  1. Oh, what an old thread. If I remember correctly, I did browse through at least part of my games magazine collection, but couldn't locate the screenshots that I remember. Does anyone have any more information about this game today? Screenshots, etc. In other words... *bump*
  2. Sorry for jumping in without reading the thread (Diablo is just a clone Gateway to Apshai/Gemstone Warrior imo) but this sentence above caught my eye. Are you saying that the source code for the original M.U.L.E. by Dani Bunten is availible somewhere? That surely has got to be a type of some sort, because otherwise the game ought to have been ported to SDL and all kinds of platforms, with net play and all a long time ago.
  3. Madness! But oh, so wonderful. I wonder if that OS code you wrote could be patched into one of the open source Atari 8-bit emulators to make a dedicated and easy to use AR package? One that you basically just fired up and played without ever noticing any disk swap or needing to configure anything...
  4. As I mentioned in a post further down the page, I did play the C64 versions while visiting friends, and the ST versions I had were (ahem) pirated (though my collection of original boxed ST games is around 100 I think). It's only recently that I've begun collecting certain games, but the trouble for me is that I'm sort of allergic to buying used products, and finding NIB games is rather difficult and costly (especially so since I remove the shrink wrap anyway so the value immediately drops). Also, to be picky, the CD32 & Playstation versions are 100% perfect ports of the 16-bit IK+
  5. I have the IK original right here... One for Atari and one for C64 Because the C64 has color cells and the Atari has not. 1023079[/snapback] Ok, I saw a disk on Ebay as well (though under the "World Karate Championship" name from Epyx). The say you say "the C64 has color cells" makes it sound like the C64 ought to have better graphics, but from the screenshot above, it looks like the other way around to me... Ads and dealer lists? Could it be possible to obtain a NIB (new in box) version of this game today? I'd be very interested, if that is the case. I've Googled a bit more for images and info on the C64 version. Could it be that my Commodore owning friends had some sort of pirated version which didn't have that particular scenery with which the Atari screenshot was made?
  6. What? But... how could I have missed it? No Atari User magazine I have ever mentioned it for the Atari and no gaming store I ever visited had it either, and I was always jealous of my friends with Commodore 64 machines who had the game. How come the graphics were different? That's interesting. I know that Archer Maclean wasn't payed a penny for the Studio 3 version, though (that's why he released his own GBA + PSX versions through Ignition).
  7. From this site: http://ekranownia.atari8.info/galeria.php?lit=i What the heck is going on here? I thought that IK wasn't released for the Atari? And those graphics look absolutely wonderful... kinda like the Atari ST graphics! But then again, many games in that site's listing seem to have extremely good graphics for an Atari, and I've never heard of most of them, so I don't know what exactly that site lists. (For those who don't know, the Atari ST had an "official" port with completely revamped graphics no other system got.) I guess it's against the forum rules to ask where to acquire this... ahem... But just so you know how serious I am about wanting to learn more about this:
  8. I just have to pop in and say that that C64 version is bloody impressive! Absolutely stunning work, WVL.
  9. Well, the date of the files says 2005-12-31 and it's the second latest release (the very latest is just a few days old, but doesn't have a WinCE compile yet, it seems)... but I don't have a device to test it with yet so I don't know...
  10. I just did a Google and it seems that the Atari800 emulator has a WindowCE port... http://atari800.sourceforge.net/ I will probably be testing this when I get my device (which incidentally will be a Qtek S200 or Dopod 818 Pro, which are both HTC Prophets anyway... and that sentence will probably only make sense to PocketPC fans, but anyway).
  11. That's amazingly stupid of people, then, since an analogue stick can be set to act as a digital one, but you can't do it the other way around (especially if you have a d-pad). Damn, is that so? I didn't know since the device I want isn't out yet, so I haven't really begun looking around for programs I want.
  12. I was interested in this for awhile, but I was put off by the fact that the joystick wasn't analogue (why have a joystick instead of a d-pad if you're not going to make it analogue?). But I'm soon getting a Windows Mobile 5 device, and I do hope that I can get The Dungeon running on that...
  13. You could try asking the AR mailing list. I think we're still over a 100 people subscribing to that (including Dan Pinal & Ken Jordan... Phil & Gary used to be a part of it, but they disappeared). http://www.avatardesign.net/alternatereality/
  14. I always loved the introduction screen music from Gemstone Warrior by SSI and was reminded about it when listening to Aalyiah's We Need A Resolution just now (the rap part use a few very similar bars), so I thought I'd ask here. I suspect that it is a piece by Bach originally...
