Top game!
However if the idea is to liberate Europe with your Spitfire well... the enemy wins everytime, it's just a case of when.
Would love to see a hack of this game with a proper end of level score and maybe each level although been much the same as the other having cosmetic differences such as green grass for level one, orange for desert level two, blue for the sea level three and a bit faster each time, something like that.
I love this game, but it could be greatly improved.
Ka-ka-ka-ka-ka... I'm a pilot with a machine gun.

There are stacks of these white label games ranging from common to rare, sky jinx, rampage, wrestling, pitfall, skateboardin’ and so on. A white label Pitfall isn’t exactly rare and you can get it for half the price of the normal (usually) but it looks incredibly dull. After all carts are getting pulled apart for homebrews (or were) for me customised carts is something that appeals.
I guess it depends on the collector, personally myself I’m not too bothered about rarity factor with my own games, I’ve got them for keeps and I play them like mad so I’d like to make the dull ones a little more interesting on the shelf.
Fair play though, I can see serious collectors not liking the idea, hadn’t really thought of it in that context originally. However a customised Space Invaders cart sounds great to me, a blue cart with the original Teddy Ruxpin alien on it. Fantastic.

Don't bin it, it's top junk, you can easily get another bust one and marry them together as a project. If you do however chuck it do it with some grace, drop it of a cliff or something like that. Where I live prize junk gets thrown into the North Sea, I then mumble under my breath a traditional sea shanty whilst randomly blurbing on about Davy Jones locker to locals out for a nice walk.

Just out of interest does anyone know the score with a PAL system? I presume it should work fine but want to check whether there is any compatability issues.

When I say five different types of label, I mean for the same game.

Really like the look of the coloured and transparent cart cases. I don't know if it's the same for US titles but in the UK there are loads of plain white labelled carts with the name of the game in an Arial or Times Roman font on the label. I got one today and I thought yep it's a game but it looks crap on the shelf along with the other white label games. They are also a very flimsy cases that squash in your hands.
So I'm thinking of ordering some cases, and I thought of doing my own labels for them just to add variety etc. But then I thought it would be good if the idea was thrown into the pit for designing new labels for existing games that come in these crap cases.
It would be original, a generic psuedo brand name could be determined so that if these carts get on Ebay as some kind of rarity they could be easily dismissed as part of the great cart repro schemething. Folk could submit artwork in a standard label template at 300 dpi and other folk could download them print them off and stick them on.
For instance River Raid II a great game but the white label yah boo.
I'm up for doing a few, they might be crap, but imagine five different types of label that people can choose. It also helps boost the sales of new coloured carts.
Any thoughts?

Which Homebrew game is generally considered the King or the favourite.
I realise that hombrew authors are in it for pleasure or hobby and a few extra quid made is a bonus because it I wouldn't have thought that the market for new 2600 games would be that wide these days so I'm guessing that profit margins wouldn't be that favourable for new developers with time invested, packaging costs, cart materials then the dreaded tax deductions.
So I don't wish this question to be an excuse to slate a game you don't like as that's unfair to authors but to reccomend a first purchase of a homebrew to start off with. (Climber 5 is the one I'm considering at the moment hence my previous post)

Mmmm , quite like the idea of getting Climber 5, what's it like for addictiveness, I get the general idea from the screenshots but how many levels are there does it keep you going for a while, after you have done the levels does it remain satisfying doing the game again?
It looks good and it looks like my cup of tea so do I get it?

Thanks for that Whisper, that's a great help. It is finding time with these things, but I shall have a crack at it.

I've got a spare Woody that produces a bit of minor video noise through the RF Modulator, (it's characteristic of RF modulators).
I was thinking of butchering it to produce AV out so that I can put straight into the AV inputs of my TV. I use PAL systems and my TV when taking NTSC inputs through AV is fine, but through the Aerial sockets has tuning problems such as not locking on to signal or rolling screen with no V-Hold.
A few good games come up on Ebay as NTSC versions so I want to get involved with those.
I imagine it would be painless if the audio/video line level into RF modulator is standard, if this is not the case then I can imagine it would be a pain and not worth bothering with.
I'm quite handy with electronics so not scared to dive in, any tips? Has this been done before?

