I really like the aesthetic of the XE line (I also love the XL one, but not mixed up) which is the same as the ST line. So why not to use a SF3x4 drive 3.5" mechanism and case, and then create a XF551 PCB with new smaller dimensions, like the new XF551 PCBs produced by Dropcheck but everything squeezed. I would love to see that drive working along with a 130XE, XM301 modem or XC11 cassette recorder, for example. The xf551 with 3.5 mech just look weird. It is just an idea, no real practical use, but it should be very very cool. What do you think, pals and gals?

YAY! I modified sio2linux.c to add a rudimentary capture to printer data to file. Then I used DOSPrinter to convert to pdf. It worked!!!!!!!! I cannot believe it, yet. There is a EOL convertion probably to be done when dealing with text, but it worked almost perfectly for graphics data in Epson format. I used Atari Planetarium Control-P to print and capture the data. This is the result: atariout2.PDF

Hi I am trying to get Raw printing data in a PC or linux file from the Atari, yesterday I tried Altirra64.exe running in linux using wine (as I usually do), however the printer output window was always empty (lprint and list "d: gave me error 138, I guess). But, anyway my intentions are to capture the raw data from a real Atari (running something like newsroom) using sio2pc homemade cable, and use the file created with the info in dosprinter to see if it works with graphics programs like the already mentioned newsroom or printshop using the Epson FX output. I don't have atarimax software, just a compiled latest version of RespeQt running in ubuntu and sio2linux command line utility. Thanks! Edit: I am also interested in capturing any (not just P:) SIO raw data to understand the functioning of the SIO bus and how Atari 1030 sends booting info to the Computer. Can that be done? maybe something like ser or other linux tool?

Hi All, At th beginning of this topic both XEX and BIN were produced and then at the end , a version in bin format was released. I assumed bin is a ROM image, right? If that is the case, would a XEX final version of the game will be created?. Another question. I really like some parts of the intermediate versions, and other parts or colors of the final one. Is it possible to produce the "utimate guide to sprite hacking of Moon Patrol" with the locations to try our own designs of ships, buggy and colors? Thanks for the amazing job done! M

So I need an Atarimax cartridge to run it in real hardware right? Any other cheaper alternative? Actually, I might consider a more expensive alternative like ultimate or any other cart... I guess AVG cart can make it work, right? I regret not getting an AVG cart when I had the opportunity....

Ok now I undestand your question, but I am not sure how to answer. I guess there are two different parts in the answer: from the hardware point of view, we need the diode and 5v matching levels to make the module work (make it compatible with sio bus). for example, drain current to ground to signal a logical zero. Now from the software point of view, I believe (I might be wrong) an esp8266 can be programmed to work similar to an (im)pefect Atari 850 R: device. Now, with rverter R: handler, the motor signal is used to lift the serial device from the sio bus (it is actually very simple, just one 74ls00). I guess it is a good compromise, since it works and it is very simple to implement. The thing I would love to see is to add more functionality to the esp8266, for example: - React to D1: boot commands at power up to load the default DOS and/or terminal program and R: handler. - Relay printer commands and documents (to P:) to a real printer in the local network. - Have other virtual drives (like D2: for example) redirected to Samba network drive - Have some mechanism to download software (without leaving the Atari keyboard), at request from some place (like pigwa, mushca or atarionline). Kind of a Atari App store system. In other words, the ultimate SIO/networking device.

Great! I hope it came with power supply, if not you can get a TP-M for AT&T answering machine, and change the connector from barrel to 3.5 mm jack. I put the module with the interfacing circuit inside the 1030 and I just connected the 5VDC and GROUND available in the 1030 internal circuit, so the switch of the 1030 turns on both the modem and the esp module. I got an Atari 1010 Recorder for that same reason: SIO connector are difficult to find. Finally I put the esp-01 inside an 1030 Modem (the modem still function along with the esp-01). You can do something similar: find the cheapest Atari device you can get (with pass-thru sio connectors) like 1030, 1010, 1020 and install esp-01 inside. Install the esp-01 inside the Atari computer itself is also a good idea (together with switch to turn it off). With the diode and 74ls00 the Esp module will share the sio bus without problems with other devices. The direct connection also works perfectly, but you need to disconnect the module when not in use.

I suggest this modification , because you can go back to stock 600xl since it requires no change to the PCB. It is just soldering 2 wires and placing 1 jumper. Just my 2¢

What about this covox hardware and software? I am sure the hardware is pretty simple, with some resistor ladder or similar. Interestingly, this one uses the joystick port(s) as can be seen in the picture of the box.

It might be great to do an ESP8266 that can "upload" its own R: handler or accept 850 handler (for compatibility reasons), as we have talked many times before. The SIO2wifi thing we have with rverter handler works great, but it is not enough, given the possibilities of the processing power and memory of a cheap esp8266 module.

I would love to get one of those XF551 boards, but I don't see how I can desolder all parts needed from my XF551 without a good investment in tools, in order to not destroy the components. I have really struggled desoldering 40 pins Antic once in the past and thirty something pins of an OSROM in a second opportunity with a better soldering iron, I am glad those two computers are still working after my amateur job...

A little off topic... What are the advantages (beside the nice touch screen and the XL style case) wrt the sio2sd I already have. Is it functionally similar? I read and read and I couldn't figure it out. Except for the cas and atx support.

BTW, I run the last version of Plato using the ESP-01 w/ rverter. I noticed that the tablet, joystick, etc. menus are back. I tried the joystick I don't know how to use it. I also have an Atari mouse and trackball . Is this functionality really working or I should just wait before trying it and reporting? Thanks for this..Plato is really amazing. This design is almost perfect.. I played yesterday in a real 600XL and I really love it. The animation of the wheels is a little weird though, they look like flickering, instead of the nice animation from the other versions. This is looking very nice.
