You use a keyboard and mouse with it so you might as well just use a PC with DOSBOX (or in my case I use my real DOS system lol).
Yeah, that's my feeling as well. Of all the "mini" console/computer/game system releases, the PC makes the least sense because modern PCs can pretty much play all the same games with the same interface (mouse/kbd). The experience of a modern pc is pretty much exactly the same, unlike playing console games on an emulator.
GOG.com nicely handles this for me in a cheap and hassle-free way.

When my family got a c64 we had a 1541 with it, so I'm thinking the first peripheral we bought separately was a Commodore printer. We might have gotten that at the same time, I don't recall. We did end up getting an Okimate 10 a couple years later as well - COLOR PRINTING!!!!!!
The first real "upgrade" was probably a 512k ram card for my Amiga 500.

For whatever reason, this is a game I never saw back in the 80s. I got a chance to play it this weekend (SD2IEC) and really enjoyed it. I'll definitely be coming back for more.
I don't see how Wizard could have been created without seeing Jumpman first; there are far too many similarities between the games.
Totally agree, I don't know the history but they're really, really similar. It would be very ... strange... if they were truly independently developed.

I've been looking for a good, game-focused Amiga podcast. I'll check it out!

The box art is the best part of Dark Chambers. Deeply disappointing game for me. It's not unplayable, it's just totally lacking any kind of fun factor. Different strokes and all that...

I always liked Vanguard as well. I got a 2600 used from a friend back in the early-mid 80s - I traded him a box of pirated Apple 2 floppies for his 2600 setup - and Vanguard was one of the handful of games I got with it. I played it so much on my little black and white TV. I dig the 5200 version as well.
Porting games from one console to another is not insignificant. I'm sure you could take *some* of the code over, but there would be a lot of rewriting from scratch. Add it to the big pile of "games we'd love to see."

I'll keep an eye out - my wife and I *just* watched the first Johnny English a couple weeks ago and thought it was pretty funny.

Panzer Dragoon Saga for Saturn cost me around $120, but I sold it for the same or just a little more a few years later after I'd played it and was unloading part of my collection.

IMHO Galaga is underrated. It get slagged for the graphics not being arcade-perfect, but they're still pretty good and imho the gameplay is better than the arcade. Smoother difficulty ramp and it doesn't feel quite so "stiff," although all the key elements are there.
As everyone else said, there isn't much in the way of "hidden gems" on the 7800. Maybe some of the homebrews...

That was really good, thanks for sharing.

The family got an Intellivision around '81, I remember playing Horse Racing, Basketball, and Poker & Blackjack with my dad.

I always liked the circular dissolve at the start/end of levels in Load Runner, that was cool.

I'm not really a hockey fan, but everything I know about hockey I learned from NHL '94 on the Genesis.
I definitely enjoyed Ice Hockey and Blades of Steel on the NES.
I went through a brief phase of paying attention to hockey in the early 00s due to a friend, so I played a bit of one of the NHL games on the Dreamcast an it was fun, but I wasn't a big enough fan to play much. I like one of the NHL Hitz games on the Gamecube as well.

Another big thank you! I only typed in a handful of games from Compute, so while a lot of the names ring a bell i haven't actually played most of these.

It was a quarterly specific for the Apple II (like Compute's Gazette was for the C64).FWIW, the one I have are Compute's Apple Applications. As noted, two of them have the month/year on the cover and one is just "Spring/Summer." Not sure if they actually changed to monthly at some point or if they just changed how they're labelled. I subscribed to Compute! but bought Apple Applications at the newsstand a few times when I got my //c.
Good luck, CaptainBreakout, I hope you find the game!

Sorry, nope, no Mosquito Madness. I have:
Spring/Summer '87 (Biker Dave, Picture Maker)
Dec '87 (Vulcan Mines, ProDesk, The Clipper, Numbers Construction Set)Feb '88 (Laser Chess, Disk Alarm)
I always enjoy reading through computer magazines from the 80s. I don't know how I was able to keep them all these years but I'm glad I did.

I think I have one or two issues, probably from around '88 but I don't know exactly. I don't recall seeing Mosquito Madness but I'll double check.

Check out the Eaten By A Grue podcast, it's great.
I never made it more than 10 minutes into a text adventure, but a few months ago i got a ways into Enchanter. I definitely want to get back to it and finish it, i'm really enjoying that one and so far the puzzles haven't been too bad... other than I'm currently stuck. Might have to use a hint to get back on track.

Thanks for sharing, I'd love to attend some day. In the mean time I'll attend vicariously through your pics & videos. That ALICE laptop looks great!

Yea Micro Center is about the only brick and mortar computer retailer still in business. I still go to one near me usually to physical handle what I'm looking to buy. More often than not I just buy there instead of order online as I would like to support keeping them in business.
When I lived in Chicago my team and I would sometimes use our lunch break to go to MicroCenter and check out the games and other stuff. At that time (late 90s, early 00s) they started to stock discount "older" software - I picked up a lot of games like Perfect General, Fallout, etc for only a few bucks new. I bought a lot of stuff at MicroCenter around that time.

I really liked the first two Shenmue games on DC. I don't really need to play through them again but I'd definitely like to complete the trilogy. Pretty excited, it's been a long time coming! I had no idea 3 was coming out until just recently. Somehow I missed the trailer.

If I got to pick the native libraries of 5 and only 5 systems (desert island type of scenario) forever more, I'd go with:
1) Atari 2600
2) NES
3) Sega Genesis
4) PS1
5) Xbox

That pretty much sums up my opinions as well.
