. Look at the current huge sellers for proof. Sure there are some that sell extremely well, but the majority of the top sellers are not JRPGS etc.. XBOX has plenty of flavor. It is an american designed console after all. It really shouldn't have Japaneese flavor. It simply wouldn't make any sense. Not to mention the market is less dependent on Japaneese titles each year anyway. If you don't think Racers and FPS have soul then don't buy an XBOX because you wouldn't understand it. Stick to something else. I will mention that there are a HUGE number of important eastern developers signed on for titles for the XBOX 360. I would venture to say the next library will be more diverse. -

EA, bought Maxis, and didn't create anything innovative. They haven't for 10 years now. Not to mention their poor treatement of employees, the purchase and removal of talented small groups simply for an IP, constant shovelware, terrible movie adaptations, etc... They deserve what they get. BTW, they haven't done anything for the sports industry other than copy others, and introduce the full price yearly update. Burnout was another purchase that was a great game long before EA came along. Play 2 if you don't believe me. Take a look at Goldeneye 2 for their movie liscence treatments. Some of the LOTR games are also craptacular. Play a game like KOTOR or Splinter Cell Chaos Theory and see how much "Filler" is in either. Look at the logevity of Halo 2 online. Zero Filler material. Not all games have tons of filler content. Its depends on the developer and the genre. Some games like MGS 2 endup like a B movie rather than a game. Id still choose a 40 hour title over a 10-20 title anyday. Not to mention Im enjoying harder games as well. -

The xbox has plenty of personality. Look no further than Phantom Dust for quirky awsome games. Seriously, go pick it up. $20 and a great full title. The XBOX has had personality from Day 1. It appealed to a different group than the traditional gamer though. Brought me back from the PC world. Not to mention it has some of the best innovaition in the last ten years of the console market. LIVE and the built in HD being the big two that will effect gaming from here on out. Not to mention, its ironic to see MS as an inovator rather than a follower. You may not like the XBOX or LIVE, but you can't deny the lasting effects of both on the industry. Love the break-away controller cables too. -

My favorite example of this issue is Enter The Matrix. It had a HUGE budget, HUGE holywood influence (Movie Directors directed the game), HUGE marketing push, HUGE names and faces in game, etc... AND it is ranked as one of the worst and least inovative games of this generation. Its sad when the guys who created bullet time can't even get it right in their own game. Look to Max payne for great bullet time. As for product placement in game, Heck no we don't need it. Do you really want the influence of mountain dew and their wishes to push the game industry??? EXTREME Splinter Cell 4.... brought to you by Ubisoft and Mountain Dew -

I currently have 60+ current gen titles, with at least half at full price. I know many that I game with online also don't mind paying full price for a game. At that point though, we want the most for our money. I hate paying $50 for a game that 1) Doesnt' last more than 20 hours, and 2) Has no online to extend the gaming time. Im almost to the point where I won't buy a game if it has no online option. As a matter of fact, MS is going to force developers to at least make their games online aware so friends can send invite to you while in game. Great idea, plus I can see if my friends are gaming and send them invites. The desire for more from a game isn't going to cause any crash, it will simply thin out those who cant fund large dev teams and large scale projects. -
Any way to mark all forums as read?

Thanks much. I missed that little option. Still trying to get used to the new look. -
I consider mine complete with the US releases, but that is what I collect after all. Unique titles and no lable variations. But again, thats me. BTW, did the multi packs have 4 carts in them?

Halo 2 was too short if anything. I beat it in two sittings. 90% on Nov. 9th and the rest on the 10th of November. Only to find out it doesn't have a real ending. A $50 title needs 40 hours of Single Player to be worth the money these days. I want more detail, more control, more options, and longer games. Too many games are too short these days. Its a sad day when you can finish a $50 game in under 20 hours. On top of the SP, it needs a solid MP option as well. I have around 200 hours logged in Halo 2 online at this point. Only to put in at least another 200 after the new maps start shipping next week and through the summer. These days, replay value is in the online portion / MP of the game, not the single player for the most part. Though with more gaming allowing for so many choices, that is changing. Fable, KOTOR, JADE Empire, etc.. allow for very different paths through the game, and lend to multiple passes at the SP. I would seriously hate to see games only take 2-3 hours to finish. Many hardcore gamers put more than that in each day. With the power of modern consoles I don't see it being wasted on a short game for less money. The only thing I would and am starting to hate more, is funding from outside the industry. Look at some of the bombs that have been the result of the movie industry in the game world of late. Not to mention, DO we really need pepsi ads in game???? -
Is there a way to mark all of the atari age forums as read??? rather than forum by forum? It would shore help out a lot.

