  1. So far I've downloaded: Bonk's Adventure: Definitely worth $6 Alien Crush: Definitely worth $6 Victory Run: Mmmm, it's okay. I always wanted to try that game, so for me it was worth it. It's not a particularly great game, though. Hard to say for anyone else since you can pick up something like GT3 for $5, or PGR2 for $10. Dr. Robotnik: There are better puzzlers (like Puyu Pop Fever for the cube). I probably wouldn't download again for $8. The game ramps up from super easy to super hard too quickly for my tastes, although I like the art style.
  2. I would change the fact that the list exists in the first place. Must we focus on dissapointments? In year where 2 new systems came to market and hundreds of games were released, some of which would have decent arguments for being some of the best yet made, let's talk about what sucked instead. Why? Amen. 2006 had to be one of the best years in gaming. To be fair to them, though, they also have a "50 greatest games of 2006" as their cover story. Equally as pointless, but at least it's positive. If "gaming journalism" ever wants to be taken more seriously, they need to stop (or at least limit) this kind of fluff. Game Informer reviews also really bug me. Sometimes they're dead on. Sometimes I just absolutely, vehemently disagree. It's hard for me to gauge. Other mags and sites I kind of either generally agree or disagree. I know how to interpret them. But GI is all over the map. The mag has an OXM-like feel to their writing that I can't stand. It's like they target 13 year old fanboys with every article (This game is AMAZING!!! YOU MUST BUY!!! This game SUCKS!!! INSERT BAD JOKE HERE!!!). Somewhat related, I'm sick of everyone complaining about everything. Nintendo sucks. Microsoft sucks. Sony sucks. EA sucks. Sega sucks. Ubi Soft sucks. I love talking about games. It's nice to get a warning before dropping money on a lousy game. But come on, people, have some fun. Just because a game has a few quirks or bugs doesn't mean it sucks. If we only bought 10/10 games, we'd all have very, very small libraries.
  3. They release new games every Monday. Sega.com has their upcoming games (through Xmas) dated. Space Harrier II on the 18th and Toe Jam & Earl on the 25th. I'm not aware of any other VC games specifically dated, though there are a bunch that should be coming based on previous info (i.e. ESRB ratings submissions for SNES games, etc).
  4. That's very true. One of the Gamestop's near me had some really good clerks & managers. No BS. Very helpful and friendly. But the EB right down the street has terrible and rude employees. It could be a difference in management, or it could just be the particular employees. I'd prefer to buy from Gamestop/EB over BB/Target/Walmart if the employees are cool. No reason to shop anywhere - EB, Best Buy, Target, wherever - if the employees are jerks. I do, however, keep meaning to check out Rhino (I'm in N. Orlando), but last time I checked there wasn't one convenient for me. [Edit] I just checked their site, and the one on Colonial isn't too far. I'll have to check it out some time. I kind of forgot about Rhino, it's been a while since I looked. Thanks for reminding me. =)
  5. I really enjoyed Red Steel (finished it yesterday), and I didn't think the controls were *that* bad. There were a couple of things they definitley need to fix in the sequel: 1) The game occasionally seemed to lose track of where you were aiming, especially if you made fast motions. This caused you to spin out of control for a few seconds. It wasn't frequent enough to really kill the game, but it was frequent enough to be annoying. These random spin outs sucked, especially if you were trying to disarm an enemy, and he started shooting you while you were spinning around in circles trying to regain control. 2) There is no Y-centering. Because I sit lower than the wii sensor bar, gravity naturally pulls my hand down as I play. So I found myself looking at the floor a lot as I walked down cooridors. This forced me to manually recenter my view in Y a lot, which doesn't happen on PC or Dual Analog FPS's. 3) The zoom sucks. The forward movement is awkward to execute. Additionally, when you zoom no an enemy, the "auto target" always seems to fight with the auto aim. So you try and zoom on someone, and the auto aim pulls your aim one way, while you're trying to manually aim for the guy's head or something, and it's tricky. Also, the sheer act of pushing the remote forward towards the screen screws up where you're trying to aim at in X/Y. So when you try to zoom into someone, you're almost guaranteed to zoom to somewhere other than where you're aming. 4) Additionally, the zoom is super sensitive. I often found myself inadvertantly zooming in way to far. This shouldn't have been a problem with the analogness of the wiimote. 5) I enjoyed the swordfighting, but it did occasionally miss input movements. I never really died because of it, but some fights took longer than they should have because it just missed my swipes. I hear you can adjust the sensitivity for this, so it may not be an issue, but I've never tried it. You had to sort of adjust to the timing the game was expecting. I also smacked myself in the face a few times with the nunchuck cable when doing the dual-downward-thrust "scorpion" move. :/ None of these were enough to ruin the game, for me, though. The design is extremely forgiving, so even though zooming is awkward and you occasionally spin out (happened maybe five times in my entire run through the game - 12 hours or so), you won't really die because of it. Red Steel definitely gets better later on, though. The first few levels are pretty ugly. But later on, the burning dojo, bamboo forrest, etc look really nice. I agree, it's not an A title, but I don't think it's that bad.