  15. Ooh, the boardgame Talisman was great! Unfortunately, I can't get SainT 1.99d to recognize your .ST file, so I can't run this to see how it looks.
  16. Hello Mr. Gilbertson! Glad to see that you're still around (though sadly Mr. Price is still mysteriously silent). You left us on the mailing list without a word, and we were a bit worried! I'm downloading one of these music videos now, and it will be interesting to see what it is. Stop by the new mailing list some time if you wish: http://www.avatardesign.net/alternatereality/ Hope to see you around more often!
  17. Yeah, ok, but nobody programmed the behavior of the people you meet in those games, since they're actually human. (Btw, I don't think many MMORPG games have weight of the equipment either... as you said, it's a gameplay thing.)
  18. There was simply too much of the word "technically" for me to comprehend what you were saying there. I still claim that The Dungeon is the most advanced CRPG out there, even today (and oddly enough, nobody on any forum have ever disputed it, at least not after hearing about its features, and that is regardless of what their favourite game was). Oblivion might, just might, have a chance of being more advanced than The Dungeon, but looking at the track record of Morrowind, I doubt it (it's huge, but not very advanced).
  19. I don't disagree with the last sentence, but I do with the others. Unless you are talking about the 16-bit version of The City, you should know that the 8-bit version doesn't have any weight of equipment, doesn't have the ability to join guilds and you also can't ever raise your alignment in any way (which is a separate debate, but still). Also, Omar is an at least as complex character as the Smithy, the (three) Healers are just as interesting as the doctors in the City, and the Chapel is way more intricate than the Banks (which have their vaults in The Dungeon anyway, in addition to the guild lockers). The Dungeon has the same skill based system as The City, same incubation times with diseases, but also even more different curses (and ways to remove them). Finally, the combat is also way more complex in The Dungeon, with multiple foes, many more choices of interaction (bribery, offers, etc.), the ability to knock opponents from the ground, loose or break your weapon and you only get half the points per damage in experience compared to the whole thing in The City (though granted, The Dungeon has many more, less dangerous foes). You could argue that The City has wind and rain, but come on, The Dungeon is underground and it does get cold in the Crystal Cavern and hot in the lair of the Wyrm. I also haven't said anything about the Dwarven Smithy, Enchantress and Lucky, the fact that Thieves are the only ones in The Dungeon who rob you (compared to EVERYONE in The City) and the fact that Knights yield to you if you are strong enough... ok, I guess I said it now. "Finally" is probably the wrong word, but this is all I could think of right now... As I already said, sure The Dungeon is easier because there's a safe starting area with a free resting place and you can get one of the best weapons in the game as a level 1 character, but technically, it does surpass The City in basically all areas.
  20. I missed this reply before, but I feel compelled to answer... ...see, ever since The Dungeon was released, I've always considered it the superior game (and technically, I believe it is). The Dungeon has more places to visit, more stuff to do... and recently, I've discovered that that is the problem with the game. Every time you replay it, you know what to do. How fun is it that a level 1 character can hop out into the sewers and hike down to get the Razor Ice immediately, simply because you know it is there? The City it different, since it's totally open ended, there is always a fresh challenge with a fresh start. I still believe that The Dungeon is the better game for the newcomer and casual gamer, but for the true fan, you come back for The City.
  21. Great text, thank you! Would you mind if I posted this to my website: http://www.eobet.com/alternate-reality/ (It will probably not be posted before next year, because I plan on making a complete overhaul of the site.) PM me if you wish to be credited with another name than the nick you use here!
  22. Please, the cover with 15 votes cannot win! If you do a Google search for it, you will find the following: If you will have a bit of patience, I will recreate the original The City poster and Alternate Reality logo with a vector based application, as I plan to use it for the redesign of my new website. I can then resize it properly to your format, and you are welcome to use it. The timeline for this is around new years, though...
  23. If you ever get it in a readable text format for the PC, please let me know. I would be interested in it as I plan to make an overhaul of my site soon, with interviews from all of the developers, musician and graphic artists... Wow, I lost touch with Jim Norris a few years back. I wonder if he is still on the mailing list, though? Then again, I think a few people on the list asked about that program, so I guess not.
