  1. None of the cell phone games i played had sound is this just me or do the games really not have sound?

Really? Even the two lame games on my cheesy Kyocera phone have sound.

I ordered an N-Gage QD late last week, but it hasn't arrived yet. I'm looking forward to owning a phone that has some games that are actually worth playing. Snakes Outbreak is high on my list to download as soon as I pick up a memory card.

  2. Good to know the adapter is available at Radio Shack. I guess I'd better start looking now for a memory card.

I just got a tracking number for my order. It's supposed to get here Tuesday, but it's being delivered by Fedex. This means that on Tuesday the driver will make no attempt to find my address, it will be sent back to the Fedex warehouse, and I'll have to waste my lunch hour on Wednesday going to pick it up. The Fedex driver in my area sucks.

  3. I love 2D platformers so that still leaves Pandemonium high on my list, Rayman as well. I'm not a fan of FPS titles so I'll probably give Ghost Recon a miss. Thanks for the heads up on Monkey Ball, I was considering that one.

Am I correct in that there's no way to connect to your PC other than Bluetooth? I'll have to get an adapter if so.

  4. I just found out that you can get a free Ngage QD for signing up with T-Mobile. Been meaning to change my cel provider anyway so I ordered one. What are the best games for this system? Pandamonium looks pretty good. Thinking about that one.

  5. Where can I get custom (are they called Marquees?)

(The arylic front with the graphics/name on it?) I want to have a custom one made

but a LOT smaller. (Mini cab I guess?)

Fantastic quality printwork. They can make any size marquee you need and can do custom printing from your artwork.

What sources are available for this sort of thing? I know I've seen threads a LONG time ago covering this sort of thing but didn't come up with anything.

(From sideart panels to the front madness?)

Quite a bit of classic and custom arcade artwork available for free download here.

  6. 2. Cost issue.  I'm not looking to spend big money.  Preferably under a thousand - a LOT under one thousand.  Do I scout thrifts?  Go to pizzarias with unused machines?  Buy from a dealer or an AA member?

Best bet would be buying from someone you know & trust, which would mean buying from another AA member is always the best option. I own three arcade machines. One I converted to MAME myself from a gutted cab. The other two I bought fully funtional from AA members. Where are you located. I was amazed at how many people with 100 miles of me there are on this and a couple of other gaming boards I frequent.

    3. Shipping.  If I don't get something locally, this will cost an arm and a leg.  Even if I did get something locally, I have no way to transport it home myself (you can't stick an arcade cab or pinball table in a Saturn SC-2).

Obviously you're well aware that paying to having an arcade machine or a pin shipped will eat a huge chunk of your budget. Best bet is to find one locally. If you're able to find an AAer nearby who's into arcade stuff, he's probably also got a truck or an SUV that he hauls around games in. If not, renting a Uhaul is always an option, and not at all expensive.

    4. Multi-cab.  Since I only have space for one machine, should I go for refurbishing an existing cab into a MAME cab?  If so it's a time and resources issue that could take months, which means I won't enjoy it in the interim.

If you think doing the conversion is something that you won't enjoy, then you shouldn't even go there. Very likely the project will get abandoned before you finish it. You may be able to find someone locally who's willing to convert one for you, or even have a pre-built MAME cab for sale. You never know until you start looking.

    5. Obscurity.  Should I go with something classic I enjoyed in my childhood if I get a single cab locked into one game, or do I go for something unrecognized that I never got to play back in the day?

This is a tough call and really depends on your personal taste. I have a MAME cab, a dedicated Space Invaders and a NEO-GEO. If I had to get rid of all but one of them I'd probably have to keep the Space Invaders despite the fact that it only plays one game and the other two are capable of playing many different games. Space Invaders is just kind of special to me since it's the first arcade game I ever remember playing as a kid, and I absolutely loved it. You might consider getting a newer JAMMA cab, since you can swap the game boards out inside with relative ease. That way you're only limed by what boards you have on hand. A lot of the older non-JAMMA classics have adapters available now to allow you to plug them into a JAMMA harness.

    6. Maintenance.  I am no good when it comes to electronics, I'm the kind of shit who buys replacements rather than fix anything or take it out to be fixed (seems to be cheaper in most cases).  Will this hurt me in the long run?

Again, I think this is a good argument for not trying to convert a cab to MAME yourself. Will this hurt you in the long run? Maybe. If something goes wrong you always save a lot of money of you can fix it yourself, doesn't matter if we're talking about video games, cars or dishwashers. You may be amazed at how many problems you are able to fix once you get past the mindset that you can't do it.

In any case, good luck with the search. Hope you find yourself a fun toy!

  7. have you ever heard that toilet's have a 6 foot spray zone? Yeah. So unless you are consistently and anally - no pun intended - closing your lid before you flush, your toilet is totally contaminating every surface within 6 feet of it.

Could have done without this tidbit. I was just in the public restroom here at work, which has an autoflush. I turned and ran before it had a chance to flush, much to the suprise of the person who was walking in at the time. ;)

  8. Sent a letter today. I very politely & briefly explained who and what we're looking for and why. I included the URL for this thread and the URL for the page on my site where I'v been compling the data. I gave my home phone number, my cell phone number, my email address, and a self addressed stamped envelope so there's no reason for this person not to reply even if it's not the M.E. McQuiddy we're looking for. I'm in Oklahoma, so it should only take a letter a couple of days to reach El Paso.

This was over a week ago. Still no response.

  9. QUOTE(Stingray)

I don't know, nor do I care which handheld outsells the other. I further don't care if the DS is discontinued after xmas. I plan to own both, I plan to own the next Gameboy. I don't care which company does better than the other financially. All I care about is the fact that they both make great handheld video game systems, and games that I want to play.

^^^This is the smartest thing I've read here recently.

First time I've ever been accused of that. ;)

  10. Stingray sent a message today pinging me about this and said he had already started a postal letter so I'm deferring that bit to him.

I tried to call again today, but again got the answering machine. Your turn Stingray. I don't want to spook her calling everyday. Maybe send a stamp addressed envelope with it or something to make one less reason for not replying.
