  1. I just loved messing around in the game. I was little back then so I didn't care if it was about how to design circuits and electronics. It was just fun.

That's exactly how I felt about it as a kid. Not sure what the story was behind my family owning a copy. It was either because my dad has a fascination with electronics or he was trying to teach his kids how to make them.

Does any one else remember some thing like an alligator in the software that could chase after you? I know that sounds odd but I remember racing my character through rooms and then trying to block it off with "paths" I'd make or some thing like that.

  2. I'm very sure "Rocky's Boots" was the name of ...Well, I threated it like a game as a kid. I'm told the software was for learning to design circuits. If no one has heard of this software and is wondering what system it was for, it was the Coco 3.

Why I'm bringing the old thing up is when I first played Adventure I instantly remembered playing Rocky's Boots during the 80's.

So here's my question to any one who has messed with RB, was it based in layout & feel off Adventure? The two pieces aren't far apart in age I think.

  3. I got my first Gameboy shortly after the initial launch of the Big White Brick. With it, I got the Nuby hard case that was so popular at the time (at least in the Northeast). It was a plastic case, about the size of a Genesis 2, that carried the system and four games with cases. You could also keep a game in the system, and slide two uncased games into the cavity in the top, making it theoretically capable of carrying seven games.

I thought this was awesome. It was a truly portable game system. One case, and I had a system and seven games at my fingertips! Then I eventually had more than seven games, so I upgraded to a fanny-pack-style case that could hold up to 13 games. It still wasn't that hard to keep everything in one spot. Eventually I was using both the fanny pack and the Nuby case. By now, I've upgraded to the GBA and DS, and since the DS isn't fully backwards compatible, I still carry around my GBA on occasion.

My "tiny little game system" now takes up almost as much shelf space as any other console I have. Granted, that's not much of a complaint, as it really just means I LOVE my Gameboy/DS :D But really, whereas I used to grab one case and run out the door, now I have to pick and choose which games I want to take with me-- or carry around a veritable suitcase of Gameboy stuff. Amazing.

Anyone else in the same boat?

Got the gray brick in Christmas of '90. It came with Tetris but not the black plastic carrying case. I remember seeing them for sale but by the time I was considering buying one my collection went beyond what it would hold. I have over 30 GameBoy games of various GB eras ( meaning old school, color, advance and DS ), accessories ranging from HandyBoy, GameGenie, GameShark, the Card-Reader, to the camera and TV. The Pocket Cheatbook, hardcovers to fit over the Color GameBoy and oh yah the printer. This bundle fits way too snugly inside a 24 audio tape carrying bag that long ago in the 90's I took the plastic out of.

  4. Programmer point of view.

A few years back I was living in a basement that had the complete finishings of an apartment. There was a family living above and I had a job to paint a mural in the youngest boy's bedroom. While I'm painting I hear gun fire and shrieks and pleas coming from the 12 year old's computer as he's playing. I asked him what he was playing and he said "Scientist Kill". I asked him "Are you destroying monsters? Aliens?" The young boy "I'm killing people, there aren't any monsters in this game." To this day as a long time gamer and programmer the statement still horrifies me about what today's youth finds entertaining. Two years after this happened I programmed the most friendly, wholesome shooter game I could make. Yes shooting games can be made in a rated "G" sense, I just wish kids would look to those.

Not with subject. hex65000, you draw those cartoons? Their great. I used to do a newspaper comic named Catwalk and you draw them almost the same way I do.

  5. I've read about this game and even heard it talked about briefly on G4 once a whiles back. "Computer Space" the arcade game that came out before Pong. Can it be found any where on the net for download? Where it stands in gaming history, I think it's an easy bet some one might have re-made it at some point for those into retro gaming.

  6. Sorry that I didn't notice the question. Dude I fear moving this computer around to look but I will in a second ...

Because it might fall on you? :D

    They *are* heavy...

Funny  . It is up high and the last time it was moved around a lot ..The thing kept banging into my ribs and the following day they felt broken. :(

  7. The one you have isn't a 5155, is it?

Sooooo...like I asked, is the one you have an IBM 5155?

Sorry that I didn't notice the question. Dude I fear moving this computer around to look but I will in a second ...

It says "IBM Portable Personal Computer" and nothing more.

  8. Well, we finely sold off the last of our business and got rid of the building that it was in the other day, and among other stuff I got out of it was an old Burrows Work Station (not much use without the Mini computer it was designed to go with, but an interesting curiosity none the less) it has a keyboard, and a 10 key with it, boots and you can type on it, but as I said, without the mini it's not much use.

But I did end up with 4 Tandy computers, color monitors, and keyboards. I think I even have a box for at least one of them. They all boot, the disc drives work, and it's kinda interesting. I also got one Tandy compatible Printer and the cable that goes with it.

Now Tandy is just a Radio Shack version of IBM PC in the mid 80's, not the more popular for gameing Commodore, Atari, or whatever computers, so I have no Idea what these things might be worth. And i guess, that's really my question. What would these things be worth?

