Here's what I see starting the game:

Hey - what exactly do you mean by Game 1? I chose Single Player - Original - Difficulty Normal - Level 0. I did not change the type of blocks. Is that Game 1?
I've never really tried to play this game, so I don't have any real strategies about how to stack things up. Mostly, I'm just trying to clump groups of 3s. Planning diagonals is really hard for me. Also, I'll say that trying to get the high score picture is incredibly stressful. I know that I scored higher at least once before, but I wasn't prepared to take a pic, so I just lost that score completely. I almost want to appeal to you to change the HSC game to be the "Double Down" game within Darts in Parlour Games. It is a bit easier to snap a pic of the final score and may just be a bit more fun. While I suppose it is possible to get a perfect score, I doubt anyone would accomplish it in this club. Consider it this time or for a future HSC.
Parlour Games manual: Parlourgames_sms_us_manual.pdf (segaretro.org)In my version there was a Single player -> Game 1 / Game 2 -> Level X option. I may have worded it wrong, I'll have to check tonight. Pretty much default settings (i.e. Original). I'm not sure there's any real advantage to starting higher than level 0 .
I was able to get a screenshot on the game over screen (I'm playing the US rom on Dega), IIRC it stayed up for a while. This is a game I don't have on cart, so I'm not sure what it *really* looks like..

I can do that - Double Down it is!

Time for a change of pace from shooting things down, or kicking dudes in the face. Let's play Columns. It's a game I played on the Genesis a fair bit, but never the SMS version. Let's play Game 1.
For one bonus point, play Darts Double Down in Parlour Games (a personal favorite of mine). For one ADDITIONAL bonus point, play all three Parlour Games, any variation: one game each of Darts, Billiards & Bingo.
This round runs April 11 - April 28 (sorry, started late this time, I'll let it run an extra week).

Sorry guys, I'm behind on this - crazy weekend last weekend and i didn't get a chance to set up the next round. One week delay...

Got to stage 2 - 628,000. I lost one life because Buster wanted attention and kept head-butting my hand while I was trying to dodge bullets!

Buster was quite amused by Thunder Blade. I think she was pondering whether or not she could eat the helicopters flying around...
QuoteWhat is this group's opinion about turbo or auto-fire? Because it is like a completely different game when using it.
i'm open to whatever the group wants to do. Generally, I'm inclined to say no autofire for HSC games but I mostly play for fun so it's not that big a deal either way.

I made it to the last boss with 5 lives but couldn’t figure out how to beat it (pause button being on console and not controller got me). I think I have a psp somewhere with save states I can beat it on. Overall I liked it but it was a little too long and difficult and the penalty for dying too high. The two player is a ton of fun though and a highlight.
Your picture there is the closest I'll come to seeing the ending screen of Rambo, so thanks for that!

Getting on the board. I'm enjoying Thunder Blade more than I thought I would. It was pretty exciting to get to the 3D stage the first time. I have to learn not to fly too close to the top of the screen in the overhead stages, though, I tended to lose a lot of lives quickly. 149,000.
Played a quick game of Afterburner - I might to do this as a full round at some point. It was the first (non-pack in) game I got w/ my Master System back in '89 or so.

I owned this back in the day, but I remember being a little disappointed. It looked good, but I thought it was really hard (compared to Afterburner, anyways). I haven't played it in ages, so let's see how accurate my memory is with Sega's unique two-perspective arcade game: Thunder Blade
For one bonus point, play any Sega Master System game where you fly a jet.
This round runs March 25 - April 7.

This is fun! I keep thinking of funny Rocky quotes playing this but can't think of any from the Rambo movies. 13200
Hah, when I posted this round I kept thinking of Rocky quotes as well.

It's been a while, and I've never been that good at it, but just getting on the board: 18,350
I did play Rambo III, but picture on my phone - I'll upload later.

This round features games we've played before, but worth revisiting. One of the best earlier SMS titles - Rambo: First Blood Part 2. I like the game a lot, but I've never made it past the second level, so maybe this is the year!
This round runs March 11 - March 24
For one bonus point, play the light gun game Rambo III.

My copy has some scores written in the instruction manual. Apparently MDB scored 290,850 in May of ‘87 and a month later had 1,187,900 points! So that’s something to shoot for at least. I love finding this kind of stuff in used games.1. That's awesome
2. Wow!

Slightly better, I can get to the second stage quite consistently. 17,400
Played a bit of Bruce Lee, too. I loved it on the c64, but it's been so long I don't remember anything other than get the lanterns.

Just checking- is it this homebrew that you're talking about? https://www.smspower.org/Homebrew/BruceLee-SMS
Thanks for bringing the club back!
That's the one! I didn't realize it was a homebrew, I was just in my list of roms and i was looking arond for a bonus game.

A game I've never played (that I can remember, it looks vaguely familiar, maybe I tried the rom at some point). I checked it out briefly, seems kind of like a ninja-themed Rambo. Nothing wrong with that.
This round runs February 26 - March 10.
For a bonus point, play a port of the c64 classic Bruce Lee.

2024 Spring HSC - Round 4 - Columns
in SMS High Score Club

I played a full game of 301 and figured out the controls halfway through. I couldn't get a screenshot of the score in time, but it took me 11 rounds.

And I have no idea what's going on with BINGO, but hey, I started it up...