Great games IMHO. But ultimately you have to sell ###s to stay alive. They cant seem to put up the numbers. Most seem to think that they might farm the development out, some think they are heading to the movie industry? Either way, its bad for gaming because they actually try new and crazy ideas and they execute them to a very high quality. Oh well.... This is just more fuel for the "soon to be a crash" fire. How long can Mario/Halo/GTA clones/sequels can keep the industry afloat?? -
MS hasn't really talked about the next version of LIVE and if it will work with current version. Same with backwards compatability. If I didn't have LIVE currently, Id get a two month free code from someone and use it until E3 when we get to find out all the details about XBOX 360 and the next itteration of LIVE. Then you can cancel after two months if you don't like the future plans. Nothing set in stone about XBOX 360 supporting old titles though. Though considering the success of Halo 2 on LIVE amongst other games, I would say the support for them isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Especially if XBOX 360 isn't bacwards compatable. Oh, if you have an old 2 month card, call MS and they will give you a new code.

What do I need to get my PSP online?
jeepnut24 replied to Jess Ragan's topic in Modern Console Discussion
You need 1) High Speed internet connection 2) Wireless access point or wireless router 3) Setup both PSP and access point to recognize each other 4) Setup wireless security 5) Game to your hearts content.... A wireless router will be cheaper in most cases than a wireless access point. Both will work, and you can now get a G rated router for fairly cheap. Less than a new game at least. Even less if you look around a bit. -
how often do the cartridges give you problems?
jeepnut24 replied to awsomo3000's topic in Atari 2600
Ive got about 5 carts that Ive clean numerous times over the years with 90% alcohol. No luck with them at all. Ive given up on them for the time being, but Ill try again in the future. -
Journey Escape rocks my atari because it proves rock start can make video games better....
-
I guess you have never got in on the buy 2 get 1 free deals then. Plenty of competition between the two in the used game area.
-
More bad news. Less competition on used game prices, and buy 2 get one free incentives. Oh well, I could really care less at this point as long as people still trade in new games after one week, and we continue to see budget titles and cheap used prices.

I think you do, the cell has 9 cores. It's a monster. 837693 Is that the OFFICIAL word from Sony??? No hard facts have been released yet on the PS3's version of the cell. Let alone the Cell technology in the XBOX 360 or the Revolution. Either way, its still sony and when has sony not lied or exagerated on the power of their systems. Not to mention the ease of development. XNA should help out a bit in the xbox / PC market in that respect. It can have all the power in the world on but if you cant use it, what good is it. Emotion engine anyone????
-
You REALLY need to read up on the cell techonology and the article itself. First off, the physics chip in the link has nothing to do with XBOX 360. Secondly, there aren't going to be a huge number of cells in the PS3, more like 3 or 4 tops. Thirdly, both platforms are likely to be similar in power and capability. Oh, and one other thing, there aren't and hard facts about either in terms of processing power. You might want to wait till E3 before you spout off numbers...
-
And everyone said seperating a graphics chip wasn't going to be a revolution either... I think you all fail to see the processing power needed to run some of todays physics engines. Granted many here have little interest in modern games, but given the power of a seperate processor for physics and game mechanics is a huge step forward. It will lead to better physics, not necasarily more realistic, but more consitent and accurate, not to mention more detail in game, and ultimately more complex games.

EA gets college football exclusive!
jeepnut24 replied to jeepnut24's topic in Modern Console Discussion
Not a hard topic to agree on though. EA hasn't done much good for the game industry of late.
