Arcade vs classic consoles/computers
BydoEmpire replied to Noah98's topic in Classic Console Discussion
IMHO The super action controller is worth it for every CV game... bordering on mandatory. Call it blasphemy if you will, but I like 7800 Galaga better than the arcade version. More gentle difficulty ramp up. -
I loved the SMS back in the day, and even though it doesn't get tons of playtime now it's still a great console. First, it has amazing arcade ports that still hold up (Shinobi, Afterburner, etc). Second, it has some really fun, quirky originals (Penguin Land, Alex Kidd, etc). Finally, it has the best light-gun lineup of any console ever (Rescue Mission, Wanted, etc).

The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD
BydoEmpire replied to Atariboy's topic in Modern Console Discussion
I really enjoyed it when it came out. The triforce search at the end was definitely tedious, but not so much so I quit playing. There were some really memorable moments in Wind Waker. That said, I have zero interest in replaying it no matter how much of a "remix" it is. The types of games just have zero replay value for me. -
We'll see what happens, but the video looked like generic 3D hack & slash w/ nostalgic license slapped on. But I guess, what are they going to do, a 2d side scroller? I don't know... curious to see more of the game. I liked the original (Amiga) version - not my favorite game of all time, but it looked and sounded unbelievable and I got into it. Psygnosis was gold. There was a 3D "space flight" sinistar for PC about 10-15 years ago.

Ugh... getting that itch again (not a good itch)...
BydoEmpire replied to 82-T/A's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I've sold big chunks of my collection a couple of times and never regretted it. Two reasons - first, I sold it specifically to use the money for something I really wanted. It wasn't just "to get rid of it" and the money got pissed way to who knows where. I know what I used the money for and I'm happy about that choice. Second, life just moves on. While I still enjoy playing classic games occasionally, I just didn't see myself firing up some of these systems ever again, so why wait for them to break? I might as well get some money for them, put it towards something I will enjoy and pair down. I would not sell unless you're really certain about it. When I've done it, I had no doubts and it was the right thing for me. I never sold anything "on a whim" and I kept the systems I actually use. -
EGM Top 20 Favorite Game Systems of All Time

A big reason I put the PS1 in my top 5 is the great set of compilations! -
More GameCube Hidden Gems (Part 3)
BydoEmpire replied to Metal Jesus's topic in Modern Console Discussion
The GameCube controller is the most comfortable controller ever. It melts into your hands like a warm stick of butter. Not perfect for every game, but super comfortable. -
Love or no Love for handheld systems.
BydoEmpire replied to Seob's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I've tried many times over the years, but the Nintendo DS is the only handheld system I ever really enjoyed, or spent much time with. I love the DS. Most handhelds' screens are too small for me to really enjoy, but the DS had enough else going for it I could deal. -
EGM Top 20 Favorite Game Systems of All Time
BydoEmpire replied to Illtiger1's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Count me as someone who liked the original Xbox better than the 360 (or any of this gen's consoles). My Top 5: 5. Intellivision - amazing and groundbreaking originals, still fun to play today. Also my first console, so high nostalgia factor. 4. PS1 - huge library, lots of variety and lots of high-quality titles in every genre. 3. Sega Genesis - I liked the SNES a little more back in the day, but the Genny has had more staying power over the years. 2. Dreamcast - so many amazing games, including PSO - my all-time favorite video game. It was magic. 1. Atari VCS - still gets more play time that any of my other consoles. Amazing. -
Hah, wow, what a response. Shame you're blocked, you could have won that amazing piece of gaming history!

GameCube Hidden Gems - Part 2
BydoEmpire replied to Metal Jesus's topic in Modern Console Discussion
BMX XXX was the same situation - uncensored on GC & Xbox, but PS2 covered up the boobies. I'd pick a cross-platform title that didn't get a lot of press, but it was on Gamecube and rocked: Gladius, a turn-based, fantasy-themed strategy game. -
Raiden or 1943 R-Type or Gradius Galaga or Galaxian Centipede or Millipede Pole Position or Out Run Gyruss or Tempest Zaxxon or Viewpoint F-Zero or Wipeout Mario Brothers or Popeye Defender or Choplifter Robotron 2084 or Smash TV Breakout or Arkanoid Ikari Warriors or Commando

Comedian pokes fun at the future of video games
BydoEmpire replied to Brian O's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I bought Shenmue 2 for the Dreamcast brand new from EB games for $59. Euro version, but it came with a free boot disc. I did end up getting it for Xbox also (IIRC I paid $10 as well, can't remember where I got it). I loved the first Shenmue, bit it was pretty hard to watch "as a movie" on DVD. I thought the bit was pretty funny, especially the punchline at the end. -
First video game I played in months: 2600 Atlantis!

I liked the original okay. I played about 25 hours, got a little bored and never put it back in again. I liked a lot of aspects of it, bu tI didn't like that it felt like every quest took forever because you'd constantly get sidetracked on these other mandatory bits. I was just kind of distracting, like "come on, let me just go fight the big bad guy... I don't want to go through 4 more hours of something that should be a 'side' quest..." I really disliked the combat at first, but it kind of grew on me. Not my favorite system, but it wasn't bad. On the plus side, I liked the characters and NPCs. Pretty good writing for the most part, except for the whole premise of the game, which didn't make sense at all. That kind of detracted, too. Right off the bad you're set in this world where the overarching theme didn't make sense.

Got a tidy little sum, too: http://allthingsd.com/20130703/the-50-million-man-mattrick-gets-hefty-cash-and-stock-package-from-zynga-including-19-3-million-in-the-first-year/

And you thought the ps2 was dead
BydoEmpire replied to Atari Hacker's topic in Modern Console Discussion
They wouldn't do it unless they felt they could make money. They can probably move 50k copies, and they're not spending a lot on development. They wouldn't do it unless their analysis said it was a good idea. Remember that FIFA is a huge worldwide franchise, so there are probably more active ps2s out there than you might expect... just not in the US. -
The reason we got ugly super nintendo in the USA.
BydoEmpire replied to 0078265317's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Agreed 100%. Diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks, I guess. I think the US SNES looks cool. -
Great find! Used to watch that show all the time, but never noticed the 5200.

Old thread or not, it's still Demon Attack! I like the 2600 version better - it's one of my all-time favorite games - but the Intellivision version is fun, too. Never had any issues with the controls, the demons look as much like demons on the Intellivision as they do on the 2600, and the mothership level is cool. Great music in between levels, too.
-
I loved Tutankham for the 2600! Then again, I also liked Pac Man on the 2600 and Galaga on the 7800...

Well you got farther than me - Netflix crashed while loading 100% for me. Had to pull the power plug.
