  1. Hah, the Wii is my newest console as well, and it's still hooked up. I rarely play it, but it's there.
  2. Eye of the Beholder port to c64 looks incredible! http://www.indieretronews.com/2018/06/eye-of-beholder-work-in-progress.html

it really does. Always amazes me the graphics that can be pulled off on that computer with only 16 colors to draw from

It's very artistically impressive what they've done - the graphics are blocky and fuzzy, but in just the right way that your eyes fill in the details. Doesn't look like a limited C64 color palette at all.

  3. Which one has the best native library? I'd say PS1 by a hair over PS2.
  4. A few feet away. Not unreasonably close. I can "see" the whole screen, it's just hard to pay attention to a million moving objects if they're spread too far apart. My experience my not be your experience, and that's what I've found I liked. 6 feet is too far away for me, personally. If you can play 2600 games like that all the more power to you.
  5. Pick one off the curb of, if you can still find it, get one cheap from goodwill or a flea market. You should be able to get a fine CRT for almost or literally nothing. I wouldn't go bigger than 27", it makes it hard to keep the whole screen in your visual field if you're seating reasonably close. I like 24" myself.
  6. I always loved Space Cavern. I don't know exactly why, but it was a 2600 favorite. Sadly my cart got broken and I haven't been able to replace it.
  7. I was mowing the lawn today listening to Ozzy, Sabbath, Def Leppard, Metallica... nothing has changed in 30 years.

Really, nothing has changed? You were still using your cassette Walkman? lol

Of course it's a figure of speech, but for what it's worth I actually did use my cassette walkman about 8-10 years ago for a couple weeks when my ipod died. Worked fine.

Awesome! When I mow, I put in ear plugs, then headphones connected to one of many MP3 players (and a little power amp for loudness and volume control on the fly), with gobs of playlists on Micro SD cards and I hit (sometimes) every genre of music I think, but of course all the ol classics just like you mentioned...I guess the only thing that has changed is earplugs and I quit using the Walkman (maybe 5 - 7 years ago? haha)...

  8. I recently got a Seagull 78 and I'm really happy with it. Plug and play. The way I have my console set up, a little ways away from the TV, the '78 also functions as a convenient controller cord extension. I use an ASCIIWare Genny joystick, and for some games it's a real godsend. The Seagull 78 is totally worth the money. I don't use the Prolines at all anymore. I would like to find a Genny arcade stick with the stick on the right. For some games I'd prefer right-handed control, but it's not a dealbreaker.
  9. Finally found a copy of Ghost House for the SMS at a price I'm willing to pay. I loved it growing up, but it's been a long, long time. Curious to see how it holds up.

Easily the best card game they released. I still find it charming, but boy, it's awful repetitive.

Best game on the Master System. My younger sibling would play Ghost House until his hands bled. LOL Sega’s 8-bit console is the greatest, most underrated console of its day. I’ve always preferred it over the NES.

  10. Yeah, but by then the servers will be shut down and you won't be able to buy or play any games for it.
  11. My consoles are hooked up to a 24" Sanyo CRT, which works fine, but I don't know if I have a good pic. It's the perfect size for 8-bit games imho and while the colors are a little dull the picture is pretty clear with a traditional RF connection. My XEGS and c64 use this 12" Toshiba, while the //c uses its classic green screen:

  14. My 9 year old autistic son got in trouble at therapy today for writing the F word on a whiteboard. It's not his fault, though, he has no idea what it is. He was literally just writing down names of Van Halen albums. My wife was no happy... but I think it's kind of funny. So innocent.

Why would the F word be a part of a Van Halen album title?

Yeah it's Van Halen's Album titled "For UnLawful Carnal Knowledge." Take the first four letters of each word and there you go.

  17. Making good progress on Enchanter... first Infocom game I've made it more than a few rooms into. I love that I got stuck on puzzle and thought about solutions for a couple days and figured it out away from the keyboard.

  18. The "final stage" will almost certainly last many more years, so this is pretty much non-news. I think we all knew a PS5 was coming at some point. Whether that's 2020 or 20201 or later depends on the market.
  19. Love seeing new, original software. Looks cool!
  20. I totally agree. My 80+ year old father-in-law wanted to check stocks online and it was really hard for him to navigate the mouse and yahoo website. If it were Compuserver or something I could have said "when this comes up, press '1' for stocks" then type the symbol and hit ENTER." In a lot of ways it was easier. I also find it amusing that these days on my PC I just go to the start menu and type the name of the program I want to run. I very rarely click icons, unless it's one of the handful of things pinned to the bar. It's kind of come full circle. As for the Amiga, I don't know, maybe they could have provide an Amiga sound/graphics board for the PC, ride the inevitable wave and take the market before Adlip/SoundBlaster/etc. Perhaps they could have supported cross-platform development and eventually migrate native 68k Amiga users over to the PC. Hard to see it being too successful, but who knows.
  21. Finally got an Edladdin Seagull 78. Looking forward to using my Genesis arcade stick!

Awesome! I got my custom Coleco Edladdin myself! :)

Edladdin Seagull sounds like some obscure 50's European roadster.

  22. That was a good one. I also liked "Crush, Crumble, Chomp" which was pretty similar.
  23. I'm with you. My original c64 (from 84-ish) has a "Made in the USA" sticker on the bottom, and outside of a missing 6 key and generally stiff keyboard it still works fine. The keyboard and slow loads are rough in 2018, though. I should look at just replacing the keyboard, I think it'd make a world of difference. My XEGS has a stiff keyboard as well, but works fine. I have a 2c that I use pretty often w/ a FloppyEmu, I think that's held up well. It works as good as new after all these years... actually, it works better with the FloppyEmu. I was just playing a game on it this weekend. Games look sharp on the tiny green screen. I think how well a computer holds up is a combination of software library, load times, and keyboard. Those three things will keep me from using a system as often as I might otherwise. They're not deal breakers (I still use and enjoy my XEGS & c64), but they are certainly friction points so to speak. Depends what I do on it, though. The keyboard isn't as big a deal on the c64 because I'm typically playing games that don't use it much. It's not a black and white line.
  24. I hear you. I kind of like the game, especially the SMS port which is amazing for an 8-bitter, but the gameplay is really dull. There's not much skill involved, and not much you can do to get better at the game. It's a war of attrition of quarters. I don't generally like that school of arcade game design. On the plus side, there are funny moments and it's satisfying to bring down buildings. It's not a terrible game, imho, but not in my top 20 arcade games... maybe not even top 50.
  25. Really enjoying the game, although I find it pretty hard to dodge the flying enemies and gauge collisions. Feels like more being new to the game than any inherent unfairness in the design. Love the hieroglyphics system, wish there was more horizontal room to move on screen... overall a good game based on first impressions. 20,148
