In the video I did on this, PPII was never an issue other than slight graphical glitching on the 7800 rainbow BIOS screen and occasional flickers of pixels that shouldn't be on the track selection screen. Otherwise the game itself was always fine. BallBlazer was the only game to actually cause the 7800 to lockup with any degree of certainty. And it was just luck really that I happened upon what was up. Anyway, @Trebor owns that 7800 used in the video now and unless he has been too polite to tell me otherwise, it has been working fine since I added that small cap to it.

My Pole Position II cart just gives a black screen 9 x out of 10, the times it does boot it usually corrupts like your video (but does not crash the system). I don't have Ballblazer on cart so no idea if that one works.

On my DF the only games I have had issues with are, Pacman Collection & Pacman Collection 40th Anniversary.

Pacman Collection - I started a game of Ms Pacman and the maze was the wrong colour, it corrected itself on stage 2

Pacman Collection 40th Ann - It crashed the system (garbage on screen) about 10 minutes into playing Pacman

I'll add that cap, it can't hurt to try!

I’m still making them. 😀 I’ll send you a PM with instructions.

I bought mine ages ago, love it!

I have the cart and instruction manual, can you get the actual box from anywhere?

  3. Just received a CX-80 Trak-Ball today but it looks like it's been damaged in transit. (see photo)

Just wondering if it is repairable as the ball in these things is really heavy? I doubt that a Super Glue fix would last long?

As you can see it's where the bearing is seated which holds the Ball in place.

What would you suggest to get a long lasting/strong repair? :?

A real shame as the rest looks in really good condition :_(

  4. I actually (unfortunately) ended up tossing mine. I couldn't get a singe game to load, no matter what I did (and I have experience with these kind of things, so I'm not a noob at this). No switch settings, hardware settings, file extension rename, nothing worked. Just got the TIA 'stuck' (i.e. random vertical bars) screen no matter what I did. I followed every instruction on here, in case I did do something wrong... Nothing.

Luckily I have CPUWIZ's development cart, which is awesome... and it's a good thing because my cuttle cart II died a *long* time ago.

Yep, I've had 2 go the same way. Won't be buying another.

I do not have any alternative, so am waiting patiently for the Concerto's final bugs to be eliminated. Hopefully it will then be released into the wild...

  5. I'd never heard of this version of Pac-Man, what a great game!

Been playing under emulation today as both my Mateos carts died last year :_(

I'll await the Concerto now I think, whenever that's released into the wild....

Loving all your games, keep up the great work!!

  6. Bryan's audio board working perfectly now, had to use a different solder pad for the Pokey. Now a perfect mix :-D

I recommend this board, it great!

Just one thing, my Mateos cart has stopped working! You fix one thing, and another breaks, pooooo! :_(

Guess I'll have to buy another one...

Interesting, I could have sworn that Bryan stated he set this to be mixed properly between the TIA and POKEY? But if not, then you are better off handling the audio out as I usually do. Clip the north legs from the R5 and R6 resistors near the red coil for tuning audio and solder them together. Then from that point, solder on the + lead from a 10uf 16v cap and the negative to your center connection on the RCA output for audio.

Perform the color calibration within the first minute or two of the console started up "cold" [The console has been powered off for 30 or more consecutive minutes].

Just as important is to make sure Hue 1x appears as gold - not green or chartreuse. On modern flat panel displays, this will likely require shifting the tint/hue controls on the display to a 'more red less green' setting. On a CRT, it is a non-issue.

In the capture below of the Diagnostic cart running, the swatch representing Hue 1x is highlighted with a red box:

Crossbow, yeh the audio is mixed very well between the TIA & Pokey. However, the audio levels are not correct. If you have the sound high enough to enjoy the Commando music, the sound effects are overpowering. I may remove it and do as you suggest, Thanks!

Trebor, thanks for the tips. I always believed that you needed to wait until the console had been on for over 30 minutes before color calibration. I've never been that satisfied with the result, so will do as you suggest and calibrate from a cold start.

Is it the same for 2600 mode?

Update: Bryan has replied and is assisting me with the audio board. Said it should be balanced, so maybe I've done something wrong

  8. Received the 'tiny' sound board from Bryan,

It sounds really great, but I have a little question.

I mailed Bryan, but I suspect he's a busy chap. In the meantime..

Does anyone know how to balance the sound between TIA and Pokey. The music is really quiet compared to the sound effects in Commando.

Putting resistance between the TIA's audio output and the board makes no difference at all...

I connected the board exactly the same as the picture posted by Bryan in this thread. (page 2)

One, more thing. Is it best to tune the colors for Maria and TIA after the system has warmed up, or cold?

There seems to be differing opinions regarding this....

  9. Hey flashjazzcat,

just thought I would let you know that my random black screen, at bootup, issue has gone away.

I had a problem with the keyboard, keys working intermittently. Particularly Start button.

I therefore bought a new mylar off Fleabay which fixed the problem. The strange thing is, it also seemed to fix the VBXE black screen issue also.

May be a coincidence, but I'm a happy chappie :)

  10. What is going on is my 130XE with VBXE started having issues and had not got around getting replacement parts. Also something is going on in my personal life so it may not be repaired until things get settled. So I have to rely on the emulator. I do not see how something can work great on the emulator and not work on real hardware, I cannot be doing something that drastic or there should not be that big of a difference with the emulator. The monitor in Altirra is a great tool that it easy to see what is going on. I only do periodic updates for game images to test on real hardware as it takes time to copy or re-flash, etc.

Video61 only wants to support as far as Stock Atari 8-bit machines and not support anything beyond that. Different people have machines configured differently. I want to make this work because future VBXE games are at stake. Has anyone looked into doing Gauntlet or Galaga yet? Those are two games suited for VBXE. I have considered a Secretum Labyrinth game that supports VBXE instead of relying on SuperIRG and Multicolor Player/Missile sprites showing in alternate frames.

I have never got my VBXE to work reliably :(

It sometimes boots with a black screen, tried fixing it (unsuccessfully).

I just live with it now, it is just a small annoyance...

  11.

My only comment on this - besides that it would be awesome if a semi-standard internal POKEY upgrade was available! - is that desoldering an IC without damaging it or the board is a bit harder than simply adding a few wires and clipping a resistor or two for an A/V mod. :P

Not if you have a Hakko ;)