I don't remember much, but I did use to play a Basic Pac-man on the thing, and we had Wheel of Fortune for it, and I loved the hell out of Rogue (wish I could find that one again) I think I even played Lemmings (and remembered it was LOUD AS HELL, and you couldn't turn it down (so I ed And of course, it did...well...computery stuff too. Ran on Dos if I remember right.

I don't know, but the guy that had them said they had 20meg hard drives (not that they would work, if they did, but I don't think they did, as they ran on dos, so I don't know)

Anyhow, any Ideas? Is it worth something, is there some more cool games (and easy way sof thetting them?) or is it pretty much junk?

I have a tandy computer with only the keyboard :( oh well. It was only $10 anyway...

If you can get a hold of a floppy drive and get a store to special connect it into your modern computer. You could download roms meant for emulation, give the files to the floppies & play them on your Tandy. Just a guess, not sure that would work but getting a store to connect an old floppy drive to a modern machine that will fly ..at least under XP.

  9. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osborne_1

That's a luggable, or "suitcase computer", as they were popularly known.

Look for any stickers or ingravings on the case. That might give you a clue. (Old computers are something of a specialty of mine. As we speak I'm internally modding a 1541 Commodore disk drive to be device #9 so I can couple it with a stock factory 1541).

When you say case do you mean what's encasing the computer or it's carrier? Ever get a hold of a Gridcase 1520? I swear you could drop that computer from a two story building and it wouldn't effect the machine in the least ( don't worry I never tried doing it when I owned one ). For that "Tank-built" computer a few years ago and maybe even now you could still find compatible software for it on the net.

Guys, I'm going to look up a computer very close to this IBM later and show what it basically looks like.

  10. Laptop or luggable? How much does it weigh. The mid-80's machines usually weighed around 50lbs. and had tiny built-in screens. I have an old Panasonic Sr. Partner luggable. Can you post a pic of it?

I've never heard the term luggable before but it feels fitting to the machine. A computer very close in look of model is said to weigh 40lbs, this computer does hurt you if you put it in it's carrying bag to tote around. Don't think it was made in the mid-80's. When booting at one point you see a copyright mentioning 1980 and on the start screen it has 1982 written with further information of what you'd expect on an old monitor. ( At least that's how I view it being used to Cocos ).

    <edit>

    Didn't notice the question.

My camera needs new batteries, it can't do any thing right now.

  11. Not sure this is the right forum for this topic, so Mod.s I'm sorry if it's wrong.

Has any one here in collecting old hardware ever gotten a hold of some thing unknown to even the company who made it?

I have an IBM "Laptop" that must be one of the first of it's kind. The machine doesn't even pop up on the company's web site in their history and it runs on "1-2-3 Lotus" for it's OS ..at least that's what I'm told since the machine doesn't understand DOS commands.

    Guys I'm a she.

With a 96 percent male ratio on this site (Most of whom are single) prepare to have your P.M. box flooded. ;)

I know I'm in the minority as a female programmer but being a retro video game fan ..that never hit me.

Oh yeah... and, some of the guys around here are merciless. Not to mention that you're a programmer! Heaven help you! :)

Programmer ..if making web sites, a series of art programs and a few games counts? With the software I've only been able to set up consignment deals with a few stores over the years.

  13. Would be great, systemcat.

    Keep up the good work.

Don't forget to follow up and let us know the URL.

The site will be at http://www.buckrogers26thcentury.com/80th.html

Did the coding right after the permission was given and had to add a link so people could go over to the Stella site so they could pick out an emulator to play it. If people would like, since this is HTML is on my hard drive I could do a couple screen shots tomorrow morning? Since it's a bit late where I am right now.

  14. I have three Cocos the first, second and third. My dad used to own one of them plus a Tandy 1000. For the Coco 2&3, Interbank Incident a Graphic Adventure ( at least if I'm remembering right it also works on the Coco 2 ). King's Quest 3 on the Coco 3, Super Pitfall, and Mind-Roll. Didn't use the Tandy 1000 much for gaming but Battle Chess was a neat one.

By the way if the term "ROM PAK" means what I think it does I have a good sized collection of them  .

  15. I'm playing a little trivia game with a friend else where on the internet focused on video games. He said answers can be looked up ...soooo I'm going to ask for help if possible here. This is his last question in the game.

    ________

This game was about a dark knight named Cecil, as he battled the evil Golbez to stop him from waking up the Giant of Babel.

Also, this had one of the best quotes in video game history. "You spoony bard!"

    ___________

I have no idea what this is from.

  16. I already PMed him the day this topic started ..guess he's just a really busy guy. Rom Hunter, thank you for the permission with your site. If your interested in seeing the credit paid I'll give you the web address in a PM. Even though the site isn't up yet I can do a screen shot of it. ..The coding has been a real joy but the page is most of the way there ;) .
