  1. Thanks for sharing, I'd love to attend some day. In the mean time I'll attend vicariously through your pics & videos. That ALICE laptop looks great!
  2. When I lived in Chicago my team and I would sometimes use our lunch break to go to MicroCenter and check out the games and other stuff. At that time (late 90s, early 00s) they started to stock discount "older" software - I picked up a lot of games like Perfect General, Fallout, etc for only a few bucks new. I bought a lot of stuff at MicroCenter around that time.
  3. Finally made it out of the elven tomb in Ravenloft: Strahd's Possession. Stupid switch puzzle... I'm okay with using the hint book on that one, NEVER would have solved it without the clues.

  4. I really liked the first two Shenmue games on DC. I don't really need to play through them again but I'd definitely like to complete the trilogy. Pretty excited, it's been a long time coming! I had no idea 3 was coming out until just recently. Somehow I missed the trailer.
  5. If I got to pick the native libraries of 5 and only 5 systems (desert island type of scenario) forever more, I'd go with: 1) Atari 2600 2) NES 3) Sega Genesis 4) PS1 5) Xbox
  6. I've already paired down significantly over the last 10 years. Kept* & working: 2600, 7800, Intellivision, SMS, PS1, Gamecube, Wii Have a spare console sitting around but no (or few) games: Genesis, Game Gear Kept the games, but have no working console: Xbox PS2 GBA Sold: Saturn, Dreamcast, Atari 5200, Odyssey 2, ColecoVision, Bally Astrocade, NES, SNES, Nintendo DS *I have sold some of the more rare/valuable games for these systems, but for the most part I have a decent number and will still buy/collect for.
  7. That was great, thanks for sharing. Pretty much the only (non-Atari) games I play are via GOG.com. Love it.
  8. Played Dragonfire on the CV flashback. Is the bridge sequence so utterly unplayable on a real cart? It's not one I ever owned. Such a great game on the 2600.

      That's a good idea, retrorussell.

GoldLeader: Really? I guess Pitfall was okaaay, but Pitfall 2 was lousy. It feels off, and the CV doesn't do the game's bright colors justice.

Got ya. I only had Pitfall on ColecoVision, not Pitfall 2, but yeah I played it a lot when I first got it and I loved it.

  9. Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicle is the best light gun (style) game ever. Dead Space: Extraction is a great gun game as well. Metroid Prime: Corruption was my favorite game of the generation, and by far my favorite 3d Metroid game. Order Up was surprisingly fun.

Space Hulk is still an awesome game. Thanks for that. :)

That VGA/SoundBlaster era of PC games was the best, particularly for RPGs and adventure games.

  11. I love seeing old computer ads, it's fun to revisit what was available at what time. Thanks for sharing! I graduated college in 1995 and bought a Pentium 1, it was great. I want to say it was around $1200 but I could be mis-remembering. I totally splurged on a 17" monitor as well, I used that for 10+ years. Since I was doing some 68000 programming at the time I considered buying a low-end 68k-based Mac but IIRC they had just transitioned to PowerPC machines so it didn't seem like it'd be worth it long-term. Games were a big factor, of course. Good times.
  12. One of those games I knew *of*, but never actually played.
  13. One of the few things I like about modern computer: fast, compatible and great-looking printers. So nice to not have to deal with drivers and which software supports which model of printer.

I thank God every time I plug in a printer and remember that I no longer have to use the parallel port. USB is the greatest and least appreciated innovation of modern times.

I'm totally with you on USB, is was a huge improvement.

Wireless network and cloud printing is even better than USB.

I'm happy modern laser printers are cheap and good.

  14. I love the two Shenmue games on the Dreamcast, but imho they're not the running for best games of all times. I'd put Shenmue 2 in my top 50, maybe, but not top 10 or 20. I don't know that I'd enjoy as much if I was playing it for the first time now. Yes, there were tedious elements. Yes, there was some annoying waiting. Yes, the dialog was ... stiff. Yes, the actual could have been better. It was still a ton of fun. The atmosphere was great. I remember running around the shipyard through a flock of pigeons, watching them react and fly out of my way. It was a beautiful little thing that most people probably never did or noticed, but I was enthralled by the attention to detail. Great graphics throughout. I enjoyed the story as well. Cheesy, sure, but I totally got into it. I liked the characters, for the most part. I wanted to get Lan Di and I wanted to save the girl. As much as you can in a video game game, I cared about them. I liked the idea of a fighter/adventure game combination. It was something different. I enjoy adventures and I enjoy(ed) fighters, so this was a cool way to bring them together. The difficulty was just right - there were some challenging bits, but I usually knew what to do next and got through it without being frustrated. It was also meaty enough to feel like good value for the money. There was lots of side stuff (the arcade games, collecting the capsules, etc). Shenmue 2 fixed all the annoying bits of Shenmue 1 and made it bigger and better in every way.
  15. 7800 & SMS - pause button on the console. Nice to have a pause button, but with my current setup it's inconvenient to have it on the console instead of the controller. 7800 - love the console, but hate the PainLines and the Euro pads aren't any better. Fortunately most games work with 2600 sticks. Intellivision - love the library, but so many have to be played on level 4 because the other difficulties are sooooo slooooow. Dreamcast - floaty Dpad. It's awful, although I like the DC controller in general.

  17. Mixing my album took three times longer than I hoped, but not longer than I expected. Done today! Just reviewing masters and hopefully it'll be out for the world to stream or download by evening.

"Atlantis" - nothing to do with Wayne Shorter album of the same name. It's instrumental rock, bits of prog.

  18. Finally got to see Solo last night. I had really low expectations, but I really liked it (for what it was). Good Star Wars-themed action movie.

I'm sure it's a good movie, but TBH it's the hardcore Star Wars fans that are ruining things for everyone cause "it's not their childhood"...

After all the negative press and turmoil, I was also pleasantly surprised when I finally saw SOLO. I thought it was actually quite enjoyable and easily the best of the 4 post-Lucas movies.

I've not heard of anyone not liking it. Should I be listening to boneheads on the internet now? If anyone says Everyone loves it or Everyone hates it, about Anything; They are lying...Like the guy at the end of the bar mumbling "Lemme tell you something"...

  21. Trying to pick up my half-finished game of Ravenloft: Strahd's Possession after not having played it in months. The curse of the RPG for me.

Me too! Maybe today I'll finish Dragon Warrior haha! I've only got the final battle to go (Because for some reason I quit in 1990)...

That's what RPG games do to you. You get so invested in the game that you can't stop playing and don't realize how long you were playing until the morning sun rises and lets you know how much you messed up!
