Why I play more Atari 2600 than Xbox 360
BydoEmpire replied to BydoEmpire's topic in Classic Console Discussion
No, but it does get me to having fun playing a video game without all that fuss. Obviously, this post is a little bit tongue in cheek - I am enjoying the game and of course you don't have to do all that stuff every time. Still, I wonder what percentage of development dollars are spent on things totally unrelated to the actual game, but instead all the modern infrastructure - pass codes, email registrations, ad streaming, sdk updates, handling disk eject bugs, handling friend invites, etc. 75%? 50%? -
Loosely by company, but I have two big drawers with 2600 carts. The top drawer has "games I play a lot" and the bottom drawer has "games I rarely play plus dupes." I think I had them alphabetized at some point, but various moves have demolished that system and I haven't gotten around to fixing it and it doesn't seem worth the effort. I don't think I even have 100 carts so it's not hard to find what I'm looking for.

When I was a preteen in the late 70s or early 80s - don't remember the exact year - my mom couldn't find a sitter so my older brother had to take me with him to his friend's house for a D&D session. I wasn't particularly welcome in their gaming session, but his friend had a 2600 in his bedroom and he let me play Adventure all night, lights off, TV flickering. It was awesome. That's how I'll always remember Adventure and the 2600. I eventually got a 2600 of my own a couple years later.

Season #2 - Game #11 Lock 'n Chase
BydoEmpire replied to cparsley's topic in Intellivision High Score Club
I'm pretty terrible at this game, and I never really found it much fun. Played a couple games yesterday, got just over 10k. I'll post a pic when I get a chance, I don't remember the exact score. -
I popped a game into my Xbox 360 for the first time in ages last night. It's probably been a year and a half since I've used my 360 for anything but DVDs. Anyways, I put the disc in: Oops, need to download the patch… Okay, booted up again. Oops, the email I registered w/ publisher is old and out of date. Enter new email & password. Okay, that’s done. I hate the keyboard popups. Okay, let’s get the game going... Oops, need to enter my 16-digit "Online Pass Code." Okay, now I'm at the main menu... Wow, the menu music is awful, let me go to the settings and disable 70% of the tunes... Saving profile... waiting... saving profile... waiting... Okay, now I’m ready to start playing a game! Uh oh, my kid is finished with his bath. I have to go…

New Atari Compatible Console & Controllers
BydoEmpire replied to Curt Vendel's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I'm in the same boat - no spare VGA monitors or compatible TVs, and I don't have space for yet-another-monitor so composite out would be my choice for video output. [Edit]. Ah, looking back at the poll I see composite out seems to be the choice. Perfect. -
Heh-heh... Classic computing in 1984

Is that one of the MSD "Super Disk Drives?" I always wondered how good they were, because the ads in Compute's Gazette made them seem like the best thing in the world. -

Bummer about your house, but that's a great pic - I'm glad it survived. I don't think I have any pics from back then, but I wish I did. -
Can you help me pick a 2600 game for my club at school?
BydoEmpire replied to segasaturn's topic in Atari 2600
My picks for the best games for your club: Single player: Cosmic ark Spider-Man Keystone Kapers Multiplayer: Combat Fishing Derby If you're going to pick one, I'd go with Cosmic Ark. It's got an interesting premise, good variety and challenge in the gameplay, and it's a quick enough game that everyone can get a few rounds it without having to wait too much. Hard to beat multiplayer Combat, though. -
Dear arcade version of Frenzy: why do I love you even though you're so freaking hard?
-
-
Well, ET did have that freakishly long finger, so he could probably ... oh, wait, you're saying that the ET _game_ was hard. Never mind.
-
Hard games can be fun. I never thought Mega Man was the easiest game but it is still fun to play. I want to see this game.

Use use my 7800 to play 2600 games and I'm pretty happy. There are a quite a few good 7800 games and a bunch of great homebrews. [Edit] - seems like you got a pretty good deal, congrats!

I hate to say this, but I haven't heard about Dungeon until this thread (I've been following the 5200 and Inty forums much more often over the last 5 years or so). I checked out some youtube videos and it looks awesome. What a great-looking game.

It is 1Up, after all. Can't say I'm shocked, but what a stupid pick. I'm not sure it ever faded away because that assumes it once existed.
-
I always thought 2600 Pac Man was reasonably fun, but I never really liked E.T.
-
Aha, THAT'S the game I was thinking of. I know I've got the discs for it in the closet, but I didn't have a chance to dig it out and find the title. I was thinking about this kind of game the other day. I played a lot more sim games when I was a teenager. They're more mature titles (actually mature, not "blood, boobs and swearing" juvenile-mature like you see nowadays), but I just had a lot more time to dig into games back then. Now I'm playing pretty much all arcade type games.

Not to dredge this up again, but Sega actually bid MORE than EA. The NFL felt EA could deliver more products, more consistently. The deal guaranteed spinoffs like the Head Coach and NFL Street series. NFL2K and Soul Calibur were the reason I bought a DC. I didn't actually preorder one, but the day it came out a friend brought his to work. After seeing those two games, I went out and bought them on the stop. I drove all over Chicagoland that week trying to find a system to play the games. 2k was a great series.

Intellivision Sub Hunt, definitely. The Sub Hunt game in Sharp Shooter is pretty cool, too - deceptively challenging. I used to play a sub sim on the PC or c64. Can't remember which one, though. Up Periscope?

Bill Kunkel, The Game Doctor, Passed Away
BydoEmpire replied to triverse's topic in Gaming Publications and Websites
Shane did an interview with him in one of the first couple years of Retrogaming Radio and it's one of the coolest, funniest interviews in the 10 years of the show. Loved his column in EG back in the day, too. Definitely a legend. RIP Game Doctor! -
Season #2 Game #10 - Burgertime
BydoEmpire replied to cparsley's topic in Intellivision High Score Club
Took me a little while to get back into it, but I ended up making it to level 7. 50,750. -
Only a few minutes of gaming time today. Atari or Intellivision?

New Atari Compatible Console & Controllers

This sounds fantastic, regardless of the options. The 3200 looks really cool, though (and I already have 2600jr). I could go either way on the controllers. -
Thinking about getting a Bally Astrocade....
BydoEmpire replied to lushgirl_80's topic in Bally Arcade/Astrocade
I've got mine on ebay right now! Before I listed I checked completed auctions and a basic system with a few games were going for around $100, give or take. There just aren't that many out there compared to most other systems. Some of the games are really bad, but some are pretty cool. It's a neat little system, I just never play it.
