  1. Question to those who played LEGO:

Is it similar in style to the Star Wars games, as in it's sort of tongue in cheek and let's you fool around with the environments?

Yes, it's basically more of the same. Of course, the action fits the Indy-verse, so there's no characters comparable to the Jedi. One significant advancement is that characters have tools and can pick up the tools of others. So there might be a puzzle that requires digging. If you have Sallah or some other character with a shovel, you can just do it. But if you don't you might be able to find a shovel and use it with any character.

Of course, there are only three "episodes", so it might seem short if your only experience is with "The Complete Saga". There's also the problem of a lot of characters that just aren't individual enough. How many different German soldiers do you need?

Still, there's lots of fun to be had and if you are an Indy fan it's well worth it. There's even an unlockable Han Solo and a few other Star Wars references scattered throughout.

  2. With the recent release of the fourth film in the series and the upcoming new game, Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings, I thought it was about time to look back on the previous games based on this popular character.

Quite a wide range of play styles on many different platforms. Which is your favorite?

  3. Two things:

    1) I did say we weren't counting UMD, people. Pay attention! ;)

I have many UMD movies (twenty-two if I'm counting correctly), compared to something like eight games for that machine. But those movies weren't originally intended for watching on a TV. That ability came later and I didn't want to get into all the portable media types.

    2) 108 votes, 108 have DVD. I really thought there might be *somebody* who didn't have one.

  4. It's definitely one of the most successful, but nowhere near the longest. Sherlock Holmes, Batman, Godzilla, and Dracula have been around a lot longer.

Well, I'm willing to concede Godzilla is a slightly longer running film series so far (1954 - 2004 vs. 1962 - 2008), though I think the decision (three times) to intentionally cease production with no clear indication if or when they would start up again breaks it up a bit. (And btw, James Bond *did* make his live action debut a few weeks before Godzilla made his. The "Casino Royale" episode of Climax! aired on October 21, 1954, while Godzilla opened on November 3 of the same year.)

On the other hand, while Sherlock Holmes, Batman, Dracula, Tarzan, Superman, etc. have all had films made about them over a longer period, they are not all part of the same *series*. Batman, for instance, can be broken up into the serials, the '66 movie, the Burton/Schumaker films and then the Nolan films. Four *different* series, not one.

So, James Bond is the longest film series *in continuous (and current) production*.

  5. The James Bond film series is the longest running series in film history and one of the most successful. Naturally, this (and not the success of the novels) has led to many video game adaptations over the years. While there were console and computer games in the first decade, it was the release of GoldenEye for the N64 that catapulted the James Bond brand name into the limelight as far as video games are concerned.

What do you think is the best of the lot? Which best captures the feel of the James Bond series? Which is your favorite? What do you think makes a successful Bond game?

  6. And by "hooked up", I mean pretty much ready to go. If you've only got it unhooked because you lack enough inputs or cables (I have only one HDMI cable to share between my HD DVD and Blu-ray players, for instance) and it can be quickly plugged in, that counts. The old laserdisc machine that's in the attic and never gets pulled out doesn't. (Unless you want to go hook it up before answering, of course.)

And I'm limiting this to physical media that had commercial distibution of material intended for viewing on televisions because if we start getting into other media, we have to deal with VideoNow, UMD, etc. (Yes, I know you can watch UMDs on televisions now, but that's not for what it was originally *intended*.) And, though it is interesting, I'm not asking about having purely digital distibution available, either. (Because, technically, just about everyone has that available, whether they use it or not.)

Anyhoo, just trying to get some idea what people have "at the ready" for watching their stuff.

  7. The funny thing for me about seeing this roughly year-and-a-half old thread is that even though my actual *obsession* with Lara Croft and Tomb Raider has ebbed (I haven't even gotten the new game, yet), I'm still getting things for this collection.

