My new 72-pin started giving me trouble, but I found it works perfectly if I don't press the cart down after it's inserted. Just put the cart in and leave the tray up. No idea why, but it works for me.

I don't mind repeats, but there are a LOT of games left to choose from. I don't think we have to cycle through every single release, but it would be nice to go through at least most of them before repeating. Just my 2c, no big deal either way.

What games would really benefit from the Wii controls?
BydoEmpire replied to RickHarrisMaine's topic in Nintendo Wii / Wii U
Can't argue with that! -
I hear ya. For a guy who's been playing video games for most of my life...I'm not all that good either. I have a select few that I'm really good at, but most I'm quite average. Yeah, I feel that if I win even one round, it will be great. You can't be good at every game (especially if you didn't have a 5200 when you grew up, like me, it was all Inty & 2600). What's so fun is that it gives me a reason to pull out games I never put much time into, and give them a real shot. I would definitely prefer to play any game on the real hardware, but my 5200 collection is pretty small so I have to resort to emu for a bunch of games. Still, HSC is a good excuse to beef up my collection (and try before I buy).

I got totally stuck there, too. I completely missed the little rock you need to blow up to get into the morph ball track.

10,840 - finally started getting in the groove a little bit.

I wouldn't, either. I picked up my XE last year on ebay and absolutely love it. I was a c64 guy back in the day. Nothing against the A8's, I just didn't have one. But it sure is nice to be able to play Star Raiders properly! I had many other consoles (2600, 7800, etc) before the internet, but I probably wouldn't have as many.

Like was said elsewhere, it depends on what kinds of games you like. But personally, I've played my Wii much more than my 360, and I would recommend the system. I have more games for it than I've had time to finish. I'm four hours into Corruption, and I love it - definitely an A title. I'm a huge fan of the PM series, but Super Paper Mario left me a little... flat (pun intended), though others seemed to really like it. I do mean to pick the game up again and finish it, but it definitely didn't grab me the way the prior ones did. Finally, the Wii's fall lineup looks great: Mairo Galaxy and SSB: Brawl in particular. If you can find a Wii, and enjoy something a little bit different, the system is a lot of fun. I think Corruption really starts to show itself off on Bryyo - that world is simply gorgeous. And it's a bit more Metroid-y than the intro sequence. Great puzzles.

What games would really benefit from the Wii controls?

I think strategy & rpg games could benefit from having pointer-based controls - drag and drop units, circle groups of units, draw paths to walk, etc. -
Another vote for KEYSTONE KAPERS! I love the 5200 verison. Been playing it quite a bit lately, too so I should be moderately competetive for a change.

Played a couple games this morning - 5030 is my best so far. [Edit] - if you happen to be holding left or right on the keyboard during the "Player One" intro to each life, the controls get all screwed up. Weird.

Just got a Gamecube.. Any good game recommendations?
BydoEmpire replied to birdie3's topic in Modern Console Discussion
The two Star Wars games - Rogue Leader and Rebel Strike - are both excellent arcadey space shooters. For arcade action games, another vote for Ikaruga. Both Monkey Ball games are a blast as well. RE4 is one of the best games of the generation. If you like action/adventures at all, you need to get it. -
Lol, nicely done! Although sometimes talking about classic gaming is as fun as playing the games.

Now unless you're talking about a game besides Red Steel, I feel the need to ask what is wrong with that particular mechanic. In Red Steel it's push forward to zoom and thrust (i.e. push forward much more quickly) to enter the slow time mode. Despite these two controls being identcal except for the speed at which you push forward, I have had not one problem and find it very intuitive. As well, when zoomed in with the sniper rifel I find the pushing forward and pulling back motion to be much more automatic and natural for lining up one shot after another than is the moving of multiple analog sticks. It took some getting used to, but once you are used to it, it is far from garbage. Just my opinion, but for what it's worth:1. Most importantly, pushing the wiimote forward in Red Steel inherently screws up your aim. 2. It felt awkward on my wrists 3. It's not intuitive and doesn't make "sense." Don't get me wrong, I actually liked Red Steel and didn't have a problem with the controls - except for the zooming mechanic. Even that didn't really hurt the game all that much overall, I just didn't care for it.

I totally agree - it was unexpected and awesome.

What the Hell is wrong with Red Steel's Graphics?
BydoEmpire replied to ManShowBoy's topic in Nintendo Wii / Wii U
Hehe, it is memorable - I'll give you that! It reminded me of the "kidnapped the president" intro from Bad Dudes or something. I just thought it was kind of funny in a ridiculous way. Oddly, I didn't feel that way about the stage with guys dressed up in dinosaur suits. -
Played for an hour and a half - I'm partway through the first planet (just activated the first generator). 1. The controls are absolutely perfect - exactly what I expect a first person game to be on the Wii. None of this "shake the nunchuck down to duck" or "shove the wiimote forward to zoom" garbage. Not 'over designed' at all. The few motion controls they do have ('throwing' the nunchuck for the grapple beam, etc) work very well. Perfectly intuitive, immersive and tight. 2. The game looks absolutely gorgeous. Retro has a great sense of style, and the engine runs absolutely silky smooth. 3. There's a crapload of scanning. Every little terminal in every area can be scanned. I don't want to miss things because despite what I *thought* was a lot of diligence and patience, I finished Prime with a 71% rating and got an utterly craptastic ending for my effort. On the other hand, it totally breaks up the game to have to scan every teenie little doodad every two seconds. I do like the ambiance created by scanning dead bodies "high levels of phazon detected" etc, but so far it seems like way too much. Is it just me? It's totally fun to play, and I can't wait to get deeper into it. So far I would say it lives up to the hype - action/adventure-loving Wii owners won't be disappointed.

I brought just the 'coupon' portion to my GS, and they said it was only good for used games. I figured they were giving me the runaround, but I didn't want to bother arguing (not that I had any legs to stand on, I had no proof).

I'll probably pick up Mercury Meltdown for $20 - that sounds pretty good. I hope they reconsider the GWG price, though, because the game does sound like a lot of fun.

I'm thinking about doing an original game for the 5200 - I've got the concept and design fleshed out pretty well. I just need to make the time, and it's been 20 years since I've done any 6502 assembler. =) But I think it'd be a great platform for doing a homebrew - small enough for a 1 person team, but poweful enough for a lot of creative flexibility. Anyways, I picked up a couple of A8 programming books to nudge myself into action. Who knows, maybe by next year's CGE I'll have... er... at least started...

What the Hell is wrong with Red Steel's Graphics?
BydoEmpire replied to ManShowBoy's topic in Nintendo Wii / Wii U
Red Steel definitely does get better as it goes along. Even graphically (the burning dojo and bamboo forest are really nice looking levels). But man, the car wash stage? That was one of the cheesiest stages in video game history. Really the low part of the entire game, imho. -
Actually, EA has made some really decent stuff for the Wii. Godfather is one of, if not the best 3rd party game out there. SSX Blur is solid. Even the Wii Madden's have gotten good reviews. That said, Boogie (unsurprisingly, imho) didn't turn out well, and their upcoming "Playground" looks like complete garbage.

I was just playing the A8 version of this yesterday. Don't have the cart for the 5200, so it's emu time.
