Man, this is a tough game to play w/ the keyboard. I sould have picked up the cart.

What does Nintendo have to do with these? They're all published by other companies. That said, diluting the market with a bunch of garbage games is not a good thing. It makes it tougher for the quality titles to stand out. Mercury Wii has been getting good reviews, though, definitely on my radar. The PSP game was pretty cool. In which case, *good* cheap games are always a plus!

what fighting games should I buy?
BydoEmpire replied to bdog_147's topic in Modern Console Discussion
I haven't been a fan of the newer MK games (anthing past MK2 actually), but I've been playing a TON of MK: Armageddon on Wii lately and it's a lot of fun. Konquest Mode in particular is light years ahead of what it was in MK:DA and MK:D. Here it plays like a full-scale 3d brawler - cut scenes, some nice, varied levels and enemies, simple puzzles, and lots of full fights against key MK characters to spice things up. About 10 or so hours of game there alone. I think they did a great job with it. The fighting engine is somewhat improved over MK:DA and MK:D, but still not particularly deep or fluid. It's certainly not VF or Soul Calibur. Regardless, MK: Armageddon is one of those games I don't know why I like so much, but I've been having a blast with it. Tons of stuff to unlock, tons of characters, Create-a-fighter, and the ps2/xbox versions are online (not sure if anyone's still playing online, though). -
Holiday Console War Prediction thread
BydoEmpire replied to Atari5200's topic in Modern Console Discussion
Well I dunno that number sounds low... Lets see Sept NPD figures and focus on the Wii games.... Wii Play with Remote 282,000 <------------------------------------- Metroid Prime 3: Corruption 167,000 <-------------------------------- Hmmmmmmm 74.9% maybe? That said. I'm sure the Wii console will continue to sell well and will be impossible to find at Xmas. Its a good cheap gift to get the family. I don't think that's a valid analysis of the Wii's demographics. Netiher of the Wii titles on the list are new. MP3 has sold pretty close to Bioshock, and they came out around the same time. And the Wii's US userbase is smaller than the 360's. The biggest 3rd party Wii sales have been RE4 (blood & guts), Rayman (all ages, but adults can definitely appreciate the humor), and Red Steel (bloody & shooting). Of course, 3rd parties aren't the majority of Wii game sales. It'll be interesting to see how Carnival Games and other similar titles fare. For Nintendo's own stuff, we should look at how well Brain Age and Wii Fit sell compared to Mario, Zelda and Metroid. [edit] As for other predictions, the 360 will do really well. The PS3 price drop will help, but not enough to compete against the 360's lineup and the Wii's unique appeal. -
why are GBA games so expensive?
BydoEmpire replied to Atari5200's topic in Modern Console Discussion
I've always seen pretty good GBA game prices at my local Gamestop. Tons of games in the $5-$10 range that were worth buying (Tron 2.0, Activision Anthologies, Eye of the Beholder, etc). The most expensive used GBA game I ever bought was Drill Dozer for $20, but that wasn't too long after it came out. Fire Emblem, FF Tactics Advance and other popular RPGs tend to be around $25. -
2007 Vintage Character Shodown - The Semi-Finals
BydoEmpire replied to Rhindle The Red's topic in Poll Forum
Otto and Pitfall Harry. I was prepared to sit on this poll for a couple days to think about it, since it's the semi-finals. High stakes, you know? But the choices were clear. -
I loved 2600 Berzerk - one of my favorite games on the system. I always liked Frenzy much better in the arcade, though. I almost picked up a boxed copy of 5200 Berzek a couple months ago but passed. Silly me, I should have KNOWN it was coming up in the HSC!!! 2900 in an emulator after a couple games. Pretty solid port - the voice is cool.

I finally got around to trying out Mercury on the PSP, and I thought it was pretty fun. For $20 I'm definitley interested.

Atari founder says the games of today are "trash"
BydoEmpire replied to kevin242's topic in Modern Console Discussion
I don't totally disagree. I think a big issue is that most modern games aren't really "games" anymore. They're trying to be interactive fiction... except it's only fiction written STRICLY at a 5th grade level. Games stopped trying to be a fun way to pass time with and have fun, and tried to be these big, deep experiences, but there nowhere even CLOSE to books and film. There's no depth. Where are the well-explored characters? Where is the social commentary? Where is the intelligent parallels of current issues? Games with those are few and far between. If games really want to be taken seriously as interactive entertainment on par with movies, we need to equivalent of a film like Ghandi, or heck, even Blade Runner. We've been stuck making the equivalent of SW: Episode I for the last 20 years. Okay, sometimes we add blood and guts and consider that "mature." Gaming content is simply not relevant to society at large. That said, I love a good sci-fi popcorn flick, and there's nothing wrong with that. But if all you get is an endless stream of sci-fi popcorn flicks, you'd probably get sick of the movies. So far, and with few exceptions, modern games haven't even come close to expressing ideas, emotions and people as well as books and film. Good for you, that's not a popular thing to say on gaming boards. It's not about separating fantasy from reality (although that is a valid concern for young children), it's about empathy. Some people can empathise with characters (or people) more than others, and that's not a bad thing. If the game doesn't pull you in and make you feel for the characters, it's a pretty crappy piece of fiction, imho, interactive or otherwise. If you don't care what you're doing or you're doing it to, then why bother? That to me is what separates a good modern game from a bad one. I have to care about what I'm doing and why, or I get bored since I don't play modern games for the game itself. -
Dammit, I actually thought I might have had a chance this week. [Edit] 67,180 - that's my best tonight, and I'm done. Didn't bother taking a pic. The wave of ships just before the final stage on the second run got me again. I used to LOVE Vanguard on the 2600. It was done of the first games I had for it, and I remember playing the heck out of it on the tiny black and white TV I had in my bedroom.
-
I had an SDTV when I first got my 360, and played it on that for a couple weeks. Honestly, it was fine. It didn't look hugely noticeable than last-gen (although some games like Gears still looked great), but for me the big draw of the 360 is XBLA titles, friend list connectivity, etc. I think getting a surround system made a bigger difference than my HDTV.

