  1. My enjoyment of golf games is also invertly proportional to my enjoyment of real golf. I love the games, dude!

    In chronological order

    1. NES Open tournament Golf. Still good.
    2. Neo Turf Masters (thank Cheezus it's on the SNK Classics compilation)
    3. Wii Sports, Sports Resorts, WiiU Sports golf. Can't get enough of that
    4. The Hot Shots series as a whole
    5. Mario Golf series in general
    6. Golf Clash on iOs

I just bought Awesome Golf for the Lynx and I can't wait to own a Lynx to play it :P

I'm planning on getting a Switch in 2019 and Golf Story is one of the titles I just have to have.

  2. I'll have to give the Shockwave codes a try. That game pissed me off I found different variations of the codes on different pages and I could not get the invincibility code to work. That game ses crazy hard once you get to the Las Vegas level so I can't get beyond that! The game is actually really fun and I'd like to burn through it and the sequel but there isn't enough energy/shield/life to survive all the damn attacks and beat the levels for me.

I have yet to play this, but I will, and it seems like you have to sort of enter cheat mode before you can actually input cheats? I don't know.

  3. My mom really liked Dr. Mario and Yoshi's Cookie on the NES. Now all she plays are those silly mobile hidden object games.

My dad only ever plays computer card games.

You should have gotten Dr Mario/Tetris for SNES. It adds 2 player Tetris and even Dr. Mario vs. Tetris!

Yeah well, things are what they are. They kept playing their Tetris and what not and I was playing NBA JAM or some shit lol

  4. My parents only ever liked 3 games.

    1. Super Mario Bros.
    2. Tetris
    3. Dr. Mario

Special mention to Clu Clu Land, which I remember playing with my dad, we rented it a few times.

Me and my brother litterally had to share the NES with our parents, who both enjoyed those 3 huge classic games. But once I started getting more into action games, they didn't follow. And when the SNES came around, my dad still only wanted to play Tetris on NES.

  5.

Because it's complex to bring hardware to market at a value price? I think the "communication" in question here isn't just between Joe Tuber and the public ... there's also the designers/developers, the rights holders (these are all licensed, which can't be simple), the retail distributors (who have expectations and demands of their own), the manufacturers (in China, making big production runs of these), and maybe some other parties we don't see? I can easily imagine how a seemingly small slip-up in communication anywhere up and down the line could have the impact we're seeing here.

I still think the OH NOES of the YouTube set is overblown. So they're NES/Famicom rather than arcade versions as "promised" by Hancock. Okay. Buy them or not, the word is spreading in either case. As home versions go, NES ports of Namco games are okay.

This isn't exactly "this product doesn't work at all" (like some of the Classic NES peripherals from a few years ago) or "this product literally catches on fire and destroys your property" (as I experienced a several years ago with some Wii rechargeable batteries). If disappointment over the discount video game is the worst thing that happens to a person this quarter, that's pretty good.

Let me state that I have watched 0 videos bashing AT and/or their products, only I am aware of them. I get direct feedback from members of collector groups so the facts and opinions I go off of aren't as volatile as YT's comment sections or YT content creators in dire need of views.

But yeah, your first statement goes with what I said : it's the development process which needs improving. I was merely highlighting that every subsequent PR effort is band-aids on broken limbs and that it'd be best if limbs were not in a position to break in the first place.

The metaphorical limbs here are AT's rep and people's enjoyment of their products.

  6. I'm going to throw some oil on the fire here, just because this is the internets.

For starters, note that I'm absolutely going to buy an Atari Flashback Gold Premium Stuffed Crust 9 when I can get one (this particular product line-up has a decent track record), but I still have to throw my two cents in:

Why is it that for most, if not every AT product, something f*cks up and we are told the real issue was communications? Like, at every turn "the real mistake was not communicating the info in time". I feel like if you have to communicate something better, every time, at every release, the problem can't just be about communication. I admit that Bill's input does give me a more positive image of AT, but more in a "there is yet hope for them" way, and not in a "oh I was mistaken this whole time" way.

There shouldn't be the need for more explanations/communications if business was sailing along smoothly. I don't need PR telling me things were bad before, but they are okay now, I want the product and/or it's manufacturer's reputation to speak for itself in a positive manner.

And this is why no matter what people say here, I'm never buying an AT Sega Geneses Classic. I'm the mainstream consumer that can't risk his money of maybe-good-maybe-shit products.

    7:SL68 is The Project
    8:SL69 is Head To Head
9:SL71 is the secret Planet X Boss level.

The Planet X Boss level was never intended to be in the game. One of
the programmers was done early and decided to add an extra feature.
The Planet X Boss level was the result, but was unfinished and left
out of the game. The premise behind this scenario is that the Boss, a
robot, tries to shoot Gex with a shrink ray. After a while, a green
orb will fall from the ceiling. Gex will grow larger each time he
eats the orb. If Gex can eat the orb three times without being shrunk,
he will be large enough to defeat the robot. After the Boss is
defeated, and the game is allowed to continue without pressing the
D-pad, Gex will eat various objects that will appear on the screen.

