  1. Watching a B sci-fi movie (Creature) on over-the-air TV via Comet network, drinking some rum. This is the break I've been waiting for all week.  Good stuff.  Add a dash of Atari or Sega and it's be a perfect 10.

Did they cut out the nudity?  I can't remember how COMET operates.   Anyway, if a (formerly dead) naked chick is standing outside yer cave when it's -12 degrees out,  and she suddenly acts interested in you after an alien contact...Well,  Think Twice!   That's my only advice to would be space travelers...Well, that and chest-bursters will ruin a good meal...

I did not see any nudity, but I ended up watching in and out, not straight through... may have missed that. I doubt there was nudity over the air.

      save2600

Oh, they play old movies with mild nudity... just that the "offending" areas are blurred out. Forget who it was that said it here, but they (or their kid) call the Comet and THIS stations the Vaseline channels. So true! 😀

  2. I made it 5 episodes into Rings of Power and gave up. There are parts I do like, but it feels like nothing is happening, and other than the Harfoots I don't really care about any of the characters. I really want to like it, so if it gets better later on do let me know, maybe I'll pick it back up.

  3. Stay safe central Florida, Tom Terry is always there for you!

  4. In the last two days my printer (6 months old), my UPS (2 years old), my refrigerator door (3-4 years old) and one of my work monitor cables (?) all died. I can't say I'm a fan of this era of planned obsolescence and "just buy another one."  Thankfully my Ataris still work great after 30-40 years.

At least your Atari consoles are going strong.

  5. I beat Rescue Mission on the Master System tonight. I've always loved the game, but I don't recall beating it before. It wasn't really that hard, but it's a super fun game. Come play a few rounds in the SMS high score club. https://forums.atariage.com/forum/93-sms-high-score-club/

  6. Three episodes in, I'm not sure how much longer I'm willing to wait until Rings of Power gets interesting. It's very slow. I like the hobbit-like creatures and their plot line, and Galadriel is pretty good... but as a show it's kind of plodding.

It is a lot easier to just listen to the Audible book (or whatever source-Apple Play, etc.) than reading the book. I have always preferred to read the written word rather than to listen to an audio book recording, until the last couple of years, since I realized that if I listen, like with music or radio, I can do other things like work on my electronics, art or programming at the same time, basically multitasking since I never seem to have enough time for hobbies anymore and I have too many of them.

I've read pretty much every book Isaac Asimov ever wrote, a part of a bucket list of reading I started about 15 years ago, but with the advent of the new Foundation series I decided to "re-read" all the Foundation books this year, only I was able to listen to them all on Audible while working on my backlog of electronic repairs and upgrades.

Interesting. I tried listening to the audiobook version of the Iliad a month ago, but I kept having to go relisten to sections because I was doing other things and getting distracted.  I'd realize I didn't catch the last 5 minutes and then have to rewind.  It's a lot easier for me to reread a sentence or paragraph than audiobook.  On a long trip or something, if I don't have things competing for my attention it's great.  My wife, son and I have listened to almost the entire Harry Potter series audiobooks driving back and forth to the beach over the years.

To me Silmarillion is like when you like a movie...But every time you watch it you fall asleep...It's the Cool World of books!

  7. Fathrom events is bringing Universal classics The Mummy and Bride of Frankenstein to theaters Oct 1 as double feature: https://www.fathomevents.com/events/The-Mummy-The-Bride-of-Frankenstein?date=2022-10-01&utm_campaign=Jeepers Creepers Reborn

Fun way to kick off October.  I know there are Svengoolie fans here that might be interested. Now we can see those movies he's shown in the theaters!

That would be cool, esp. to see The Mummy and Bride of Frankenstein,  because I haven't seen them...But it's 45 miles away,  and it shows at 1PM (Awfully early for me) and I've got too many obligations requiring days off already...More than likely I'll be working that day ...   Still...Neato!

  8. Friday night, browsing Zillow...

  9. I watched Red Sonja for the first time in 30+ years. It held up surprisingly well. It's not a great film by any stretch, but it does have its charms. Some of the sets are cool, Brigitte Nielson does a good job, and the comic relief is amusing without ruining the movie.

I aw that one in the theater...Lo those many years ago.

  10. After a few years' hiatus, the Sega Master System High Score Club is back on.  Come and play!

  11. Director's Cut of the original Star Trek: The Motion Picture is playing in theaters next week!  Definitely going, it's been ages since I've seen it. Lots of other Star Trek, but not the first movie.