Holiday Console War Prediction thread
BydoEmpire replied to Atari5200's topic in Modern Console Discussion
The real question is what percentage of Wii owners fall into that category? 10%? 25%? 50%? I think every publisher wants to know that. Personally, I'd guess it's around 25%, but of course I could be way off. -
Ha ha! Screw you junta, my wii is fixed!

Holiday Console War Prediction thread
BydoEmpire replied to Atari5200's topic in Modern Console Discussion
You said it! Though personally, I'm still looking at picking up 7800 stuff. I would agree with the majority - Wii first, 360 second, ps3 distant third. DS about 2:1 over the PSP, although I wouldn't be shocked if the PSP did better w/ the new Slim bundles out. -
There are no games out for WiiWare yet. I don't know if Nintendo has ever given a specific date for the first titles.

Huh, that's kind of interesting. Thanks for posting!

How many consoles do you own?
BydoEmpire replied to FibroFreak78's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Atari 2600, 2600jr, 5200, 7800, XE Intellivision (w/ Voice module), Odyssey 2, Bally Astrocade Sega SMS, Genny Model 2 (x2), Sega CD Model 2, Dreamcast (x2 - white & black) Nintendo NES, SNES, GameCube, Wii Playstation 1, Playstation 2 Xbox, Xbox 360 Nintendo DS, Game Gear, Game.com Classic computers: c64, Apple 2c, Amiga 500, Amiga 1000 Used to own, but sold: Colecovision, TG-16, n64, Saturn, GameBoy, GBA, GBA SP, Atari 520ST. I would like to get a Vectrex at some point, but that's about the only thing I don't have that I want. I don't even really regret selling what I did - I'd rather focus my attention on fewer consoles. [Edit]Wait, I'd like to get a Jag, too... -
A dual-joystick version would be pretty cool.

I mix it up. Most often, my 80s hard rock playlist (Van Halen, Maiden, Ozzy, Tesla, Joan Jett, etc), because it reminds me of being in an arcade. For a while I was listening to old RetroGaming Radio episodes. Lately I've been on a Hendrix kick. I do need to turn the TV up enough to hear the sfx, though, it's really tough to play without that. And this is purely for classic gaming - for modern games I listen to whatever the game has.

Not to derail the thread too much, but I couldn't stand the "plot" of Mario Sunshine. Magical Paintings in a castle sort of makes sense. It's believable in the fantasy Mario universe. But in Sunshine, these blob creatures were all upset that their Shines were missing. Then you jump into some graffiti (what?), finish a level, and a blob give you a shine! Just didn't make any sense. Hehe, I know, it's kind of odd to complain about a plot in a platformer, but it still sort of bugged me. I found the controls overall to be pretty sloppy, and in general it lacked the polish of every other Mario game.
-
62,4100 - almost made it through two whole runs. The level right before the boss the second time through kills me every time - those ships are fast and when they shoot sideways I haven't figured out how to get past them.
-
Sunshine wasn't "just another Mario game." It was by far the worst (and only non-stellar) Mario game I'd ever played. It wasn't terrible, but certainly not up to the high standards of the franchise. Anyways, the more I hear and see of Mario Galaxy the more excited I get. Definitely picking this up on day 1.

2007 Vintage Character Shodown - Round 15
BydoEmpire replied to Rhindle The Red's topic in Poll Forum
Pac Man, Otto, Q*Bert and Harry. I had a hard time voting against Mario, but Evil Otto is too cool. And Evil. -
I'm in the camp of "there were way too many games to buy this fall anyways" so while it's disappointing to not be able to play it sooner, my wallet suer appreciates it.

Ok i got a Dreamcast so now what?
BydoEmpire replied to jboypacman's topic in Modern Console Discussion
Hahaha... Zombie Revenge is so awesome. When I am at band practice sometimes I lean into the microphone and slowly say "Pipe!" I then laugh my ass off while everyone stares at me strangely. Not long after that... "Dual Handgun!" Of course you have to imitate the game announcer's voice for it to be awesome... and a microphone with a loud PA to say it into. Every Halloween for the last 3-4 years I fire up Zombie Revenge and play it while waiting for Trick Or Treaters. Good times (and a fun game).
