I highly recommend "Commodore: A Company on the Edge." Fascinating read. Not all about Jack, of course, but he's obviously a prominent figure in the book and it gives a little bit of insight. Truly a legend in the industry. His company's products certainly shaped my life.

Went to an honest to goodness arcade yesterday. Disney's Riverside resort. It was actually pretty good - played Space Ivaders, Qix, and Millipede.
-
Cool, they have one there too? I've been to Disney Quest in Downtown Disney. I missed out last time I took the family there, but on my Honeymoon (many years ago) that place was off the hook! Also, about a year & 1/2 ago I was at the arcade at the Contemporary. Very cool place and nice setting....seemed '80's like', whatever that means.

Haven't been to DQ in a LOOONG time. $48 entry fee is steep, bu they do have a good selection. Here's my writeup on Riverside's arcade: http://www.gamegavel.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5442&p=32188#post32188

5200 HSC Season 5 Round 5 Keystone Kapers
BydoEmpire replied to zylon's topic in 5200 High Score Club
A little bit better today: 48,300: Once you can't reach the thief by running and you have to use the elevators, I get pretty lost. The three carts & bombs also tend to get me, although I think I figured those out in this last game. -
atari2600.com has some CIB games. They're an excellent online store.

I agree with this whole post. I have a lot of nostalgia for classic games, but I keep playing them because I think they're fun. The 5200 is my most-played console over the last couple years, and I never had one back in the day.

5200 HSC Season 5 Round 5 Keystone Kapers
BydoEmpire replied to zylon's topic in 5200 High Score Club
5200 version: 32,700 (I'll attach a pic later). I remember being better at this game than I am. I feel like I do okay, I just can't seem to get the points. -

Here we go . Atari 2600 vs Intellivision
BydoEmpire replied to atari5200dude82's topic in Atari 2600
I had an Inty growing up, my neighbors had a 2600. They were both great. In fact, I ended up getting a 2600 of my own a couple years later from a friend who traded it to me for some pirated Apple ][ games I had. These days I definitely play the 2600 more (actually, I play the 5200 more, but that's another story) but I still have a lot of fun with the Inty. The controllers pose no problem for me - my hand doesn't cramp, and I find them pretty responsive and accurate. Games like Thunder Castle and Night Stalker hold up really well. Yeah, a lot of Inty games do feel slow (Space Hawk for one), but on the plus side the system just has so many unique, quirky games in its library. If I had to pick one, I'd go 2600 because I'm more into the quick, twitchy, pick-up-and-play games these days and it certainly has quantity, but I'd miss the Intellivision. -
Why Video Games Need to be More Violent
BydoEmpire replied to xg4bx's topic in Modern Console Discussion
I don't think there need to be more realistic violence, I think there needs to be more realistic consequences for actions. My favorite example is Fable. If you're "good" all you can do is give money to the temple. Woop dee doo. If you're bad, you can do all these quests. You can get married, murder your wife, then go back and get married five more times despite the fact that you killed all your previous wives. Stupid. I'd like to see some actual consequence for choice, instead of trying to make both good and evil "equal." It'd be interesting. I'd love to see a game let you choose the 'evil' path, and then when you get caught by the cops, get sent to prison for 30 years. The rest of the game is just wandering around your cell. Start a new game, or enjoy your cell. That'd be funny, but i doubt anyone has the guts to do it. -
Getting a little better - 123,390. I'll upload a pic when I get a chance. Added a small baby board book underneath the controllers to strap them to something solid and it really helped.

I've been digging Retrogaming Radio again - glad to hear it back on the air, so to speak. Love the shoutcasted old episodes, too.
-
Awesome, I had no idea they did those, either.
-
Apparently I'm pretty terrible at this game, but it's still fun. 10,260: My awesome controller coupler (which I'll blame for my low score): I hope I get a chance to put some more time into it, because it's a fun game, I just haven't quite 'gotten it' yet.

Bar Keepers Friend = great contact cleaner
BydoEmpire replied to MaximRecoil's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I've been getting back into NES collecting lately, and I was almost ready to buy some cleaner off ebay. Thanks for the tip - I'll try this first! -
He's starred in so many games and so many games in so many genres - the Intellivision Running Man! I know, not really a character, but kind of... For NPCs I like the merchant in Resident Evil 4 - "What are you selling?" He's just cool.

What was YOUR very first computer?
BydoEmpire replied to OldSchoolRetroGamer's topic in Classic Computing Discussion
The family's first computer was a Commodore 64 - I think we got it in '84 because that's the first year of Compute!'s Gazette I still have. Good stuff. We got it with a 1541, and added a print a year or two later. I still have it, and despite a missing 6 key, it still works (haven't checked the 1541 in a while, though). I never got very good programming it, though, because I was using Apple ][s at school and that's where I spent all my programming time. Amazing games, though. I'm a little surprised how many people mention their TI 99/4A, but it's cool to hear. -
That's fantastic!

Snes and Nes vs S-N-E-S and N-E-S (poll)
BydoEmpire replied to PeculiarSatyr's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I usually say "snes" and "N-E-S". I know I've said "S-N-E-S" before, but I don't think I ever used "nes." Hadn't really given it too much thought. -
Best home version of Donkey Kong?
BydoEmpire replied to Ransom's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I voted c64 since it looked great, played great, and had the pie level. I almost voted for the NES version - to me it looks most like the arcade game, with the exception of the missing level, and plays really well. Okay, some things are in different places. I honestly never noticed. I like the NES version a lot, and that's the version I go to when I get the DK itch. -
Now it's time for SPACE DUNGEON!