  6. I'd like to see online regional, national and worldwide leaderboards. I'd also like to see online co-op at some point. I'd also like to see the wii channel menu navigatable by a cube controller so I don't have to grab the wiimote just to select the game. As for games, I mostly want the entire TG16 catalog available since I don't have one ATM. A few SNES games I've never played like Mario RPG (which is coming). Lots of light gun games (Gumshoe, Wild Gunman, Hogan's Alley, Terminator, etc). I always loved the Thunderforce shooters, so I'd like to see them. I'd also like to see some key GBC and GBA games available for play on the Wii or downloadable to the DS.
  7. Very cool, thanks for sharing. My brother, sister and I used to tear the house apart looking for the catalog (my mom wouldn't let us look at it until after Halloween). I really remember the smell from a fresh Sears/JC Penny catalog. Good times. Heh, good point.
  8. I actually like the NES Donkey Kong - it's one of the better ports out there. Sure, I'd rather have the real arcade game, but Nintendo never, ever suggested, hinted at, or mentioned ANYTHING for the VC other than console games. So I can't say I'm shocked the NES version is there. In fact, I'd be shocked (pleasantly) if it wasn't. But the NES DK is still pretty solid. They're doing this because they've already had NES/SNES/N64 emulators ready to go for years, so it was almost no work or cost (other than setting up the Wii Shop and interface, obviously).
  9. Congrats, enjoy your new system! I love my Wii. It certainly does seem like it's been a lot longer than two weeks since it launched.
  10. I've never had good luck preordering games at brick and mortar stores. Always preorder games online, you're much better off. Plus, you'll actually GET your preorder bonus, unlike at a store where they seem to be often given to the workers' friends, etc. Not that I'm bitter...
  11. I just bought some Wii points online via the wii shop channel, and before confirming the order there was a message that wii points are not transferrable to cash, blah, blah, and that games purchased for download are only playable on the system they're downloaded to. I never noticed such a message on the wii points card, but I'm sure it's there in fine print. Not a great policy. I can understand why they do it, and it's not stopping me from buying VC games. But I do think it kind of sucks. It might make me think twice about buying too many VC games (though having save points is really nice). At least it's Nintendo hardware - I've never had a Nintendo system fail (other than replacing a NES 72-pin). *crosses fingers*
  12. I enjoyed it in the arcade, though I haven't played it in a LONG time. People will say anything "sucks," especially if they've never tried it, or only played it for 30 seconds.
  13. I believe it uses the X/Y buttons for turbo, A/B for regular. On the Wiimote, the B button (trigger) is a turbo version of the 1 button. Which kind of screwed me up for a while, as my trigger finger kept hitting it accidentally and I couldn't figure out why Bonk kept bonking as I moved to the right. ^_^
  14. My Wavebird and wired GC controllers have worked fine with both Cube games and VC games. I haven't really heard any complaints about that. I highly doubt you'd have any problems running GC Zelda on the Wii.
  15. I thought I read somewhere that you could NOT play games directly off the SD card. But I'm not 100%.
  16. Yeah, I'd definitely love to see DS download stations available via the Wii. Makes perfect sense.
  17. I have DK Jr for the NES (DK Classics) and GBA (via the card reader), and I assume the VC NES version is identical. I haven't played the coin-op in a while, so I'm not sure what details are missing, but as far as I can tell it's an excellent port. I was hoping Nintendo would send out a free VC game for the holidays, like in Animal Crossing. That'd be pretty cool, though I'm not holding my breath. =)
  18. I'm all over Victory Run. I can see people wanting the "big guns" so to speak, but I do like having a few games each week, rather than having them all dumped at once. I don't have time to play that many at conce, anyways, and it's nice to have something to look forward to on Mondays.
  19. I thought this was cool, and I hadn't seen it before. Forgive me if it's old news. I did a forum search, but didn't find it posted already. http://www.fazed.net/video/?id=522 Game ads were so fun back in the day.
  20. I keep meaning to go back and try out the new areas, but I haven't touched PSU since the Wii came out. I'll probably give the new missions a run this weekend. I did one quick Moatoob mission the morning the update came out, and it was pretty cool.
  21. Yeah, he has a show on Comedy Central (I don't have cable, but I see a lot of clips of his show on the net). He's hilarious.

  23. Who knows. I can tell you that that both the graphics and the controls suck in Red Steel. As a concept it's interesting - as an engaging, fun FPS game it's mostly a failure. I'm actually enjoying Red Steel. Yes, it's a little clunky here and there. But I'm having more fun with it than any FPS in recent memory. The level design is excellent - everything feels big without being confusing. There is a nice variety of environments. The sword fighting sequences nicely break up the action. It's not an AAA game, but it's fun in the same way a B action movie is fun. I don't know that more time would have helped - it seems like the game was in development for a long time as-is. But it's hard to say without knowing their situation. As for release dates, I've seen a few Wii games dated such as Wario Ware coming out in mid-January. Release dates are ALWAYS subject to change, especially when it comes to Nintendo.
  24. Not specifically Black Friday, but I got DoA Ultimate for xbox, new for $2.90 at GoGamer.com. I'm not a big DoA fan, but I couldn't pass that up.
  25. I bought my n64, Cube and Wii on launch day. I picked up a DC within launch week. But usually I either wait a year (ps1/ps2/xbox/ds) or get it at the end of the system's life when games are cheap and plentiful (saturn/tg-16).
