  1. I know Yurkie is having fun, but good topic. Just learned about some peoples attempts to bring retro consoles to market...

... Quality VS Quantity it would seem.

If you like old consoles, nothing beats the real deal. Modded or Not, the authentic hardware just works. Most retro consoles look better on a CRT than an HDTV in my experience. If one wants the authentic experience, they will own one or more CRT's and be committed to owning original hardware and software... for everything else, there's RetroPie :P

  2. I have the board out and cannot see any bad solder joints, multimeter detects contact being made on all pads... other than the up contact bridge being cracked... I will need to replace or repair it I guess. Other than that, it could still be related to diodes I suppose huh? I have a few more controllers in the post... so maybe I can do some donor work.

  3. I am trying to diagnose a wonky controller and am coming here in hopes of finding answers. Initially I just rebuilt it as my other one, but when I went to test, it could turn right and that was it. I have looked online and found a bit about the controller and how it is wired and functions. I have tested my cable for continuity, noting the 2 pins that don't have a wire connected. I am now diagnosing the PCB and have found my contacts have continuity, and am now trying to figure out how to see which buttons are registering at the base of the PCB where the wires join.

How do I test the board in a way that will allow me to see if there are bad spots in the diode chain? Will that be my best bet? I have reflowed most of the joints, and the board *looks* good, but am wondering if I should just do them all. Thanks in advance.

  4. I am just doing some searches and curious how those who buy used loose games in the wild go about inspecting a game they cannot test...

    - are there any surefire things to look for when looking through a used box?

    - what is a good way to check you can't test them?
    - will versions of games made in different regions still work?

    Thanks

  5.

I'm in Canada and I had purchased mine over a week ago at the local classic games shop. They had a few of these CV FBs brand new, along with different Retron models. Maybe they acquired some very old CV FB stock that was sitting around after ATGames stopped producing them.

If it doesn't make sense for you to produce new overlays, then I wonder if someone can put up a site where we can print some crude overlays ourselves, using a webpage that prints a template (to actual size) for the specific controller - original CV or Flashback CV.

I know this be old, but I too am looking at this thread and like what I see. If you search google images, you will find overlay scans, but they are not the greatest quality. If you are looking for Colecovision full size ones, it's not an easy job, and am still considering purchasing some done right here... The scan's I find have hard to read art and some are a little worn looking. If I were to spend all the time making some without good art, I would probably just make custom ones and have fun with it, since they will never be as good as what the OP is offering.

  6. Hi there, I am a new member. Lurked for a few days and decided to join. I posted an intro thread with a little background about my system find and restoration and a few snaps:

    http://atariage.com/forums/topic/260257-gday/

You all have provided plenty of inspiration and guidance without which I would be lost. So many thanks to you all. Since getting my Colecovision set up and running the other day, I have plunged headfirst in a way... I grabbed a box of mixed goods to refurb/repair/play with, and I've already found myself a copy of Dam Busters at my local - surprising and a pleasant holiday treat for me.

There are plenty of things I plan on doing over the next little bit:

    - Install the AV Mod... Seems like a no brainer.

    - Pause switch... man's gotta pee.

    - Modify a pair of extra controllers with knob handles, top fire buttons, straight wires.

    - Find Burger Time and Q*Bert

    - Figure out where to find more of and how you make a good reproduction controller insert for games that use them.

The Expansion module looks very tempting, and can't even imagine how many 2600 games I've passed up... thought the CV games tend to look much better IMO. The system is technically my step-dad's, but at 77, I reckon he won't be too sad if I hog the system a little... Though he has expressed an interest in Donkey Kong. He called it Mario, then when I corrected him, he said "No... the lil Italian guy is Mario... dummy!". Amazing how these things can bridge the generational gaps LOL.

*Anyone who has made controller inserts themselves, I would love to know more. I have ideas, but wonder if there is anything I am overlooking, or overthinking ;)