  8. Hello all first time poster here. My 3dos internal fan has been running continuously so long as the console is plugged in. Is that normal or a common issue? How would I be able to fix it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It could be a number of issues:

    • Heat not dissipating forces the fan to continuously run
    • Thermostat can be misreadin internal temperature, keeping the fan running
    • Fan motor may be aging and is making a lof of noise which you hadn't noticed before

If it were me I'd get a new console, but I'm no expert.

  9. "-Having A Genesis or SNES makes owning a TG-16 redundant. Most of the best 16 bit titles went to those two systems."

    Shameful.

Most of the best..but not all. Backwards compatibility is a logical reason to point to actual redundancy, and I can stand to see the 3DO get pissed on...because it sucks. But having Mario and Sonic doesn't make Bonk redundant, having Musha and Axelay doesn't make Blazing Lazers redundant, having Castlevania IV and Castelvania Bloodlines doesn't make Dracula X redundant, etc etc etc.

    STOP RIGHT THERE.

The 3DO should get pissed on here because it offers very little in terms of console exclusives, but not because it sucks. Most of its better titles can be found on other consoles, yeah, but they are good titles nonetheless.

  10. Is it bad that the games I'd be the most eager to hack in a N64 Classic are mostly the WcW/nWo titles?

lol All jokes aside Nintendo can easily blast this one into the stratosphere with 1st/2nd party titles alone as the N64 is the current freshest-nostalgia fuel.

The system was never about an impressive 3rd party library. The only games that will truly be missing (in the mainstream eye) are GoldenEye and Perfect Dark. Yet most "casual nostalgics" will probably be content with Mario64, Zeldas, Mario Kart 64 and Mario Party.

Shit I'd want one even if it only had MK64 and WaveRave64 on it.

Maybe I just like plastic casings that say "Nintendo"

  11. eBay has been really good lately for boxed Lynx games. Bought a Tournament Cyberball and a Xybots, NOS NIB, for about $10 each plus a few bucks for shipping. I'll probably buy the same games again as loose just to keep these NOS. I hate being the person that opens NOS stuff unless it's absolutely necessary.

    Blaine

Oh I see them on there. The problem? I'm in Canada. $10 becomes $13, shipping become $16, import fees are $7. So a $10 game becomes a $40 game rather quickly lol

  12. ...Why?

People didn't even seem to care about CD-i that much back when it was relevant; it's more infamous than famous, and that's because of the Mario and Zelda games. Also in terms of games actually worth playing, I honestly can't think of much besides Burn:Cycle (which I could've sworn was a 3DO game but guess not). I'd much rather have a 3DO Classic, tbh; that system actually has a nice handful of pretty good and interesting games, enough to fill out a collection of like 20-40 pack-ins.

I mean, a CD-i classic makes about as much sense as a Tandy VIS Classic....there's no real point. And there's a stable of other systems easily more deserving of a Classic mini ahead of either of those two. Off the top of my head, you've got PC-Engine, Saturn, Dreamcast, 3DO, Gamecube, and I wouldn't mind some kind of mini-arcade Classic-type thing in the vein of the Arcade1UP series (but better specs) for the CPS2, Namco System series , Sega System + Model series of arcade systems, or Atari's arcade games from the '80s and '90s on a single cabinet. $300 for any of those would be worth it if they were done right.

I'm pretty serious about my 3DO and I can assure you there aren't 20 exclusive games on there you'd want to play. Most of the hot titles have been ported over to other consoles or were originally released elsewhere and then were ported to the 3DO. For example, Dragon's Lair often comes up when discussing the 3DO library, but that's on every.other.console.in.existence. True quality exclusives are hard to come by here : Blade Force, Monster Manor, AD&D Slayer, Immercenary, Phoenix 3, Twisted … and I'm stumped. That's not to say that a hypothetical 3DO Classic shouldn't have the best titles from its library on there, just that you wouldn't need a 3DO to play most of them. But STARFIGHTER would be a must, since the 3DO version is hands down the best version out there.

    So there's Burn:Cycle and??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Are there 15-20 good games on the CD-i people would want to play?

    1. Burn:Cycle

    2. Flashback

    3. Dragon Lair II??

    4. Zelda Cd-i??? (If they get permission)

    5. Other Zelda Cd-i??? (If they get permission)

    6. Other Zelda Cd-i??? (If they get permission)

    7. Hotel Mario??? (If they get permission)

    8. Flowers of Paul Mapleforp?

    9. ?????

    10. Maybe Mad Dog mccree?

Yo, where's Mutant Rampage Bodyslam? That's a top tier game in the CD-i library.

  16. I'm hella surprised to see Star Force (NES) mentionned here. That game is super nostalgic for me, but I never really thought of it as "one of the greats".