      GoldLeader

I saw it in the theater though BITD (Not Director's Cut of course),...And ...Well...Yeah,  first time I ever took a nap in a theater at age 11  ?

New one has some lengthened scenes, tightened audio, new CGI (?)..HMMmmm...Better bring a pillow!

      Seriously though,  have fun!

  12. I saw The Northman last night. I definitely liked aspects of it but I think I was expecting less artsy more fartsy.  More of a Conan the Barbarian type of fantasy action film. It was more artsy and bizarre than I expected, and like many modern movies it tried to squeeze too much in. Still, I think I like it more after the fact than I did while watching.

    1. GoldLeader

      GoldLeader

I definitely need to see it sometime...

  13. Local library had their bi-annual book & DVD sale, and amongst tons of other stuff, I randomly picked up one disc of Hercules: The Legendary Adventure Season 4. I think I watched an episode or 2 of it back when it aired, but I must say, it's pretty good. The acting is about what I expected (e.g. bad), but the production values are much higher than I remember, and the storylines are decent.  All the new shows these days take themselves too seriously to be fun.

  14. Lord help me, I started playing Civ 3. There hasn't been a single game in my life that sucks away the hours more easily than the Civ series.

Feel free to count your hours and post in either of the two weekly trackers, depending on if it is a pre-Y2K or post-Y2K system.

  15. New Conan novel coming - Blood of the Serpent https://conan.com/conan-returns/

Apparently on the 90th anniversary of the Phoenix on the Sword (REH's first Conan story).

  17. These new Rush pinball games look amazing! https://sternpinball.com/game/rush/ $4600 so I'll never own one, but still cool. I hope I get to play one out on location at some point.

  18. I was doing some cleaning today and I noticed my wife has a (half empty) bottle of wine under her computer desk. Gotta stay sane somehow, more power to her. Incidentally, I have a (almost empty) bottle of rum in the cabinet I keep usb cables and other random computer gear.

I'm a bottle half full kind of guy.  Either way it still gets added to the shopping list!?

    4. BydoEmpire

      BydoEmpire

Apparently we do... to be honest, I keep my rum in there because I don't want to have it "out" anywhere my kid would find it. Seemed like a safe enough place.  It probably takes me 6 months to get through a bottle, I don't drink it that often. Every once in a while I do enjoy dark rum, though. Caribbean Reef is my current favorite.

  19. Finished Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition last night. Solid game, glad I played it, but some clunky parts. The ending was a bit underwhelming. Maybe time to take a break for D&D games for a bit.

I wish it had been GoG. Epic are pretty bad about DRM, no?

    2. BydoEmpire

      BydoEmpire

The DRM'd mp3 ship has long-since sailed in music business... I can't imagine bandcamp making that much money. They're very good and successful at what they do, but I'd have assume they pretty much a niche part of the music business. Interesting to see what they do with it. Would Epic use bandcamp for more than music? It's not like there aren't already a million other indie game sites out there...

  20. An hour of tough yoga this morning, and an hour of hiking through the woods this afternoon... time to sit with a beer and watch football.  Sadly, no time for Atari today (so far, but I can still correct that).

  21. After at least 15 years I had to retire my old reliable Brother MFC-4800 B&W laser printer. That thing was a tank. Longest-lasting, most reliable printer I've ever had by far.

I have a Brother MFC 7420 that I know I used for the retail store I had that opened in 2004 that is still going.  I have had to replace the laser toner cartridges maybe THRICE in its entire life, just absolutely incredible.  Brother / Laser all the way.  I remember in college having to shell out $35 or more (which is like $65 today) seemingly every 6 weeks for deskjet cartridges just to print off papers.  I think one week I nearly had to go without eating for a few days just to afford it (minimum wage was $3.35 / hour, ack!).  Screw you, HP.  :)

Brother represent.  Mine is a HL-3180.  I'll never use an inkjet again.

  22. New Steve Vai album "Inviolate" is pretty cool if you like his music. I particularly like Greenish Blues.

  23. Ignored users are still showing up in status updates. Is that a setting I missed, as designed, or a bug?

Not signatures and mentions, but I wouldn't expect those to update status posts... either way, checking those boxes doesn't seem to fix this.  Not a big deal, but worth reporting in case it is a bug. Maybe changes to ignore preference take time to populate, that might be it too.