Whereas I am a firm believer of the dishwasher, and for me it produces great results, obviously take the contents out and put the two halves of the shell in. If you do use this method though, use an economy wash with a low tempreture about 30C, it really gets all the nooks and crannys and it truly sparkles.
It's like the million question on Who Want's To Be A Millionaire, do you go for it or don't you. That none of us can decide for you. Phone a friend.

Well... clearly it would seem that tonight I've been drinking cans of Fosters, and have gone one can too many.
I really should be banned for drunk and disordely behaviour on the forum.
Sorry officer, for outlandish outbursts, I think I'll walk home now - hic.

I'd love a copy of that, Cdi can be accomodated but my email wouldn't accept 25MB, the only way I think it can be done is upload to webspace then download or filesharing method, that's then a real hassle for you.
That's massive how in the moses do you get 25MB of Atari 2600 Rom data? I would have thought 5MB tops. Either way it's all top stuff.

Right... I'll look into that. This all started from a magazine banging on about a disc image available for Nero and how easy it was to create a disc. I thought top stuff, went round second hand shops and got hold of a Dreamcast, however I can't find any available disc image so have been trying the manual method.
Am I right in assuming a Dreamcast will be unable to read CD-RW? Released/developed before CD-RW hit the mainstream. This is why I have only been trying CD-R's. If a DC can read CD-RW's then I would be able to experiment without too much frustration.
Cheers

Bought a Dreamcast today purely to run Stella on a TV, I've wasted loads of discs already trying to get it to work following all the seemingly straight forward guidance notes.
Does anyone know of a location for a Nero disc image that's just ready to burn with ROMS intact? I've searched the web and can't find anything.

It's a good job the ET carts are keeping the Pac-Man carts tightly wedged down.
Oops! There I go again, banging on about Pac-Man being crap, I might get banned.

That works out at just over 50p in UK money, which again equates to about half a bread loaf, what a fantastic amount of fun you can get for half a bread loaf, I might emigrate.

Could it be it's a PAL Console on NTSC TV or other way round, I don't know as I've only played a PAL system on a PAL TV but with the colour subcarrier of PAL and NTSC being at different frequencies the luminance (greyscale) will be visible but no colour.
As I say, I've never tried using a different format console to my tv so I don't know what the effect is like, just a guess/suggestion really.
-
Aye, that is the one (the first one), the second looked a steal, I would never have happened across it though, I just tend to do regular searchs "atari 2600 .
My limit for a game is £15-20 if it's very infrequent in listings, I have my big list of wants and I use the rarity guide to get an idea of how much it is or should likely cost me. For instance Pitfall II really want that might have to stretch to a bit compared obviously to space invaders.
When I was a kid, we only had a handful of games, I mean a handful, so we used to rent games from the video shop, now with ebay etc it's great getting hold of the games you always wanted and discovering ones I never heard of. However I am very selective, I don't go for games that I don't want to play and only loose carts. Pac-man and similar types don't get a look in.
-
I didn't know that, still I didn't buy the game for rarity, I bought the game because I really wanted it to play, have played it a lot on Stella, but would rather sit at the TV and play it on a console, I'm more than happy with it at the price as I've not seen one around for the last six months.
-
It does appear to be a fueled debate, I've not even heard of General Retreat, I'll look into that one.
The cart I got was Motorodeo, I paid just short of $23 dollars. It may appear expensive to those in the states, but with the UK exchange rate the pound to the dollar being so good (for us in the UK) it worked out at £12. Which to me is great, I don't buy playstation games but in comparison this is the same price as a plastation platinum game.
This roughly equates to 12 loaves of bread, and extra 3 loaves of bread for shipping.
It's a good time for U.S. sellers to sell on UK Ebay, you could probably get a third more dollars for a sale.
Pal carts though.
-
I bought a Rarity 10 cart loose yesterday, just got me thinking, which is considered the rarest cart to get hold of that WAS released, not a prototype. I use a PAL system so is the rarest cart different for PAL and NTSC.
Any thoughts?

Just got Oink loose cart, find it very addictive.
However, if you had to reccomend a game to somebody that has never played a 2600 and think of them as 8 bit crap which game would it be, not the best graphic but additictive gameplay, a game you can play over and over any genre, common or rare, which would it be?

Storing 2600 cartridges?

I posted this picture a while ago now, boxes that wine bottles came in from Tesco make a good storage unit two or three of them is superb and are made of wood which match the console.