The NES is mostly where it's at for me, with such titles as :

    • 1943
    • Gun.Smoke
    • Legendary Wings (rather easy but quite enjoyable)
    • LIFE MADDACRAKING FORCE
    • B-Wings (famicom/multicart staple)

Raiden (arcade) remains a favorite of mine. There are numerous clones that are worthwhile, also. I couldn't name one, but I remember playing a bunch of Raiden wannabe sharewares in the 90s and most were good.

If people are allowed to mention Panzer Dragoon (god tier stuff, this), then I'll give Star Fox 64 the nod. And in that vein, Total Eclipse on the 3DO.

    Also, Phoenix HD on iOS.

  17. The Need for Speed is probably the biggest one for me. It just never "clicked" with me until earlier in the year. Now it's one of my favorites on the system.

Slayer is one I didn't like way back when, but I put some more time into it recently and it made a lot more sense to me. I could see myself going back to it again when the time permits.

NFS. Really. Maybe I can give it a shot and see if our experiences line up. I can't see it becoming my favorite on the system since I already play my 3DO a lot, but who knows? Maybe it won't be the snooze fest I remember it being. Also I know we agree on Blade Force...maybe that's another one I could get back into and have a better time? I keep wondering if sticking with it for more than a couple levels might do it.

When it first came out, I thought Twisted was the most ridiculous game on the system. I couldn't make it through an entire game without cutting it off. Several years later, a friend and I played it together. It created instant laughs and fun gameplay between us. I've loved the game ever since. That was back in '96 or so. Still love Twisted. Just played it with my son and with my wife for the first time. My son enjoyed it a lot. My wife? Well, she's where I was at 25 years ago with it. It's an acquired taste, but it gets more charming once you play it with another human being instead of against the computer.

Strangely, I had this same experience with the movie Dumb & Dumber. I walked out of the theater mid-movie the first time I saw it. Later, on home video, I thought it was hilarious. I still make "the most annoying sound in the world" at my wife from time to time. I'm pretty good at it.

Party games are typically enjoyed best with fellow humans. Even modern ones like Mario Party are better kept for when you have people over. One thing tho : Dumb & Dumber was always brilliant.

  18. Something happened that inspired this topic:

Were there any 3DO games you couldn't play before that you now enjoy?

I was never into Slayer. Not a D&D kinda guy, but I do like RPGs in general. I always lauded playing this one.

I bought it for the sake of collecting and my first few recent attempts at playing it always left me sorta disappointed. I died a lot and never really knew what I was doing or where I was going. The only good thing I could say about it was that it moved like an FPS at least, and not like some screen-by-screen nightmare (Dungeon Master, Eye of the Beholder, that sort of thing).

That's until yesterday. I caught a cool gameplay video on YT that showed me a couple things I hadn't considered and I ended up playing for 1+ hours last night and I have the itch to get back home and play it again asap.

    Here's some pro-noob advice:

    • DO NOT create a character, unless you're knowledgeable about AD&D.
    • DO pick a melee class, unless you're knowledgeable about AD&D (with a mage you'll be running away a lot, until you pick up items that help killing baddies)
    • DO use the items you find. Inventory is limited so it's better to use the potions and scrolls as you go than to hoard everything and die with your backpack full.
    • DO hit Select to bring up your map, you'll see the full layout of the floor you're on
    • DO NOT apprehend dying. If it happens, you can re-start with the same items in your inventory and equipment (i think), sort of like New Game+, so you get a proper second chance at finishing that floor you died on.

Seriously, choosing a pre-rolled character will guarantee that you will have the required HP to tank hits, the required STR to wield weapons, the required stats to equip armor, etc.

The full map also auto-fills as you explore, so it's easy to tell where you have and haven't been, making navigating through the randomly generated mazes much more statisfying. Also, most walls and corridors look similar so the map is a great help there, too.

tl;dr choosing to play as a pre-built Fighter and using the map make this game MUCH more enjoyable for me.

  19. My buddy recently came across his old 3do at his parents' house, and didn't really want it. So we made a trade, I gave him a Nintendo mini and a stack of classic rock records (we're both vinyl hounds), and we're both happy with the deal. I hadn't played any 3do since hanging out at his place as teenagers in the 90s, so I've been pretty geeked up about it. I had actually preordered Forza Horizon 4, but haven't played more than a couple hours of it this week because I've been so hooked on Wing Commander III. This was the initial haul:

    onlJBVa.jpg

In the meantime, I informed all of my local gaming buddies that I was in the market for 3do games, and was able to pick these up from a friend of a friend and a couple of local game shops. I already owned the Brain Dead, but the others I just picked up this week. I don't think there's much more 3do stuff in my neck of the wape, but I was definitely happy to find these locally:

    NFY0Wef.jpg

I'm pretty dang pumped to finally own one, and I've been having a blast with it so far.

    Great lot!

Some titles there are really representative of the 3DO spirit. There's happy times there for sure.