Since the photo was taken, I've gotten two more sealed action figures, a novel (which I actually alreay had at the time, it was just in a box, so I didn't know it), a "Cradle of Life" junior novelization, a second copy of the first movie on DVD (different cover), *both* films on UMD, the first movie on HD DVD, first movie soundtrack CD, a few more strategy guides, "Curse of the Sword" (GBC), "Prophecy" (GBA), some demos I scrounged up, the PS2 cheat disc for AOD, and a virtually complete set of the first TR trading card game. And more, I'm sure.

I also got two special trading cards: the first autographed by Chris Barrie, who played Lara's butler in the films, but is better known as Rimmer from Red Dwarf, and a "Cradle of Life" fabric card; one of those with a piece of Angelina Jolie's costume embedded in it.

You see, once an obsession takes me, it never really dies, just kind of goes into a slow burn...

  8. Well, that took too long. I've been a bit sick (clingy cold) and let this go for a bit.

    A-a-a-a-a-any-whooo......

    It's the final match!

Galaga vs. Asteroids. Arcade editions, both.

If Galaga wins, it's the champ. If Asteroids wins, we'll do it all again (double elimination, don't you know).

    Go!

  9. It took a while for me to get it, but I'm finally making my way through New Super Mario Bros. The alternate is more Nintendo platforming, Super Princess Peach.

Wow nintendo really made a mistake of releasing that game for the 360

    Whoops!

The hazards of following a "similar topics" link without noticing where it goes!

    Nothing to see here...

    Move along...

    Move along...

  10. So, round six. Two from the L bracket, 1 from the W.

    BATTLE 15

Yes, it's Adventure taking on Galaga.

    BATTLE K

Centipede vs. Asteroids: the battle of the classic shooters.

    BATTLE L

Super Mario Bros. set the stage for platformers as we know them. Tempest set the stage for...Tempest 2000 and Tempest 3000...

  11. Yes, I know. It's late. Again. Well, better late than never, I always say.

Two solid victories last week and two sqeakers. ONWARD!

    BATTLE 13

Who can stop Adventure? Centipede got an ode.

    BATTLE 14

Super Mario Bros. got a movie. But that probably works in Galaga's favor.

    BATTLE I

Asteroids got a song. But Yar's Revenge got what was

    .

    BATTLE J

Tempest got a comic book character named after it. Kaboom!...didn't.

  12. It's PHASE IV!

    Back to the L's.

Okay, so I screwed up big last night and mistakenly listed Centipede as the loser against Keystone Kapers. My bad. Here's the restart.

    BATTLE E

ROCKS! (Asteroids). MONSTERS! (The Legend of Zelda).

    BATTLE F

BUGS! (Yar's Revenge) PLUMBERS! (Mario Bros.).

    BATTLE G

    SUE! (Ms. Pac-Man). TUBES! (Tempest).

    BATTLE H

    COPS! (Keystone Kapers). BOMBS! (Kaboom!).

    post-51-1221225055_thumb.png

  13. So the third phase begins with a return to the W bracket.

    BATTLE 9

The mighty Adventure for the Atari 2600 goes toe to toe with another alltime 2600 favorite, Ms. Pac-Man.

    BATTLE 10

Another 2600 game, Keystone Kapers , takes aim at Centipede for the Atari 7800.

    BATTLE 11

Super Mario Bros. for the NES faces early arcade favorite Asteroids.

    BATTLE 12

Popular arcade shooter Galaga against the epic Yar's Revenge for the Atari 2600.

  14. I am *not* a fan of digital downloads, but I will probably go against my better judgement and buy Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People. It's download only for either PC or Wii, so I might as well get it for the Wii. It seems like fun if you are a fan of Homestar Runner.

I'd avoid the Virtual Console unless there's a really rare game that you just have to play. It's better, in my opinion, to buy the real thing, if you can.

  15. Let's not forget that other company that held the patent on virbration feedback that sued Sony & Xbox. If I recall, Sony simply settled, and Xbox lost.

I'm pretty sure you've got that backwards. Sony fought and that's why there was no rumble in the original PS3 controllers. Microsoft settled.
